ALMOST EVERYONE enjoys a holiday. It gives us theopportunity to relax or otherwise to escape, at least momentar-ily, from our patterns of everyday life. But of all the holidaysChristmas, somehow, is a little different. There is somethingspecial about it.

Christmas is traditionally a time for family gatherings. Evenpeople who don't get along too well during the rest of the yeilleseem to set aside their differentes during the Yuletide whfriends and relatives journey — often many miles — to some-one's home for a Christmas get-together. And the task of pre-paring for many house- or dinner-guests seems to he lessbothersome than at other times.

A feeling of well-being and good-will develops, as we directour thoughts and efforts toward giving and doing for others.Christmas is more than a holiday; it is a feeling — an attitude.It is a time for friendship, and for being, and sharing, withfriends.

How will you spend Christmas? Most people, includingMTA employees, probably will celebrate it with relatives andfriends.

Marilyn Jarvis, 1Vlai1 Room Sorter Clerk, and her husbandwill have a double celebration: Christmas Eve with her parentsin Van Nuys, and Christmas Day with her in-laws in Glendale.

Marilyn's father, incidentally, is Don Bailey, an MTA Oper-ator at Division 8. Her father-in-law is a retired Pacific Elec-tric Supervisor, while a brother-in-law presently works atPE freight station an Santa Monica Blvd.

A. L. ("Pat") Patterson, Accounting Tab Operator, will alsospend the holidays with relatives. But hell travel quite a fewmiles to do so. His family is in Kansas, and "Pat" hasn't beenback there for four years. Also returning home for the occa-sion are his three sisters and two brothers. This year will bethe first since 1950 that the entire family will have been to-gether for Christmas. And, in addition to the immediate fam-ily, there will be several in-laws whom Pat hasn't yet seen.

Leonard Goericke, Division 21 Operator, recalls many pastChristmases when he hosted several friends who were unableto celebrate Christmas with their own families. He and his

wife plan a quieter Noel this year with their daughter and twograndchildren.

Traffic Man Wilbur ("Sandy") Saunders of Division 21 willspend the pre-Christmas weekend with relatives. He, his wifeHelene, and their son Larry will enjoy a large family reunionat his uncle's in Exeter. From 35 to 90 people — dose relatives,

i-laws, grandebildren, etc, — are expected at this affair, whichs 7 years old. A second celebration, with the Saunderses' im-mediate family, will take place on Christmas Day.

Operator James Boyd, of Division 2, does more than cele-brate Christmas. He captures it on film, so that in later yearshe and his wife may look back and actually see, rather thanmerely remember, their two children enjoying this magic day.His pictures are unposed. Rather, like the wide-eyed looks ofwonder on the faces of children, and feelings of love and pridein the hearts of parents, they are spontaneous.

Along with family ties and feelings of contentment which areevoked at Christmas, there are memories of bygone years.Some of these memories are pleasant; others are grim, and be-long in the past in order to make room for today's friendshipsand tomorrow's hopes, or for pleasanter memories.

Robert L. Fairfax, Division 11 Operator, remembers Christ-mas of 1951. He was in a foxhole in Korea with the Marines.His Christmas dinner was a can of pork and rice, and some

MTater. But he remembers also 1943, when he spent Christmasa boarding school in the Blue Ridge Mountains of West Vir-

ginia. There had been a fresh, clean snowfall. The Boys andgirls had a party and sang carols. "It was a beautiful setting:calm and peaceful — a perfect picture of Christmas."

Of what value is a penny?When Julia Mendoza, Macy shop cleaner, was a child of

six, a single penny in her Christmas stocking was a wonderfulgift. It made the holiday complete, and one which still standsout in her mind, regardless of the more bountiful Christmasesshe and her four children have since experienced.

Christmas is made up of memories — and of "little" things,which, when we look back, suddenly have become important.

Sam Singer, Jr.

Earl ("Smokey") Stover of Division 11 recalls 1947. Hiswife, Iole, had recently arrived from Rome, where she had met"Smokey" while he was in the service. It was her first Christ-mas in this country. It is among his favorites.

When Sam Singer, Jr., Division 2 Mechanic "A", thinks ofChristmas, he remembers especially those years when hisdaughter Linda (now 7) and his son Michael ( 5 ) first were oenough to appreciate the event. "I got a kick out of watchithem enjoy it for the first time. I can still see their expressionsof happy surprise and excitement."

Operator Jimmy Kresge of Division 2 likes to talk about lastChristmas when, for the second consecutive year, he and hiswife won first prize for having the best decorated home in EastLos Angeles. "We did all the decorating ourselves," addsJimmy, with justifiable pride.

"I remember," reminisced Operator William Laird of Divi-sion 20, "a wooden train I made for myself one Christmaswhen I was six. The family didn't have too much that year, sowe made our own presents. The train was made of woodenblocks, joined together. For flat cars I used plain flat blocks.To make a tank car I added a round snuff can. I remembermaking wooden doll beds for my two sisters. But I also re-member the fun of just anticipating Christmas."

John Larrabee, Schedule Bureau Vari-typer, recalls Christ-mas of 1942. He was in the Naval Reserve in North Africaand had received no mail for two months. "On December 2my morale was as low as it could have been. Then, the nexday, I received two months' hack mail: 38 packages and about40 letters! It took me a month to read all the letters andpapers; and I received so many fruit-cakes and cookies that Igave most of them to local residents with whom I had becomeacquainted. The people were overjoyed — especially the chil-dren!"

In all probability, John, too, was overjoyed. For this is whatChristmas is for: joining with others in the realization thatthere is something which, despite our differentes, binds ustogether. This "something" is the Spirit of Christmas — its

THE FIRST PHASE of a two-step project for consolidating MTAswitchboard centers and communi-cation centers was completed onSaturday, November 22, when thetelephone information centers andchannels of the predecessor com-panies were combined into oneunit on the 7th floor of the TransitAuthority Building at 1060 SouthBroadway.

