Assessment at Work...... The seminar this week will focus on communicating assessment information.

Consider the following: A set of parents comes to you with questions about why their child—whom they think

is brilliant— hasn’t been moved into the honors class. You have assessed their student for the first month of school and every indicator demonstrates that the child is not prepared (or qualified) for honors-level work. How do you communicate this evaluation to the parents? We will talk about various strategies for handling this situation--both good and bad.

Read carefully the Six Categories of Responsibility for Teachers, Responsibilities when Interpreting and Using Assessment Results, and Responsibilities When Communicating Assessment Results from Chapter 5 in Nitko. We will discuss the following: Once teachers have a job, issues such as responsibilities are rarely discussed

again. Why might that situation be good? Why might it be dangerous? Where else in your professional life have you been given a code of behavior (like

Chapter 5’s ethics and responsibilities)? Are such reminders helpful or harmful? What impact do you think this chapter's discussion will have on your future

teaching career?

REVISED: Field Assignment: Designing, Administering, and Evaluating Assessment Tools (Unit 4) Prepare a set of 3 activities on a given topic. Then design an assessment tool. Describe the

assessment tool, and then reflect on how you would administer, score, and analyze the results of a new assessment tool for a related set of learning targets in your classroom, place of work, or wherever you help others to learn.  Upon reflection, you will summarize the possible results to include the areas of strengths and weaknesses according to the instructional activities you created. What best practices were used in the activities and in your assessment tool? Based upon these results, what instruction should you plan? Write a report in which you describe the following:

the learning targets being assessed, the assessment tool or method, the conditions under which the assessment would be administered, how learners will probably perform on the assessment based on your instructional activity, an analysis of why particular learners might do well or poorly on this assessment, what kinds of further instruction the learners may need on the basis of these assessment results,

and self-reflection on the strengths and weaknesses of this assessment tool or method.

Summarize your findings in a report of 300-500 words. View the rubric under the Grading Rubric tab in the Course Home. Your Field Assignment is due at the end of Unit 4. Submit your work in the Dropbox basket titled Field Assignment.
