1) Introduction

The purpose of easyWriting is to enhance student’s writing skills through an online platform subsequently,

teacher can evaluate student’s artifacts online effortlessly and effectively. In easyWriting, students can

learn and enhance writing in these subjects: Chinese, English, Science, and Liberal Studies. In addition,

easyWriting includes many topics for writing and learning. These include 24 topics found in the Chinese

subject, 120 topics found in the English subject (Advanced and Basic version), 24 topics from Liberal

Studies (English and Chinese version) and 12 topics from Science for secondary one to secondary three.

1.1) Initial Settings

Create a role for users.

Click “ ” to add user(s) in Member List page.

Select user(s) from the list on the left to the right. Click “Add”.

Enable / disable the Writing module in Module Administration page by clicking / checking its

designated rights.

Teacher Assistants to evaluate the student writings.

Students to do writing exercises.

Choose eLearning > easyWriting.

2) Teacher > Manage Exercise

You can introduce the structures, features and examples of different text types through the writing steps.

The system provides different text type of theme / topics for selection.

2.1) Create a New Exercise

Go to eLearning > easyWriting.

Click “ ” in “Management” page.

Fill in the “Exercise Name” (recommended no duplication).

Select “Grade”, “Theme”, or “Topic”.

Click “ ” to change the template in “Paper Template”.

Fill in introduction. (Note: It will show in the welcome message page)

Select the desired students to take this exercise in “Target”.

Select the desired “Teacher” for evaluating this exercise. Only the assigned teacher can view /

evaluate it.

Set / Define the Marking methods.

Fill in a marking distribution in the “Full”, “Pass”, and “Lowest boxes”.

In the “Set Marker” section, tick the weighting of mark for “Teacher” / “Peer”. Set the

marking weight (%) for “Teacher” and/or for “Peer”.

In the “Peer Marking settings” section, divide the class into groups if necessary. Set the

group number and click “ ”. The system groups the students randomly into

the specific group member. Teacher can always re-order any students in the groups by

dragging and dropping them into different groups.

Divided / assigned student into different group by clicking “ ”.

Enable peer’s name to marker (student) by ticking show peer’s name to marker.

Click “Apply”.

Set the “Start Date” and “End Date” (and time if needed) to allow revision and submission of

exercise in the “Time” section.

Set the exercise to “Public” or “Private” in “Status” section.

Click “Submit”.

2.2) Edit Exercise

Click an exercise in the “Management” page. You will be brought back to the page as shown in

Step 2.1. Follow the steps described in 2.1 to edit an exercise.

2.3) Delete Exercise

Click an exercise in the “Management” page

Click “Delete”. You will be prompted a confirmation message. Click “OK” to confirm it.

3) Teacher > Content Input

You can enter contents such as school-based writing content, sample writing, suggested vocabularies,

grammar analysis and learning tips in “Content Input” page.

3.1) Create New Content

Go to eLearning > easyWriting.

Click “ ” at “Content Input” page (To edit the content, see steps 3.1-3.8).

3.2) Topic & Theme

Type a “Topic Name”.

Fill in an instruction.

Specify a “Level” (e.g. Basic or Advanced, only applicable for English).

Specify a “Grade” (e.g. S1, S2, S3).

Click “Save”.

3.3) Step 1 – Examining the Question

Fill in an instruction.

Select the “Texttype”.

Fill in a “Purpose” answer.

Fill in “Content”.

If the teacher has additional reference, he / she can attach it by clicking the “ ” icon.

Click “Save”.

3.4) Step 2 – Brainstorming

Fill in an instruction.

Click “Save”.

Specify a “Concept Map” (e.g. PowerConcept or PowerBoard or Attachment).

Click “Save”.

If the teacher has additional reference, he / she can attach it by clicking the “ ” icon.

Click “Save”.

3.5) Step 3 – Sample Writing, Vocabulary, Grammar Analysis

Fill in an instruction in

the “Instruction” section.

Fill in writing samples

in the Sample Writing

section (e.g. “Paragraph”

and “Sentence Structure”).

The initial settings come

with three paragraphs.

3.6) Step 4 – Drafting

Fill in an instruction.

Enter writing hints in “My Draft” section.

Click “ ” to begin with, click “ ” to remove hint.

If the teacher has additional reference, he / she can attach it by clicking the “ ” icon.

Click “Save”.

3.7) Step 5 – Writing

Fill in an instruction.

If the teacher has additional reference, he/she can attach it by clicking the “ ” icon.

To provide extra writing tips, you can write additional information in “My Writing” section.

Click “Save”.

3.8) Resource (optional)

Enter a Name in the “Name” textbox.

Enter an URL in the “Website” field.

The expected results will display as follows:

Name: Wikipedia

Website (URL): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

Click “ ” to add additional URL’s or Click “ ” to remove any existing URL.

Click “Save”.

Note: The first row of input area for resource link will be shown by default. Please click “ ” to remove

if do not have resource link.