All passenger information con-cerning MTA lines, routes, and

Wschedules is now obtained in thecentral area by calling a single newnumber: Richmond 7-4455.

MAdison 7-7731, the old numberfor the MCL information center onthe mezzanine floor of the PEBuilding, has been discontinuedand the center closed. Persons dial-ing this number are referred, by atelephone-company operator, to thenew information number.

Richmond 9-7211, the old num-ber for LATL information andbusiness calls, remains, but is nowused only for business calls to thevarious departments.

A third number, MAdison 7-2792,the old number for calls to formerMCL departments (and for after-hours MCL information), also hasbeen discontinued, as has the PBXboard on the sixth floor of the PEBuilding. Persons who dial thisnumber are referred to Richmond9-7211. The switchboard Operatorthen gives the caller a new, tem-porary number by which he canreach the desired MCL depart-ment. Calls to LATL departmentscan still be made directly.

Only two former MCL depart-ments—Lost and Found and Bag-gage and Express—have a directtie-in with Richmond 9-7211. Theothers will have new numbers untilsoon after the first of the year, atwhich time a company-wide masterdial system PBX switchboard willbe installed next door to the newinformation board. This new PBXwill receive, and channel directlyto the appropriate department, allnon-information calls, thus com-pleting the final stage of the con-solidation.° PBX: Private Brauch Exchange.

If remarks such as the foregoingleave you speechless, you can ap-preciate the problems of Chief Op-erator Elizabeth Wood and herstaff of 40 Information-PAX Oper-ators. They are forever copingwith such verbal gems.

These operators — all women —handle all incoming phone calls,

and must be qualified both as in-formation clerks and telephone op-erators.

When serving as telephone op-erators they "man" the two-placePAX board at 12th and Sentous,switching business calls to the prop-er company extension, or transfer-ring information calls to the infor-mation center. When acting as in-formation clerks they take theirplaces at one of the 16 cubicles atthe information center at 1060 S.Broadway, where information isgiven 24 hours a day, seven days aweek — although a full crew is notalways on duty.

Information is also given at theInformation Desk at the Sixth andMain depot — the only place whereinformation clerks are visible to,and handle face-to-face inquiriesfrom, the public.

Before a girl can qualify as anInformation-PAX Operator, she re-ceives six months' training in rout-ing and schedule-reading.

After the breaking-in period, in-formation personnel have onlymaps, timetables, and their wits toaid them in smoothing out themany involved situations which willconfront them regularly.

Bus for Raut StartsOn San Pedro Line

FOR THE FIRST TIME, pas-sengers from San Pedro may traveldirect to the Union Station as aresult of the change from rail tobus, effective Dec. 8, on the LosAngeles-San Pedro Line, No. 37.

Trips to the Union Station aremade on an express route over Ava-Ion Blvd. and the Harbor Freeway.Coaches on this route will beknown as Harbor Freeway Flyers.Flyer service leaves San Pedro Sta-tion hourly from 5:40 a.m. to 5:40p.m., as compared with the formerrail service of one limited trip toLos Angeles in the morning peakand one limited to San Pedro in theevening peak.

For local passengers, a new busline from San Pedro parallels therail line to a terminus at ComptonStation, where augmented LongBeach rail service (Line 36) willpick up those riders destined topoints between Los Angeles andCompton.

A total of 52 one-way trips toand from San Pedro daily are nowbeing made, as against 31 on theformer rail line.

As new sections of the HarborFreeway are opened, the Flyerroutes will be modified to make useof them to the extent practical.

As is customary when importantchanges in service or new lines arecontemplated, the MTA held aspecial luncheon meeting of civic,governmental, and press Leadersin the districts through which theline operates, in order to acquaintthem with the proposed service.Nearly 80 guests heard ExecutiveDirector Ralph P. Merritt and Gen-eral Manager Cone T. Bass teil thestory.

Huntington Park LineCombines with LB-San Pedro

THROUGH SERVICE betweenHuntington Park, Long Beach, andSan Pedro began Dec. 8 when theLong Beach-Huntington Park Line40 was combined with the LongBeach-San Pedro Line 66.

Making use of existing routes, thenew service is called the Hunting-ton Park-Long Beach-San PedroMotor Coach Line 66. Frequencyof service remains about the sameas before.

Flyers from PomonaTHE FINE RECEPTION given

the West Valley Freeway Flyers(which have expanded from anoriginal 8 to a current 19 one-wil)trips a day) led to a decisiontry Flyer service between Pomonaand Los Angeles beginning Mon-day, Dec. 8.

Like the West Valley Flyers, theSan Gabriel Valley Freeway Flyerservice began with two peak-hourinbound and two peak-hour out-bound trips.

A.M. trips leave Pomona Stationat 6:33 and 7:03, making all localstops in Pomona, five stops in WestCovina, and continuing non-stopto Los Angeles, arriving at theMTA Coach Depot at 7:40 and8:10.

Charley worked as a Conductor out ofDivision 3 from 1917 to 1938, before be-coming a Checker.

For almost 41 years the rare and gen.tle spirit of "Snowie" (Marion Snowden)has been a blessed influence in the livesof her fellow-workers at PE, MCL, andMTA. The affection she inspires has notbeen limited to the members of the PEand Metro accounting departments or ofthe MTA Secretary s office — in all ofwhich places she has worked in variousclerking capacities. It originates withher own great kindness and love forothers. "She is always ready to do a goodturn, and eager to help when the going isroughest," says Assistant Auditor E. H.Uecker, who was her superior officer formany, years. "Her work was always per-fect.
