From the Head of Junior School Dear Parents Yesterday, we held our swimming carnival for the youngest boys at the School. This involved boys from Prep to Year 3 (under 5 to under 8 year olds). This carnival is held towards the end of third term each year quite deliberately. All boys from Prep to Year 3 have a swimming lesson each week of the year as part of their Toowoomba Grammar School experience. Having the swimming carnival later in the year ensures all our Prep students have had three terms of swimming lessons prior to the event. These boys are then much better placed to enjoy their first swimming carnival and for some, they have already progressed to the 25-metre pool and can swim competitively. It was pleasing to see so many parents in attendance supporting the boys. Congratulations to Stephens for winning the carnival and to Taylor for earning the House Spirit Trophy.

Fathers’ Day Breakfast The annual Junior School Fathers’ Day Breakfast was held on Friday 31 August. Fathers and sons gathered around the Pavilion in the early morning sunshine to share a fully catered breakfast. I thank Mrs Bliss Bierhoff, President of the Junior School Supporters’ Group, for co-ordinating a group of parents to run such a great event. In addition, the Fathers’ Day gift stall organised and run by Mrs Nikki Marsden and a group of mothers ensured the boys could select gifts for their fathers. I thank Nikki and all the parents who assisted with this important event. I trust Fathers’ Day was an enjoyable occasion for all our School families.

Year 3 Billycart Day On the same day as the Fathers’ Day Breakfast, Year 3 boys, their fathers and grandfathers spent the day constructing and racing billycarts. This annual event involved breakfast, some sport, billycart construction and then racing in the Margaret Street driveway area. This was a day the boys and their fathers will remember for years to come and while billycarts are the product, the most important aspect of the day involved fathers spending time with their sons. I congratulate Miss Tiffany Holzheimer, our Year 3 teacher, for the organisation that went into such a wonderful event.

Staff News As was announced earlier this term, Mrs Jan Heffernan, Head of Teaching and Learning in the Junior School, will retire at the end of the year. I am pleased to inform you that an existing staff member, Mr Rob Jeffries has been appointed as our new Head of Teaching and Learning commencing at the start of next year. Mr Jeffries currently teaches Year 6 at our School, is our Co-ordinator of Years 4 to 6 and is Housemaster of Mackintosh. I congratulate Mr Jeffries on his appointment and look forward to his further contributions in due course. Prep to Year 6 Musical – “Madagascar: A Musical Adventure”

The combined efforts of boys and staff come together next week with four performances of our P – 6 musical, Madagascar. A full dress rehearsal was held on Tuesday, which set the mood nicely for next week. Best wishes to all staff and students for a success performance week. Holidays School holidays commence next week on Thursday 20 September at 3.10pm. School resumes on Tuesday 9 October at 8.25am, with boys returning in summer uniform. I thank the boys and staff for their significant work over the past term and wish all a relaxing and enjoyable school holiday. Regards Scott Campbell Head of Junior School

From the Deputy Head of Junior School When we return in Term 4, the boys will revert back to summer uniform. As stated in the Student Handbook, the school uniform is as follows: TGS ‘Blues’ – TGS shirt, shorts, socks (with garters), black leather shoes and TGS hat (Akubra – Year 4 to 6; Sports hat – Prep to Year 3). Co-curricular Clubs Co-curricular Clubs will not be held in week 10 to allow for the musical. Co-curricular clubs will recommence in Week 1 of Term 4. Have a great holiday and I look forward to seeing some refreshed boys in Term 4. Mike Sharpe Deputy Head of Junior School

