ED KILBOURNE IN CONCERT AT

SOUTHERN HILLS, AUGUST 10

Singer, storyteller, and folk-theologian, Ed

Kilbourne, will be performing at Southern Hills

on Sunday, August 10 at the 9:30 and 11 AM

Traditional services, and an informal afternoon

concert in Herren Hall at 5:00 PM. This popular

artist is known for his collections of moving

music, quirky humor, and insightful monologues.

He combines his acoustic guitar and singing with

a storytelling style often compared to that of

Garrison Keillor, the radio humorist from "Lake Wobegon". Over the years, we have had

a variety of special music Sundays at our church, including services that featured jazz,

Bluegrass, and Celtic. We are looking forward to Ed's unique musical presentation!

Ed grew up in China, Korea and Japan, where his parents served as missionaries. After

completing college and seminary, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia and began his career

there as a United Methodist minister. As his gifts for teaching and performing became

known, he was invited to serve the church as a musician and spiritual resource person,

touring extensively in the Southeast and throughout the nation. In the early 70's Ed

moved West, making his home in the mountains of Colorado. In the late 70's, he moved

back to the Southeast, this time settling in South Carolina.

During a professional career of 8000-plus solo appearances over the last 40 years, he has

worked in every region of the United States and toured in Europe. Ed has recorded 23

albums, among them a 4-CD collection of in-concert performances of his stories and

songs, "The Grateful Ed Live" released in 2008. His latest CD's are "A World Of Good"

and a second greatest hits collection, "The Best Of Ed/Volume 2".

Ed's wife, Kathleen, is a United Methodist minister. She is the director of the Master Of

Arts In Practical Theology degree program on the Charlotte campus of Pfeiffer

University. She also serves as the coordinator of the Center For Deacon Education, a

partnership with Wesley Theological Seminary. Ed and Kathleen make their home in the

country, near Rock Hill, South Carolina and on Manasota Key in Englewood, Florida.

By the way, Ed is my first cousin and we both grew up in Seoul, Korea. This will be a

good day to invite friends to our church. Everyone is welcome!

We’ve recently launched a brand new website at Southern Hills UMC!

www.southernhillsumc.org

Log on and check us out! We’ve used many photos that our church photographers have

taken at various events. If you see a photograph of you or your children that you would

prefer not be used, please email Rev. Jill Ruhl at [email protected]. The new

website will be managed in-house by our staff. If you have a need that involves the

website, please call the church office (859) 277-6176.

Greeters Update

Thanks to the following people for

stepping up and helping out with

our In-reach Ministry.

Hazel Chappell has volunteered to be the Inside Greeters

leader. She will be preparing the schedule and notifying

you as to when you serve. You may contact Hazel at

[email protected].

Pat Tatman will continue to work the Welcome Center

schedule on Sunday mornings.

Susie Mollencop will lead the Outside Greeters.

Barbie Lally will be in charge of doughnuts each Sunday.

Going through a tough time right now?

Do you desire Christian guidance and fellowship,

But aren’t sure anyone will understand what you’re going through?

Southern Hills is a Stephen Ministry congregation. In Stephen Ministry

congregations, trained lay caregivers (called Stephen Ministers) provide one-to-

one Christian care to those experiencing difficult situations—to the bereaved,

hospitalized, terminally ill, separated, divorced, unemployed, relocated, and others facing a crisis or life challenge.

Stephen Ministers provide quality caring ministry for as long as people need it.

Some blessings you may experience by talking with a Stephen Minister:

Receive quality, Christ-centered, confidential care for your hurts and needs

Find hope, healing, and a new sense of worth through the support of a Stephen Minister

Know you are remembered and supported in times of personal difficulty

Receive ongoing care for continuing needs long after the onset of a crisis, when others may have forgotten

Grow in a deeper relationship with the Lord as you experience God’s unconditional love for you through your

Stephen Minister

Contact Rev. Jill Ruhl, Jo Palmer, Barbie Lally or David Bowles through the church office at 277-6176

to connect with a Stephen Minister.

