Estamos de celebración ¡El Proyecto TAO cumple 10 años!. Y lo queremos compartir con todos vosotros.

En esta séptima edición de nuestro boletín podréis ver una pequeña muestra de la labor que hemos realizado durante la temporada 2016.

Este año se han presentado muchas novedades para nuestra enti-dad. Desde participar en un amplio abanico de acciones formativas hasta crear nuevos estatutos a beneficio del bienestar animal, pa-sando por la creación de grupos repetidores de participantes para tener contacto a largo plazo o la colaboración con otras entidades como AMACMEC.

Desde estas líneas quiero agradecer a las entidades y personas que han confiado en la acción social de Fundación Río Safari Elche, sin ellas no sería posible hacer crecer este sueño.

We are excited to announce the 10th year anniversary of the TAO Project! And we want to share it with all

of you.

In this seventh edition of our bulletin you will see a little sample of the work developed during the 2016 season.

This year our entity has experienced a good deal of news. From taking part in a wide spectrum of educatio-nal actions to creating new statutes aimed at benefiting the wellbeing of animals, creating groups of previous participants in order to keep in touch with them in the long-term, or collaborating with other entities such as AMACMEC.

In these lines I would like to thank all the entities and people that have trusted the social action of Río Safari Elche Foundation, since without them it would not be possible to make this dream come true.

Timón:Es el ejemplar de leones marinos de terapia más joven, tiene 3 añitos. Ha participado en alguna que otra sesión, pero está en pleno proceso de entrenamiento para que en un futuro no muy lejano sea un gran aliado terapéutico.

Being only 3 years old, he is the youngest sea lion at the therapy sessions. Although he has already taken part in a few sessions, he is still being trained to eventually become a great therapeutic friend.

Curro: Se trata del animal más veterano, pues lleva 10 años participando en las sesiones de terapia. Se caracteriza por su gran tamaño. ¡Pesa 250Kg y tiene 13 años!. Le encanta el contacto con los más pequeños.

After 10 years with us at the therapy sessions, he is our most veteran friend. He is also one of our biggest, since he weights 250 kg and is 13 years old! He is always willing to play, especia-lly with the kids.

Balú: Podemos ver que disfruta mucho cuando los entrenadores le piden acción. Tiene 8 años y es el ejemplar más rubio. Le gusta mucho saltar y hacer que los niños disfruten con él.

Whenever our trainers call him, he is always ready for some action. He is 8 years old and the one with lighter colour of them all. He loves jumping and making kids have a good time.

Nerón: Es nuestro principal compañero en las sesiones de terapia. A sus 9 años le en-canta jugar a coger el aro o hacer equi-librio con la pelota. Le gusta mucho que le aplaudan cuando hace algún ejercicio.

He is our main friend at the therapy ses-sions. Being 9 years old, he loves pla-ying with the ring or balancing a ball. At the end of his shows, he always looks forward to receiving the applause of his audience.

CONOCE A NUESTRO EQUIPO

Desde que da comienzo el proceso de selección y evaluación de los participantes, hasta la planificación y ejecución de la intervención

me enfrento a grandes retos personales y profesionales. Colectivos con los que nunca he trabajo, afectaciones complicadas…es entonces cuando sabes que tu trabajo debe ser centrado en el usuario y la fami-lia, empático, estudiado y de calidad, siempre velando por el bienestar humano-animal. Antes de comenzar las sesiones sé que voy a conocer a personas luchadoras, que merecen la admiración de muchos y que se ganan un pedacito de mi corazón en poco tiempo.

Poder contar lo que este proyecto me ha aportado a lo largo de mi trayectoria profesional en FRSE me resulta imposible porque ha sido tanto… tantas vivencias positivas y momentos imborrables en los que he visto a adultos y niños con capacidades distintas adquirir grandes beneficios y sobretodo lograr mirar al futuro con otra perspectiva, mo-tivados y entusiasmados por conseguir nuevas metas.

