Read the passage below.
Painfully Sweet
Sue always had a sweet tooth. She liked to eat chocolates, sweets and cakes. One night, she was burning the midnight oilto prepare for her examinations. As she studied, she kept shoving
jellybeans into her mouth.
A few weeks later, she had a toothache. To avoid getting a
scolding, she told her mother a cock and bull story about how she got her toothache. However, her mother knew that she
was lying. She has fully aware of Sues weakness for sweets and
chocolates.
The next day, Sues mother took
her to the dentist. Sues mother told her
to bear in mind the consequences of eating too many sweets. True enough,
the doctor recommended extracting
a badly decayed tooth. Sue had
learned a lesson. She decided to turnover a new leaf.
Note: An idiom is a group of words with a meaning of its own that is different from the meaning of each separate word in the idiom. The English language is full of idiomatic expressions.

Read the passage carefully.
Tom was a healthy young man but he was a simpleton. When it was time for him to earn a living, his father could not get him any work. Finally, he became a herdsman, looking after his fathers three buffaloes.
Tom found it difficult to distinguish one buffalo from another. Once he
had put his fathers buffaloes in the field, he could not trace them among
the buffaloes of other herdsmen. The other herdsmen knew this and they took advantage of it. They just lazed on the grass, laughing and joking, and whenever they saw a buffalo wandering out of the field, they shouted, Tom,
Tom, there goes your buffalo! Tom, thinking every buffalo that wandered out was his, spent the whole day chasing and catching the buffaloes. When evening came, he had to wait till the other herdsmen had taken away all their buffaloes before he could leave with his buffaloes. As a result, he arrived home late. This happened for many days until his anxious father found out the trick played on his son.
So the next day the father tied some leaves on the horns of his three buffaloes and said, Now, my son, look at the buffaloes carefully and
remember that only a buffalo which has leaves round its horns is your responsibility. Do not tire yourself by herding all the buffaloes in the field.
That morning, whenever the other herdsmen shouted, Hey, Tom, there
goes your animal, Tom glanced at the buffalos horns, and if he saw no leaves on its horns, he just sat down and took no further notice. However,
by afternoon, Toms secret had been discovered by his companions. They at once tied leaves onto the horns of their buffaloes, too. As a result, poor Tom again spent the entire afternoon chasing all the stray buffaloes. He arrived
home late again. His anxious father had been waiting for him at the gate
of his farm. Tom complained, Father, all was well in the morning but by
afternoon, leaves have grown on the horns of the other buffaloes too.

Right Before The Exam Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) - ENGLISHfor Upper Primary Levels RIGHT BEFORE THE EXAM - PSLE ENGLISH aims to lessen examination anxiety by preparing students sufficiently to tackle standard and tricky examination questions.
The 6 sets of mock examination papers here simulate the style, type and standard of questions that are found in the PSLE English. The perforation on each set of examination papers allows students to tear them off easily and attempt each examination paper like an actual examination. The questions prepared for this particular book are interesting and varied with the aim to help improve students ability to answer examination questions.
A valuable feature in this book is the model compositions provided at the back of the book. These provide students an opportunity to learn creative words and phrases, serving as a resource for writing ideas.
Right Before the Exam - PSLE English is a must-have to complete the students preparation for important examinations. Students will gain a sense of achievement and find themselves ready to take on that final important examination.

Reproduction In Plants
Germination
If a seed is scattered and lands at a place where it is able to obtain sufficient air, water and warmth, it will start to grow and develop into a seedling. We call this germination.
Germination is the process where a seed develops into a seedling.
Cycle of a plant
Other Methods Of Reproduction In Plants
Non-flowering plants, as the term implies, do not have flowers. Thus, they cannot reproduce seeds to make new plants.
Non-flowering plants reproduce in a different way.
1 By Spores
Non-flowering plants such as ferns have tiny spore bags on the underside of their leaves. The spore bags in these ferns contain numerous spores which are released by the plant. Some of the spores which land in places with suitable conditions (i.e. having sufficient air, water and warmth) will develop into new plants.
birds nest fern
The seed leaves provide food to the seedling because it cannot make its own food.
The first leaves start to grow. The young plant can now photosynthesize and make food for itself. The shoot will grow towards the sunlight.
The seedling continues to grow until it finally becomes an adult plant. The adult plant produces flowers which will later develop into fruit and seeds when they are pollinated and ferti-lized. The cycle then continues.
Roots start to grow downwards to anchor the new plant firmly in the soil. The roots also absorb water and mineral salts from the soil.

Mathematics Thinking Skills & Heuristicsfor Primary Levels The THINKING SKILLS & HEURISTICS SERIES focuses on the underlying processes and strategies essential to problem solving. Each book introduces various skill sets and builds upon them as the level increases. The 6-book series covers the following thinking skills and heuristics:
Thinking Skills:
Analysing Parts and Wholes
Comparing
Classifying
Identifying Patterns and Relationships
Deduction
Induction
Spatial Visualisation
Heuristics:
Act It Out
Draw a Diagram / Model
Look for a Pattern
Work Backwards
Make a List / Table
Guess and Check
Before-After
Make Suppositions
Use Equations
Students who are keen to develop their abilities in problem solving will learn quickly how to
make sense of the problem sum: what am I asked to find?
make use of given information: what do I know?
think of possible strategies: have I come across similar problems before?
choose the correct strategy: apply what I know confidently!
solve the problem: work out the steps...
check the answer: is the solution logical and reasonable?
Practice questions follow after each example of skill set and 3 graded Reviews (easy, intermediate, challenging) are provided for an overall assessment of the skills learnt. The worked solutions show the application of the strategies used. Students will find this series invaluable in helping them understand and master problem-solving skills.
