La Florida históricamente es uno de los destinos más visitados en los Estados Unidos, desde los albores del siglo XVIII donde aventureros euro-
peos llegaban en busca de conquistar tierras, hasta las cientos de miles de familias que llegan en pleno siglo XXI buscando experiencias de viaje con parques, playas, gastronomía y cultura.
La única zona tropical de los Estados Unidos, el resabio de Caribe que limita en sus aguas con Cuba y con México es hoy en día, un nodo turístico muy importante a nivel internacional.
En cada ciudad, en cada playa y en cada región del estado se pueden aquilatar recuerdos entre parques de diversiones, museos, caminatas entre naranjos o estadios de fútbol americano y béisbol.
Su cercanía con América Latina es parte de su his-toria, decenas de comunidades cubanas, colombianas, haitianas, mexicanas, salvadoreñas, ecuatorianas, pe-ruanas, entre otras, le han dado una nueva identidad muy latinoamericana.
En esta edición, llevamos a ustedes un poco de lo mucho que se puede experimentar y vivir en la Florida, desde las compras hasta el entretenimiento gratuito, desde la ajetreada vida nocturna en Miami hasta un relajado atardecer en Clearwater.
Para los más pequeños este lugar está lleno de magia e ilusión, los diferentes parques temáticos que se mantienen en constante crecimiento representan los sueño de millones de niños alrededor del mundo.
Es un buen tiempo para dejarse encantar por la Florida.

Historically, Florida has been a very popular tourist destina-tion. Since the 18th century, European explorers came look-ing to conquer new land; nowadays, thousands of families come looking for new travel experiences at parks, beaches, restaurants and museums.
The only tropical region in the U.S., bathed in Caribbean waters and close to Cuba and Mexico, it is a very important modern tourist hub.
Each city and beach in the region can be a place to cre-ate new memories of theme parks, museums, walks among the orange trees or visits to football and baseball stadiums.
It has also been historically held close ties with Latin America, as it is home to communities of Cubans, Colombians, Haitians, Mexicans, Salvadorians, Ecuadorians, Peruvians and others, which imbue the state with a very Latin identity.
In this issue, we bring you a little of what you can experience and discover in Florida, from shopping to free entertainment, from the noisy nightlife in Miami to the relaxing sunsets in Clearwater.
For children, a visit to the state will mean a trip full of magic and illusion, as its world-famous theme parks occupy the dreams of millions of children around the world.

EN FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA
Here are a few places, all within minutes and often within walking distance of downtown Fort Lauderdale, to grab a quiet moment.
From any point along Riverwalk, stretching about a mile along the north side of the New River, you can access the teeming pulse of the city.
Over the railroad tracks is Las Olas Riverfront, which the city hopes to revitalize, then the green swath that is Huizenga Park and a block away the Museum of Art. Past the Third Avenue Bridge you’ll find entry to the shopping and nightlife of Las Olas Boulevard, and a few hundred yards from the end of the path is the Stranahan House Museum, where much of Fort Lauderdale’s history begins.
All those attractions are worth experiencing. But just strolling the Riverwalk itself is a calming , cool diversion that won’t cost you a thing. Even surrounded by the city, this is a path to take time out, a place to hear the birds, or watch splashing fish.
ANNIE BECK PARKAnnie Beck is a ribbon of land tucked between Victoria Park Road and a finger canal, both lined with some of the city’s more historic – and expensive – homes.
Start just to the south at Victoria Park, with a gazebo and more
than an acre of green lawn with sun and shade. It’s a great place to launch a kayak to explore the latticework of nearby waterways.
Just across Northeast First Street is the adjoining Annie Beck Park, no more than a dozen feet wide in most places, almost a tunnel through a canopy of gumbo limbos, live oaks and silver trumpets, a cool escape even in the summer months.
HUGH TAYLOR BIRCH STATE PARK Hugh Taylor Birch didn’t like crowds. Thanks to him, you can escape them too.
This Chicago lawyer for Standard Oil was getting away from the crowds at the 1892 World’s Fair when he traveled by rail to the end of the line in Titusville, then rented a sailboat to take farther down the Atlantic Coast.
When a storm forced him to shore near here, he was smitten by the area’s rawness, beauty – and isolation.
Birch bought three miles of barrier island between what is now the Intracoastal Waterway and Fort Lauderdale Beach in 1893 for less than $1 per acre and built a winter homestead. Much later, hoping to preserve a quiet spot amid growing development, Birch deeded his getaway to the public.