Me gustaría dar la enhorabuena a todos los compañeros que hacen posible que esta labor siga adelante y que consigamos aprender día a día del trabajo con estos animales tan maravillosos. A las familias agradecerles la confianza depositada en mi persona, guardo en mis retinas el brillo de vuestras sonrisas.

From the beginning of the selection process and participants’ eva-luation to the planning and the intervention’s performance, I face

huge personal and professional challenges. Groups that I have never worked with, emotional distress… At this point you know that your work must focus on the user and the family, and it must be empathetic, well prepared and of good quality, always looking for the human-animal well-being. Before the sessions start I know that I will meet brave peo-ple, who deserve our admiration and who will soon keep with them a piece of my heart.

To explain what this project has given me throughout my professio-nal career in FRSE (Río Safari Elche Foundation) is almost impossible… so many positive and unforgettable experiences in which I have seen adults and kids with different capacities achieving great benefits and above all, achieving a new perspective to embrace their future, being motivated and enthusiastic about fulfilling new goals.

I would like to congratulate all my colleagues, who make it possible for this adventure to continue and that we could always learn about the work with these incredible animals. I would like to thank the fami-lies for their confidence in me; I will always keep the sparkle of your smiles.

Es el primer año que he tenido la suerte de poder ver y formar par-te del trabajo que se lleva a cabo con el Proyecto TAO, y si bien

es cierto que todas y cada una de las terapias que se desarrollan con los diferentes grupos nos hacen vivir momentos únicos, los progra-mas de sesiones intensivas que se extienden durante dos semanas con un mismo grupo de niños, son los que nos permiten apreciar más de cerca la evolución que se produce con la terapia.

Sesiones desarrolladas dentro del agua en las que tanto los niños como las familias pasan un rato divertido y lleno de nuevas expe-riencias, con la colaboración del león marino.

This is the first year that I have had the chance to see and be part of the work being done in the TAO Project. Although every single

therapy developed with the different groups makes us live unique moments, the two-week intensive therapies with the same group of kids are the ones that enable us to appreciate the evolution produ-ced by the therapy even closer.

Water sessions where both kids and families have a good time full of new experiences with the collaboration of a sea lion.

Mi experiencia en el proyecto TAO ha sido muy gratificante, ayudán-dome a crecer, aprendiendo y superando nuevos desafíos día a día. Resulta muy enriquecedor que el trabajo que realizamos durante todo el año sirva para tanto y consiga hacer feliz a tantas personas.

Desde aquí, agradecer a todas las personas que he conocido, por cada lección que me han enseñado y mostrar mi admiración por la fortaleza, la unión, el amor y las ganas de comerse el mundo que cada familia nos muestra.

¿QUÉ ES EL PROYECTO TAO?¿En qué se diferencia de los baños terapéuticos?

El Proyecto TAO es la actividad es-trella de FRSE, se caracteriza por

ser terapias asistidas por otáridos (Leones marinos) dirigidas a colec-tivos con diversidad funcional que se desarrollan durante dos semanas intensivas para un mismo grupo de participantes, quienes asisten con sus familias. En esta actividad se realiza una evaluación minuciosa para extraer objetivos individualizados, y así traba-jarlos durante las sesiones.

Por otra parte ofrecemos baños tera-péuticos a entidades sociales, entida-des privadas e incluso centros educa-tivos donde se beneficiarán personas con diversidad social y/o en riesgo de exclusión social durante un día única-mente de un baño con nuestros leo-nes marinos. Es una actividad guiada también por la terapeuta ocupacional, pero con un fin menos rehabilitador,

siendo la mejoría de la autoestima y motivación uno de los objetivos gene-rales a tratar.

¿Cómo es la metodología de trabajo?Nuestras sesiones se ven diferencia-das por tres fases.

SOCIALIZACIÓN Donde trabajamos la identidad de grupo y habilidades sociales mediante juegos acuáticos con los participantes y sus familiares.

RELAJACIÓN Importante para tener un estado óp-timo de activación para adquirir gran-des beneficios en la siguiente etapa.

