Membership & Education

Becoming a member of the Institution is a tough journey, but it has to be. Once elected to professional membership, our members are recognised worldwide as structural engineers working at the highest level of technical and professional expertise.

The Membership and Education Department is one of the key departments of the Institution and is responsible for:

- Enthusing and attracting people into the profession of Structural Engineering.

- Preparing our members for a career in structural engineering by providing guidance and information.

- Supporting our members to become professionally qualified.

- Developing and retaining members through the provision of training and Continued Professional Development (CPD).

Membership of the Institution is for anyone with an interest in structural engineering and we believe that it is important to encourage children to develop an interest in engineering from an early age. We engage with schools, colleges, universities and employers to promote structural engineering and aim to highlight the importance that a structural engineer plays in today’s society.

We manage the careers work of the Institution and in association with the Communications Department will produce careers materials including a suite of brochures, online resources and presentations, as well as attending relevant events to engage with stakeholders and potential members. We also manage the interface with other stakeholders in the careers environment to ensure best use of resources and consistency in message.

We deal with the accreditation of academic qualifications and assessment of qualifications from those academic establishments where qualifications are not recognised or accredited under an existing agreement.

We have supported the Education Committee, Joint Board of Moderators (JBM), Engineering Accreditation Board, Education for Engineering (E4E) and other organisations in reviewing curricula and encouraging best practice in the teaching of structural engineering and STEM subjects in general, and greater interaction between industry and academia. We have developed and funded resources to support academics in delivering creative, innovative forms of teaching and will continue to provide materials to assist in developing graduates who meet industry requirements. The Membership and Education Department is responsible for organising an Annual Academic Conference to discuss these, and other, matters.

We have approved recommendations from the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) pertaining to the accreditation of degree courses and programmes of Further Learning and contributed to discussions on curriculum content so as to ensure high standards of civil/structural engineering education.

We have further developed the Student Liaison Officer scheme and increased the number of free student members. We continue to develop student membership and aim to meet challenging recruitment targets.

It will be important that you establish a very good working relationship with the Education Committee from the outset and continue to work with its Chair and members to implement and deliver on initiatives clearly communicating progress.

The role of Education Manager was introduced two years ago and, whilst much has been achieved, there are still many opportunities to make a significant impact in this area.
