    Why Bullies Succeed

Halloween is a day of make believe and scary images. Everyone knows its a spoof and thatits just for fun. However, there are people who make scary times an everyday event.Theyre not ghoulies or ghosties but real life bullies.

We havent much problem with bullying in our school but in other locations it has lead totragic consequences. One school in the news lately has suffered four suicides by childrenwho have been literally been harassed and bullied to death. How does this kind of thing hap-

pen in a society that is so well informed and educated? The theories about children as bullies are numerous but I suspect that the real source of theirpower is outside their own personal aggression. As part of a close-knit group of people, wecan see every day when someone is being singled out for punishment. We see it, it makes uscringe but we do little or nothing to intervene. Why?

There are two major reasons that are as true for children as for adults. First, the unwrittenlaw that says never tell, never rat out your colleagues or your peers to those in higher au-thority. The second is fear; the real possibility of retaliation combined with the belief thateven your friends wont have the nerve to stand up for you. These two factors combine toallow bullies to succeed because we let them intimidate us. It worked for the Mafia and itworks just as well for children.

To combat this difficult impasse we try to provide safe means for children to get the mes-

sage out to someone who has the power to protect victims. Obviously, this doesnt alwayswork. Too often the message fails to be delivered or is misinterpreted. Once or twicemissed, the opportunity to change events may not come again. Both victims and passiveobservers become isolated and feel powerless. The heroes in the movies are the ones whosesense of righteousness is so strong that they eventually step up and give the bully a beating, giving that person a taste of their own ugliness. Often this only happens in fiction. In reallife youre more likely to just keep your head down long enough to get out of school, getanother job or just move away. And thats how bullies keep winning.

The only way to defeat bullies is to take responsibility and act as a group to stand againstthem in the first place. The longer they have power, the harder they are to defeat. Yes, itsthe responsibility of those with authority to be watchful and protective but, foremost, itsnecessary that the whole peer group have a set of standards that they will stand up for.Thats a lot to ask of children but if you dont act then you share a degree of complicity in

the crime. The adults responsibility is to be aware and listen and get involved immediately. This effectively makes the adults de facto members of the group. However, those who haveauthority must be seen to act quickly or they lose respect. If one person of authority doesntrespond then find another.

Bullies succeed because they are tolerated and their viciousness is dismissed. We must havezero tolerance of bullies in our schools and homes, in the work place and in government. We defeat them by working together and taking responsibility. JK

    What a Year! (2010)

this spring and summerthe hills were so greenas to rival Ireland`s landscape.

the abundance of color and lifetook our breath away .the responsible abundance of rainmade us wonderIf there was to be a time

to plant and seed, let alone harvest .

now, the late autumn-sunshineand unexpected warmthhave leached the color away, the hills standing like sand-sculpturesamong stubble-fields of dusty gold.

i find myselfliking the honestyof this barren-ness,this bare-nessas much as the lushness

just another face of natureteaching us about ourselves