INTERACCIÓN Con el león marino, realizamos acti-vidades con nuestros animales como eje motivador, donde trabajamos los objetivos marcados individualmente.

¿Qué mejoras se encuentran tras esta terapia?El estado de ánimo y la motivación se ven altamente beneficiados, fo-mentando el sentimiento de valía y autoestima. Encontramos mejoras en los niveles de atención, capacidad de adaptación social, fomento de las ca-pacidades comunicativas, y mejoras en el ámbito motor, entre otras.

¿A quién va dirigida?Nuestras sesiones van dirigidas a una gran variedad de colectivos con diver-sidad funcional o en riesgo de exclu-sión social, sin ser la edad un hándicap. Hasta el momento hemos atendido a personas con trastorno del espectro autista, daño cerebral adquirido, es-clerosis múltiple, enfermos oncológi-cos, enfermedades raras, síndrome de Down, síndrome de Asperger, parálisis cerebral…

The TAO Project is the star of our foundation. Distinguished for be-

ing a Sea lion assisted therapy ad-dressed to people with functional diversity, it takes place during two intensive weeks for the same group of participants, who attend with their families. In this activity a tho-rough analysis is made in order to draw personalized objectives that will be worked on throughout the sessions.

Furthermore, we offer therapeutic baths to social and private entities and even to educational centers where people with social diversity and/or at risk of social exclusion will benefit from bathing with our sea lions for just one day. Guided by an occupational therapist, this activity has a more emotional ra-ther than a rehabilitative approach,

being the improvement of self-es-teem and motivation one of the main goals to be fulfilled.

What is our training methodology? Our sessions are divided into three stages.

SOCIALIZATIONWhere we focus on group identity and social skills through water ga-mes with the participants and their relatives.

RELAXATIONImportant to achieve an optimum activating condition and acquire the great benefits in the next stage.

INTERACTIONWith sea lions, we develop activities where our animals become a moti-vational factor to fulfill the goals of each participant.

What are the benefits after this therapy?Both the mood and motivation are highly benefited, fostering a strong feeling of worth and self-esteem. Among many others, improvements in attention, social adaptation, communication, and motor skills are found.

To whom is it addressed?Our sessions are addressed to a wide variety of people with func-tional diversity or at risk of social exclusion of all ages. Until now we have worked with people with autism spectrum disorder, multi-ple sclerosis, cancer, rare diseases, Down and Asperger syndrome…

What is the TAO Project? What makes it different from therapeutic baths?



Os presentamos los datos estadísticos obteni-dos en el Proyecto TAO 2016.

Fundación Río Safari Elche evalúa el estado de los participantes tanto de forma previa a la interven-ción como posterior al tratamiento. Esto cobra gran importancia en la investigación de un proyecto tan innovador como es el Proyecto TAO, para así tener datos certeros de los beneficios que aporta nuestra intervención a los niños que la reciben directamen-te y a los familiares indirectamente.En la siguiente gráfica podremos observar como el número de beneficiarios con los años van en au-mento, llegando en esta décima temporada a su-perar los 2.400 beneficiarios.Debido a que la hipótesis de partida que tiene el Proyecto TAO es “La terapia asistida con leo-nes marinos proporciona beneficios emocionales, cognitivos, motores y sociales contribuyendo a la disminución de los problemas de conducta y co-municación con el entorno en personas con diver-

sidad funcional y/o riesgo de exclusión social, así como aumentar el bienestar general de la persona” nos vemos en la obligación de evaluar las 4 áreas arriba descritas, para ello utilizamos una evalua-ción informal que se mide mediante una escala Likert con ponderación de 1 a 5, siendo 1 “nunca” y 5 “siempre”.

We present you the results obtai-ned in the 2016 TAO Project.

The Río Safari Foundation eva-luates the state of participants before and after the treatment in order to develop the innovati-ve TAO project, obtaining precise data about the benefits of our therapy for kids, who receive it di-rectly, and their families, who re-ceive it indirectly. In the following graph we can ob-serve an increase in the number of patients, reaching more than 2,400 in this last tenth season.

