EditorialEsau. The name brings to

mind an image of Isaac'sfavorite son, a big, strapping out-doorsman-a likeable, easygoingsort of fellow, who wasn't one totake himself or life in general tooseriously. Not paying much atten-

tion to the past or showing muchconcern for the future, Esaucould well have invented thephrase "Live for today" as a phi-losophy of life. Evidently, it wasthe very attitude which causedhim to disdain his heritage andexchange his birthright for themomentary, transitory satisfac-tion of a bowl of stew.

In the brief time it took to sayyes to Jacob's bargain, Esau dis-carded the rich inheritance ofAbraham and Isaac, totally dis-regarding its significance not on-ly to his past but to his presentand future as well. No wonder hisactions that day set into motion achain of events which wouldcause him to be cursed instead ofblessed by his own father! Nowonder God says of him: "Esau Ihave hated, and I have turned hismountains into wasteland and lefthis inheritance to the desertjackals" (Mal. 1:3 NIV). Esau wasa man who cut himself off fromhis heritage, and it cost him dear-ly. He realized, all too late, thatheritage is a life-and-death mat-ter.

Unfortunately, Esau would havefelt at home in most of modemsociety, for the life-style he ex-emplified is rampant today. Infact, the influence of that life-style has extended even into theChurch, so that many of us at timesborder upon becoming Esaus our-selves.Too often we tend to disdainthe inheritance we ought to re-ceive and cherish from those whohave gone before us. By cuttingour moorings to the past, we, likeEsau, endanger our future andthe blessing that God desires toplace on us.

However, if instead we canopen our eyes to the vast treasurethat is our heritage, we will learnto value it and to invest it in ourown lives and in the lives of ourchildren. The precious inheritanceof faith and grace that belonged to

Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to Mo-ses and Elijah, to Paul and Tim-othy, is ours as well. But we mustactivelysearch out that inheritanceand apprehend it

In this issue of New Wine welook at heritage from a number ofperspectives. Don Basham remi-nisces in his article about the god-ly men who were instrumental inencouraging him to seek God'shighest for his life. For anyonewho has been influenced by Don'slife and ministry, reading his arti-cle is like meeting spiritualgrandparents. Other perspectiveson heritage-John Duke's defini-tive article, Jerry Noah's biblicalexamination of the significance ofJacob's blessing, Charles Swin-doll's humorous and candid shar-ing, Diane Doyle's testimony, andRobin Conner's short story-combine to provide a convincingportrayal of the importance ofheritage in our lives. Finally, DonBasham aptly sums up in "To thePoint" the response God wantsfrom us: We need to find our her-itage, embrace it, enrich it andtransmit it to future generations.

Perhaps Jeremiah's words tothe people of Judah (Jer. 6:16)best capture the heart of the mat-ter. We need to stand with theprophet-looking back over thegenerations before us, and for-ward to the generations to come-and hear what God has saidabout apprehending our inheri-tance:

"Stand at the crossroads andlook;

ask for the ancient paths,ask where the good way is,

and walk in it,and you will find rest for

your souls." ...

For the past fifteen yearssome of us have been trav-

eling the world over, preachingand teaching the principles of thekingdom of God. We have em-phasized not only what it meansto enter into a covenant relation-ship with Jesus Christ but alsowhat it means to be covenantallyrelated to each other.

Our teaching has taken rootand produced spiritual offspring,with the development of eight orten spiritual generations amongthose churches and fellowshipsfor whom we hold pastoral re-sponsibility. In these churches wehave seen the results of obeyingPaul's advice to Timothy:

And the things you have heardme say in the presence ofmany witnesses, entrust to re-liable men who will also bequalified to teach others (2Tim. 2:2 NIV).

That one verse identifies fourspiritual generations. Truth andlife pass from Paul to Timothy, tothose taught by Timothy, on toothers who learned from thoseTimothy taught. When truth ispersonally communicated fromteacher to disciple, from crafts-man to apprentice, from parent tochild, more than facts or methodsare passed on; life is imparted.Not only history, but heritage iscreated.

Recently I have come to real-

ize that a large part of the spiri-tual heritage which I desire to passon to those for whom I feel ac-countable-whether through fam-ily, personal ministry or booksand tapes-stems from the lifeand inspiration I received yearsago from certain faithful menwhom God used on my behalf. Atpivotal times those men depos-ited life and truth in me whichtook root and helped shape mycharacter as I sought God's will formy own life.

I want to pay tribute here tofour of those men, sharing brieflywhat I received from .them. I doso with a grateful awareness ofhow deeply I am in their debt.

My FatherTo grow up in a happy and

serene home is a rare privilege,and I was blessed to be reared insuch a home. I prospered underthe love and care of a father andmother whose first priority wasthe welfare of their three sons.Whatever success I have achievedin my own marriage and with myown children is due in no smallpart to the parenting I received.

Almost all of my memories ofchildhood are pleasant ones, andall my recollections of my fatherare filled with respect and ad-miration. Though not outwardlyreligious,mydad manifested Christ-like qualities of faithfulness,

gentleness and loyalty. He was aloving, decent, hardworking manwho respected the Lord and whowas committed to his wife andchildren.

An ardent and skilled sports-man, my father could catch fishwhere no one else could catchthem, and scare up game where noone else could find it He passedon his love for hunting andfishing to his three sons, and mymemories are filled with beautifulscenes of sunrises and sunsetsduring fishing and hunting excur-sions on the prairies, on the lakesand rivers of North Texas, and inthe mountains of Colorado. I canalso vividly recall how he praisedme when I caught my first fish atthe age of five, and killed my firstdeer at the age of fifteen. His ap-proval drove shafts of securityand stability into my characterthat nothing can ever undermineor destroy. Such praise and ap-proval are more essential thanmost parents realize-even Jesusneeded to hear His Father say,"This is My beloved Son, inwhom I am well pleased."

My father's unwavering senseof loyalty and responsibility wasevident in his profession. He wasa "pipeliner" all his life, workingfifty-one years with the same firm,The Texas Pipeline Company, adivision of Texaco. Dad started atage fourteen as a water boy on apipeline crew, and eventuallyrose to district superintendentwith more than ninety men underhis oversight, men who loved himdeeply and respected him highly.

My father's integrity and loyal-ty were perhaps most clearly re-vealed in a crisis in his workwhich occurred when I was twelve.His immediate supervisor wasdischarged for a serious breachof business ethics. Though my fa-ther was in no way involved,nevertheless he was punished bya demotion and a cut in pay. Hebore the injustice unflinchingly,his only concern that his wife andthree sons think no less of him

because of his demotion. So faras we were concerned, however,he stood ten feet taller than thosewho misjudged him. Years laterthe president of the companypersonally apologized to him forthe miscarriage of justice.

What a magnificent gift tohave had a father whose faithful-ness left me an unblemished leg-acy and heritage. Thank you,God, for my father.

Dr. Frank LaubachAlthough my wife, Alice, and I

had previously read some of Dr.Frank Laubach's books on prayer,we first met him in 1951 whilestudents at the Koinonia Foun-dation in Baltimore, Maryland.Koinonia was a religious trainingcenter preparing technical mis-sionaries for overseas service-akind of spiritual Peace Corps.

Dr. Laubach was Koinonia'sfirst president. I still can recallsitting in a worship service in thelarge living room of Koinonia'smanor house listening as heprayed, his graying head tiltedback, and his deep voice filledwith a majestic dignity and con-fidence. His face, lifted towardheaven, seemed to light up withthe glory of God. He was one of

the most Christlike men I haveever met.

Dr. Laubach was perhaps bestknown for his outstanding achieve-ments as a world missionary andliteracy expert, with his literacymethod used worldwide over thepast forty years to teach over 150million illiterates to read. But formany Christians, myself included,Frank Laubach is best remem-bered as a man of deep faith andtremendous power in prayer. Themany devotional books hewrote-books like Prayer, theMightiest Force in the World;You Are My Friend; Letters by aModem Mystic; and The GameWith Minutes-reflected hisbelief in the miracle-workingpower of prayer and the availabilityof moment-by-moment, life-trans-forming communion with God.

in the Philippine Islands in 1930and 1931. In this book Dr. Lau-bach described his own baptismin the Holy Spirit in which Godbegan to speak directly to him,only in English instead of un-known tongues. He testified thathis unique method of literacyteaching came as a divine revela.tion during a similar high mo-ment of prayer.