Hay algunos lugares, todos a minutos del Down-town de Fort Lauderdale, donde encontrarás momentos de tranquilidad.
Desde cualquier punto en el Riverwalk, que se alarga casi una milla por el lado norte del New River, hay una entrada al ajetreado ritmo de la ciudad.
Después de los rieles de tren, está Las Olas River-front, seguido de una franja verde, el Parque Huizenga, y una cuadra más allá se encuentra el Museo de Arte. En seguida del puente de la Tercera Avenida, hay una entrada a Las Olas Boulevard, donde se siente el ambiente alegre de la vida nocturna, además de innumerables sitios para hacer compras. Poco antes de que concluya el camino está el Museo de la Casa Stranahan, donde comienza gran parte de la historia de Fort Lauderdale.
Todos estos sitios vale la pena visitarlos, aunque sólo transitar por el Riverwalk es una distracción muy relajante que no cuesta ni un centavo. Aún rodeado por la ciudad, éste es un recorrido que permite tomar un descanso, un lugar para escuchar el canto de los pájaros o ver saltar a los peces.
PARQUE ANNIE BECKAnnie Beck es una franja de tierra metida entre la ca-rretera Victoria Park (Victoria Park Road) y un delgado canal, ambos bordeados por algunas de las casas más históricas –y caras– de la ciudad.
Comienza en el sur de Victoria Park, donde hay una plazoleta y más de un acre de césped verde con sol y sombra. Es un lugar perfecto para subir en kayak y explorar el entramado de los canales cercanos.
Después de pasar Northeast First Street, está el Parque Annie Beck, que en muchas partes es bastante angosto y casi tiene forma de túnel, gracias al toldo que forman los coloridos árboles del área. Esta particularidad lo convierte en un lugar fresco, incluso en los meses de verano.
PARQUE ESTATAL HUGH TAYLOR BIRCH A Hugh Taylor Birch no le gustaban las multitudes. Gracias a él, hoy quien sea puede evitarlas.
Este abogado de la petrolera Standard Oil, oriundo de Chicago, trataba de alejarse de las muchedumbres de la Feria Mundial de 1892, cuando se embarcó en un viaje por tren hasta llegar al final de la línea en Titusville, donde alquiló un velero para ir aún más lejos por la costa del Atlántico.
Entonces, mientras navegaba, una tormenta lo obligó a anclar cerca del actual Fort Lauderdale, quedó completamente enamorado de la pureza, belleza y aislamiento que le ofrecía este lugar.
En 1893, Birch compró por menos de un dólar por acre tres millas de isla, entre lo que es hoy el Wa-terway Intracoastal y Fort Lauderdale Beach, y construyó una hacienda para pasar el invierno. Años después, con la esperanza de salvar un espacio tran-quilo a medida que aumentaba el casco urbano, Birch transfirió su refugio para el uso público, convirtiendo su propio lugar de retiro en refrescante sitio para calmar el estrés de la ciudad y el bullicio de las multitudes.

1. PINELLAS COUNTY HERITAGE VILLAGEGo back in time at Pinellas County Heritage Village in Largo, an indoor-outdoor living history museum where admission is always free (donations welcome).
2. GLAZER CHILDREN'S MUSEUMOn the first Tuesday of every month, the Glazer Children's Museum in downtown Tampa offers free admission to all guests from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.
3. ST. PETERSBURG COLLEGE PLANETARIUMThe St. Petersburg College Planetarium will have you seeing stars, with public shows by resident astronomer Dr. Craig Joseph most Fridays at 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m.
4. LARGO CENTRAL RAILROAD All aboard Largo Central Railroad’s miniature train, which offers free rides (donations accepted) on the first full weekend of each month. The 1.2-mile track winds through Largo's Central Park—another great free attraction.
5. FLORIDA BOTANICAL GARDENSPack a picnic and spend an afternoon at Florida Botanical Gardens in Largo, which features 30 acres of flora and an interactive children's trail.
6. SUNSETS AT PIER 60In Clearwater Beach, don't miss Sunsets at Pier 60, a free nightly celebra-tion that includes live entertainment, street performers, vendors and more.
7. TAMPA ELECTRIC MANATEE VIEWING CENTErWhen the weather turns cold, manatees flock to the Tampa Electric Manatee Viewing Center in Apollo Beach—and so should you, if you'd like to catch a glimpse of these amazing creatures. Seeing manatees is one of the best free things to do in Tampa.