The TAO Project hypothesis holds that “Sea lion assisted thera-py provides emotional, cognitive,

Another measured aspect is the quality of sleep of participants. The results regarding this para-meter are very positive.

For the last three years, we have been evaluating the overload of the main caretaker before and after the intervention, since we always invite family members to join the therapy, improving the wellbeing within the family itself. To do so we use the Zarit test with 22 items.

Otro dato que se tiene en cuenta es la calidad del sueño en los participantes, los resultas respecto este parámetro son muy positivos.

Desde hace tres temporadas evaluamos el nivel de sobrecarga que presenta el cuidador principal

antes y después de la intervención, debido a que siempre hacemos partícipes a los familiares para así mejorar el bienestar del núcleo familiar. Para ello utilizamos el test de Zarit con 22 ítems.

PARTICIPANTS’ EXPERIENCE


COLABORACIÓNCON AMACMECAsociación de Mujeres Afectadas por Cáncer de Mama de Elche y Comarca

Este año hemos querido implicarnos de mane-ra especial con AMACMEC. Fue a principios de

2015 cuando entre ambas entidades comenzamos a tejer una red de colaboración. Esta temporada aparte de hacer partícipes a las usuarias de la Asociación de nuestros baños terapéuticos quisi-mos realizar una quincena solidaria en Río Safari Elche desarrollada en el mes de Octubre, debido a que es el mes de lucha contra el cáncer de mama, de la cual se donaron los 3.200€ recaudados para mejorar la calidad de vida de tantas mujeres que han sido afectadas por este tipo de cáncer.

“Aún recuerdo como si fuera ayer el momento en que María, la terapeuta ocupacional de Fundación Río Safari, me informó de la posibilidad de partici-par en las sesiones de terapia con leones marinos. Yo, que acababa prácticamente de aterrizar en la asociación, pensé que aquello se me escapaba un poco de mi margen de maniobra: ¡ni siquiera tenía muy claro si conocía al detalle cómo eran esos animales!”

Mi hipótesis inicial coincidía con la de la Funda-ción: podríamos pensar que esa experiencia iba a resultar gratificante para las mujeres afectadas por cáncer de mama y, quizá, incluso mejorar su percepción corporal tras las cirugías. Pero aquello superó nuestras expectativas…En estos dos años en los que hemos tenido oca-sión de participar, ha habido muchos momentos que grabo en mi “disco duro mental”. Mi profesión me deja muchas (y muy buenas) sensaciones. Pero a partir de esta experiencia le doy un valor aña-dido a las imágenes que se graban en mis retinas mientas trabajo.

Recuerdo también que cuando comencé a pre-guntar a las socias que quienes querían participar, estaban muy reacias. Yo apenas conocía a una do-cena y eso, generalmente, es una dificultad. Podía casi intuir por sus caras que no estaba bien de la cabeza al plantearles aquello: desnudarse delante de otras mujeres, lucir la ropa de baño en plena entrada al Río Safari y, para más inri, zambullirse en una piscina con unos animales cuyo nombre sonaba a fiera salvaje. Definitivamente, yo no es-taba en mis cabales.


Pero poco a poco algunas socias se fueron ani-mando, aún no atino a saber si por apiadarse de mí o porque realmente las había convencido. En cualquier caso, en cuestión de días tenía los grupos formados y (agradeciendo siempre la paciencia de María) los datos necesarios recogidos, entre ellos el nivel de satisfacción con su imagen corporal tras la enfermedad.

