Freedom of the Press and Information

The United Nations General Assembly declared May 3rd as World Press Freedom Day to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression enshrined under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

More than 330 journalists and media workers have been assassinated internationally since the fall of 2002. They have died in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Mexico, Latin America, Georgia and in every world hot spot where war against injustice exists. They have been as-sassinated in the Netherlands, Russia, Japan and China. They have come from every part of the world to document and record what is really happening and they have died doing it. They weren’t out there to provide entertainment for us, they were there so we would see and not avoid the truth. We need people like this to keep our perspective accurate, to help us frame our judgement and assess our leaders. After all, in the end, we are the ones who are accountable for the actions of our communities and countries. Our leaders only go as far as we let them.

Democratic participation depends on people who are well-informed, this being a pre-condition for their effective monitoring and assessment of their leaders’ performance, as well as for their meaningful engagement in public debate and decision-making processes that impact their lives. Synopsis: Precious

Based on the novel Push by Sapphire, Pre-cious is a vibrant, honest and resoundingly hopeful film about the human capacity to grow and overcome. Set in Harlem in 1987, it is the story of Claireece “Precious” Jones, a 16 year old African-American girl born into a life that no one would want. Repeat-edly abused, she is pregnant for the second time by her absent father; at home she must wait hand and foot on her mother, a poison-ously angry woman who abuses her emotion-ally and physically. School is a place of chaos and Precious has reached the ninth grade with good marks and a big secret; she can neither read nor write.

Precious may sometimes be down but she is never out. Beneath her impassive expression is a watchful, curious young woman with an inchoate but unshakeable sense that other possibilities exist for her. Threatened with expulsion, Precious is offered the chance to transfer to an alternative school, Each One/Teach One. She doesn’t know the meaning of “alternative” but her instincts tell her that this is the chance she should grasp onto. In the literacy workshop taught by the patient but firm Ms. Rain, Precious begins a journey that will lead her from darkness, pain and powerlessness to light, love and self-determination. There is no blissful ending here but there is hope. A powerful but diffi-cult movie to watch and comprehend.

This film was an Official Selection at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and the winner of 3 awards in the 2009 Sundance Film Festi-val. It was produced in association with Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry. JK www.rottentomatoes.com

« pg.1 Freedom of Information for the public to hold government and other representatives accountable, and contributes to deter secretiveness, corrupt practices and wrong doing. Better infor-mation flows can also enhance govern-ment efficiency and responsiveness, while strengthening citizens’ trust in those who govern them. Freedom of in-formation is often associated with well-functioning markets and improvements in investment climates. For all the above reasons, it has been increasingly ac-knowledged as a key to democracy and socio-economic development.

Freedom of information may be inter-preted narrowly as the right to access information held by public bodies or, more broadly, as including access to and circulation of information held by other actors. It is intrinsically linked to the basic human right of freedom of expres-sion. Freedom of information is therefore also fundamentally connected to press freedom, representing a crucial element to enable media to strengthen democrati-zation, good governance and human de-velopment through its roles as a “watch-dog over the abuse of power (promoting accountability and transparency), as a civic forum for political debate (facilitating informed electoral choices), and as an agenda-setter for policymakers (strengthening government responsive-ness to social problems)”. In turn, com-plete realization of the right to know can-not take place without a free, independ-ent, plural, ethical and professional press.

At the same time it is incumbent on jour-nalists, commentators and the press not to manipulate the news but to provide it in an open and clear manner. However, every country, including Canada and the United States, has instances each day where reporting practices are biased and we, the recipients, are sceptical of the truth of what we are being told. Freedom of the press and information is still only as good as the trustworthiness of the hands into which it is put. We are the final arbiters of whether the press acts responsibly. JK