Norm Newsome highly recommends

“Being United Methodist:

What It Means, Why It Matters”

by J. Ellsworth Kalas.

This book illuminates the origins of

the Methodist movement,

Methodism’s foundation in social justice ministries, the

growth of the movement into a Church, and the impact

Methodists have had throughout history.

Learn such things as how Methodists sang their faith,

about Methodism’s part in the authoring of the

Emancipation Proclamation, how Methodist’s have forged

new pathways in society, and how Methodism is

connected to other institutions such as the Salvation Army

and the Goodwill.

BRIAN SHUMARD IS OUR NEW DIRECTOR OF YOUTH MINISTR

We are pleased to welcome Brian Shumard as our new Director of Youth

Ministries! Brian and his wife, Janeen, are coming to us from Christ United

Methodist Church, Middletown, Ohio, where Brian has been the youth minister for

the past five years. Brian and Janeen are both graduates of Asbury University. Brian

is a Ohio native, Janeen is originally from Midway, KY. She is employed by Xerox. Brian has considerable abilities

with communication, teaching and music (he plays guitar). We look forward to sharing many years of growth and

ministry with Brian's leadership at Southern Hills! Here is what he has planned for August.

Fall Kickoff: 4:00 -7:30pm Sunday, Aug. 17th. The youth will meet at church and go over to Air Time Inflatables (we

have the place to ourselves!) where we will enjoy some food and talk about some of the big things coming up in the fall.

Invite a friend. Parents are welcome to come, too. There is space to hang out if going down a giant inflatable slide isn’t

your thing, but parents are welcome to join in the fun. Students bring $10 each. There is a waiver that needs to be filled

out. Pick one up from Brian or Samantha at church, or you may find it on our Facebook page, or text Brian your email

and he will send it to you. All students who are starting 6th grade, through 12th grade are invited to attend.

Middle School Sundae Sunday: Sunday, Aug. 3 All middle school students are welcome to come to church at 6 to 8

pm. We will be making our own ice-cream sundaes, hanging out, going to Southland Park to play games, and getting to

know our new 6th graders (and new youth pastor).

Sunday, August 24 from 6-8pm

Just because you’re headed back to school doesn’t mean

that the fun has to end! To celebrate the beginning of the

school year, SHUMY and Southern Hills Kids will be

having a joint party filled with messy games, water

activities, and overall mayhem. Come to the church at 6pm

on Sunday, August 24 wearing old clothes that are able to

be ruined. This event is open to anyone who is going into

Pre-K through 12th grade, as well as any parents who are

young at heart.

Medic Alert

Awareness Month

There are many different

types of Medic Alerts that

one may want to research prior to purchasing one. A

medical identification tag is worn as a bracelet, necklace

or on clothing. It allows the wearer to be identified as an

individual with a medical condition that may need

immediate attention. In recent years this type of

information has been recommended to seniors living

alone.

However, individuals with any medical problem that

cannot be easily seen or recognized need the protection

of some type of Medical Alert system: Heart conditions,

diabetes, epilepsy, blood thinners and allergies. A shot

of penicillin could end the life of one who is allergic to

it.

Some form of Medical Alert is important whenever one

cannot speak for themselves either because of

unconsciousness, shock, or just loss of speech. It can

contact help for individuals who have fallen and cannot

speak, get to a telephone or get up by themselves.

August is Medical Alert Awareness month and the

Health and Wellness Ministry team suggest if you or

someone you love, meets any of this criteria, check into

information on the many different types offered.

NOTES FROM JOAN

Acolyte Training Set for August 17

Our annual Acolyte Training Session has been set for August 17th at 6:00 p.m. It will be held in

our sanctuary. All rising 3rd through 7th graders who have not been trained, as well as their

parents, are invited to attend.

Acolytes play a very important role in our traditional worship services. They help us to center on God as they bring in

the light (of Christ) and the Holy Bible at the beginning of our services, and they serve as a reminder at the end of our

service that our worship does not end with the conclusion of the service. Instead, we are to take the light of Christ out

into the world.

