Introduction As part of the process for preparing for the annual IEP for each one
of the high school special education students on my caseload, I administer the Enderle-Severson Transition Rating Scale (ESTR-J). The ESTR-J is a measure of the development of transition skills in the areas of community participation, employment, home living, post-secondary education, and recreation and leisure. A student who demonstrates readiness in these areas would typically show scores of 80% or higher. I analyzed the results from the seventeen ESTR-J assessments administered during the 2011-2012 school year and found that only two out of seventeen (12%) of the students were able to demonstrate the skills necessary to perform successfully in a job interview (communicate information about themselves, answer job interview questions, and demonstrate appropriate job interview behaviors).
Analyze Phase Description
• Audience: special education student caseload.• The students need to learn how to fill out a
job application and answer job interview questions.
• Delivery option chosen was Weebly due to the number of videos and Google.docs.
• Main constraint is time away from classroom.
Design Phase Description
• WebQuest design will engage the student.• Complete job application first, then practice
interview skills is logical sequence.• Videos and text showing good interview
behaviors and typical questions appeals to broader range of learning styles.
• Considered including mock interview. Decided to make that a follow-up activity to be addressed at a future time (next annual IEP).
Develop Phase Description
• Video and text were prepared. Many hours spent deciding which videos to use.
• Provide continuity by using the same video producer to demonstrate tough interview questions.
• Had to keep that time constraint in mind!• Google.docs add hands-on aspect.
Implement Phase Description
• Webquest will be undertaken by each student on an individual basis as part of the preparation for the annual IEP.
• Results will be presented to student, parents, outside agencies (i.e. MRS) at the IEP meeting and will drive IEP goals and objectives development relating to transition.
• Navigating the WebQuest should be easy for most 9-12 grade students on my caseload from my past experience as co-teacher of 9th grade Computers Class. I will assist as needed.
Evaluate Phase Description
• The goal of this WebQuest is to help prepare students for getting a job and the transition to post secondary life.
• Each year at the annual IEP meeting, the team will evaluate progress towards IEP goals and objectives developed, in part, on the basis of how well the student was able to complete the WebQuest.
