Setting the Stage for Educational Technology Use in the Classroom
Why use Technology in the classroom?
• Promotes Meaningful Learning (Chapter 2, Grabe/Grabe)
• Allows use of Multiple Intelligences
• Required by California Standards for Teachers

Unit 1
Technology has changed our vocabulary: Remember when...
• A “window” was something you had to clean.• A “RAM” was a male sheep.• “Meg” was a girl’s first name.• An “application” was for employment.• A “program” was a TV show.• A “cursor” used profanity.• A “keyboard” was a piano.• “Web” was a spider’s home and…• “Memory” was something you lost with age.

Factors that Influence and Limit the Use of Multimedia Technology in the Classroom
The lack of adequate teacher training in technology is an obstacle to integrating multimedia technology applications into K-12 curricula
Reference: Beckwith, E., Dissertation, March 2001

Unit 1
Proposed Educational Technology Approach Overview
Change/enhance the current technology platform
• to deliver hypermedia/multimedia instruction to fully support student achievement and…
• to provide administrative support to staff and teachers.
EDT 608
Unit 1
Proposed technology approach for the classroom...
Use multimedia technology techniques to
Enhance the classroom teacher’s instructional tools with the capability to improve student comprehension and performance by displaying complex academic concepts visually and interactively.
EDT 608
Unit 1
We are building a grand theater with a hypermedia & multimedia
technology capability...
What is the play going to be?
(i.e. Curriculum)
EDT 608
Unit 1 Educators’ biggest challenge…
EDT 608
Unit 1
Moving the current “text” focused and overhead transparency based curriculum onto a hypermedia &
multimedia oriented and internet based platform.

Unit 1
Software Applications for the Classroom
• There are thousands of educational software programs for schools.
• One basic software program that is found on most school computers is Microsoft Office which is comprised of three applications:– Word Processing (MS Word)– Spreadsheet (MS Excel)– Presentation (MS Power Point)
• MS Office and each of its three applications will be discussed and used in this course.
• One other software program that will be used in the course is Inspiration Software Inc.’s Inspiration which is used as a brainstorming and planning tool.
EDT 608
Unit 1 Microsoft Office- MS Word
With this word processing software you can make :
• Back-to-school night flyers with pictures and graphics
• Award certificates with students names• Any number of professional looking printed
forms, brochures, and letters. • And of course, tests, assignment sheets, and
study guides, etc.
EDT 608
Unit 1 Microsoft Office- MS Excel
• With this spreadsheet software you can manage your student information including:– Grades– Contact information– Textbook information– Key assignment and test dates
• You can also:– Manage your classroom budget– Make and sort lists of books and references– Maintain an alphabetized phone book– Make complex calculations – Write computation formulas
EDT 608
Unit 1 Microsoft Office- Power Point
• With this presentation software you can:– Animate text in numerous ways such as flying onto the
screen.– Present color pictures, graphs, and charts that can be
made to appear as desired.– Include video clips with sound.– Utilize professional transition effects between slides.– Hyperlink to the Internet and return to your presentation
with ease.– And a variety of other presentation applications.

Unit 1
Inspiration • With this very innovative and versatile software, you can
do a variety of things. Use Inspiration across the curriculum for:– Brainstorming – Webbing – Diagramming – Planning – Critical thinking – Concept mapping – Organizing – Outlining
• Inspiration's integrated diagramming and outlining environments work together to help students comprehend concepts and information.
• Educators use Inspiration to customize instruction, achieve standards, assess student progress, and energize learning.

Unit 1
Proposed technology approach for the office...
Use technology as a tool to assist administrators in assessing, organizing, evaluating, and retrieving information essential to support the teachers and students in the classroom.
(Note: Microsoft Office can be used in the office as well as in the classroom.)

Unit 1 Issues for Schools
• Educational software must address State Standards, State Tests, and required curriculum subjects.
• Student performance objectives, as measured by paper and pencil tests, must be included in a technology oriented curriculum.
Paper and pencil test preparation should be integrated into computer student assessment programs.

School Districts’ Automated Attendance System
• Allows the classroom teacher to take roll on her/his computer.
• Provides access to complete data file for all students assigned.
• Teachers can only access data on their students.
EDT 608
Unit 1Closing Comments
• District-wide computer network should be utilized• Internet and E-Mail capabilities should be provided
to all teachers and staff• Notebooks for all Teachers and Data/Video
projectors in every classroom should be goals.• Multimedia capabilities for all classrooms and a 1-4
computer to students ratio should be objectives. • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software would be a
good start in using technology for both instruction and administration.