Mucho antes de que hubiera megaparques temáticos, las atracciones de la Florida giraban mayormente alrededor de la belleza exótica
del estado, la naturaleza y sus cristalinos manantiales.Aunque no todas las atracciones han sobrevivido
(Cypress Gardens, The Atomic Tunnel, and Six Gun Te-rritory, entre otras), muchas de ellas han perdurado hasta el siglo XXI, porque recuerdan a los visitantes que a veces lo sencillo es lo mejor.
Aquí 6 atracciones de la Florida, que fueron parte del pasado del estado, que han llegado hasta el presente y que, con suerte, perdurarán mucho tiempo más.
1. SILVER SPRINGS (1888)En la década de los ochenta del siglo XIX, un señor llamado Hullam Jones colocó una hoja de vidrio en el fondo de una embarcación de remo y empezó a cobrar cinco centavos por cabeza para transportar a los pasajeros por las cristalinas aguas de Silver Springs.
Así nació la primera atracción turística en la Florida.En 2013, Silver Springs Nature se convirtió en un
parque estatal que conservó la esencia de este antiguo encanto floridano. A la fecha, los visitantes todavía pueden abordar las famosas embarcaciones con fondo de vidrio y observar el cristalino mundo subacuático, antes de navegar río abajo para adentrarse en los bosques circundantes.

2. BOK TOWER (1929)En evocación del consejo de su abuela de “haz el mundo un lugar un poquito mejor o más bello por haber vivido en él”, el inmigrante holandés Edward Bok y su esposa, Mary Louise, usaron parte de su fortuna (parte de ella proveniente de su profesión como editor de la revista Ladies Home Journal) para crear uno de los lugares más serenos y tranquilos de la Florida.
Aquí se puede pasear por senderos bordeados de robles, palmeras sabal, magnolias y miles de flores; observar más de 100 especies de aves o escuchar una presentación especial de la orquesta. Hay muchas razones para enamorarse de este pacífico oasis. Aun mejor, uno comprende cómo el mundo se convirtió en un lugar más bello gracias a la existencia de Edward Bok.
3. MONKEY JUNGLE (1933)Aunque el eslogan “Donde los humanos están en jaulas y los monos sueltos” puede sonar un poco áspero según los estándares de hoy en día, en la década de los 30 era una manera astuta de anunciarles a los turistas que iban a vivir una experiencia única en Monkey Jungle.
Las atracciones en este hábitat protegido incluyen espectáculos y, a veces, encuentros más cercanos en la piscina Wild Monkey, en el bosque Cameroon Gorilla, una selva amazónica, y en Wings of Love y Hangin’ with the Orangs.