En cuanto el primer grupo acudió a su cita, todo dio un giro de 180º. Las mujeres empezaron a pregun-tarme si quedaban huecos libres: habían oído que aquello era mágico… Y, aunque pueda parecer exa-gerado, a mí también me lo pareció. La vida me dio la oportunidad de ser testigo de cómo aquellas pri-meras seis mujeres que entraban a la piscina sin sa-ber a qué se enfrentaban (alguna de ellas ni siquie-ra se había bañado en una piscina desde hacía años) se transformaban de forma casi visible ante mis ojos. Pude ver cómo sonreían bajo la luz de aquel sol de junio, olvidándose por un momento de si la prótesis de mama estaba bien colocada o de si los kilos ganados por los duros tratamientos estaban bien disimulados. Pude ver cómo conectaban con aquel animal en apariencia tan fiel como pacífico. Casi me atrevo a decir que pude ver cómo aquella experiencia se grababa lentamente en la piel de las mujeres, aportándoles un plus de energía para tra-bajar plenamente en ellas mismas, en su proceso de enfermedad y en su nueva etapa vital tras el cáncer.

Y eso, queridos lectores, es lo que se repitió en los cinco grupos posteriores del primer año. Y del se-gundo. Sobra decir que para el siguiente, no hubo tanta dificultad en reunir a las participantes. Una de las mejores cosas que tiene la asociación es que estas mujeres son expertas en transmitirse los be-neficios de algo en cuanto lo experimentan… Y, afor-tunadamente, todas las participantes han tenido a bien hacerme saber cuánto de agradecidas estaban con el baño. Para mí ha sido especialmente gratifi-cante conocer que alguna ha vuelto a ir a la playa a raíz de la experiencia. O ha vuelto a ponerse el bikini en vez del bañador. O se ha mirado en el espejo desnuda desde otra perspectiva.

Pero sin duda lo que más me gusta es notar cómo se han esforzado en agarrar con fuerza esa valentía nacida conforme entraban en la piscina para colo-car en su sitio el proceso de enfermedad y tratar de avanzar emocionalmente en su camino. Gracias de corazón a Andrea, a María, a Iván, a David y a todo el equipo de la Fundación Río Safari por hacerlo posible. Que estos diez años de terapia con leones marinos se conviertan en diez más…”simos evaluar el concepto de imagen corporal me-diante una escala no estandarizada realizada en conjunto con la Psicóloga de AMACMEC y la Tera-peuta Ocupacional de FRSE, los resultados fueron muy positivos.

When the first group joined the therapy, everything chan-ged overnight. Women started to ask me if there were sti-ll available places: they heard that it was magical… And, though it might sound exaggerated, I thought so too. Life enabled me to witness how those first six women that got into the swimming pool without knowing what they were going to face (some of them hadn’t even swum for years), got almost visibly transformed before me. I could see how they laughed under the June sunlight, forgetting whether their breast prosthesis was correctly adjusted or whether their overweight gained after those hard treatments was well disguised. I could see how they came into contact with an animal whose appearance was as reliable as the Pacific. I even dare to say that I could see how such experience got slowly recorded in their skins, providing them extra energy to fully work on themselves, on their disease process and on their new life after cancer.

And this, dear readers, is what the other five groups expe-rienced during the first year. And during the second, it is needless to say that forming new groups was not difficult at all. One of the best things of the association is that wo-men are experts in telling each other the benefits of wha-tever they try… And fortunately all participants told me how grateful they felt in the therapy. For me it has been especia-lly rewarding to know that even some of them have gone to the beach again after the sessions, have worn bikini instead of a swimsuit, or have looked at themselves in the mirror with another perspective.

And above all, what I really love to see is the effort of these women to fiercely take hold of such bravery born out of their experience in the pool in order to deal with the disea-se process and carry on emotionally in their path. I wish to warmly thank Andrea, María, Iván, David and all the staff of the Río Safari Foundation for making this possible. And I deeply wish these ten years of therapy with sea lions to become another decade”

This year we really wanted to closely work with AMAC-MEC. In early 2015 both entities started to weave a colla-

boration network. Apart from offering our therapeutic ba-ths to the association members, this season we celebrated a supportive fortnight in Río Safari Elche that took place in October, the breast cancer awareness month, and from which 3,200 euros were raised with the aim of improving the quality of life of all those women suffering from this cancer.

