Challenges in Education Cost: some families cannot afford
school uniforms, pens, notebooks and text books
Distance: some children live too far from their nearest school.
Capacity: there are not enough schools for everyone to attend.
Health: sickness and disease keeps children from going to school.

Link Ethiopia - Vision Link Ethiopia’s vision is an equal and just world
in which poverty and social injustice are eradicated and basic human rights and a decent quality of life are assured. In our interconnected global society, we are all responsible for our actions and our common wellbeing.
We believe education is a vital tool to promote understanding and give disadvantaged children the tools to achieve their full potential as tomorrow’s global citizens.

Link Ethiopia - Mission Providing access to quality education for
children aged 7-18 in Ethiopia, with the broader aim of empowering people to lift themselves and their communities out of poverty.
Fostering positive communication and interaction between people of different cultures in order to raise awareness of similarities, shared goals and our global interdependence.

set up, support and help manage links between U.K. schools and schools in Ethiopia, in both the primary and secondary sectors
Gap Scheme offer three-month Gap Ethiopia teaching placements to pre-
university students. Our volunteers are accommodated by local families and teach English Communication Skills at secondary school level.
Resourcing Projects schools we work with in Ethiopia are severely under-resourced. We
therefore aim to assist schools in identifying, implementing and managing projects to improve the quality of the schooling they offer. This may involve basic necessities such as clean running water, adequate classrooms, the training of teachers in computer skills, or the management of libraries in larger schools.

Tokumma - Geography and Economy West Shoa zone of Oromia Regional State in
Ethiopia. The school’s catchment area is about 35 km2
(City of Bern 51.6 km2) with a population of about 3,000.
The source of income in the area is largely traditional farming and animal rearing. The area does not have proper modern infrastructure including road, electricity, potable water and health facility.

Tokumma Elementary School – new library 2012, the Tokumma school enjoyed the
benefits of a joint British & Foreign School Society (BFSS) project which helped expand the school to accommodate over 150 extra pupils in three new classrooms.
It also constructed a new library – a hugely important source of information and education for the children and local community – which can serve up to 40 pupils at a time!

15
Tokumma Elementary School - Solar Power As well as this brilliant expansion in the
school’s capacity, this BFSS-funded project, coordinated with Link Ethiopia, also funded the installation of a solar-powered electricity system, which provides clean, sustainable energy to classrooms.
This has allowed the school – in a village with no electricity connection – to provide lighting to classrooms and to power radios!

16
Tokumma Elementary School - Solar powered IT Centre Link Ethiopia’s new project at the
school, once again in cooperation with the BFSS and with generous help from our Swiss donor Christian Sailer and the Gymnasium Kirchenfeld, will create a solar-powered IT centre at the school, and one which will be connected to the internet!
This will be a huge improvement in the educational opportunities that Tokumma school can provide to their pupils.

Background Education in Tokumma The main reason why education has marginal impact (if
any) on development in rural Ethiopia is because of absence of linkage between education and community needs. School curriculum in Ethiopia is focused on development of
academic and reading skills.
However, there are neither books nor newspapers in a typical village. There is no life skill training targeted to improving productivity of agricultural labour and land, personal hygiene or the environment. Tokumma reflects the situation in a typical rural village in
Ethiopia: There is virtually no non-farm employment.
