Teaching and learning

You will be able to access your child’s end of year report on COMPASS from Tuesday 10th

December. Please also take some time out to go over their See Saw updates that have now replaced their learning diaries. If you wish to discuss the report with your child’s teacher, please make arrangements to meet with them prior to the BBQ on December 12th.

We have also had a transition morning on Tuesday when students spent some time in the classroom that we have identified would best meet their needs. Following the session, staff have got together to provide feedback on the session. The feedback will inform any changes to the groups that may take place before our next transition day which will be on Tuesday, December 10th.

Class groups for 2020 will be finalised by the following Tuesday.

International Day of People with Disability

In recognition of the United Nations International Day of People with Disability on Tuesday, we had a visit from three members of Footscray Police who spent one and half hours interacting with our students. Many students had the opportunity to put on a police hat and vest and got to explore the police vehicle. Apart from having a lot of fun, the visit by the officers also reinforced that the role of the police officers is to keep everyone safe and that we all can speak to the officers if we need assistance.

The theme for this year’s International Day of Disability was “promoting the participation of persons with disabilities and their leadership.” All students in the Secondary Learning area made posters about themselves highlighting their leadership and students in the Primary Learning Area promoted what they like to participate in.

At YSDS we want to promote a dynamic culture that celebrates people's differences, leveraging the unique ideas, capabilities and experiences of our diverse members of the community.

We continue to provide many opportunities to learn how we can all contribute to creating an inclusive school that reflects the needs of our students, staff and the wider school community, and in particular to understand more about the importance of inclusivity and the options available to better accommodate disabilities.

We will be celebrating disability across the school till the end of the school year. Our end of Year assembly, BBQ and reports are a celebration of the achievements the students at YSDS have made. Students will also have opportunities to communicate their strengths to their teachers and peers during transition day.

Don’t forget to complete and send back the reply sheet for End of Year BBQ on Thursday December 12th.The evening will be a celebration with the families and there will be lots of fun and entertaining activities for the young ones. This year, we will extended the entertainment provided by “balloon man” with a jumping castle. On the evening, we will have time allocated to see your child’s classroom teacher to discuss their reports if you wish to.

We will also be holding an end of year assembly on Thursday December 19th at 2:30 pm. Please note that Thursday December 19th will be the last day for students and that school will finish at normal time 3:00 pm.