In 1955, while I was enrolledin the Disciples of Christ Sem-inary at Phillips University inEnid, Oklahoma, Dr. Laubachcame to speak at seminary chap-el. At the time I lived in almostconstant frustration over theskepticism of most of the profes-sors and many of the studentsconcerning prayer and present-day miracles. Consequently, Icould scarcely contain my elationas Dr. Laubach shared in chapelhis unshakable conviction con-cerning the power of prayer. De-scribing the prophetic, two-wayconversation with God that was atthe heart of his own devotional life,he said to a stunned audience:"You are free to decide whetherI'm right when I tell you Godspeaks to me. But I have listened .for over twenty years, and Hisdirection has never failed me."

I quoted Dr. Laubach in theintroduction of my first book,Face Up With A Miracle, andwhen it was published in 1967, Isent him a copy with a letterthanking him for the inspirationhis life and ministry had providedme. Some months later we met ata spiritual life conference in Okla-homa. Joining me at dinner oneevening, he took the opportunityto encourage me once more. Hewas almost eighty years of age,and I was just beginning my char-ismatic teaching ministry at theage of forty-one. After somewarm words of appreciation formy book, Dr. Laubach suddenlyreached across the table andtouched me on the forehead. Hesaid, "I must decrease and youmust increase." When I started

to protest he shook his head andsmiled. "I mean that my ministryis almost over, and that yours hasonly begun."

Perhaps it was only my imag-ination, but for weeks afterward itseemed I could still feel the touchof his fingers on my forehead.

Rufus MoseleyGod made only one Rufus

Moseley. He was a spiritual trou-badour, a joyous apostle bornahead of his time, crisscrossingthe country proclaiming Jesus asKing and declaring the presentreality of the kingdom of Goddecades before a great deal ofteaching emerged on this theme.That many failed to understandeither his joy or his triumphantmessage in no way diminished hisdelight in the Lord. He once con-fided to me: "I know God is usingme to reach the few who willreach the many."

Along with Frank Laubach,Rufus Moseley became a lasting

influence in my life. He was sev-enty-eight years old when I methim, and he died at age eighty-two. The time I spent in personwith him during those years to-taled only a few weeks, but mylife is immeasurably richer forhaving known him.

Rufus was so continually caughtup in worship and praise to Jesusthat whether in private conver-sation or public ministry he couldspeak no more than a few sen-tences without interjecting either"Hallelujah!" or "Praise the Lord!"He wrote two books, both chron-icles of his own personal spiritualquest: j'vlanifest Victory and Per-fect Everything. The title of thelatter Rufus drew from a super-natural experience in which theLord Jesus physically appeared tohim, revealing Himself as "PerfectEverything." With his usual ir-repressible humor, Rufus observedin the book's introduction that "ithas the best title of any book everwritten!"

His uninhibited joy in the HolySpirit was sometimes embarrassingto long-faced Christians. Onceafter hearing him speak, a resent-ful, dour-faced woman com-plained, "Brother Rufus, do youthink Jesus ever smiled?"

"Sister, I don't know aboutthat," Rufus beamed, "but Hesure fixed me so I can!"

Rufus was years ahead of mostChristians in his understandingof the importance of good nutri-tion. He felt that most Christianswere eating themselves to death,and often included advice aboutgood eating habits in his mes-sages. A portly lady concernedabout Old Testament food lawsonce asked, "Brother Rufus, canwe eat pork and still get toheaven?"

"Sure," Rufus replied, "andthe more you eat the quickeryou'll get there!"

Our last visit with Rufus tookplace while I was still a Bible stu-dent at Phillips University. Asmall charismatic prayer group

Each Christmas season we inevitably hear this question asked.Though it may seem overused, it's an important question,and one we too ought to ask ourselves year after year.

I recall the quiet sincerity withwhich he exhorted his class ofyoung seminarians to pray fortheir parishioners regularly. Inresponse to some theologicalskepticism engendered by his ex-hortation, he smiled and said: "Iknow you men have lots of ques-tions about the value of prayer,but let me state the truth as sim-ply as I can. Something goodhappens in the lives of your peo-ple when you pray for them thatdoesn't happen when you don't."

I wrote Dr. Osborn regularlyin my pastoral years followingseminary, occasionally givingvent to my frustration with thespiritual indifference of the Dis-ciples of Christ denomination ingeneral and my own church inparticular. I still remember howin October of 1962 I sat one dayin my study at Hillcrest ChristianChurch in Toronto, Canada,where I was pastor, chafing underthe conviction of the Holy Spiritto be bolder in my personal wit-ness. That morning I poured out

spiritual father to me. Dr. G. Ed-win Osborn was Head of the De-partment of Practical Theology atPhillips University'sGraduate Sem-inary. He was a gentle and sen-sitive man who was a recognizedauthority among the Disciples ofChrist in the fields of public wor-ship and devotional life. He be-came a guiding force in my lifeduring my seminary years. Morethan any other professor, Dr.Osborn understood and encour-aged myspiritualquest even thoughthe path I was moving along wasoutside the traditional beliefs ofour denomination.

He recognized potential in methat I had failed to see myself.During my second year in semi-nary I became his assistant, help-ing him grade sermon outlinessubmitted by students in his Ex-pository Preaching class. In ourtime together he encouraged me tohold firmlyto my faith, a task nonetoo easy in a seminary where in-tellectual skepticism often prevailedover scriptural truth.

college and seminary were filledwith frustration, there was onefaculty member who became a

meeting in our home had becomethe focal point of campus contro-versy. We were accused of hold-ing seances and orgies, and therewas talk of a petition to have meexpelled from college. A specialfaculty committee was formed toinvestigate the "pentecostalfanaticism" which had appearedon campus. Although I was even-tually exonerated of any wrongdo-ing, I was deeply hurt by theferocious attacks on both my char-acter and the prayer meetings.

During the controversy, Aliceand I visited Spirit-filled friendsin Oklahoma City looking for en-couragement and support. Therewe learned that Rufus Moseleywas in the hospital near death.We went to see him.

Although his frail body seemedalmost too weak to contain histriumphant spirit, he welcomedus with a broad smile. "I hearthere's been some real excite-ment at your Bible school," hesaid, then listened with deep con-cern as I confessed my fears anddismay over the controversy.

His evaluation of the situationwas brief and clear: "Don, if youdecide the cost of witnessing istoo great, or that the baptism inthe Holy Spirit is not meant forthis age, and you silence your wit-ness, your ministry in years aheadwill be robbed of most of itspower."

I am grateful that we resolvedthen and there to remain faithful towhat God had done for us.

Rufus's final words were a bene-diction I shall never forget. "Good-bye," he said. "In my prayers Ishall always see you receivingJesus' best and Jesus' highest."We ended the visit tearfully, forwe knew we would never see himagain. A few days later he slippedinto heaven.

my heart to Dr. Osborn once moreand received a response whichhelped change the course of mylife. Here is an excerpt from hisletter:

Dear Don,How I love you! For your

witness, your concern, yourprayers, your devotion. Per-haps I should also include, foryour agony of spirit as youcrave for others of us, and foryour brethren, the same rich-ness of spiritual experienceyou know. God will not let yourefforts go unattended-cling toyour hope and God will useyou.

I'm grateful for the warmingof my own experience and theenriching of my witness byyour faithfulness. I seek to givethe Spirit full sweep in my lifeand try to help my studentsunderstand that you cannotbind God in our human-mademolds. If we try, He breaks outin unexpected places.

Don, you chafe under the re-sistance of many of your lead-ers and that is human, but youare of the Spirit and patienceis one of the fruits of theSpirit.

Someday-soon or far dis-tant-a church will allow Godto break through and it will belike a light in a city on a hill. Ido not want you to silenceyour witness-demonstrate it;dedicate it to the use of God'sSpirit. He is in charge. Mean-while, keep writing and pleaseknow what a spiritual help youare to me in your church news-letters. You don't know howfar-reaching that work will be.Do you suppose Paul everdreamed of the earth-shakingresults of his letters? Andknow my love for you.

"Keep writing," he insisted.Inspired and encouraged by Dr.

Osborn's letters, I commencedwork on a book manuscript aboutour personal spiritual quest. I fre-quently sent chapters to him forhis comments and criticisms,which proved unfailingly helpfuland supportive. Without his en-couragement, Face Up With AMiracle would never have beenpublished. My only regret is thathe did not live to see it in print.He died in early 1967, just a fewmonths before the book ap-peared. But two of his letters tome are reproduced in thebook-now fifteen years old andstill in print-and I like to thinkthat, although he's gone, hisministry continues through thatbook and through all else I do.