From Head of Teaching and Learning A Term of Rich and Varied Experiences During Term Three, the boys have been engaged in a variety of “hands-on” learning activities that have stretched their imagination, developed their problem solving skills and enhanced their resilience and persistence. From the building of billycarts to Book Week activities, the boys have been engaged in planning, executing and reflecting on their learning. Literacy activities included workshops with visiting author, Kathryn Apel, a Year 3 literacy morning with girls from Glennie and Fairholme and attendance at a performance of “Josephine Wants to Dance” for the Prep to Year 2 classes. As a result of these authentic experiences, the boys have a toolbox of ideas to use in the future. Preparing and presenting Book Week displays is one way the boys are given the opportunity to develop awareness of another’s perspective, recognise different skills and celebrate the success of others. During the preparation stage, the boys listen to all ideas, acknowledge individual talents and work collaboratively with their teacher and each other to present their work. I am sure that like me, you were amazed by the quality and creativity of each Doorway. Billycart Day is a much loved event in the school year. By working with their fathers, the boys learnt to use tools and follow instructions precisely so that their billycart could successfully navigate the main school driveway. The ICAS English and Mathematics testing program provided some challenging scenarios that required the boys to stretch their problem-solving skills while at the same time demonstrating their developing resilience and persistence. The boys of the Junior School have engaged with the curriculum through building, manipulating materials and engaging in authentic activities. Learning by doing is exactly what boys love! GPS Sport Thank you to the coaches of the GPS basketball and rugby teams for preparing the boys each week for their games.

Football Our Year 5 and Year 6 teams are performing well in the Friday afternoon competition. The improvement in the players is noticeable and I would like to thank their coaches for working on the skills the boys need to play each week. Tomorrow is the last round of fixtures for the term. Junior School Swimming Carnival Yesterday, we held the Under 5 – Under 8 House Swimming Carnival. It was a fantastic day and the boys were enthusiastic and motivated. I was impressed with the spirit displayed and the ‘have a go’ attitude adopted by the boys. It was a great competition with Stephens House (264 points) winning the shield followed by Boyce (256 points). The House Spirit Trophy was awarded to Taylor. Thank you to all the families who came along and supported the boys. Congratulations to the following boys who were awarded age champion and runner-up: Year Age Champion Runner Up

A program has been designed for boys of this age and the centre will provide instructors to coach the boys. Term 4 Sport Trials Last week Mrs Pratt sent an email home for the boys in Year 4 – 6 to nominate for their Term 4 sport selections. All boys should have completed this by now. Trials for the Term 4 sports will occur on Tuesday 18 September and Wednesday 19 September. Could you please ensure the boys in Years 4 – 6 bring in their sports uniform on both of these days. I hope you have a great holiday and I look forward to seeing you all in Term 4.

Juert won his silver medals in the Boys 12 years 50m Butterfly, Boys 12 years 100m Individual Medley and the Boys 12 years 50m Backstroke. Chess Report It has been a very exciting few weeks in the world of Chess at Toowoomba Grammar School. The internal Junior School Chess Championship concluded after 5 weeks of gripping competition with some unexpected twists and with boys rising high to challenge their peers. Jett Heffernan (Year 5) has come away as the champion this year with Oliver Clifford (Year 6) as runner-up. Theo Yevdokimov (Year 4) was awarded the Best and Fairest award for his fantastic sportsmanship and humility throughout the tournament. Well done boys. I would like to thank Mr Ben Woolacott for his assistance with this tournament.

Our most recent success occurred on Tuesday 4 September when 34 boys in 8 teams competed at the Toowoomba Primary Schools Teams Chess Championship. It was a massive day of competition where 500 competitors in 124 teams from 35 schools played seven rounds of chess. In a brilliant return to form, TGS Team 1 (Theo Yevdokimov, Oliver Clifford, Jett Heffernan and Charlie Meyer) put on a truly dominant display going undefeated in their first four rounds. Their strong performance continued throughout the afternoon and they finished comfortably in 1st place; returning the trophy to its rightful home at TGS after its brief holiday at Darling Heights State School. Team 2 (Karan Mohan, Henry Paton, William Dwan and George Clifford) also performed very strongly finishing in 4th place. Both teams will now represent the school at the Queensland State Championship which will be held in Brisbane on the weekend of 20/21 October.

Congratulations to all of the boys who attended the event and represented our school with humility and respect and thank you Mrs Karen Newton for her invaluable assistance in helping the boys at the event.

Hungry 4 Health Visitor As parents, we understand the necessity to fuel our bodies well. However, children can often find nutrition difficult to understand. On Tuesday 4 September, we welcomed Terri Hamilton, founder of Hungry 4 Health. Terri is a qualified and experienced dietitian / nutritionist and mother of two young boys who spoke to the boys about nutrition and fuelling their bodies for success. The interactive presentation to the boys covered a range of nutrition topics in the aim of informing and inspiring young children to make healthy choices. The boys enjoyed Terri’s presentation and walk away feeling empowered to fuel their bodies well to keep them concentrating in class and fast on the sporting fields.

