As well as classroom teaching sessions, the first week of your Programme will also involve induction andregistration onto the Programme, and activities on both the Manchester and Ormskirk sites. This bookletshould give you all the information you need, but please ask amember of teaching staff if something is not clear.

Congratulations on successfully securing a place on the pre-registration Operating Department Practiceprogrammes. This is the start of an exciting time for you and obtaining your degree will be the beginning ofa life long career which is going to be hard work, challenging and extremely rewarding. The opportunity tocare for patients when they are at one of the most vulnerable points of their treatment is a privilege, but itis also our privilege to be able to welcome you into the Faculty of Health and Social Care and be part ofshaping your future.

The Faculty is made up of 178 staff who are here to help teach guide and support you and ensure you havea positive student experience.

In terms of practice, Edge Hill has excellent relationships with staff in operating departments throughoutMerseyside, East Cheshire and Greater Manchester, and the practice placement experience of our studentshas been voted best in the country for two years running in the National Student Survey.

Your Fresher’s week and induction week have been designed to give you time to settle into University life,introduce you to the programme, teaching staff and personal tutor. It is also about getting to know eachother and making new friends.

The first few weeks will be daunting and you will receive a lot of information; do not worry if not all of itsticks at first, you can always get further advice from your personal tutor, module leader or ProgrammeLeader.

Don’t hesitate to contact members of Edge Hill staff at any time byemail, phone or in person. Our reception staff are always willing tohelp if you are unsure or cannot find the person you need to speak to.

We wish you well over the next three years and hope that you will makethe most of all the opportunities there are for you. Remember, whilethis Programme is partly about us teaching you, it is also about youlearning from us. That means you will have to work hard both inpractice and in theory in order to achieve the learning outcomes foreach module. If you find that you are struggling with your work orassignments, your first port of call is your personal tutor, so contactthem for anything you need. Our role is to get you through thisprogramme – your responsibility is to engage with the programmeand get everything out of it that you can. It’s also worth noting that ifyou pass your assignments then you will have a better work life balance(more time for social activities!), because you won’t need to resit yourassignments. In other words, work hard, play hard!
