Economic Awareness ActivityBasics

This activity we're about to start is called Villages – this is based on Oregon Trail, Mafia, and Monopoly.

You will each receive a slip of paper with a profession and information on that profession.

Your goal is to survive the activity with the most money.

Economic Awareness ActivityBuying and Selling

Think Capitalism.

At the beginning, there are atleast two professions that sell the same resource. Therefore, these two professions will compete for other people's purchases by lowering their prices, trading inventory resources in exchange, or offering other deals.

If there is only one profession that can sell a resource, they are able to hold an auction to sell it the highest bidder, or may trade for another profession's inventory.

As the Market is commencing, raise your hand for the seller's attention and avoid calling out. During Intermissions (the times between Markets), you'll be able to move about freely and plan deals.

Economic Awareness ActivityTips (1 of 3)

Economic Awareness can be defined as “the passive assessing of one's surrounding in terms of profitability.”

This activity is meant to test your ability to assess your economic surrounding and achieve favorable results.

After the next two slides, there will be a three minute preparation period where you'll be able to work out deals with other players. You cannot exchange money or inventory during this period.

Similarly, there are intermission periods between each Market period that you'll be able to check your inventory and plan deals with other players. Again, you cannot exchange money or inventory during this time.

Economic Awareness ActivityTips (2 of 3)

This activity is very capitalistic, think in regards to capitalism.

You can buy a resource even if you already “have” one of it.

You cannot trade your “Want”s or “Have”s.

This game has purposely built-in loopholes, or what seem to be loopholes.

You are not obligated to show someone your slip.

Each slip has unique advantages, and a hint to making through the scenario as that profession.

Example Hint: “Keep everything secret.”

Economic Awareness ActivityTips (3 of 3)

There are five areas referenced on these slips: the North, the South, the East, the West, and the Central region. The drought, famine and illness take place in the Central region, as does nearly everything else.

If you originally sold one resource and you gain more of that resource from another player in any way, you are able to add the newly obtained stock to your inventory.

I suggest having at least one of each resource, but it isn't necessarily needed.
