Ecumenical The defnition o ecumenical is universal, the worldwideChristian church or unity o religions. An example o ecumenical used
as an adjective is the phrase an ecumenical truth which meanssomething that everyone !elieves in.
"t is an adjective rom the word ecumenism meaning the idea o a
Christian unity in the literal meaning# that there should !e a single
Church. Ecumenism is separate and distinct rom nondenominational
Christianity, which see$s no common organi%ing principle.
This specifc sense o the word contrasts with interaithdialogue or
interaith pluralism aimed at unity or cooperation among diverse
religions and reerring to a worldwide religious unity !y the advocacyo a greater sense o shared spirituality.
The word is derived rom &ree$'()'*+- /oikoumene0, which means
the whole inha!ited world, and was historically used with specifc
reerence to the 1oman Empire. The ecumenical vision comprises !oth
the search or the visi!le unity o the Church /Ephesians 2#30 and the
whole inha!ited earth /4atthew 52#620 as the concern o all
Christians.

The diference between an ecumenical church rom other
churches
The Ecumenical Catholic Church /ECC0 is a denomination within the
universal Christian Church. "t teaches the aith o the 9icene Creed,
that one &od exists in three coe:ual and coeternal persons;the
oly =pirit;and that ?esus is the =on o &od and
redeemer o humanity, uniting Christians through the re!irth o
@aptism and the ellowship o the Eucharist. The liturgy o the ECC is
similar to that o the 1oman Catholic Church, !ut it is politically
independent and not under the jurisdiction o the 8aticanor the 1oman
hierarchy and thus is one o the "ndependent Catholic Churches.
hile the ECC shares the core Christian !elies with the 1oman Church
and most 7rotestant and Brthodox denominations, it is more li!eral onmany social issues.

FiMerent Christian denominations are also to !e considered in designma$ing o a church. Compare the two pictures o churches a!ove.
The church should implement an o!jective process that will properlydefne its needs and fnancial a!ility !eore proceeding into the churchdesign process. Foing so will lower the cost o the !uilding programwhile improving the churchLs satisaction with the design and !uildingprocess. "t will most oten !e in the churchLs !est interest to engagean outside consultant with the tools and experience to assist thechurch in o!jectively determining needs and a!ility.
4odern churches now are designed to provide mental, physical, as wellas spiritual relaxation. The modem church has now classrooms oreducational wor$, halls and parlors or social gatherings and agymnasium or the exerciseo the !ody.
&eneral Considerations#
SizeThe church should !e appropriate to its position and unction within thediocesan structure. A parish church should not compete with thecathedral, nor a private chapel with a parish church. The largest church!uilding is not necessarily the !est one or a particular congregation.4eeting liturgical needs and providing ullness o participation shoulddetermine the si%e o the !uilding, rather than such actors as strained

fnancial resources or expansive ground area. As an ideal norm, achurch is too large or eMective congregational participation when thepriest cannot !e seen or heard rom the arthest reaches o thecongregation it is too small when positive aspects o participation/processions, etc.0 are limited !ecause o cramped and crowded
acilities.
StylesThe church must serve people o our age# its architectural languageshould !e neither anachronistic nor exotic. >owever, existing churcheswhich are good examples o a particular style o architecture should !erenovated and adapted to the revised liturgical needs with great care.hen !uilding new churches, it should !e remem!ered that the art oour own day . . . should have ree scope in the church . . . /CAI, 6530.A church !uilding is a sign o what the Church is and rePects ourunderstanding o the Church.
Materialshere practical, materials ound in the locality should !e used in theconstruction o the church, i they are o good :uality and areservicea!le. @oth the architecture and materials should !e related tothe nature and character o the immediate surroundings. Extravagantmaterials and outmoded style oten deeat the economics o modernconstruction and may tend to ma$e the church appear less relevant tothe local community.
Decoration and Finish
Iavish display or its own sa$e should !e avoided, !ut !udgets must !eample to allow or that simple !eauty through which the sacred o!jectssay what they are. 7eople o all social classes deserve such !eauty ortheir worship. 9o!le !eauty results when simple materials are usedwell. Brdinarily, decoration and fnish should disclose !asic materialsand structure rather than cover them.
Interior PlanningChurch architecture can !e descri!ed as the meaningul and creativeorgani%ation o worship space. A church is designed, so to spea$, romthe inside out, with due consideration o outside limitations. Bnce the
worship areas have !een located, the rest o the structure can !ecreatively, practically, and !eautiully planned.
Functional ShapeThe design and arrangement o a church interior should !e aimed atma$ing the community action o worship practica!le and dignifed. Achurch is not only a temple or the divine presence, a place in whichone is !ut an awed visitor !ut rather it is the meeting place o people.

Bne o the appointments very oten used or liturgicalcele!ration is nonHpermanent art, e.g. !anners, wall hangings, graphics, or tapestries. Although the use o words /calligraphy0 can !ean integral part o nonHpermanent art, the message should not !elimited to a ver!al communication. The sensitive use o colors anda!stract orms in themselves can communicate the message.
Selection o the Design TeamThe most important step in !uilding or renovating a church is thechoice o the design team, which must unction together rom the
inception o planning through the completion o the !uilding process. This team may consist o an architect, artist, liturgical designer, or anygroup o these people. The team must also include the pastoral staMand representative committee mem!ers. They should possess agenuine understanding and experience o real and living liturgicalcele!ration in the given community and have a $een $nowledge orecent documents on the su!ject as it pertains to church architecture.

Dialogue with the "ommunity@uilding or renovating a church presupposes dialogue with theparishioners who must frst !e ormed into a living community opeople in relation to one another and with the design team. EducaHtional programs concerning the need to !uild or renovate and
especially the theology o the church !uilding, should !e conducted orall mem!ers o the parish.