“As if it were only yesterday, I still remember the very mo-ment when María, the occupational therapist from Río Safari Foundation, informed me about the possibility of ta-king part in therapy sessions with sea lions. I, who had just joined the association, thought that such an activity was totally out my reach: I barely knew those animals!”

My initial hypothesis coincided with that of the Foundation: we thought that for women affected by breast cancer this was going to be a rewarding experience, and that it might even help to improve their body perception after surgery. However, this adventure exceeded our expectations…

In these last two years participating in the sessions, I keep many memories in my “mental hard drive.” My profession always gave me very good feelings, but from this experien-ce onwards, the images my eyes save while working have an added value.

I also remember the reluctant attitude of some members when I first asked them about taking part in the therapy. I hardly knew a dozen of them and that, generally, is a diffi-culty. From their faces I could almost sense that suggesting undressing in front of other women, wearing swimsuits at the very entrance of Río Safari, and even more, jumping into a pool with animals whose name sounded like a wild beast, was kind of a mad idea. Without a doubt, I was not in my right mind.

Either because of my convincing attitude or simply becau-se they felt compassionate for me, some members were slowly getting exciting about it. In any case, in just a few days I already had the teams formed and (always than-

En Río Safari Elche afrontamos nuestro camino con objetivos y retos agrupados bajo parámetros conser-

vacionistas. Antes de seguir construyendo, es necesario hacer un escueto alto y mirar hacia atrás para poder en-carar el futuro con una mejor perspectiva. Lo cierto es que podemos estar orgullosos de la senda que hemos construido. En 2016 aumentamos nuestra presencia en programas de conservación a nivel europeo, una labor conjunta entre numerosos parques de Europa y abso-lutamente necesaria para dar esperanza a especies que se van diluyendo por la injustificada mano del hombre en sus hábitats naturales.

En este punto, los parques zoológicos jugamos un papel cla-ve en la superviven-cia de determinados animales. Hace años que Río Safari Elche puso en marcha un plan de conservación que conllevó alinear-se con otros centros de España y Europa para trabajar de forma conjunta en la salva-guarda de la fauna. Cada vez es mayor el número de especies que entran en la lista roja, algunas de ellas muy familiares para la gente como puede ser la jirafa o el león. Tres jirafas de la subes-pecie de Angola, dos hipopótamos pigmeo, cuatro orangutanes de Borneo y tres mangabeys de cresta negra completan nuestro elenco de animales en peligro que pertenecen a dichos programas europeos.

Afrontamos los retos que nos plantea el panorama medioambiental de la tierra con mucha ilusión y ganas por poner nuestro trabajo al servicio de las organiza-ciones de conservación; a fin de ayudar a mejorar una situación que empieza a ser insostenible en algunos casos. En esta tarea es fundamental el papel de la so-ciedad. Cuando una persona visita un centro conserva-cionista como es Río Safari Elche, está colaborando di-rectamente en la supervivencia de especies en peligro. En ese sentido, consideramos la educación como pilar básico en esta misión. No hay motivos ajenos al ser hu-mano que expliquen esta situación de vulnerabilidad y por ello entendemos que es absolutamente necesario inculcar los valores medioambientales.

At Río Safari Elche we face our future aims and cha-llenges with a conservationist perspective. And the

truth is that we are really proud of what we have built. In 2016 we increased our presence in several conser-vationist programs at European level, a collective task developed by a number of European parks absolutely necessary to give hope to those species progressively endangered by the unjustified human action in their natural habitats.

At this point zoological parks play a fundamental role in the survival of certain species. A few years ago Río Safari Elche started a conservationist plan along with

other Spanish and Europeans centers to collectively fight for animal conservation. The rate of species included in the red list is higher and higher, and some of them are as familiar as giraffes or lions. Three Angolan giraffes, two pygmy hippopo-tamuses, four Bornean orangu-tans and three black-crested mangabeys, complete our list of endangered animals included in these European programs.