A Rich HeritageThese, then, are some of the

men who helped shape my lifeand ministry, who provided mewith much of my personal spir-itual heritage. My own father laidthe foundation with his gentle-ness, his love and commitment tohis family, his loyalty to his com-pany, his love of sports and ap-preciation for the out-of-doors,all of which he faithfully impartedto his sons. Then Frank Laubach,Rufus Moseley and Dr. G. Edwin

Osborn, spiritual giants all,helped build on that foundation,taking special time and interestin a young, undisciplined Chris-tian who felt the call of God onhis life but had so little under-standing as to where, when andhow God's plan for him would befulfilled.

The life and truth and exam-ple these men provided sustainedme through the early years of mylife and ministry, helping meshape my convictions and choosethe particular path which wouldeventually lead me out of the pas-toral ministry into the writing andteaching ministry I have con-ducted for the past fifteen years.

Finally, I not only thank Godfor the rich heritage which ismine through the four men I havedescribed, but also that He con-tinues to provide for all our livesthose people of His choice who willshare in and add to our heritage.For me personally, those men havenames like Derek Prince, CharlesSimpson, Bob Mumford and ErnBaxter.

But to tell how we five cametogether and to describe the effectsour covenant has had on all ourlives and ministries-well, that'sanother story for another time....

John Donne's claim that "noman is an island" is a fact of

life clearly taught in the Bible.How we live inevitably influencesand is influenced by others. AsChristians we are, to use the apos-tle Paul's word, "debtors"-that is,under obligation-to those whohave influenced us. In order tounderstand our heritage I believewe must understand both our debtto those from the past who haveaffected our lives, and our obliga-tion to those in the future whoselives we will touch.

What do we mean by "heri-tage"? I would define it this way:the passing on from one genera-tion to another of characteristics,traditions and culture-in a word,life-style.

The life-stylewhich is the heri-tage of all Christians, and which wemust pass on, is that of God'scovenant people, a people whoare rightly related to God and Hispurposes, whose lives are char-acterized by righteousness, peaceand joy. The success or failure ofany particular generation cantherefore never be determined bysimply looking solely at that gen-eration. Generations, like in-dividuals, do not live in isolation,but are influenced and evaluatedby what comes before them andwhat comes after.

The writer of Hebrews speaksof the Christian life as a race thatis to be run "looking unto Jesus,the author and perfecter of ourfaith" (12:2). Obviously othershave run before us, and it is likelythat others will run after us. Forthat reason, I think we must seeourselves as a team in a relayrace rather than in a race whereeach man runs for himself.

A relay team is made up of sev-eral runners. One runner is re-sponsible for covering only partof the distance. As he finishes hiscourse, he passes the baton tothe next runner. This is repeateduntil the last runner crosses thefinish line waving the baton. Is

only the last man declared thewinner? No indeed! Every personwho is on the team shouts, "Wewon! We won!"

Each generation, like each run-ner, is handed a baton-its heri-tage. That generation's responsi-bility is to carry the heritage safelyand to pass it on successfully tothe next generation. I believethat this is the meaning of He-brews 11:39: "These [who haverun before us] were all com-mended for their faith, yet noneof them received what had beenpromised [the victor's crown].God had planned something bet-ter for us so that only together withus would they be made perfect[complete]" (NIV). The victorycould not be won by an earliergeneration alone; all the suc-

ceeding generations must be in-volved as well for the race to bewon.

We do not know if our genera-tion will be the last. We need tobe prepared as though it couldbe, but live as though it will not.If another generation after ourown should be the one to finishthe course, then we will take our .iplace with all of those who ran, ~and together we will share in theultimate victory of our Lord ....

Jacob's Blessingf _ •

Joseph lost his name so that his sons could receive theinheritance of his father.

When Jacob was preparingto die at the end of a

long, fruitful life, his son Josephbrought his own two sons to re-ceive their grandfather's blessing.This was not an act of kindnessto a dying old man; it was ratheran event of great historical sig-nificance, because as patriarch,Jacob was passing on his heri-tage. As the head of his family heset it in order and pronouncedblessings on his sons that woulddelineate who they were and whatcourse their destiny would take.

In Genesis chapter 48 we read:

Then Jacob said to Joseph,"God Almighty appeared to

me at Luz in the land of Ca-naan and blessed me, and Hesaid to me, 'Behold, I willmake you fruitful and numer-ous, and I will make you acompany of peoples, and willgive this land to your descen-dants after you for an ever-lasting possession. ' ... TheGod before whom my fathersAbraham and Isaac walked,the God who has been myShepherd all my life to this.day, the angel who has re-deemed me from all evil, blessthe lads, and may my namelive on in them, and the namesof my fathers Abraham andIsaac; and may they grow into

a multitude in the midst of theearth" (vv. 3-4, 15-16 NAS).

Jacob addressed a number ofimportant concerns as he lay dy-ing. He reminded his son andgrandsons of the faithfulness of

from and the course he must set for his family.

God. He pronounced blessingsand bestowed inheritance rights.We read in the next chapter ofGenesis that he also prophesiedabout the character and destinyof his descendants, and he gaveinstructions for his burial whichconfirmed that his people wouldone day return to Canaan.

Three GenerationsAll of Jacob's words were signif-

icant in the course of Israel'shistory, but of particular signif-icance in understanding the natureof heritage is Jacob's blessing onJoseph's sons. He took two ofthem-Ephraim and Manasseh-and declared them, not grand-sons, but his own sons: "Ephraimand Manasseh shall be mine, asReuben and Simeon are .... Maymy name live on in them, and thenames of my fathers, Abrahamand Isaac" (48:5,16).

In the meeting of these threegenerations-Jacob, Joseph andJoseph's sons-we have a glimpse

of the responsibilities of a fatherwith regard to heritage. First ofall, a father has a responsibility tohis forefathers to embody thefamily heritage, to represent themand their God. Their names liveon in him. Jacob realized that aman does not belong to himself;rather, he belongs to his fathers.

Second, a father must have asense of his place in history,knowing where he has come fromand the course he must set for hisfamily. His is the responsibility toprepare the next generation. Nordoes a father's responsibility endwith his children; it carries overas well to his grandchildren andtheir children.

The Contrast of King HezekiahJacob was a man who under-

stood the nature of heritage. Helooked back over his spiritualand natural inheritance, lookedout over the generation to come,and conducted himself in the pres-ent in a fashion that would inter-pret and build upon his heritage,passing it on to his children.

This kind of man is too often arare find in our society. Instead,King Hezekiah, an Old Testa-ment character from the book of2 Kings, is typical of many fatherstoday. When told by Isaiah that be-cause of his sin all the treasures hisfathers had laid up for him wouldbe carried off in later years toBabylon-along with some of hissons-this selfish king replied,"The word of the Lord which youhave spoken is good." He thought,"At least there will be peace andsecurity in my day (2 Ki.20:17-19). Hezekiah cared nei-

ther for the heritage prepared forhim, nor for what would happento his own sons, as long as hecould live out his life comfort-ably. But if he had understoodheritage, he would have preferredwar in his own day if it wouldmean peace for his sons.

In contrast to Hezekiah, Ja-cob's concern was for his descen-dants. He took the future of thenation of Israel in his hands andset its course forever. We can seefrom the scripture that Jacob'sson Joseph as well understoodthe unselfish attitude necessaryto build a heritage, for whenJacob took Ephraim and Manas-seh and made them his own, Jo-seph did not dispute Jacob's rightto claim his grandsons. AlthoughJacob's action was an honor forhis son, it certainly was not withoutcost to Joseph: he would not havehis descendants known by hisname as his brothers would. In-stead, they would be known asthe tribes of Ephraim andManasseh. There would be atribe of Judah, Levi, Benjaminand the others, but there wouldbe no tribe of Joseph.

Joseph's UnselfishnessIn this wayJoseph lost his name

so that his sons could receive theinheritance of his father. Yetbecause of his unselfishness thename Joseph probably brings tomind today more of the characterof God than the name of any ofhis brothers.

Like his forefathers Abraham,Isaac and Jacob, Joseph under-stood the role of a father: tostand in his appointed place andtime, carrying the accumulatedspiritual and natural heritage ofthose who have invested theirlives in him. Today we as wellneed to learn from Joseph the im-portance of preparing a new gen-eration so that in our children,and in our children's children,the names and the heritage ofAbraham, Isaac and Jacob mightlive on ....

time-I'm sure of that. Sorry,family, but I have to work."

. The place? Montgomery, Ala-bama.

The time? Several years ago.The situation? A dad who real-

ly loved his family and wantedthem to enjoy a summer vacation

had to work. The press of busi-ness kept him tied to the office.But being committed to theirhappiness, he assured them of hisdesire that they take the trip andenjoy the fleeting summer days.

