Principal’s Message
February has been a busy month here at Edith Cavell school. We welcomed many new families that registered their children for Junior Kindergarten in September 2017. Mrs. Blackburn lead our choir singing the National Anthem at the Ice Dogs Game. We cele-brated the 100th day of school. Grades 1 and 2 classes received Mindfulness training learning skills to help them calm down in stressful situations. Mr. de Waard and Mme Maracle coached the intermediate boys’ and girls’ basketball teams and competed in the DSBN tournament. Thank you to both coaches for giving up of your own time to help our intermediate students learn the sport of basketball. The grades 4 to 8 stu-dents participated in the My Life Online workshop; learning skills to keep them safe while being on the Internet. The Grades 4&5 students travelled to the St.Catharines Library to spend the day researching articles and archives for information related to their Heritage Fair topic. The grades 5-8 students travelled to the Meridan Centre to watch the Scotties Curling Tournament. The Carousel Players theatre group came and performed to the grades 5-8 students on a topic of Social Justice. The play was spon-sored by the Brock University Faculty of Education memorial group.
Parking: Some of the signs have changed regarding the parking at school. The west parking lot, close to Pelham street is now a staff only parking lot. The signs indicate that only staff vehicles should be parked there. Please do not use this parking lot for dropping or picking up your children. This is because there is a walkway that runs across the top of the parking lot that students use to cross from the sidewalk to the school. For the safety of students, please do not use this parking lot. The east parking lot is our public parking lot. Please use this parking lot for dropping off or picking up. There is also a new handicapped parking space directly in front of the school. This space should only be used for dropping off or picking up students with special needs.
We all want the children of Edith Cavell to be safe. Thank you for following these new parking measures to ensure the continued safety of the students.
School Council: Please plan to attend the School Council meeting on Tuesday, April 25 at 6pm. There will be pizza, pop, juice and water available for dinner. Babysitting for young children will also be offered. We are looking for new members from the par-ents of the Edith Cavell community. All are welcome to come out to this meeting and learn more about what we are doing at Edith Cavell School.
Email: Please contact the school to ensure we have your email address. We have be-gun to send out information electronically to email addresses. If you have not been receiving any emails from the school in the past month, we probably don’t have your email address on file. We are looking to reduce our paper use and will be sending in-formation to families via email.

LATE ARRIVALS
Parents, please remember to call
the school if your child will be ar-
riving late. We have noticed that the number
of students arriving late has increased con-
siderably. Late arrivals cause unnecessary
interruptions to classroom instruction and
learning. Students are expected to arrive at
school on time . We suggest at least five min-
utes before bell time, which is at 8:50am.
Learning time starts promptly at 9am.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
If you or someone you know missed
our Kindergarten Open House in
February, you can still come in and register
your child. Please bring with you your child’s
Birth Certificate and Immunization Record to
register your child.
PHONE NUMBER & ADDRESS UPDATES
In case of an emergency, it’s important that
the school have current and updated contact
information (working telephone numbers) to
reach you at all times during the day. If your
phone number or address have changed,
please contact the office as soon as possible
to update your information. This is also im-
portant if your child becomes ill at school, is
injured and requires medical treatment or
in the event of weather related school clo-
sures .
ARIIVAL & DISMISSAL
Parents and guardians are reminded that they
should remain outdoors when dropping
off/picking up their child(ren). Please respect
dismissal procedures and wait for your child
at their exit door. If your child has an ap-
pointment and needs to be signed out early,
please make a note in your child’s agenda or
contact the office first thing in the morning
to avoid end of day interruptions. It is under-
standable that sometimes emergencies hap-
pen and students must be dismissed early.
Please try to avoid interrupting valuable
classroom instruction at the end of the day by
waiting until 3:15 dismissal. We appreciate
your support and understanding with this
matter.
In February our school participated
in the MS Read-a-Thon challenge.
Through reading, our students
helped those living with MS. We
raised $145.00.
All proceeds from the MS Read-A-thon will help
fund vital services and programs for people with
MS as well as research into the cause, treatment
and cure. Thank you for your support with this
valuable program!
There will not be any school for the week of March 13 - 17th for all
DSBN students .
We hope you enjoy your time off with your
friends and family.

Our Week of Change kicks off March 31, 2017.
Niagara Dental Health
Are you an adult in Niagara who is experiencing problems or barriers to accessing dental care? The Niagara Dental Health Coalition has launched a short survey to learn more about these barriers and their impacts. Please take a moment to complete the sur-
vey at: http://niagaradentalhealthcoalition.weebly.com/ The survey is open until March 10, 2017.
Intermediate Boy’s
Basketball The senior boy’s basket-
ball team had a very successful season. The
squad finished third in their seven-team loop during league play, earning a post-
season spot as a result. They recorded a convincing win in the first round of the
play-offs before falling to Woodland in the semi-finals. Following this, the
Knight’s gained a berth to the DSBN tour-nament at Brock University. The team
competed with distinction at this compe-
tition, losing a very tight early-round game to eventual “C’ division champions
Oakridge (19-18).
Over the campaign the boys displayed tremendous dedication, sportsmanship,
and team spirit, and they are to be com-mended for all that they accomplished.
On behalf of the team, I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to the
parents, guardians, family members, and school staff who drove and/or supported
these student-athletes throughout the lengthy (but highly enjoyable) season.
Thank you from Mr. de Waard
Team Members: Adam K., Lucas B., Mason C., Marcus M.,
Marques C., Cory P., Josh L., Brad S, Brad H., Jordan C., Ethan R., & Ethan H.

Fruits and veggies are not only absolutely delicious but
they are nature’s fast food! Ready to eat and most
come in their own “to-go” packages, produce makes
the perfect snack for kids to grab and go. They need
minimal to no preparation and buying ones in season
means you can save some money and shop smarter.
Think you can’t get much produce on a tight budget? Here are some tips to make shopping for
produce more easy and affordable:
Don’t shop when you’re hungry and carry a list. You’ll be more likely to stick to your
budget and nutritious food choices.
Look for washed and bagged salads, baby carrots, celery hearts, broccoli and cauliflower
crowns, cherry tomatoes, and shredded cabbage in your grocery store.
Buy fresh produce, like peaches or bananas, in varying degrees of ripeness to allow for
some ripening towards the end of the week.
Canned and frozen vegetables can be convenient choices.
Spend most of your time in the produce, bread, meat and dairy sections.
Use store flyers to help you find specials.

Immunizations
Immunization begins in early infancy and continues throughout life. Your child will receive the
majority of his or her immunizations between the ages of two months and six years of age.
Please take a moment to check your child’s Immunization Record (yellow card) to be sure his or
her immunizations are up-to-date. Immunizations work best when given on time.
For more information on childhood immunization, including the immunization schedule, speak
with your doctor or visit www.health.gov.on.ca.
If you have further questions, please call the Vaccine Preventable Disease Program at Niagara
Region Public Health at 905-688-8248 or 1-888-505-6074 ext. 7425 to speak to a public health
nurse.