We willingly face environmental challenges collaborating with conservationist organizations in order to improve an unbeara-ble situation for many species. Society plays a key role in this process. When people visit con-servationist centers such as Río Safari Elche, they are directly collaborating with the survival of endangered species. In this

sense, we do consider education as a cornerstone in this mission. There is no reason for human beings to justify this situation of vulnerability and that is why we believe that teaching environmental values becomes a top priority.

Fundación Río Safari, de la que formo parte ahora desde la posición de la vicepresiden-cia. En mis recientes años de andadura por el camino en el que mi familia tanto esfuerzo ha invertido, he descubierto el entusiasmo de un proyecto relevante y valioso al que deseo con gran empeño y emoción ser de utilidad. Me afecta la fuerte convicción de que la la-bor de la Fundación Río Safari puede y ha de crecer en direcciones nuevas que también merecen nuestra dedicación, ahora, de hecho, más que nunca. Me refiero a proyectos de investigación y conservación en lugares que son hogar de especies animales amenazadas; hogares en creciente vulnerabilidad, hábitats en riesgo de desaparición.

De parte de Río Safari Elche he tenido la inmensa fortuna de visitar y ser testigo del trabajo que desarrolla la Giraffe Conserva-tion Foundation (Fundación por la conserva-ción de la jirafa) en su sede, establecida en Windhoek, Namibia. La Giraffe Conservation Foundation es la única organización dedica-da en exclusiva a la protección de las jirafas salvajes. Esta fundación opera desde 2009 y gracias a su dedicado equipo se ha realizado, entre otras cosas, el gran descubrimiento de que no existe una sola especie de jirafa, como se creía hasta hace sólo unos meses, sino que gracias a los estudios genéticos de las dife-rentes poblaciones que ocurren a lo largo y ancho del continente africano, se han podido reconocer cuatro especies distintas, con nue-ve subespecies en total.

La Lista Roja de la Unión Internacional por la Conservación de la Naturaleza (UICN), el más exhaustivo inventario a nivel global de especies vegetales y animales y su estado de conservación, clasifica actualmente a la jirafa como especie única bajo la categoría Vulne-rable. Desde los años 90 y hasta diciembre de 2016 su categoría, no obstante, había sido la de Preocupación Menor.

Durante mi participación en la expedición conducida por la Giraffe Conservation Foundation al desierto del noroeste de Namibia tuve la posibilidad de presenciar un trabajo extraordinario cuyo calado re-percute directamente en la protección de este fascinante animal. El objetivo de las expediciones es mantener un registro de cada población y sus integrantes. Por for-tuna, resulta relativamente sencillo inven-tariar a un grupo de jirafas porque cada individuo tiene su propio pelaje y nunca hay dos patrones de manchas idénticos. Esta organización lleva más de una déca-da estudiando diversas poblaciones, y ya poseen un “libro de identidades” con fotos de ambos perfiles de cientos de animales. Mientras nuestra expedición avanzaba por el desierto, cada animal que encontrába-mos a nuestro paso era observado y com-parado con los individuos del libro. A me-nudo dábamos con él entre las miles de fotografías; otras veces, no. No dar con un individuo en el libro era una buena noticia; significaba que habíamos encontrado a un animal nuevo, un animal que no había sido registrado antes, y la población crecía por uno más. En diez días y atravesando una extensión de más de 600 km, dimos con 260 jirafas, 20 de ellas nuevas.

Estas y otras expediciones son repetidas por los miembros de la Giraffe Conserva-tion Foundation cada mes, para mantener una estrecha vigilancia sobre en qué esta-do se encuentran las poblaciones salva-jes de jirafas, sobre si sus números crecen o decrecen y en qué momento lo hacen. Desde Fundación Río Safari hemos creado un Plan de Acción ampliado para este año 2017 que incluirá la organización de días de concienciación en nuestras instalacio-nes, para difundir la palabra sobre proyec-tos como los de la Giraffe Conservation Foundation y recaudar fondos destinados a los mismos. Sin descuidar la gran labor social de nuestra fundación, podemos y esperamos involucrarnos en la defensa de otros proyectos, cuyo fin, la conservación de especies en el mundo, compartimos.