He helped them plan every dayof the camping trip. They wouldload up the family station wagon,drive to California, camp up anddown the coast, then travel backhome together. Each day wascarefully arranged-even thehighways they would travel andthe places they would stop. Dadknew their whole route, the timethey .would reach each state-planned almost to the hour-evenwhen they would cross the GreatDivide.

It's what he didn't tell themthat made the difference.

The father took off work (he'dplanned it all along) and arrangedto have himself flown to an air-port near where his family wouldbe on that particular day of thetrip. He had also arranged tohave someone pick him up anddrive him to a place where everycar on that route had to pass.With a wide grin, he sat on hissleeping bag and waited for thearrival of that familiar stationwagon packed full of kids andcamping gear. When he spottedthe station wagon, he stood up,stepped out onto the shoulder ofthe road, and stuck out his thumb.

in life! The beautiful music of liv-ing is composed, practiced andperfected in the harmony ofhome. The freedom to laugh longand loudly ... the encouragementto participate in creativeactivities ... the spontaneity ofrelaxed relationships that plantmemories and deepen our rootsin the rich, rare soil of authentichappiness. Couldn't this be in-cluded in "all things" Paul men-tioned in Romans 8:32 and 1Timothy 6:17? The apostle tellsus that our God "richly suppliesus with all things to enjoy."

We're missing it-God'sbest-if the fun memories are be-ing eclipsed by the fierce ones.The world outside the family cir-cle is dark enough. When the lightgoes out within the circle ... howgreat is the darkness.

If life with mom and dad hasbecome more of an endurance

course than a refreshing catalyst.then your prime time project isn'ttoo tough to identify. Too manyof us are beginning to resemblestem-faced East German guardspatrolling the wall rather than ap-proachable, believable parents,building happy memories. Andmaybe even a few crazy ones,too. A "World Communion Ser-vice" on August 28, 1982,

sponsored by Kenneth CopelandMinistries, enabled Christians incities all around the world to simul-taneously share communion to-gether. Don Basham and DickLeggatt, representing New WineMagazine, traveled to Fort Worth,Texas, to participate in the service.The event was the culmination ofsix days of teaching at the 1982Southwest Believer's Conventionby Kenneth Copeland, T.L. Os-born, John Osteen, Jerry Savelle,Norvel Hayes and Charles Capps.Although the service itself tookplace in Fort Worth, it was broad-cast live via satellite to locationsthroughout the United States andaround the world. Approximately300,000 Christians gathered atover two hundred locations in

cities across America as well asIsrael, Canada, Australia, NewZealand, Mexico, China, the Phil-ippines, South Africa and SouthKorea, to view the broadcast ofthe Fort Worth meeting and thenbreak bread together.

The Spirit of God was unmis-takably present at the service.The meeting began with the en-thusiastic worship of more than15,000 participants, who filledthe Convention Center in FortWorth to capacity and beyond(when all the seats were taken,people were allowed to sit in theaisles and stand around the bal-cony rails). A tremendous senseof unity and expectancy was pres-ent, perhaps due to the realiza-tion that other believers acrossthe world were participating withthem at that moment. That sense

God's Call to UnityWhile Don Basham and Dick Leggatt were at

the Fort Worth meeting, Dick had an opportunity tointerview Doug Neece, Executive Director ofMinistries for Kenneth Copeland Ministries.

New Wine: How did the idea for the WorldCommunion Service come into being?Doug Neece: It wasn't an idea that came from justone man. The concept emerged corporately fromthe staff after our first television satellite event. Wesaw that closed-circuit television broadcasts utiliz-ing satellite capabilities could be effective in draw-ing people together in unity. For the last eighteenmonths, the need for unity in the Church has beena particular emphasis of Kenneth Copeland's as he

Next, Kenneth Copeland de-livered an excellent message on"The Blood Covenant" that bindsus together as Christians. Thenhe asked the conference speak-

ers, along wiili Pat Boone, whohad come to Fort Worth for theservice, to join him onstage tolead the audience in sharing com-munion.

A particulMly significant mo-ment came when Broilier T.L. Os-born and Kenneili Copeland minis-tered communion to one anoilier,and Kenneili verbalized in a per-sonal way ilie commitment andloyalty signified by the act ofsharing the New Covenant withbrothers and sisters in Christ.The presence of God was strong-ly evident as ilie entire congrega-tion in Fort Worth pMtook to-geilier of ilie bread and ilie cup,while across ilie world, viewers inoilier locations did the same. Re-ports from those other cities laterindicated iliat God was movingpowerfully in other locations

around the world as well as inFort Worth. As the service ended,ilie audience locked arms as theysang and worshiped the Lord to-gether.

In many respects ilie WorldCommunion Service was a signifi-cant event From a purely techno-logical standpoint, it was a remark-able achievement, utilizing domesticand international satellites totransmit a celebration of the NewCovenant in Jesus Christ to loca-tions in every part of the earth.But of far greater significance isthe fact that, from a spiritualperspective, it may well become alandmark occasion which will in-spire and encourage us in theyears to come as we move towardthe unity to which God is callingus....

As weexplored what God would have us do, looking forsomething that the entire body of Christ couldagree upon and gather around, it seemed that com-munion was the common ground we were seeking.Out of that came the World Communion Service.

NW: Could you share some thoughts on the im-portance and priority of unity?ON: Scripture says that Jesus will return for aChurch that is without spot or wrinkle. That meansa perfected Church-one that is moving together inlove in ilie same direction, not one iliat is beat down,disorganized and in diSMray. As we look fOrwMd toilie day when Jesus returns for His spotless Church,we want to do our part to bring it into fruition.

NW: What obstacles must Christians overcometo develop an openness to unity?ON: The biggest obstacle is a fear of walking inlove-a fear of offering our hand first or giving first,because we're afraid that others will take advantageof us. People are looking for a hand. They are look-ing for somebody they can trust who won't take ad-vantage of them. But the fear of vulnerability is thebiggest obstacle to overcome.

NW: What are some of the ways you haveresponded to this need for unity?ON: We are doing everything we possibly can to

help people all over the country to come together,especially through our local coordinators of thesatellite events, who are working with local pastorsof all denominations. It's having a unifying effectand people are overcoming their fear of oneanother.

During our convention here in Fort Worth, weset aside one day for a special ministers' conferencewhich brought together about eleven hundred pas-tors, evangelists and teachers for specific work-shops dealing with practical aspects of the ministry.It was just another way, on a very down-to-earthlevel, of unifying the body of Christ.

I believe it's essential that leaders come togetherin unity-the leadership has to be united before therest of the Body can be. I believe that there are peo-ple out there who have been ready for unity foryears, but they have been waiting for the evange-lists, the pastors and the teachers to come togetherand operate together.

We desire to have fellowship with other ministersand leaders. In our conventions, the participatingspeakers and ministers continually draw from oneanother, learning from one another and strengthen-ing one another. In this conference in particular,the conversations of the speakers when they havebeen together have basically centered on the unityof the Body. I believe that this is a direction God isleading the whole Church. We just want to do what-ever we can to feed the fire of this desire to be onein Him ....

One Sunday afternoon, mywife and I gathered our

three young sons together to sitin our family room. As was cus-tomary, I began to read a chapterof the Bible aloud to them. Wehad been attempting in thosefamily times to give the boys aglimpse of our heritage as God'speople, so as our chapter for thatparticular Sunday, I had chosenPsalm 78. This psalm recountsGod's miraculous dealings withgeneration after generation ofthe children of Israel, and Israel'svascillating response to Him.

While I was reading the ac-counts of God's miraculous in-tervention on Israel's behalf andeach generation's insistenceupon sinning against Him, I no-ticed that my oldest son, Chris-topher (who was eight years oldat the time), had a frustrated look

on his face. He was repeatedlyshaking his head as he read alongin his Bible. Finally, after aboutthe tenth time hearing the phrase"but Israel put God to the test,and rebelled against the MostHigh," Christopher's exaspera-tion burst out at the seams. Heshouted, "I can't believe theykeep doing that!" Then, realizingthat he had startled everyone elsewith his outburst, he ducked hishead and started to laugh at him-self for getting so worked up.

The exasperation Christopherwas voicing parallels a very deepconcern that has been buildingwithin me for years as I have ob-served the disturbing pattern ofgenerational unfaithfulness de-scribed in the Old Testament.Almost inevitably, after one gener-ation experienced God's' favor andresponded by walking in obedi-

ence, the next generation eithervascillated in its commitment toGod or plunged directly into ab-solute apostasy.

As I examine the seemingly in-escapable pattern of a faithful gen-

eration followed by an unfaithfulone, I find myselfasking: Does thishave to happen to us? Is it inevi-table that the generation after uswill falter and fall?

