The British System:

Schools that follow the British education system often use an amended form of the NationalCurriculum for England and Wales which is modified to suit particular school circumstances.

Schools are normally organised into number of developmental ‘Key Stages’ from theFoundation Year that covers pre-kindergarten, Reception for children 2+ to 5+ years, throughfrom Key Stage 1, for 5 to 7 year olds, to Key Stage 4, for 14 to 16+ year olds. There is also aSenior Students for 17 to 18+ year-old pupils.

The American System:

Unlike the British system that has a uniform curriculumthat is nationally set and approved the American educationsystem has no national standard but one that is set by theindividual states. There is however a consensus of what shouldbe included in the individual curricular; for example mostschools teach mathematics, language skills like reading, writing, grammar etc, science, and the social studies likehistory, geography, citizenship, economics and the like, information technology and physical education too is included.

Outside these mandatory core subjects are what are called‘electives’ that aim to benefit the pupil by meeting theirindividual needs and aims. Some of the most popular of the‘electives’ are the performing arts, foreign languages andadvanced study of maths, science or technology.

Standards are set by regional education boards andassociations in multi-state regions. These boards andassociations set the testing and examining standards and forthe assessment of personal work assignments and other learningoutcomes.

The boards and associations are held accountable foroverseeing the implementation of quality standards in theschools in their sphere of influence.

EducationThailand has a burgeoning international school system that

continues to expand year upon year. Indeed so rapid is the riseof international schools in the Kingdom that some now saythat Thailand has the most competitive and comprehensive inthe world.

Except for a very small number of international schoolsthat exist to provide education almost exclusively for particularforeign groups or nationals of a particular country, theinternational schools in Thailand have a multi-national pupilintake and provide an educational experience based on one orother the American or British systems or the InternationalBaccalaureate. Whichever system is used the language ofinstruction is always English.

Page 12: Education

308

The English National Curriculum is both broad and balanced and taught across the fourpost-kindergarten Key Stages, with English, Mathematics, Science and Information Technologybeing regarded as core subjects. The Humanities, Creative and Performing Arts, ModernLanguages and Physical Education are also provided as foundation subjects.

On completion of Key Stage 4, most students sit the General Certificate of SecondaryEducation (GCSE) examination or the equivalent international exams (IGCSE) in the core anda selection of other curriculum subjects. These examinations are regarded as good preparationfor the pre-university qualification courses offered by British international schools: theInternational Baccalaureate (IB) or the Advanced (A) level, in Years 12 and 13.

Although organizational details may differ, the characteristics of British schools in aninternational context include emphasis on academic rigour, the provision of effective pastoralcare for all students and the commitment to comprehensive and stimulating sports, performingarts, extra-curricular activities, and day and residential visit programmes.

International Baccalaureate (IB):

The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) offersthree coordinated programmes of study for children 3-19 yearsof age. All three programmes have a similar pedagogical baseand are learning centered and inquiry based, with the aim ofdeveloping well-rounded, reflective, and compassionate youngadults. In addition to providing a rigorous academicprogramme of high standards, the IBO approach places a strongemphasis on the ideals of international understanding andresponsible global citizenship.

Primary Years Programme:

The Primary Years Programme (ages 3-12) offers acomprehensive inquiry-based approach to learning that focuseson the total growth of the developing child and addresses theacademic, social, physical, emotional and cultural needs ofyounger learners. PYP sets high standards and expectationsfor student learning, incorporating five essential elements:concepts, skills, attitudes, actions and knowledge. Thisrigorous transdisciplinary programme broadens minds andimparts an international perspective.

Middle Years Programme:

The Middle Years Programme (ages 11-16) is a five-yearprogramme that naturally follows the PYP and serves as anexcellent preparation for the IB Diploma Programme. Theframework provides discipline, challenging standards, skills, creativity and flexibility that aid a student’s individual growthtowards self-reliance and responsible participation in society.Embedded within the MYP are five core areas of interactionand these provides a common perspectives as well as

Page 13: Education

309

connections among the eight required academic subjects. TheMYP model accentuates the interrelatedness and holistic natureof knowledge while recognizing the independence and integrityof each discipline, all the while preparing students for futurestudy in various subjects.

International Baccalaureate (IB)Diploma Programme:

The IB Diploma Programme (ages 16-19) is one of the mostcomprehensive, challenging and intellectually stimulatingcourses of study offered in preparation for university entrance. The programme provides a balanced educational experiencewith a global perspective and is designed for committed, academically capable students. Students must select onesubject from each of the six subject groups: Language A,Language B, Individuals and Societies, Experimental Sciences,Mathematics, and the Arts and Electives, giving both breadthand depth to a student’s academic programme. The IB Diplomaalso has three further elements providing additional academicspecialization as well as recognition of interests outside theclassroom; these elements are Theory of Knowledge, theExtended Essay, and Creativity, Action, Service (CAS).

All of the above courses stress the importance of criticalthinking skills for their pupils.

Some schools may follow a national curriculum other thanthe US or the UK ones, a specific national curriculum can bean advantage when returning to a home country to continuesecondary education there or to start a higher education coursein the child’s home country.

Where are they?

Most of Thailand’s international schools are in the largecentres of population Bangkok obviously has the largestnumber but Chiang Mai in the north and Phuket in the southalso have a number of international schools mainly conductingthe American or British curriculum.

Among their number are some famous and illustrious nameslike Harrow International and Shrewsbury Internationalschools. Both of which are respected British private schoolswith enviable reputations that stretch back over many hundredsof years.

Besides the international school network Thailand also hasa very strong bi-lingual educational tradition that goes backmore than a century.

Bilingual schools offer the best of both educational world’sby providing an insight into Thai society and culture andlanguage and by providing a school specific curriculum of

Page 14: Education

310

adopting either the American, British, or IB systems andadapting it to the schools specific needs.

Many of the lessons in bi-lingual schools are taught in alanguage other than Thai such as English or French but theThai language is extensively used for many subjects likehistory, geography etc.

Both international and bi-lingual schools follow the holidayand examination schedules of the particular curriculum. Therefore American schools will follow the American scheduleof examinations and the British the British system etc.

Teachers:

The teaching staff in all the international and bi-lingualschools are qualified in education, all have degrees in theirsubject areas and all have to have a degree in education also. Many of the foreign teachers are recruited from their homecountries and usually have years of experience in their ownsystems. Every teacher has to be enrolled or licenced both inThailand and in the countries where they qualified and morestringent rules are being implemented t ensure that the qualityof the teacher and therefore the educational experience is ofthe highest standard possible.

Quality and Inspections:

Quality education is of great importance to all theinternational and bi-lingual schools and they are regularlyassessed and inspected by at least two different forms ofassessment tools firstly by the Thai Ministry of Education andthose schools that use a foreign curriculum, like the EnglishNational Curriculum or an American one will be frequentlyassessed and inspected by the examining organisations fromthe UK and the US, the International Baccalaureate. Theseassessments are as stringent as those conducted in their homecountries.

Many of these schools have excellent examination resultswith many of their pupils gaining entrance to overseas or Thaiuniversities. Indeed so good is the education in manyinternational schools that a number of their pupils have gainedentrance to some of the world’s most prestigious universitieslike Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge and Yale. With othersuccessful pupils going on to other universities in the UK, US,Australia, New Zealand, France and Germany the internationalschools record as centres of educational excellence is wellfounded.
