Last week the Year 9 students spent three days hiking 33km from Apollo Bay to Cape Otway. We were rained on during the first night, then hailed on as they walked along the beach on Wednesday morning. The first day’s walking was along beaches and over headlands, and some students enjoyed the wet feet and rock pools. At our second night’s camp in the Otway Ranges, koala spotting occupied some time, along with a taxing Mr Ridley brain teaser. The screams of koalas after dark were not conducive to quality sleep.

Day 2 was mostly in forest, although some students walked down to an isolated beach, and then finished at beautiful Blanket Bay. This was a lovely campsite, a broad beach and a rocky waterfall for soldier games and a koala just three metres away. On our last morning we rose early to a glowing red sky. There was a nasty set of steps midway along the walk, and several students were cheered by their first sight of the lighthouse. However, like an optical illusion, it didn’t seem to get any closer, despite lots of clifftop and sand dune walking. However, as students saw the road and heard the tourist vehicles and voices, they knew that junk food and a good rest was not far away. - Chloe, Jai, Xavier, Tayla

Year 9 - The Challenge

Three Day Challenge Hike Dry weather welcomed the Year 9 students into Apollo Bay to begin their Challenge hiking ad-venture along the Great Ocean Walk. Students displayed respon-sibility by being well pre-pared, on time and with all food and gear ready. The first day is always the greatest physical chal-lenge with students adapting to the weight of their packs and distance required to get to base camp. - Mrs Ferry

Overnight Challenge With plenty of planned challenge experiences coming up for Year 9’s, this first overnight camp was an opportunity for each student to be able to practise their Trangia skills, wear in their new shoes and adjust the weight of their pack. We were blessed with perfect hiking conditions as we explored the Sassafras forest. Congratulations to the students who all stepped up to their first challenge.

After School Homework Club A number of students have elected to stay after school for some extra help from teachers with maths and science. Homework club is really beneficial to me as it means I can get my home-work done properly and on time with the help of teachers. - Tom, Year 10