We who have experienced themove of God, particularly in thelast fifteen years through thecharismatic renewal and othermovements in the Church, arepart of a generation which hasexperienced God's favor in an un-precedented way. Already we seethe next generation emerging,both in the natural and the spir-itual. We see our natural offspringgrowing up, preparing to take theirplaces in the adult community, andwe see our spiritual children,those whom we have nurtured andattempted to lead into the ways ofGod, standing at the threshold totake their places in the plan ofGod. Will this next generation befaithful to walk in obedience tothe Lord?

To a great degree, the answerto that question is dependentupon our faithfulness in prepar-ing the next generation of bothour natural and spiritual childrento walk in God's ways. Eli, thepriest who trained Samuel but ne-glected to train his own sons, is agood example of the tragic conse-quences resulting from a father'sfailure in this responsibility.

If we want to avoid his mis-takes, we need to examine tworeasons from the book of Judgesfor Israel's failure in preparingthe next generation, as well as

two ways in which Eli failed withhis sons. If we can apply thoselessons to our own generation,we can learn how to cause oursons to walk in our ways and inGod's ways.

Walk inby Dick Leggatt

Israel's First FailureIsrael's first failure on behalf

of their children was a failure tocreate an environment whichwould enable their children towalk in obedience. They failed bynot dealing ruthlessly with theirenemies. God had commanded theIsraelites to utterly destroy anddrive out the inhabitants of Ca-naan because He knew that ifthey didn't, Israel would soon bedrawn into their idolatrous prac-tices. We see from the first chapterof Judges, however, that theydisobeyed the Lord in this matter.

After a good start in whichthey utterly destroyed a fewcities, Judges 1:19 says, "the menof Judah ... took possession ofthe hill country, but were unableto drive the people from theplains." The other tribes of Israeldid no better. Although they de-feated the Canaanites, they failedto finish the job: "When Israelbecame strong, they pressed theCanaanites into forced labor, butnever drove them out completely"(Judg. 1:28). Victory and forced la-bor were a worthy achievement,but they weren't enough, becausethe influence of the Canaanites re-mained among the people of Is-rael.

Israel's disobedience made Godangry. The angel of the Lord ap-peared to all Israel to remindthem of God's original commandto "make not a covenant with thepeople of this land, but you shallbreak down their altars." ThenNEW WINE

came a word of rebuke and punish-ment for their failure to remove theCanaanites' influence from thePromised Land. They had failedto create an environment for thenext generation which would helpthem to be obedient to God.

How does all this apply to us?Like Israel, we have enemies andidols, but they are primarily inter-nal foes. They are such enemiesas self-indulgence, self-love, re-bellion, perversion-areas of un-righteousness which we may havesubdued but not fully driven outof our lives. All of us have suchareas, and it is obvious that Godis presently requiring His people

.to utterly drive out those internalenemies so that godly characterand righteousness can take theirplace.

Dealing RuthlesslyWhen we talk about "dealing

ruthlessly," we need to under-stand that God doesn;t just wantthose personal enemies capturedor subdued-He wants them putto death. One of the biggest bat-tles in my Christian experienceand one of the most significantones, though it was in a relativelyminor area, was trying to quitsmoking. I had started smokingin high school and gradually gotmore entrenched in the habit incollege, although I was never aheavy smoker. All the while, Iknew it was something God justdidn't want me to do, and theguilt of hiding the habit fromfamily and friends plus God'sever-present conviction eventual-ly persuaded me that I needed toquit.

But not wanting to commitmyself to quitting once and forall, I resolved to first cut downthe amount I was smoking. Grad-ually, I even got to the point ofstopping altogether for short peri-ods of time, and so to my way ofthinking, that meant the habit wasunder control. However, when Iwasn't able to refuse the inevitableopportunities that came to have

an isolated cigarette here andthere, I knew the battle had notbeen won. The habit was sub-dued, but God wanted it to bedead and gone. And it was onlywhen I decided unequivocallynever to smoke again-and neverdid-that I had dealt as ruthlesslywith it as God intended. Goddidn't want smoking held captivein me-He wanted it killed.

One reason God is so insistentthat we deal with such areas is toestablish a precedent for the nextgeneration. All of us who havechildren know that faults in ourcharacter are amplified whenthey emerge in our children. Inthe same way, minor disobedi-ences present in our generationwill become major disobediencesin the next. Liberty in our gener-ation may well turn to license inthe next. For that reason, weneed to devote ourselves to per-sonal holiness, dealing ruthlesslywith the enemies within, drivingout those pockets of rebellionand self-indulgence in our lives.In that way we can create an en-vironment for our natural andspiritual children which will helpthem walk in God's ways.

Besides dealing ruthlessly withour own enemies, we need toteach the next generation, bothby example and precept, howto dobattle with the enemies that willplague them. Judges 3:1 refers tothe generation that followedJosh-ua's as those "who had not expe-rienced any of the wars in Canaan"and thus "had not had previousbattle experience."

We need to prepare a genera-tion that has this kind of "battleexperience." We can do that bytraining those for whom we areresponsible in the next genera-tion to deal ruthlessly with them-

~ have the responsibility tointroduce our children to theprovidential power of the Lord.

selves and their problems. I tendto be lenient on my sons manytimes, and when one of themdoes a sloppy job cleaning up hisroom in order to get outside intime to play with the neighbor-hood boys, my tendency is to say,"It's all right, son, you can finishlater."

I have come to realize, how-ever, that such an approach doesthem no favors. It robs them of achance to get tough with them-selves, and thus to develop some"battle experience." Without be-ing legalistic-which is really nobetter than being lenient-I havebeen requiring mysons, amidst themoans and groans and complaints,to finish the job completely beforemoving on to something else.

We weaken the next genera-tion by allowing them to cater tolittle "enemies" that seem sub-dued. We prepare them best byrequiring that they deal ruthlesslywith these personal self-indul-gences and problems as deadlyfoes that can potentially stand be-tween them and their fulfillmentof God's will.

Israel's Second FailureBesides failing to create an en-

vironment in which God's wayscould prosper in Israel, Joshua'sgeneration failed in the most im-portant task of all-helping thenext generation to know theLord. We read in Judges 2:10:

"After that whole generation hadbeen gathered to their fathers,another generation grew up, whoknew neither the Lord nor whathe had done for Israel." Thatgeneration had no personal rela-tionship with the Lord and nocorporate understanding of theirheritage. Why not? The only con-clusion we can draw is that theprevious generation failed toteach them.

It is frightening to realize thatthose children who were raised inthe midst of Israel's covenantcommunity could grow up notknowing the Lord. If it can hap-pen there, it can happen to us,and that is an even more fright-ening realization. We have ex-perienced the blessing of God inan unprecedented way, both asindividuals and as the corporatebody of Christ. Our children havebeen right beside us as we haveworshiped the Lord in our con-

gregations, seen miraculous an-swers to prayers and heard tre-mendous prophecies and inspiredpreaching. But is that any guar-antee that they actually know theLord? Do we assume that theyhave received the Lord by os-mosis? If we do, we have deceivedourselves.

Just as we have experiencedthe Lord's personal interventionin our lives, our children needtheir own personal experiencesto build on. And it is our respon-sibility to teach and prepare themin a very practical, sensitive wayfor their own encounter with theLord.

I recently came across a scrip-ture in Deuteronomy chapter 11which summarizes this point. Itsays:

Remember today that yourchildren were not the oneswho saw and experienced thediscipline of the Lord yourGod: his majesty, his mightyhand, his outstretched arm;the signs he performed .... Itwas not your children who sawwhat he did for you in thedesert .... But it was your owneyes that sawall these greatthings the Lord has done ...(Dt. 11:2,3,5,7).

Our dynamic experiences of theLord's grace and power are notour children's-they are ours. Forthis very reason, God gives ourgeneration the responsibility to in-troduce our children to the prov-idential power of the Lord, impart-ing to them an understanding oftheir heritage and a sense of awe atall that God has done for us.Joshua's generation failed in thattask. We must not.

Eli's FailureNot long after Hannah brought

Samuel to Eli in the temple it be-came apparent that Samuel wouldbe the heir of Eli's priesthoodrather than Eli's own sons, whowere engaging in every imagin-able wickedness. Most of us arefamiliar with the judgment Godbrought upon Eli's house for hisfailure to restrain his sons whenthey sinned against God. What isless apparent are the enormousconsequences that came upon thepeople of Israel because of Eli'sfailure to correct his sons'apostasy. The result was a genera-tion which would be led by a priestnamed Ichabod, which means "theglory of the Lord has departed."

people for failing to prepare thenext generation, we need to lookat two of Eli's failures so that wecan avoid them. First of all, Elifailed to teach his sons the fear ofthe Lord: the reality of His wrathand the limitations of His grace.With no restraint whatsoever,Eli's sons, Hophni and Phinehas,dishonored the Lord and heldHis offering in contempt. Theysinned grossly in God's sight withtotal disregard for the conse-quences of their actions, or anyfear of punishment from God.