4. JUNGLE ISLAND (1936 ANTIGUAMENTE PARROT JUNGLE)Ya para 1936, Miami había comenzado a encontrar su propia identidad. Además del sol y la arena de South Beach, los empresarios comenzaron a darse cuenta de que sus pantanos intactos y los bosques alrededor de la ciudad formaban parte del encanto.
La idea original de los Scherrs, hace tantos años atrás, todavía es la base de esta atracción. Los visitantes aún pueden observar los coloridos loros y los guacamayos (algunos de los cuales participan en los espectáculos de pájaros), así como los icónicos flamencos color rosa de Miami, serpientes, buitres, cóndores, caimanes, canguros, tigres y orangutanes. Hay hasta fiestas de pijama de una noche e interacción con los animales, todo esto con la cosmopolita Miami de telón de fondo.
5. MIAMI SEAQUARIUM (1955)La década de los 50 debe de haber sido fantástica en Miami. Una era cuando la ciudad se convirtió en un refugio para los jet setters y un lugar donde el diseño posmoderno comenzó a cambiar el perfil urbano. En Virginia Key, en la bahía de Biscayne, el futurista Aquadome Schel Dorado marcó la llegada del Miami Seaquarium.
En aquel entonces, era la mayor atracción de vida marina del mundo, y probablemente la más popular. No sólo era una de los pocos sitios temáticos de la Florida, sino que, en la década de los 60, el parque recibió un gran impulso al convertirse en una de las locaciones principales donde filmaban el exitoso programa de televisión Flipper.
6. CITRUS TOWER (1956)Cuando la icónica torre Citrus abrió en las afueras de Orlando, su propósito era mostrar y celebrar la industria cítrica que experimentaba en aquel entonces un gran crecimiento en el centro de la Florida, cuyas ondulantes lomas estaban sembradas de naranjales interminables salpicadas por lagos de agua dulce.
Aunque la vista que se observa desde el punto de observación más alto de la Florida no es nada impresio-nante, al visitarlo se ve un ejemplo sobresaliente, un clásico, de la historia de la Florida.
Classic Old Florida attractions
Long before there were super-sized theme parks, Florida attractions were based largely on the state’s exotic natural beauty, wildlife and crystal clear springs.
While not every attraction has survived so far (Cypress Gardens, The Atomic Tunnel, and Six Gun Territory among them), several have made their way into the 21st Century by reminding guests that sometimes simple pleasures are the best.
Here are 10 old Florida attractions that were part of the state’s past, made it to the present and, hopefully, we’ll enjoy well into the future.
SILVER SPRINGS (1888)In the 1880s, a man named Hullam Jones put a pane of glass in the bottom of a rowboat and charged passengers five cents apiece to ferry them above the clear waters of Silver Springs.
Florida had its first tourist attraction.In 2013, Silver Springs became a state park that retained
the essence of this old Floridian attraction. To this day, visitors can still board the famous glass-bottom boats at the Silver Springs Nature Theme Park and observe the crystal-clear world below before sailing downriver and into the surround-ing woodlands.
BOK TOWER (1929)Recalling his grandmother’s admonition to “Make the world a bit better or more beautiful because you have lived in it,” Dutch immigrant Edward Bok and his wife, Mary Louise, used part of their fortune (some from his role as editor of the Ladies Home Journal) to create one of the most serene and peaceful places in Florida.
Come here and stroll paths lined by live oaks, sabal palms, magnolias, and thousands of flowers, search for more than 100 bird species, or visit during a special orchestral performance and you’ll find more reasons to fall in love with this oasis of calm. Even better, you’ll see how the world became more beautiful because Edward Bok lived in it.
MONKEY JUNGLE (1933)Although the tagline “Where humans are caged and monkeys run wild” may seem a bit grating by today’s standards, in the advertising standards of the 1930s it was a clever way
to let tourists know they were in for a unique experience at Monkey Jungle.
Among the experiences within the protected habitat are shows and sometimes even closer encounters at the Wild Monkey Swimming Pool, the Cameroon Gorilla Forest, the Amazonian Rain Forest, Wings of Love, and Hangin’ with the Orangs.
JUNGLE ISLAND (1936 - FORMERLY PARROT JUNGLE)By 1936, Miami was finding its identity. In addition to the sun and sand of South Beach, entrepreneurs started to recognize the city’s appeal was also in the untouched swamps and woods that bordered the city.
What the Scherrs began those many years ago is still the basis for this zoological attraction. Guests still see colorful parrots and macaws (some of which perform in bird shows) as well as Miami’s iconic pink flamingoes along with snakes, vultures, condors, alligators, kangaroos, tigers, and orangutans. There are even overnight slumber parties and animal interac-tions – all within sight of cosmopolitan Miami.
MIAMI SEAQUARIUM (1955)The 1950s must have been great in Miami as the city became a haven for jet-setters and a place where post-modern design was changing the skyline. Over on Virginia Key in Biscayne Bay, the futuristic Golden Aquadome marked the arrival of the Miami Seaquarium.
At the time, this was the world’s largest marine life attraction – and possibly the most popular. Not only was it one of Florida’s few themed attractions, in the 1960s the park got a big boost by being one of the prime shooting locations for the hit TV show ‘Flipper’.
CITRUS TOWER (1956)When the iconic Citrus tower opened on the outskirts of Orlando, it was to showcase and celebrate Central Florida’s sprawling citrus industry, seen in rolling hills of endless groves speckled with freshwater lakes.
Although the views from Florida’s highest observation point may not be awe-inspiring , if you visit you’ll still see a towering example of Old Florida history.

