LAYING PATTERN
The boards should be laid over a
non–bituminous vapour control layer.
Boards should be laid with edges butted
and in a break bonded pattern laid at
right angles to the edges of the roof or
diagonally across the roof.
The board is suited to a variety of laying
patterns. However, it is recommended
that whatever pattern is employed joints
are always break-bonded. On metal decks the long edges should be laid at right
angles to the corrugations. All board joints should be fully supported by the deck.
HEALTH & SAFETY
These rigid PIR foam products are chemically inert and safe to use. A leaflet
about satisfying the requirements of the "Control of Substances Hazardous to
Health Regulations, 1988' (COSHH) is available.
HANDLING
■ Do not drop boards
■ To cut use a sharp knife or fine tooth saw
■ Wear eye protection
■ Damaged boards should not be used
Cutting with power tools generates dust so should be kept to a minimum.
Ideally all operations which produce dust should be carried out in well ventilated
conditions; where possible a dust mask selected in accordance with BS EN 149
should be worn.
Ensure accurate trimming to achieve close butt joints and continuity of insulation,
particularly around projections through the roof.
Whenever work is interrupted, a night joint must be made to prevent water
penetration.
STORAGE
Store boards in a flat, dry area off the ground away from possible mechanical
damage and sources of ignition. Boards should be completely covered with
weatherproof sheeting.
The boards must be kept dry at all times and not exposed to rain. Boards wetted
accidentally must be replaced or allowed to dry fully before application of the
waterproof layer.
The boards must be protected from prolonged exposure to sunlight and should
be stored either under cover or covered with opaque polyethylene sheets.
DIMENSIONS
Available in standard sizes and various thicknesses as shown below:
Width: 1200mm
Length: 2400mm
Thickness: As per Table 1 30 to 200mm.
Tapered insulation boards as part of a tapered roofing scheme give roofs
a surface finished fall of 1:60 and 1:80. Further details available from EcoTherm
Technical Services.

COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH
Typical compressive strength for the foam exceeds 150KPa when
tested to BS EN 826: 1996 Thermal Insulating Products for Building
Applications-Determination of compressive behaviour.
DENSITY
PIR foam has a density of 32 Kg/m3
DURABILITY
The product is stable, rot proof and durable and will remain effective
as an insulation system at least as long as that of the waterproof
covering. Durability depends on the method of application, the
supporting structure and conditions of use.
The insulation core and facings resists attack by mould and microbial
growth, and do not provide any food value to vermin.
MOISTURE TOLERANCE
PIR core of EcoTherm Insulation boards has a low moisture absorption
capacity, making it tolerant for use in damp environments.
RESISTANCE TO SOLVENTS - FOAM
EcoTherm roofboard resists attack from alkalis, dilute acids, mineral oil
and petrol. The foam is not resistant to ketonic solvents. Boards which
have been in contact with harsh solvents, petrol, mineral oil or acids
should not be used. Damaged boards should not be used.
THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY
The low emissivity surface of the reflective foil can cut radiation heat
transfer across an adjoining air-space.
The thermal conductivity (λ value) of the foam is 0.022 W/mK and the
thermal resistances of the range within given constructions are shown
in Table 1.
TYPICAL WEIGHT
120mm board is 11.8kg
WATER VAPOUR RESISTANCE
Foil facings have a high water vapour resistance and will, therefore,
provide significant resistance to water vapour transmission. This will
minimise both surface and interstitial condensation.
The necessity for the inclusion of a water vapour control layer in the
roof construction should be assessed in accordance with BS 6229:2003
Code of Practice for flat roofs with continuously supported coverings.
Where the specified vapour control layer is other than a bituminised
felt, eg polyethylene, any fixings which penetrate the vapour control
layer should be of the self-sealing type, which are automatically fused
to the vapour control layer during application.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONSConsideration should also be given to BS 5250: 2002 Code of Practice for control of condensation in buildings and BS 6229: 2003 Code of Practice for flat roofs with continuously supported coverings. Mechanical fixings should be specified as recommended in the BRUFMA information document ID/1/2009
ENVIRONMENTALPIR foam is CFC/HCFC free and Zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 3, better than the target value of 5. It has BRE Green Guide rating of A.
FIREThe fire rating of any roof containing the boards will depend heavily on the type of deck and the nature of the roof waterproof covering. The designation of the roof covering must meet the requirements of the national Building Regulations.
Further details on the fire performance may be obtained from EcoTherm Technical Services.
Achieves BS476-7: 1997 Class 1 rating for surface spread of flame.
ROOF LOADINGDepending on the chosen waterproofing system, EcoTherm insulation is suitable for use on roof decks which are subject to limited maintenance foot traffic. Walkways should be provided on roofs requiring regular pedestrian access. Whenever site work is to take place after the insulation has been laid, and the roof made water tight, the roof should be covered with protective board.
MECHANICAL FIXINGThe fixings used to secure the waterproofing membrane in most circumstances are also used to secure the EcoTherm roofboards. However, irrespective of the wind uplift considerations or distribution requirements for securing the membrane, the fixing of the boards should be considered separately.
The number of mechanical fixings required to fix EcoTherm roofboard will vary with the geographical location of the building, the topography and the height of the roof concerned. BS 6399-2 1997 should be consulted. It is essential that the EcoTherm roofboard is restrained over its full surface
area. A minimum of 6 mechanical fixings should be placed within the individual board area and be sited adjacent to the corners of the board. Any additional fixings needed should be evenly distributed over the full area of the board. Each fixing should incorporate a minimum 50mm diameter countersunk washer which must not restrain more than one board. Where alternative bar-fixing systems are specified the restraint offered by the specified system must at least equal the restraint that would be attained by the use of conventional washer and screw systems. The suitability of the substrate to accept and retain mechanical fixings must be checked prior to the work commencing. EcoTherm recommends the use of thermally broken tube fasteners.
STANDARDS AND APPROVALS PIR foam is produced according to BS EN 13165: 2008 Thermal insulating products for buildings-Factory made rigid polyurethane foam products-specification.
Eco-Fix is compliant with BS 4841-4: 2006
Covered by BBA Agrément Certificate No 07/4487.
Consideration should be given to the recommendations of SPRA (Single Ply Roofing Association) and BRUFMA (British Rigid Urethane Foam Manufacturers’ Association)
Details of Factory Mutual (FM) compliance and LPCB compliance are available from EcoTherm Technical Services.
SPANNING DISTANCE
SPECIFICATION CLAUSE The insulation shall be EcoTherm Eco-Fix _ mm thick - RigidPolyisocyanurate (PIR) foam core with aluminium foil facings on both sides.