This type of trespassing ofGod's grace is not unique to Eli'ssons-we see it in many Christiancircles today. It takes the form of"greasy grace," with the permis-sive mentality that we can goright on sinning and the Lord willgo right on forgiving since "it'sall under the blood of Jesus."But the proper fear of the Lordwill prevent the next generationfrom falling into the deception ofEli's sons, and violating the boun-daries of God's abundant grace.

Another of Eli's failures wasthat he did not correct a flippan-cy in his sons concerning thepriesthood and the traditions ofGod. His sons thought nothing oftotally discarding God's meticu-lous instructions for the priest-hood and thus cutting themselvesoff from former faithful genera-tions of priests. Because of theseand other violations, God broughtswift retribution on Eli and hissons: All of them died on thesame day, struck down by God'shand of judgment. We need toimpart to the next generation ahealthy respect for the traditionsGod has established and a propersense of awe and humility aboutGod's calling on our lives.

NEW WINE

IntercedingIronically enough, though God

used Samuel to judge Eli's failureas a father, Samuel himself laterfailed to train his own sons towalk in God's ways. Scripturerecords that when it came timefor Samuel to pass on the mantleof leadership to his sons, theelders of Israel came to him andsaid: "Vou are old, and your sonsdo not walk in your ways; nowappoint a king to lead us, such asall the other nations have" (1Sam. 8:5 NIV). The fact thatSamuel could understand theimportance of training sons prop-erly and still fail to do it shouldbe sobering to us. It is possiblefor me to write and for you toread this article, be firmly con-vinced of all it says, and yetneglect to teach our childrenGod's ways.

Recognizing this critical re-sponsibility should send us to ourknees in prayer. In fact, when allis said and done, probably themost important way we can pre-pare the next generation is tobegin interceding now for theirsurvival and steadfastness in thefaith. For the adversary, knowingtheir importance to the further-ance of God's kingdom, will levelevery manner of attack againstthem.

A few years ago that truth wasmade very real to me. My wife,Cindi, called unexpectedly at theoffice to tell me that our youngestson, Ben, had fallen out of bedwhile taking his nap. The areaaround his collar bone was swell-ing ominously, indicating a possi-ble fracture (which was later con-firmed by x-rays). As I racedhome from the office to take Bento the doctor, I was expressing

my frustration to the Lord aboutthe freak accident.

"But, Lord," I protested, "Ipray every day for the boys' pro-tection. What more can I do?"

Even as I finished my thought,I sensed the Lord responding tomy troubled Question with a Ques-tion of His own: "How would yoube praying for your sons if theywere serving on some foreign bat-tlefield?"

"More fervently than I amnow," I admitted.

God's answer seemed so clear:"How much more then with thebattlefield they are on here."

My prayer is that God willgrant our generation faithfulnessto intercede and to prepare the fol-lowing generation. With His gracethey can grow to become a genera-tion that walks in our ways and inGod's ways....

"Don't Forget Us!"an interview with Charles Ross

Charles Ross is the pastor of Covenant of SaltCommunity in Syracuse, New York. He and hiswife, Nedra, recently traveled to Hungary to meetwith believers there in several house churches. Inthe following interview Charles provides a glimpseof the deep commitment and the many needs ofChristians living in the Communist nations ofEastern Europe.

New Wine: How would you describe the govern-ment's relationship to the Church in Hungary?Charles Ross: Hungary has been under Commu-nist control since 1947. In the last few years the po-litical situation in that country, as well as through-out the whole Eastern Bloc, has become more tense-as is evident from the continuing crisis with Soli-darity in Poland.

The churches in Hungary have very limited free-dom. The government exercises extremely tightcontrol of the leadership in the official ReformedLutheran Church, where pastors must take an oathof loyalty to the state in order to minister. Someevangelical or "free churches" grew up as a result ofthe move of the HolySpirit in the years 1939 through1946, when a revival took place during the war.

These small free churches have continued tomultiply, but they are not recognized by the govern-ment and as a result are forced to meet illegally.Unfortunately, an increasing number of the pastors

of these unregistered churches are being arrested.A growing number of Christians there are in prison,and those who have not been imprisoned live incontinual fear. Nevertheless, the Lord is movingthere, especially among the young people who con-tinue to meet illegally despite the risks involved.

An additional problem for Christians in Hungaryis that Bibles are virtually impossible to obtainthere. Any Bibles they have are smuggled in byChristians from the West. One of the most influen-tial ministries in the Eastern Bloc, Trans WorldRadio, is helping the believers in this regard byreading the Scriptures over the air slowly enoughfor listeners to write them down.

NW: Did you encounter any difficulties tryingto enter the country?CR: Anyone wishing to enter Hungary for anyreason must first pass through three checkpointscomplete with guards, police dogs, gun towers andbarbed wire. In the process, your photograph istaken, your visa is checked, and you are personallysearched many times. Often the car you are in isdismantled, bolt by bolt, as the guards search for il-legal material. But sometimes they do none of this.You never know exactly what they'll do as you try toenter the country.

As we approached the second checkpoint toenter Hungary, we saw that there were eleven ortwelve guards searching the cars in front of us. TheChristian man who was with us, and who had crossedthe border many times before, commented that hehad never seen this many guards at a checkpointbefore. As we were waiting our turn to be searched Iprayed, "Lord Jesus, if You could just send thesemen to lunch or something, we'd really appreciateit." Sure enough, four or five minutes later nine orten of them got in their truck and drove away. Sowhen we got to the checkpoint there were only twoguards left, and they just gave us a quick lookoverand waved us through. We were carrying some liter-ature-a Christian songbook, a Bible and someother books-that would have been considered il-legal. So we were very grateful that the Lordprevented them from searching us.

We have learned, however, that the authoritiesdon't always detain you at the border if they're sus-picious of you. Sometimes they will let you enterand then follow you, because that way you may leadthem to an illegal gathering of Christians. For thatreason, once you make it into the country you haveto exercise extreme caution so that your actionswon't jeopardize the believers there.

When we finally reached our first destination, allof our movements had to be clandestine. We werevisiting one of the illegal free churches, so we hadto be careful in choosing the route to the meeting,

NW: Were you invited to visit other countries inthe Eastern Bloc?CR: Yes, we received an invitation to visit somechurches in Romania as well. In fact, just a few days

NW: If the meetings are held in secret, how didthe nonbelievers know where to come?CR: They were invited personally by friends,although of course the believers have to be verycautious about any kind of evangelism-anyonecould be a member of the secret police. The con-cepts of loyalty, trust and covenant we talk about somuch have a serious meaning there, because Chris-tians know that if a friend brings the wrong person,the entire fellowship could be jeopardized.

For this reason the church members all use"cover names." Very few of them know each other'sreal names. That way, if they are arrested and inter-rogated, they can only give cover names, and in thisway the others are somewhat protected. Trustingrelationships are a critical need for Christiansthere; yet at the same time people are reluctant toopen up their lives to one another because of therisk of exposure to the authorities.

I realized just how much their commitment cancost them when I saw many of them bring their chil-dren to the meeting. When believers attend withtheir Bibles and their children, they know they arejeopardizing their families. The police could arrestthem for meeting illegally and take their childrenaway simply for owning Bibles. But that's the kindof price they are willing to pay.

NW: What took place in your meeting with thefree church members?CR: Once the meeting was underway, we couldsense the presence of the Lord in a powerful way.After a time of worship together, one especiallytouching moment came when the believers sang forus the entire album Courts of the King, which mywife, Nedra, had participated in producing here inAmerica. Evidently, when they found out earlierthat she would be coming, they translated thealbum into Hungarian and learned it so they couldhonor her by singing it.

The Spirit of the Lord moved mightily in themeeting that night. I spoke on the theme of "TheAlternate Society" -serious talk in a nation such asHungary, because it has political implications. AfterI spoke many were healed and some received deliv-erance as well. Five or six people made an initialcommitment to the Lord that night-not because ofan "invitation" but simply because they heard adeclaration of the kingdom of God.

It's important to remember that when people inHungary make a commitment to the Lord, theymust "count the cost" in ways most Western Chris-tians never have to. For them, simply being baptizedcould mean losing a job or even going to prison.

