Crisis Help is for Everyone
Southwest Crisis Services originally began 25 years ago with a mandate to offer help towomen in abusive relationships. Today their Crisis Line handles about 400 calls every year. However, now half of the calls are from men.
Last week was International Womens Week. Im pleased to celebrate this as its been andcontinues to be a long road for women to win the right to vote, to equal pay and equal treat-ment. One of the consequences of this struggle has been that men are also speaking outabout their own difficulties. The destabilization of families in our society has left many menas single parents who struggle to maintain contact with their children or raise them on theirown. Depression, isolation and anger are no longer issues that men are expected to deal withalone.
While the losing partner in an abusive relationship is most likely to be a woman that is notalways the case. There are many forms of abuse and no one should be such a victim. Aswell, there are increasing pressures from financial and job losses that leave many peoplelooking for guidance. The expectations of high achievement placed on all of us often cannotbe met. When that break in our existence occurs each person needs to know that he or shehas the right to support and assistance without guilt or loss of self respect. Men have finallycome into a time when that is possible for them without it being seen as a show of weak-ness. The fact that a large proportion of calls on the Crisis Line come from men indicatesthat they, too, are looking for answers to tough questions. People want alternatives now andare less likely to accept discouraging circumstances with resignation. Womens efforts foridentity and acceptance have helped to foster a climate of change in mens view of them-selves and to shake them loose from restrictive stereotypes.
International Mens Week doesnt arrive until November but we recognize that they deserveacknowledgement as well as women. Their issues are as significant and impactful. The crea-tion of a better society requires that everyones needs and contributions be viewed in anopen and constructive way. Social change seems to be the watch word for our lives thesedays. There is stress and tension but there is also opportunity for a better and healthier lifefor all members of our community. JK

Refinancing Your Mortgage Why, How and When?
You may be thinking about refinancing your mortgage. Mortgage rates are fairly low rightnow, so why not take advantage of them? But is that really a good idea? Lets take a closerlook at the why, how and when of mortgage refinancing.
Why refinance? Get a mortgage at a lower rate than your current mortgage.
Reduce payments restructuring your current mortgage and paying it off over a longerperiod can reduce your monthly cash flow obligations.
Consolidate debt by increasing your mortgage to obtain a lower interest rate than
conventional loans or credit cards, lower overall monthly payments, and lengthen therepayment period (mortgages can be amortized up to 25 years).
Improve cash flow to make monthly payments or balance your budget.
Equity take-out that can be used for anything you wish, from renovations to purchas-ing a car or a second property.
How to refinance? Penalties and pre-payment charges are almost a given when you refinance an existingmortgage before the end of your mortgage term (typically, five years). These chargesare meant to compensate the lender for lost income and other costs associated with theearly payout of your mortgage and they can offset any gains you might expect.
Minimize your refinancing penalty costs by prepaying as much as 20% of yourexisting mortgage (most lenders offer the option of making a lump sum contribution to themortgage usually from 15% to 20% -- without penalty) or, if you are within the first
three years of a five year term, you may be able to blend your existing mortgageinterest rate into a new, lower rate and extend your mortgage term that may provide aslight advantage or, at worst, break even.
When to refinance? If you intend to add a considerable amount to your refinanced mortgage, the lower ratewould apply to all new money and the extended term of your new loan meaning thatyour blended rate may be significantly lower.
Some lenders will reduce the penalty amount for current clients who refinance withthem and some offer promotions that assist with the payment of penalties when the mort-
gage is transferred to them from another lender.
This simple calculation will tell you if refinancing makes sense for you:1. Calculate the total projected interest costs for your existing mortgage.
2. Calculate the total projected interest costs for a refinanced mortgage, including allpenalty charges which are typically added to the mortgage.3. Choose the option with the lowest overall interest cost.
Is mortgage refinancing right for you? Ask your professional advisor and get the answerthat makes the best sense in the context of your overall financial life and objectives.

Joyce Goodhand, Executive Director of theSouthwest Crisis Services in Swift Currentgave a talk on the services they provide. Shealso discussed how the demands havechanged over the last 25 years and what ad-ditional work is now being done.
Unlike similar crisis services in larger cities, where as many seeking shelter are turned
away as are accepted, the Safe Shelter is stillable to accept or arrange accommodation foreveryone who arrives. This is a challengingtask and is linked to several other
programs that provide outreach supporton a one-to-one basis. Also, GenesisHouse now makes affordable long-termhousing available for women and childrenwho are at risk after their stay at the Shel-ter has ended.
The Crisis Line operates on a 24 hour ba-sis providing support, information, andreferrals, at no cost, to all residents of theSouthwest. They receive more than 400calls a year from men, women and chil-dren in need of help.
The RWI has been a long standing sup-
porter of the Southwest Crisis Servicesand presented Joyce with a cheque at theend of her talk. This kind of quiet supportkeeps the doors open for all. JK