Todo esto significa que gracias al trabajo llevado a cabo y a la presión ejercida por grupos de investi-gación como la Giraffe Conservation Foundation, se deja constancia de una realidad a menudo ajena y desconocida. La jirafa, en efecto, es un animal icó-nico y un emblema de la naturaleza allá donde los haya, y sin embargo sabemos muy poco sobre ella. Desconocemos cómo su corazón de 10kg es capaz de transportar la sangre hasta el cerebro dos metros en contra de la gravedad, si existe la comunicación entre individuos, o qué amenazas afronta la super-vivencia de la especie. La jirafa es, de hecho, uno de los grandes mamíferos menos estudiados.

I have the great honor to announce for the first time the bulletin of our Río Safari Foundation, of which I am now

the vice president. During these last years of experience and family efforts, I have found enthusiasm born out of a relevant and precious project, which I strongly wish to perform with great endeavor and passion to be useful. I am fully convinced of the fact that the labor of Río Safari Foundation is able to grow in new directions that also deserve our dedication more than ever, in projects such as research and conservation in places that are the home of endangered species; homes with increasing vulnerability; habitats at risk of extinction.

On behalf of Río Safari Elche, I have had the great for-tune of visiting and witnessing the work developed by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation in its own central office in Windhoek, Namibia. The Giraffe Conservation Foundation is the only organization exclusively dedica-ted to the protection of wild giraffes. In this Foundation, operating since 2009 and thanks to its devoted team, it has been found that, among other things, due to the different genetic studies made across the length and breath of the African continent, there is not a single gi-raffe species, as it was until recently believed, but rather four distinct species along with nine subspecies in total.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species (IUCN), the most exhaustive inventory of plant and animal species and their conser-vation status worldwide, currently classifies the giraffe as the only species under the vulnerable group. Howe-ver, from the 1990s and until December 2016 its status had been that of least concern.

All of this means that thanks to the good dedication and the pressure exerted by some research groups such as the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, it is possible to state a reality usually alien and unknown. The giraffe is effectively an iconic and emblematic wild animal and, nevertheless, we have little knowledge about it. We ig-nore how its 10kg heart is able to carry blood up to the brain two meters against gravity, if there is a commu-nication between different giraffes, or which menaces confronts the survival of the species. The giraffe is, in-deed, one of the biggest, least studied mammals.

During my participation in the expedition led by the Gi-raffe Conservation Foundation in the northwest desert of Namibia I had the chance of witnessing an incredible work whose impact directly affects the protection of this

fascinating animal. The aim of these expeditions is to maintain a record of each population and its members. Luckily, it is relatively easy to record a group of giraffes since each one has its own fur and there are never two identical fur patterns. For more than a decade, this or-ganization has been studying different populations and they already have a “book of identities” with photographs of both profiles of hundreds of animals. As our expedi-tion moved forward through the desert, each animal that we encountered was observed and compared with the ones included in the book. We often found a coincidence among thousands of pictures, and sometimes we didn’t. Not finding a precedent in the book was good news, sin-ce it meant that we found a new animal, an animal that had not been recorded before, and thus the population increased by one more animal. In ten days and crossing an extension of more than 600 km, we found 260 gira-ffes, 20 of which were new.

These and other expeditions are repeated every month by the staff of the Giraffe Conservation Foundation in order to closely monitor the state of wild giraffe popula-tions, their increase or decrease in number and when this happens. From Río Safari Foundation we have created an extended action plan for this year that will include the organization of awareness days in our facilities with the aim of spreading information of projects, such as the ones carried by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, and of raising funds intended for them. Without forgetting the great social work of our foundation, we do hope to get involved in the defense of other projects, whose pur-pose, the conservation of species worldwide, we share.