The fellowship we met with has doubled in thelast year, which is of course encouraging. Yet at thesame time, there's increasing concern because ofthe high profile of a large group, and the corre-sponding greater risk. What's more, other churchesexert pressure on them to register with the state.But they have to resist such pressure, because oncethey're registered, the government knows who theyare and has the names of all the people who aremeeting. Government officials also have access tomeetings of registered groups, monitoring what issaid and done. The people are unable to worshipand speak freely when the church is registered.

before we were to leave for Romania, a letter camefrom one of the groups we were to visit saying howexcited they were about our coming. We too wereanticipating the trip with joy, looking forward to go-ing in and strengthening the church.

But as we were praying about it one day, webegan to feel some resistance in our spirits. Whenwe began to prepare for the trip, we felt evengreater spiritual restraint, similar to the dilemmaPaul must have experienced in Acts when the HolySpirit resisted his visit to Asia. We couldn't under-stand why God was resisting our going, but we feltwe shouldn't proceed with our planned trip. Wedeeply regretted not going because we had no way tolet the Romanian believers know we weren't coming.We couldn't just send a telegram or make a phonecall as we would here, because the meetings had tobe planned secretly weeks in advance.

So we didn't go, and though it grieved us, we feltit was the will of the Lord, even though we didn'tunderstand why at the time. But the day after we re-turned to the U.S., the pastor who had been plan-ning to take us to Romania called and said, "Now Iunderstand why the Lord resisted us." It turned outthat the Romanian secret police were watching thisparticular group of Christians, and on the veryweekend we would have been there, the policebroke in on the meeting, arrested a number ofthem, took their key leader to a labor camp andsubsequently killed him.

Christians in Romania are experiencing anincreasing wave of arrests, brutality and tortures.This is not hearsay; we have first-hand reports frombelievers who have witnessed the persecution.Christians in the West need to know this.

NW: What was your overall impression of thespirit of the believers you encountered inHungary?CR: As amazing as it may seem, I would have to say

that a spirit of joy was most prominent among theChristians there. The fact that we cared enoughabout them to come and be with them made themecstatic, and encouraged them that Christians inthe West really do care.

Christians in Eastern Europe look to us in theWest for spiritual support. As we left they said,"Don't forget us. When are you coming back?"Even now I can see their faces as I'm talking-theyare such dear people, and so eager to learn aboutthe things of God.

We also witnessed in the Christians there a spiritof genuine faithfulness. When they hear teachingabout the kingdom of God, they embrace it enthu-siastically. It gives them hope for the future. For in-stance, we recently taught about tithing there, andbecause of their faithfulness, the believers havefound that it works. They tithe, even though theycan be arrested for it, and God is honoring theirfaithfulness. The people are finding they can getjobs despite high unemployment, and they are get-ting clothing and food despite severe shortages.

God is setting the people apart in a distinctiveway. It's exciting to see the spiritual principles weknow to be true working even in that kind of en-vironment.

NW: What would you say is the greatest needthere at this time?CR: Our major concern right now for Christians inEastern Europe is leadership. We need to pray thatGod will establish leaders there, and that they willreceive teaching that can raise up strong leadershipfrom among their people. Too often fellowshipsthere are just loose gatherings of Christians with noone to guide them in any way.

A second major concern is the children, becausethey are the leaders of tomorrow. The Communistsystem makes training the children in propaganda apriority, so we need to pray that we can help themdevelop teaching materials for children so they cantrain their future leaders in a godly way.

The believers in Eastern Europe need prayer forprotection from being discovered. We need to praythat they'll have the wisdom to deal with the prob-lems of growth-for example, knowing how to han-dle newcomers when a pastor already has 150 peo-ple meeting in his living room who have to meet insecret.

We need to pray that God will grant these peoplethe grace to stand when they are going throughphysical torture and intimidation. We also must askGod to turn the hearts of key Communist leaders inhigh places. Finally, we certainly need to pray thatGod will grant wisdom to those of us in the West sothat we can best utilize the resources we have avail-able on behalf of believers in the East. ...

NEW WINE

Few things are closer to agirl's heart than her father.

My dad worked long, hardhours all of his life, and when hewas home I was always anxious tobe with him. I was the oldest of .eight children, so it was difficultto find time alone with Dad. If hehad to drive to the grocery storein the evening, we all wouldscramble to ask, "Can we go withyou?" I'm sure that after workingall day he would have enjoyedsome peace and quiet, but heusually said yes and chose one ofus to ride with him. Since my dadwasn't much of a talker, when myturn came we usually drove si-lently to and from the store. But Iloved being with him, and I fondly

remember those times. (Nowwhen my own children want toride along, I smile. It's hard forme to say no.)

A SingerMy dad was a singer. He never

sang in front of anyone exceptour family, but his pleasant,soothing voice could be heardthroughout our home most any-time, especially when he worked.Even as he read the newspaper,his fingers would be tapping out atune on the kitchen table.

Myfather believed in God. Weattended Mass every Sunday at alarge Catholic Church in ourneighborhood. I still rememberDad kneeling there, his headbowed in silent prayer. We wouldall follow. his example until thecollection basket was passed on along pole by one of the ushers.We didn't have much extra mon-ey, so Dad couldn't always con-tribute. But when the basketcame our way, he would keep hishead bowed and all of us children

would pretend to put in money.Despite his undisturbed counte-nance, I'm convinced that my fa-ther often wanted to crawl underthe pew!

Sometimes at night, when Itiptoed out of bed, I would findMom and Dad praying on theirknees in their bedroom. What ajoy it is to remember that scene.Only now have I begun to realizewhat an impact those lovingprayers had on my life.

My parents not only prayed

together, they laughed togetherand enjoyed each other. Theywere truly in love, and all of usknew it. I loved to watch themalways hugging each other. Theycouldn't afford fancy restaurantsor long vacations, but they tookpleasure in special times, such asa simple stroll hand in handthrough the park. Their love andaffection brought me a genuinesense of security.

A Diamond PendantAll of us were with my father

when he died of lung cancer onOctober 31, 1980. He was fifty-three years old. We had watchedhim suffer as he had lived-quiet-ly, never complaining and with aspecial sense of humor that en-abled us to laugh through ourtears.

After he was buried, I receiveda small diamond pendant as a spe-cial remembrance of my father. Ienjoyed wearing it and often toldothers the meaning it held for me.

One evening after returninghome from a friend's house, Idiscovered the pendant had fallenoffmy neck. The chain was brokenin the middle and the diamond haddisappeared. I searched throughmy clothes and retraced every stepI had taken. My friend searchedher home and car, but the dia-mond was gone. A strange numb-ness came over me when I realizedwhat had happened. But I couldn't.cry-nothing could ever takeaway my memories of Dad. Evenso, I knew my Heavenly Fatherwould understand if I prayed asimple prayer asking Him toreturn it to me.

A Significant TimeFour months later, our family

planned to join hundreds of oth-ers traveling from our home inKentucky to a conference in Gran-by, Colorado. We knew the Lordhad appointed it to be a significanttime, and an air of expectancy sur-rounded our preparations.

leave, however, my mouth be-came covered with sores. My lipswere swollen and I could barelyeat or talk. Nevertheless, withprayers and encouragement frommy husband and family, I madethe long three-day trip anyway.

After the first two days I beganto feel better. The congregationalworship and the messages aboutfamily and heritage were healingmy body as well as feeding myspirit. And then one afternoon,God visited me.

I was washing some clothes byhand in the bathroom sink. Thestopper was up and I noticed adark speck on the rim of thedrain. At first I thought it was abug, but when I looked closer Icouldn't believe my eyes-forthere in the sink in a cabin inColorado, hundreds of milesaway from where I lost it, was mydiamond! I cried out and ran tofind my husband. When I foundhim, all I could do was hold out

my hand with the diamond andcry. The Lord had truly performeda miracle. As the news spread toother families we all began crying

and rejoicing in the Lord.

A Jewel of a DadI guess if I thought hard

enough I might be able to comeup with some "logical" explana-tion for how the diamond couldhave appeared where it did. Butafter all is said and done, it seemsmore reasonable to me simply tosay that God reached down andtouched some lives that day. Iknow in my heart that the Lordreturned my diamond to me inthe mountains of Colorado be-

cause He loves me and hearseven the simplest of prayers. Healso showed me how special mydad and I are to Him-special

enough to show me a small butsignificant sign of His compas-sion and understanding.

Only our Heavenly Father fullyappreciates what a jewel an earthlyfather can be in his daughter'slife. I'm so thankful for my jewelof a dad-the one who gave mesong, laughter and security, whowas an example of love and cour-age that I pray will be reflected inme. Once again I wear my jewelproudly as a remembrance ofhim-but now I rejoice to know itis a gift from both my fathers ....