Did you know?

Eating regularly assists in concentration and maintaining a healthy weight.

Most Australian children only consume half the recommended daily fruit intake.

Children who eat a healthy breakfast of whole grains, fruits and cereals are more likely to maintain healthy eating habits

Children should be eating at least two serves of fruits and five serves of vegetables each day

Fruit juice poppers contain on average 11 teaspoons of sugar – the daily recommended intake for children is 6 teaspoons!

Packing a healthy lunch box with limited processed foods and at least two serves of fruit will support your child to concentrate in class

less than 1 child in 5 eats enough vegetable

more than half of children aged between 9 and 13 fall short on their dietary calcium intake

all children consume far too much sodium salt

4 in every 5 children eat too much saturated fat, and

close to 20% of children aged between 6 and 11 consume more calories than they probably need.

TGS lunch box challenge Terri acknowledged that Australian school age children are only consuming half the daily recommended fruit intake. We challenge the boys to swap an item out of their lunch boxes for one additional piece of fruit. Try swapping a packet of biscuits, processed meats, or snacks high in salt for a second piece of fruit. In addition, try leaving the fruit juice popper at home and filling up a water bottle. Fuelling your child well for the day assists him in concentrating throughout his lessons and having energy to play at lunch time. Please assist us in packing a healthy lunch box.

Healthy Food Guide The Healthy Food Guide is a website with free access. This great website provides information to families regarding nutrition, ideas to swap out unhealthy foods, and great family recipes. It has been developed by dieticians and can be found at https://www.healthyfoodguide.com.au/.

Music News Musicians’ Cup Our annual Junior School Musicians’ Cup will be held in the Junior School Hall on Thursday 18 October, 2018 (Week 2, Term 4). The Musicians’ Cup is an adjudicated event held with high regard within our Junior School. All instrumental students, from Years 4 to 6, with a minimum of 18 months tuition on their instrument, are welcome to nominate to compete in the Cup. Boys competing should be performing at a AMEB Grade 1 standard as a minimum. A note with all details and nomination form was sent home last week. Nomination forms were originally due back by Tuesday 11 September, however with the busyness of week 7 and 8, we have extended this due date to Friday 14 September. Sometimes when lessons are rescheduled in a busy term it is not always possible to obtain the Tutor’s signature on the nomination form - If your son is not able to submit his form by Friday, we encourage him to come and speak to us, or email, to ensure that he can be included. We have an early due date for these forms to ensure that boys have chosen a piece and are on their way towards polishing it for this prestigious event.

Junior School Supporters’ Group Well another term is over and done with! Almost but not quite. This Saturday is the last home game for GPS Rugby and Basketball. Our boys are up against Gregory Terrace and all of the game times can be found on the TGS app under the individual sport. You might need to update your settings as it will be under Senior School information. The atmosphere is amazing and it’s fantastic to see the Junior boys there starting to learn the war cries. If you haven’t been to a home game then come along, you won’t regret it. Our end of term Meal Deal will be on Wednesday 19 September, the second last day of term. The last day of term is the Year 6 fundraiser day and we wish the boys the best of luck in their efforts. Thank you to Rachael Rowe for convening our Swimming Carnival Bake Sale. A huge thank you to everyone who has donated goods or their time throughout the year! We really couldn’t do what we do without the ongoing support of the parent body. Enjoy the break and if you are travelling, stay safe. Bliss Bierhoff Junior Supporters Group President

After School Care What we have done this past fortnight The boys have been participating in a range of fun and exciting activities. As a group we have been involved in a few different conversations which lead to some fun craft activities. One of our discussions was based around road safety week, as a group we made our own road safety display of the roads around the school. Another display the boys made was for Child Protection Week, each of the boys all traced around their hand and on each finger wrote someone they feel safe with/can talk to if they are in trouble. As it is not as cold and dark outside the boys are able to play outside for longer, which they are loving. The most popular indoor games this past fortnight have been Twister and colouring in.

What we have planned for the next week Next week we are going to be to doing some fun activities leading up the school holidays.. These activities include but are not limited to making our own giant board games as well as doing some fun experiments. We are even having an end of term party on the last Wednesday of term, this will involve lots of fun games and yummy food!