The commitment level for this ministry is typically once every six or seven weeks, and we have a wonderful acolyte co-

ordinator, Marti Seng, who carefully arranges the schedule to accommodate everyone’s needs and family commitments

throughout the year. If you have questions or suggestions of potential new acolytes, please contact Joan Wooden

([email protected])

Graded Handbell Choirs for Children and Youth

This fall, we are adding an additional graded handbell choir to our current programming for

children and youth. Our newest bell choir, the Celebration Ringers, will meet on Tuesdays

from 4:00-5:00 p.m. and will be made up of 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders. Transportation will be

available from local schools, and a snack, as well as a time of fellowship/games, will be of-

fered before practice. This group will learn how to read music, basic ringing techniques, and how to care for the bells.

They will offer handbell music for our traditional services and will present outreach programs in the spring. The fall

rehearsal schedule for all of our bell choirs is listed below. If you would like more information, please contact Joan

Wooden:

Joyful Ringers (5th-7th graders) – Sundays, 3:30-4:30

Celebration Ringers (2nd-4th graders) – Tuesdays, 4:00-5:00 p.m.

Children’s Chimes (1st graders) – Sundays, 6:00-6:20 p.m.

MOVE and LOVE

Open to New

Members

If you love to sing, but

cannot make a twice a

week commitment to our Chancel Choir, please consider

joining our Men’s Only Vocal Ensemble our Ladies

Only Vocal Ensemble, this fall. Both groups are made

up of wonderful singers who are encouraging and

supportive of one another. They present their offerings

in worship once a month, as well as for special services

and programs. Rehearsals are held on Thursday

evenings from 6:15-7:15 (MOVE) and 7:15-8:30

(LOVE).

Taizé to Resume

Monthly Services on

August 20th

Beginning in August, we will

once again offer our monthly

service of prayer and Holy

Communion in the style of

Taize. This special

contemplative style of

worship will be held on the third Wednesday of each

month, from 6:15-7:00 p.m. Instrumentalists, liturgists

and singers are always needed to help lead this time of

worship. If you would like to volunteer, please contact

Joan Wooden.

they will learn some very special music which will be offered in our 11:00 a.m. services and as a part of our annual tour,

which takes place in the Spring. Southern Hills is blessed with some very talented children/youth in this age group, and

it will be fun to watch them grow into a full-fledged youth choir in the coming years.

Chancel Choir to Present Fauré’s Requiem

Our Chancel Choir has just begun working on the glorious Requiem, by Gabriel Fauré, which will be presented with a

small orchestra on All Saints Sunday (November 2). New members are always welcome in our choir, and fall is a

perfect time to make a commitment to this dedicated group of singers! Rehearsals are held on Wednesdays from 7:00-

8:30 p.m. Please contact any choir member for more information.

On behalf of the Wesley Foundation at the University of Kentucky I would

like to thank all those from Southern Hills who recently came forth in support

of purchasing two new washers and two new dryers, Speed Queen

Commercial coin operated appliances.

Also, the Wesley Foundation greatly appreciates help for ongoing repairs

needed at the facility on Columbia Avenue in getting ready for the Fall

semester.

It was a good showing from Southern Hills for the new director, William

Holden who started his ministry there July 1, 2014.

Sincerely,

Jerry Day

Member of the Board of Wesley Foundation.

From the Business Office – Rick Arnold

The mid-year operating statement was positive and we continue that trend into July. However, special projects continue

to tap into our resources. The Activities building HVAC project is complete. Our next project is a smaller one, and

involves replacing the broken concrete apron at the middle entrance of our parking lot, along with work to be performed

at our house on Laramie Drive.

Starting September 1, 2014, Kroger will be doing away with the “gift card” Fundraiser program and implementing a new

Community Rewards program, which ties Southern Hills directly to your Kroger Plus Card Number. Once Southern

Hills is a registered participant of this program, I will send out more information on how to sign-up.