El centro comercial más conocido de Naples, Fifth Avenue South no es la única opción para ir de compras. No dejes de incluir los siguientes lu-
gares en tu itinerario si las tiendas son una actividad terapéutica para ti.
1. Third Street SouthUna popular área a pocas cuadras del famoso Fifth Street South. Cuenta con boutiques, salones y muchos restaurantes; cuando a mi esposo y a mí nos dio hambre, nos costó trabajo escoger entre las muchas tentadoras opciones. Bryan y Evan de Miami, nuestros compañeros de hotel, el Bayfront Inn 5th Ave., nos dijeron que Cam-piello valía la pena, y así fue. La comida, con vino, nos salió en 50 dólares. Preparan las pastas frescas todos los días y cuando no pude decidir qué ordenar, el mesero le pidió al chef que me prepara una pasta primavera que no estaba en el menú. 3. The Village en la bahía Venetian No en balde se llama Nápoles. Esta área comercial de inspiración italiana en Naples cuenta con boutiques de lujo, galerías y restaurantes con una serena vista al mar. Sentarse a tomar un cappuccino en Villaggio Café resulta un descanso de precio módico, y después puedes hacer una visita a A Horse of a Different Color para ojear su pintoresca mercancía de decoración del hogar. Los horarios durante el verano pueden ser impredecibles de modo que llama antes si deseas visitar alguna tienda en particular; muchas cierran los domingos.

Last week, I gave you some pointers for navigating Naples' best-known shopping district, Fifth Avenue South. But that street isn't the only game in town for geat Naples shopping. If you're looking for retail therapy beyond Fifth Avenue South, put these stops on your itinerary.
1. Third Street SouthSeveral blocks from the famed Fifth Street South is another popular byway. You'll find boutiques, salons and plenty of restaurants; when Hubby and I got hungry, we had a hard time deciding between several alluring options. We took the advice of our fellow guests at Bayfront Inn 5th Ave., Bryan and Evan of Miami. They said Campiello was worth the splurge, and they were right. Dinner for Hubby and me, including wine, came to about $50. The pasta is made fresh daily, and when I couldn't decide what to order, my server had the chef whip up a pasta primavera that wasn't on the menu. Take advantage of the specials and Sunday family-style suppers, and avoid the dinner rush.
2. Las tiendas alrededor de la bahía PelicanSome malls are jam-packed with mediocre stores. Not this place. It houses several dozen carefully selected shops for those with discriminat-ing taste. Hermes. Gucci. Lacoste. Apple. And the anchor? Nordstrom, of course. Whether you're a big spender or just window shopping in Naples, you'll enjoy strolling through the well-organized thoroughfares.
3. The Village on Venetian Bay They don't call it Naples for nuthin'. This Italian-inspired Naples shopping enclave features high-end boutiques, galleries and restaurants with serene waterfront views. For an affordable afternoon, grab a cappuccino from Villaggio Cafe, then browse the colorful home decor items at A Horse of a Different Color. Summer hours are hit-or-miss, so if you have your heart set on a particular store, call ahead; many stores are closed Sundays.
4. Naples Zoo at Caribbean GardensStay with me here. General admission is $19.95 for adults and $12.95 for kids. But you can browse the gift shop for free. Check out the books, T-shirts, stuffed animals and other souvenirs. You can even see a few reptiles in their aquariums.

