EDITION 30: October 9 2015 Valley View Welcome to this week’s edi- tion of the Valley View. Every Victorian child should have access to the world of learning opportunities that exist beyond the classroom. School camps provide children with inspiring learning experiences in the great outdoors, excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how the world works and sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership. All are part of a healthy curriculum. This week our Year 3 and 4 students have been enjoying the sunshine and an incredible range of learning experiences that Phillip Island of- fers. The three day camp, in which 44 students attended, concludes today. At BVPS, we have a very well- considered camping program that consists of a camping experience for each Learning Neighbourhood that has been refined over a peri- od of many years. For our Year 2 students we offer the onsite over- night sleepover in November. In Year 3 or 4, BVPS students are given the opportunity to take part in a three day/two night camp and in Year 5 or 6, students head off on a five day adventure camp that is specifically designed for senior primary students and their devel- oping independence. The goals of the BVPS camping program are to: Provide all children with the opportunity to participate in a sequential camping program Provide shared class experi- ences and a sense of group cohesiveness Reinforce and extend class- room learning’s Provide a program that deliv- ers skills and knowledge that may lead to a lifelong involvement in worthwhile leisure pursuits Provide a program that pro- motes self-esteem, re- sourcefulness, independ- ence, leadership, judge- ment, cooperation and tolerance The feedback from staff, students and parents helps to shape the program for future campers and so I am looking forward to hearing the stories from the campers when they return later on in the day. I spent the first night with the Year 3/4 campers on Wednesday night at CYC ‘The Island’ and I can report that all students had settled in so very - very well. Ms Bianco replaced me for the second evening because it’s great for us as leaders to get an accurate sense of the level of learning and interaction. Although the staff and students will be exhausted when they return, I know that they have such a powerful experiences that they will want to share with their families in the coming days. We look forward to growing the school camping program to include an increasing number of participants into the future. I would like to thank Mr Nathan Gage and the Learning Neighbourhood 2 Teach- ing Team for their tremendous and selfless work in organising this learning experience for our kids. I would like to thank the families that have supported the ‘No Hat No Play’ rule that the school has implemented and let everyone know that Sun-Smart approved hats are available at the office for the very reasonable price of $7. Have a great weekend and I look forward to seeing you all here on Monday. Kind regards, Andrew Jones

Welcome to this week’s edi-tion of the Valley View. Every Victorian child should have access to the world of learning opportunities that exist beyond the classroom. School camps provide children with inspiring learning experiences in the great outdoors, excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how the world works and sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership. Learning Neighbourhood 1 LN1 News A big welcome back to our final term for the year! We are always so proud of our students when they return to school after the holidays, they quickly settle straight back into the routine and are constantly eager to learn. This week has been no exception, and what a week of learning it has been! It started with something

disgusting! Students were given a range of ingredients and had to cre-ate a disgusting sandwich which included at least one taste test. Sandwich crea-tions included pickles with anchovy paste and sprinkles, mayonnaise with sauce and vegemite and the very disgusting mixture of honey, sul-t a na s , s a u c e a nd m us -t a r d … . m m m m m m m m m m

YUCK! All this to provide them with a fun learning experi-ence to launch them straight back into focusing on character’s feel-ings when reading texts. They h a v e e x -p lo red o t h e r w o r d s t h a t m e a n t h e

same as disgusting including re-pulsive, gross, horrible and ghast-ly. Here are some great examples of what disgust-ing looks like on the faces of some of the kids as they ‘enjoy’ their culinary creations.

Broadmeadows Valley Primary has its first ever winner of the Spanish Language Writing Compe-tition in schools around Victoria. There were 14 schools participat-ing with a total number of 243 participants. Younes Younes from P1/2 S won the third prize with his drawing based on the Spanish art-ist Joan Miró. Congratulations Younes!

Learning Neighbourhood 3 We can’t believe it is Term 4. Eve-ryone has come back energised and ready for a great Term 4. Our neighbourhood has been moved around. The teachers have moved spaces and so have the students. Although we are sad that Inter-school Sport has finished for the year, the grade 6s are happy that practice for the graduation dance has started and the Grade 5s are designing a Grade 6 jumper for next year.

In reading, we have started to learn about all things Australia – from the flag, explorers, gold rush and famous landmarks. It has been great learning about our country as there are many things we have learnt already. We have been im-proving our comprehension by us-ing the synthesising strategy. It was very difficult to understand at the start but we now have a strong understanding as we continue to practice the skill. In writing, we finished up our Infor-mation reports and are now moving into writing “Historical Narratives”. We will be using all the information we learn in our reading sessions to use in our writing. This week we have an occupation from the 1800s and have to use subject and tech-nical words to make our narratives more realistic. It has been challeng-ing but really fun. We are finally onto fractions. The teachers want to thank parents for helping their children learn their number facts over the holidays. The difference has been massive which will make learning fractions so much easier. Please continue to remind your children to keep prac-ticing every day so it becomes au-tomatic. In Enrichment, our unit on Australi-an History has begun. This week we have been learning about the different states and capital cities in Australia and have made a timeline on some of the most important events in Australia. Students during this unit will get the opportunity to design, create and work in groups! Have a great week! LN3
