Getting Started:

Open Revit 2011On the Desktop

1. Go to the top most left corner to the big

R menu, and Click New then Project

2. In the New Project Menu click Browse

3. In the Choose Template Menu click Commercial Default (for a school) Residential Default (for a home)

4. Click OK 5. Click OK Again

(Wait until the screen loads.)

Application Menu – The main menu that allows you to save, print, load and create new projects

Quick Access Tool Bar – Shortcut symbols that allow you to do actions quickly

Tabs – Allow you to access the different options available in the program. They are categorized by their actions.

Tools – Each icon in a tab has tools. Each tool will do a different action.

Info Center – This area allows you access to help or specific knowledge you are looking for.

Properties Menu – Allows you to change the details of an object. Ex. Height of walls, and size of windows

Project Browser – Allows you to move from one view to another.

Elevation Tags – Allows you to see what the project looks like from each of the four sides.

For this project we will designate the following North (top), South (bottom), East (right), and West (left).

Big Tip: When you are stuck in an action, something you don’t want to do or created something you didn’t want, here is how to get out of it or fix it!

1. The Undo Button is our friend!!!!!!!2. If you Right Click the mouse there is a Cancel option. 3. If you Click on the Modify Button it will cancel the current option.

Project Browser: When moving from 3-D view to floor plan views use the Project Browser.

ZOOM OPTIONS

Right Click for your options; Zoom in Region (click and drag around the area you want to see.) Zoom Out 2x – zooms out a little at a time. Zoom to Fit – will fit everything you have drawn on one screen

Walls (The length of the walls will depend on your measurements)

Click on the Wall Tab

Note: The Properties Menu changes to the Properties Menu for a Wall

1. Choose the type of wall you would like to construct. Click on the Wall Type in the Properties Menu In the pull down menu you can choose any type of wall that matches

the construction of your school. (Most are Brick on Metal Stud)

2. Change the Unconnected Height value from 20’-0” to 12’-0” by typing the new number in the box.

Click once inside of the Elevation Tags area and drag your cursor across horzontally until the number reads 35’-0” and then click again. Zoom into the area if you are having trouble.

Continue to make your walls by dragging your cursor downward vertically until the number reads 35’-0” and click once.

Then continue around until you have a square making the four walls of a room.

(Do not worry if you are not exact we will fix it in the next step.)

Use the measurements of the classroom you found during the previous Area and Perimeter Lesson.

When drawing a wall you can change the measurement.

Click the Modify Tab Click on the Wall you want to change (It will change to blue when selected) Click on the dimension number, (The measurement number) Type the number that you want it to become. Click Enter. Fix all the walls until it looks like the shape of the room you are in and matches your

measurements.

Adding a Door Style: (Choose a door that is the same or similar to the door in your classroom.)

Click Door Tab

Click on Load Family Double Click Doors Find the one you like Click 1 Time Click OPEN Click OK

The new Door will now be in the Properties window as a choice.

Click on the pull down menu to the right of the picture. Choose the largest size of door in the style you loaded.

To insert a door, hover the cursor over the wall and click when you have found the correct position.

To find the correct position of the door in your classroom,measure from the end of a wall to the center of the door.

Repeat as needed.

Changing Door Swing and Direction>Click on Modify Tab

>Click on the Door you want to change in the drawing>Click the Arrows that correspond with the direction to change

Windows Note: All windows are dimensioned (measured) to their center.

Adding a Window Style: (Choose a window that is the same or similar to the windows in your classroom.)

Click Window Tab

The new Window will now be in the Properties window as a choice.

Click on the pull down menu to the right of the picture. Choose the correct size window in the style you loaded.

To insert a window, hover the cursor over the wall and click when you have found the correct position.

To find the correct position of the window in your classroom,measure from the end of a wall to the center of the window.

Repeat as needed.

Click on Load Family Double Click Windows Find the one you like Click 1 Time Click OPEN Click OK

Time to SaveGo to File, then Save As, Navigate to your Student Drive and save in your folder.

Name it Tutorial. Always save over this file or it will make multiple copies of the project.

Components: Furniture / Appliances / Plumbing

Adding Furniture Styles (Re-create your classroom. Do your best to match furniture.)

Click Component Tab

The new piece of furniture will now be in the Properties window as a choice.

Big Tips:

You only have to load a component once and it will remain in your component/element list along with its different sizes.

Search for the best furniture to match your room. It may not be exact.

Once you have gotten the routine on how to find the different items of furniture you can load anything using the same process.

Chairs, Computers, Windows, Doors, Appliances, Sinks, Toilets, etc.Have fun browsing through the Imperial Library.

Click on item you want to rotate (It should now be highlighted in blue)

Click and Drag to where you want the object to go.

3-D View Options

>Use the new movement tool in the right hand corner to spin and see the elevations.

>Click on the Box and use the mouse to spin.

>By clicking on the individual sides of the box you can look at the elevations.An elevation is a view of only one side.

If you edit within the 3-D view it will also be changed in the Floor Plan Views.

Raising Components off the Ground

Some components are automatically put at ground level. You may need to raise them to the correct height.

Examples: Television, Computers

Click the Modify Arrow

Select an Object you would like to raise (It should now be highlighted in blue)

In the Properties Menu Change the Offset by typing in the height you would like the component to be raised.

Click on the Floor Tab

Click on the North Wall

Click once on the East, South, and West Walls until the four Walls are highlighted Pink.

Click once on the Finish Icon

The walls will stop being pink. To check that you completed the floor, go to the 3-D view.

Roof

Click on the Roof Tab and the Arrow Below Click on Roof by Footprint

Click on the North Wall (Be sure to click on the outside of the wall so that it looks like below)

Click once on the East, South, and West Walls until the four walls are highlighted pink. The line will be outside of the actual walls to allow for an overhang.

Roof

Click on the Base Level and change it to Second Floor

Click once on the Finish Icon

When asked if you want to attach the highlighted walls to the roof? Reply (Yes)

The walls will stop being pink. To check that you completed the roof, go to the 3-D view.

Hiding and Un-Hiding and Object

*This is important after you put the roof on the project.*The roof must be hidden in order to see the interior of the space again.

Hiding the Roof

In the 3-D view, Click on Roof (it should now be blue) Click on the Temporary Hide/Isolate Icon

o It looks like a pair of eyeglasses) Click on Hide Category

o The roof will disappear

Getting the Roof Back

In the 3-D view, Click on the Temporary Hide/Isolate Icono The eyeglasses will now have a gray square behind it.

Click on Reset Temporary Hide/Isolate Icon Your roof will return

Changing the Style in 3-D

Visual Style in 3-D: The automatic option is (Hidden Line), Black and White

You can change the look of the 3-D view by choosing the other options using the Visual Style Icon

Deleting and Object

Click on an object you want to delete. (It will now be blue) Click; Delete, Backspace or

o Right Click on the object and Click Delete

Wireframe – You can see through the building and every line that makes up the drawing. Hidden Line – Shows the building in a black and white, solid form Shaded – Puts color and shading into the picture without defining edges. Shaded with Edges – Shows the building in the standard colors with all shadows and edges.

(Best for frequent switching of drawings.) Consistent Color – Shows the coloring of materials without shadows. Realistic – Allows the most detailed view of the building. Shows the details in materials,

color and shadow. The most realistic of all the options.

Tips and Hints:

Do not over click, wait for the computer to finish its task. If something doesn’t work the first time, try again. READ, READ, READ the directions carefully. Use the tutorial as a reference if you forget how to do something. It is OK to mess up as long as you learn from your mistakes. Keep trying and have fun!