Kissimmee es una tierra de lagos, pantanos de cipreses y enormes praderas húmedas, y no ha cambiado mucho en los últimos cien años. Aún
puedes ver lagartos, águilas calvas, linces y, si te interesa la pesca, enormes róbalos con tamaño de trofeo.
En el siglo XIX los principales métodos de transpor-tación eran los caballos y las canoas. Afortunadamente, los viajeros de hoy en día pueden recorrer en un bote de aire la distancia que antes tomaba una semana en tan sólo 45 minutos.
Nadie sabe con certeza a quién se le ocurrió montar un enorme ventilador en la parte posterior de un bote de pesca, pero sin esta obra maestra del ingenio estadounidense, pocas personas tendrían la oportunidad de descubrir la Verdadera Florida.
CENTRAL DE BOTES DE AIREBoggy Creek Airboat Rides comenzó a ofrecer reco-rridos en botes de aire en 1994. No one knows for sure who first thought of mounting an oversized fan on the back of a flat-bottomed fishing boat, but without this masterpiece of American ingenuity, few people would be able to experience the Real Florida.
AIRBOAT CENTRALThe folks at Boggy Creek Airboat Rides started taking visitors for airboat rides back in 1994. They started off with a six-seater, but soon found the demand so great that they bought bigger boats that can accommodate up to 17 passengers.Find Boggy Creek Airboat Rides at Southport Park where, in 1872, President Chester A. Arthur and some friends held a ribbon-cutting ceremony before they hopped aboard one of the first steamers to travel down the Kissimmee River.Camping is available at this 25-acre park that serves as the gateway to the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes. This is a great place to kick back and relax, but forget about sleeping in; if the fishermen don’t wake you, the wild turkeys will.
BOATING & FISHING LAKE TOHOAn Orlando vacation can be hectic at times, so plan for a relaxed day just for you out on the lake. Big Toho Marina, located at the north end of the lake in historic downtown Kissimmee, rents everything from fishing skiffs to ski boats.
In 2001, this 22,000-acre lake was the site of pro-fessional bass-fishing history when professional angler Dean Rojas shattered all tournament records when he caught five fish totaling 45 pounds, 2 ounces – in one day. For baseball fans, that’s like hitting four home runs in one game. Rojas took home a check for $110,000, not bad for a day’s fishing.BASS, the world’s top bass-fishing tour, recently moved its headquarters to nearby Celebration, just a short drive to what many would argue is the world’s top bass-fishing lake. But you don’t have to be a professional fisherman to pull a 10-pounder out of Big Lake Toho. The marina has guides lined up and ready to go.
Try to get there before the sun comes up so you can get the marina’s famous “Big Breakfast.” But it’s okay if you miss it, as the cheeseburgers at lunchtime are nothing short of paradise.
FOREVER FLORIDAThe area has more to offer than just lakes and swamps. Outside of St. Cloud, you will find Forever Florida, a 4,700-acre conservation area that’s also a working cattle ranch. Explore this unspoiled wilderness by horse or open-air coach.All that action works up quite an appetite, so drop by Cypress Restaurant and get some gator nuggets and fried catfish. Once you’ve eaten your fill, pitch your tent at one of Forever Florida’s campground sites. Don’t even think about not spending the night; you’ll need a couple of days, maybe even a week, to see it all. And then there’s no doubt you’ll be coming back for more.

Desde México operan de forma directa Aeroméxico, Interjet y Volaris hacia la Florida; también American Airlines y Jet Blue y con escalas, además, prácticamente el resto de las aerolíneas estadounidenses.
Ahora bien, la conectividad por carretera y ferroviaria también es completa e integral, además de eficiente. El estado entero se puede recorrer en automóvil, para ello es conveniente alquilar automóviles con empresas experimentadas, como Hertz. También hay familias que deciden emprender el viaje por carretera desde la frontera mexicana, cruzando por Texas, Louisiana y Alamaba, lo que representa una experiencia de viaje distinta.

The U.S. airports with the greatest number of flights to and from Mexico are Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, regional hubs that provide easy access to the most interesting attractions in Florida.
However, there are other airports offering a variety of flights both within the U.S. as well as to Europe. These airports are in Tampa. Jacksonville, St. Petersburg, Panama City and Tallahassee.
Mexican airlines with direct flights to Florida are Aeromexico, Interjet and Volaris. American Airlines and Jet Blue also offer nonstop flights, while most other U.S. airlines have layover options.
The state’s railways and highways are also important and efficient. You drive across the entire state, so it’s a good idea to rent a car from a reputable agency, such as Hertz. Some families also drive all the way from the Mexican border, driving across Texas, Louisiana and Alabama before reaching Florida, which is a different way to travel.
Amtrak connects Florida to the rest of the country. There are a different service classes, from economy to full service. It can be a good option to travel to or from Florida.
