Why my journey was successful?• GATE Program started the chain of events that
funneled me into more “Pipeline” programs
• Mentorship relationships led to knowledge and recommendation for future “Pipeline” programs
• Attended a college preparatory high school and learned the college admission requirements and steps of the application process
• Learned to seek out “Pipeline programs”
Why Pipeline Programs?• Despite growth in minority populations the
practicing bar remains 90% White• We are the second least diverse profession• We cannot bring diverse students into law school if
they “leak” out of the educational pipeline well before our gates

Why Pipeline Programs• Evidence demonstrates that collaborative efforts along the
pipeline can narrow the achievement gap.
• Evidence shows that rigorous and engaging programs with high expectations and a college culture can keep students in school and offer them opportunities to aspire and achieve.
• Law’s pedagogy and community offer these.

What We Have Learned…
• We are teaching students to reason and think critically.
• We are creating an educationally rigorous environment with high expectations.
• Students are attending school, persisting, engaging and going on to college.
• Students are visualizing a future as an attorney.
What We Have Learned…• Legal content is
relevant and engaging, and helps students visualize a future beyond sports and entertainment.
• A systematic structure is needed for consistent re-enforcement; “splash and dash” programs do not work.
What We Have Learned…It takes a Village
Partnerships help sustain the program and provide consistency and innovation.