3.9) Publish, Edit, Copy and Delete the Input Content

Click “ ” to publish a new topic.

Click “ ” to revise contents of a topic.

Click “ ” to copy a content.

Click “ ” to delete a content.

Note: copy may not apply to all topics.

Note: the deleted content will be removed permanently and all the submitted exercises will be removed

permanently.

4) Teacher > Provide Comments

You can evaluate students’ exercises and review students’ progress.

4.1) Check Completed Writing

In the “Submitted / Total Students” column, teacher can view a summary of submissions.

E.g.: 2/6. Click 6 to view progress of all students.

In this table, teacher can view progress of all students. Click the green solid sphere to view

completed writing. Teacher can see how many writings, he / she has not yet evaluated.

4.2) Marking, Marks, Comments and Sticker

Use Editor to mark / correct a writing.

Enter “Marks”, “Add Comments” and “Give Sticker” located in the top-right of screen.

Click “ ”.

Click “ ”. In this case, a student will need to re-do his / her writing.

Click “ ” / “ ” to allow / disallow writing to be shown in the

“Share Writing” board.

Note: a button of “Redo” is showing up within the submission period.

5) Teacher > Share Writing

You can share a specific writing artifact with other students.

Go to eLearning > easyWriting.

Click read more to view best pieces of writing in “Share Writing” page.

6) Teacher > Report

You can view the reports and export students’ writing in the Report page.

Go to eLearning > easyWriting.

Click “Exercise Name” to view the report in “Report” page.

If needed, type “Exercise Name” in to view / read its report.

Click “Marks” to view the writing.

Click “Export CSV” to export current page data.

Click “Export All” to export all student’ writing in this group.

Click “Print” to print the current page data.

Click “Export” to extract each individual student’s writing.

7) Writing Samples (Chinese and English only)

You and students can view other Chinese and English writing samples by referring for the following steps.

Go to eLearning > easyWriting.

Click / to view a sample writing.

Click a text type and select a sample writing.

8) Student > Incomplete Writing

As a teacher, you can teach students how to complete an incomplete writing by referring for the

following steps.

8.1) Writing Exercise

Go to eLearning > easyWriting. You come to the main page of all exercises.

Mouse over a “Theme” to read instruction of an exercise.

Click a white sphere icon located in the “Examining the Question” column to carry on an

exercise.

8.2) Step 1 – Examining the Question

Click “Check” after filling in each question. The correct answer – in red – will be displayed after

the “Check” button.

Click “Next” to go to Step 2.

Note: You are required to go through all the steps in this analysis section.

8.3) Step 2 – Brainstorming

Note: You are required to construct your own idea in a “Concept Map”.

A window pops up to review the concept map.

8.4) Step 3 – Sample Writing, Vocabulary, Grammar Analysis

Click to read additional information.

You can add a new vocabulary in “My

Vocabulary” pool, located at the bottom of

“More Vocabulary” page.

After inserting a new vocabulary, click “Save”.

Click the “X” icon to close it. It goes back to

Step 3.

Click “Next” to go to Step 4.

8.5) Step 4 – Drafting

You can refer to information located on the right-hand side panel for drafting instruction.

Fill in each question located in “My draft” section, save it.

Note 1: Save As Draft – save it and stay in Step 4.

Note 2: Save and Next Step – will go to Step 5.

8.6) Step 5 – Writing

Finalize and proofread your own writing in Step 5, and submit to the teacher.

Click “ ” to upload the extra supporting attachment / reference materials to teacher.

You can refer to information located on the right-hand side panel for writing instruction.

Note 1: Save As Draft – save it and stay in Step 5.

Note 2: Submit – save and submit it to teacher.

9) Student > Make a correction (Re-do)

As a teacher, you can teach students how to make a correction / revision by referring for the following

steps.

9.1) Check Have Comment

You can always re-do a writing by clicking as a solid green sphere.

9.2) Edit / Re-do the Writing

You can always edit / re-do a writing during the amendment period (before completion date).

Follow the teacher’s comment, located at top of page, to amend your writing.

Click “Submit” to send to teacher.

10) Student > Completed Writing

As a teacher, you can teach students how to view past / completed writing exercises by referring for the

following steps.

10.1) View Previously Completed Writing

Click “Completed Writing” page.

Select an exercise by clicking “Topic Theme”.

View the submitted exercise and teacher’s comments by clicking comment icon.

11) Student > Peer Marking

As a teacher, you can teach students how to view, enter marks and give comments to your peer’s writings

by referring for the following steps.

Go to “Peer Marking” page to view an exercise that need to be evaluated from you.

Click the number located in the column of “To be Evaluated” to go into the writing.

Click “ ” to mark a writing.

You can add peer-marking by giving “Marks”, “Comments” or “Sticker” to other students.

Enter marks, add comment, or give sticker for a writing. Click “Submit” to save it.

12) Student > Share Writing

As a teacher, you can teach students how to view good writings by referring for the following steps.

Go to “Share Writing” page to view a shared writing.