"Yes, sir."He walked slowly over to

great-grandpa, then stood quietlybeside him for a while. "Hi, great-grandpa," Jamie finally said,almost in a whisper. "I'm Jamie,Tom Ryan's son .... "

"I know who you are," great-grandpa interrupted. They wereboth still for some time, thengreat-grandpa looked at Jamieand smiled.

"I'll bet you'd rather be anyplace than this family reunion,wouldn't you?"

His first thought was to findsome way to escape from all this .Looking to his right, he saw anempty picnic bench close by andwent to sit down. Jamie sat andwatched the goings-on for a whileand decided that he was evenmore bored this year than last.Just then, he happened to catchhis father's glance.

"Jamie," his dad said as hewalked towards him, "why don'tyou go over and talk to great-grandpa? He's all by himself,too."

The boy looked over at the oldman sitting on a lawn chair in theshade. Jamie had always beenafraid of him. There was no goodreason for the fear-in fact,

Jamie opened his eyes and sawthe sunlight streaming in his

bedroom window."Bummer! Why didn't it rain

today?" he complained as hedragged himself out of bed. To-day was his family's big picnicand reunion, and Jamie had beendreading it for months. He dressedreluctantly and went downstairsto join his parents and three littlesisters for breakfast.

Jamie's mother was bustlingaround the kitchen, packing last-minute sandwiches into the pic-nic basket, and his sisters weregiggling and chattering as usual.Jamie took his place at the tableand half-heartedlymunched on histoast. His father, drinking coffeeand reading the paper, looked upto see Jamie's long face.

"Quit pouting, son," he saidsternly.

Jamie straightened up in hisseat and finished his breakfastquietly. But he couldn't helpwishing that he could go find hisbest friend, Jacob, and ride bikeswith him.

In the car on the way to thepicnic, Jamie wished he wereback home. But it was no usewishing, for they soon arrived,and immediately some of hisaunts and uncles came forward togreet them. Aunt Jean alwayssaid the same thing: "My, butyou've grown!" Then, as usual,she pinched Jamie's cheek. Hissisters squealed as Uncle John

his great-grandpa's hand andwalked with him to the tables. Asthey walked together, he sudden-ly felt proud of his family and helooked up admiringly at his great-grandpa.

"You know what, great-grandpa? One day, when I'mgrown and have a boy of my own,I'm going to tell him about yourfather and all about how he cameto this country."

Great-grandpa looked down atJamie and smiled. "You do that,son, and you be sure to tell him,too, like your daddy told you,about the Lord Jesus. If youteach him to fear God like mydaddy taught me, I don't knowanything you could do betterthan that." ...

5. He prepares his family for life's most difficult moments. Nomatter how bad the problem, he never allows himself or his familyto run from it.

4. He provides motivation and direction for the family's endeav-ors. Each family member's special gifts and abilities are drawnout by the heritage man.

3. He gives vision and perspective to his wife and children. Thedaily challenges he presents to his family members are biggerthan any of them. Yet through his leadership they are able tomeet those challenges as they all work together.

2. He gives identity to the members of his family. His love, com-passion and understanding give security and rest to his wife. Hetrains his sons in manliness and encourages his daughters togrow into genuine womanhood ..

Abraham was a "heritage man." Out of this one father's faithful-ness to his family, God produced a strong nation. What is a "heritageman"? He is a father with the broader picture in mind:

Jamie looked around at hislarge family, and marveled thatthey all in fact did come from justone man who came to this countryso long ago. Just then, his UncleWilliam called out, "Soup's on!"

"Way back-many, many yearsago, in about 1889-my papacame to this country. He was onlya boy-just sixteen. He came fromthe old country. He came with a vi-sion of a better life and a blessingfrom his father, and he yearnedfor adventure. He was a God-fear-ing soul, and a hard worker.

"As the years passed, he sawhis way clear to build himself asmall farm. It was about that timehe met my sweet mother. I canstill see her, with long golden-redhair in braids wrapped round andround her head like a crown. Itwasn't too long before my broth-ers and I were born. There werethree of us: my older brotherDrew, my younger brother Ger-ald, and me. My father loved usand taught us to fear God, too,and when we grew to be men, wefound ourselves wives. You nevermet your great-grandmother,Jamie, but your father did."

"Yes," Jamie said. "Dad toldme about her."

"Well, so you see, our liveswent on. Your great-grandma and Ihad our own family.Our oldest sonis your grandpa, sitting right overthere." He pointed to Jamie'sgrandpa, and Jamie stared wide-eyed as if he'd never seen hisgrandpa before. He had just nev-er thought of his grandpa as hav-ing been a little boy once; hethought that grandpa had just al-ways been grandpa. But Jamie'sthoughts were interrupted as great-grandpa continued his story.

"I raised my children and triedto teach them the ways of Godand the ways of the Bible, andthey all grew up to be men andwomen that I can be proud of.Your grandpa was married, andhis firstborn son was your daddy.Now here you are, your father'soldest son. So you see, I haveseen five generations in this fami-30

A final comment onthis month's theme

When I was seven years oldmy father decided it was

time for me to learn to shoot agun. He was an expert marks-man, and more than anythingelse I yearned to be like him. Soon the appointed day I stoodtrembling with excitement at theedge of a farm pasture while heset a tin can on a fence post thirtyfeet away and stepped aside.

The firearm I held was a singleshot .410 gauge shotgun. I slippeda shell into the barrel and closedthe breech as my father hadtaught me. I pulled back the ham-mer with both thumbs and care-fully pointed the gun until thebead of the gunsight on the frontend of the barrel covered the tincan. Then I pulled the trigger.

The little .410 went off with abang-but the can never moved. Ifired two more rounds but thecan remained serenely atop thepost. I turned to my father indismay. "Why do I keep missing?"I cried. "I put the front sight righton the can, but I still missed!"NEW WINE

Then my father explained:"Son. you need more than thebead on the muzzle of the gun.You must aim along the entirelength of the barrel. The frontbead must not only cover thetarget; it must be centered in the

rear sight as well. Then you'll hitwhat you're aiming at."

Carefully following his advice,I fired once again and shoutedwith delight when the shot-riddledcan flew five feet backward off thepost. I learned a significant lessonthat day-namely, that a longerperspective can make a great dif-ference. The total length of thegun barrel provided an accurateperspective the front bead alonecould never provide.

Christians often need to learnthe same lesson. We need thelonger perspective that heritageprovides. Too often we try tobuild solely on the subjectivereality of current experience.From a perspective just as limitedas the front sight on a gun barrel,we aim for goals we may neverreach, ignoring the long barrel ofrevelation and the rear sight oftruth and experience which Godgraciously granted our spiritualfathers and grandfathers.

We should remember that theplace we presently occupy inGod, no matter how unique, nomatter how rich in grace and giftsit may seem to be, is not just anisolated private point. Rather, itis but a present, momentary stopon an unbroken line. To appre-ciate fully the significance ofwhere we presently stand, wemust take into account thecontribution of past generations.We are debtors to our heritage,as Paul reminded the Corinthians:

Did the word of God originatewith you? Or are you the only

people it has reached? (1 Cor.14:36 NIV).

Heritage reflects the faithful-ness of a covenant-keeping Godfrom generation to generation.The scriptural record of God'sdealings with His people is therecord of a heritage of continuinginstruction and impartation ofHis life to a stubborn people. Asit waS passed on, the importanceof that heritage was passed on toeach succeeding generation.

It is heritage which links us,generation by generation, withGod's redemptive purpose in his-tory and specifically with our ownspiritual destiny. What is our re-sponsibility concerning our her-itage? I suggest four things:

I. We must receive our heritagegratefully, as a legacy fromthose who have gone on before.2. We must embrace our heri-tage and claim it for our own.3. We must enrich our heri-tage with our own finest ex-periences, revelations andtraditions.4. We must faithfully transmitour heritage to the genera-tions which follow us.

Heritage, properly cherishedand faithfully communicated,helps provide the motivation weneed as the people of God tobecome a more righteous peoplewith each succeeding generation.As this issue of New Wine bothexamines and testifies to the sig-nificance of heritage, our hope isthat it will provide both inspira-tion and direction for those of uswho yearn for a deeper under-standing and a clearer identifi-cation with the experiences,values and traditions of ourforebears. We also pray that itwill inspire a commitment in allof us to become faithful stewardsof our heritage, that it may bepreserved, enriched and carefullyentrusted to those who will becoming after us.
