ARNOLD ACADEMY PAGE 2

Dear Parents/ Carers I am very pleased to report that, following the extremely hard work of the Governing Body Appointments Panel, Arnold Academy has a ‘headteacher designate’ to start in September 2012. I am delighted with the result of the selection process (having met all but one of the potential candidates during their informal visits to our lovely academy in February (see the report from Rhys Chesters-Lewis, our Chair of Governors, further into our newsletter). I have already had a conversation with my successor and he is being kept fully informed about the potential developments in the coming summer term.

On Thursday 22nd March we were thoroughly entertained by the children with their arts work. Paintings were displayed to perfection; boys and girls performed a wide variety of dances; the actors and actresses showed a fantastic range of dramatic styles from improvisation to slapstick and silent comedy. This was cleverly interspersed with musical interludes from the orchestra and examples of class compositions. What a wealth of talent!

Thursday was certainly a day to remember, as we are thrilled to announce that Mrs Lyn Lyman has been appointed as Headteacher at Icknield Primary School, Luton with effect from September 2012. Many congratulations to her from us all. I know that she will enjoy the challenges of headship as well as working with the younger children too. We will need to advertise for her successor (in conjunction with our new headteacher to ensure that he is involved in the appointment process).

At the same time, Miss Caroline Reeve has decided to hand over responsibility for the Key Stage Two Leader role and concentrate on class teaching – fortunately we won’t be losing her altogether, she has always been a welcome face at our partner lower schools liaising with teachers, children and parents to make sure there is a smooth transition to Arnold every September. Caroline’s photograph collection, built up

over many years, is a fantastic archive of many children’s development. Again, we will be advertising her role in the very near future. Mrs Alison Wood decided to leave us at Easter and we have been busy ensuring that we have a replacement for her to start straight after the break. I want to thank Alison for her teaching in Year 5 and I know that many children

Page 3: Easter Newsletter

PAGE 3

will miss her greatly. I particularly want to mention her enthusiasm for the Gardening Club, which will fortunately continue when she has departed. Seeing the children grow and nurture young seedlings into

produce that can be eaten has been most rewarding. We wish her well for the future. Her form class parents have already been informed about her departure and replacement.

We are very pleased to announce that Mr Neil Campbell will be taking over 5AW as form tutor and teach all Mrs Wood’s timetable. He will also be taking on responsibility for the Special Educational Needs Co-ordination at our academy, as I am currently ‘named

SENCo’ and this would have left a ‘gap’ in our provision at the end of the year. This gives us a term to ‘hand over’ the information Neil will need. Our two excellent Lead Teaching Assistants, Mrs Tracy Jones and Mrs Annalisa McKenna, will continue in the roles that they have been fulfilling for some time and will remain parents ‘first port of call’ for updates about special educational needs issues. Ms Alison Creed is also leaving us to move on to a bigger pupil and parent support role at Harlington Upper School. We wish Ali the best for the future as we know we will maintain contact as part of her new role liaising with us about the young people (and families) in our shared care. She is very thorough when it comes to following up issues that cause difficulties for any child or their parents as well as supporting the two Key Stage Leaders. In the mean time, if parents have any difficulties or concerns they can leave a message for the Key Stage Leaders via our Administration Staff in the front office.

Finally (on the staffing front), Mrs Sue Roberts is retiring from Arnold Academy after many years of service as both Art Technician and Lunch time Supervisor and, at one time, cleaner too! She has been a fantastic support to our young artists (and teachers) and given much of her personal time to such things as art exhibitions

and evening performances as well as helping with set designs. We wish her well in her time away from the ‘chalk face’. You will note that the disruption to the water services have been kept to the minimum whilst the pipework, that I told you was going to be put in along the A6 from Silsoe to Barton, is being installed. I am very pleased that this has been achieved as it has been very disruptive in the past for parents, pupils and staff at Arnold when the water has been off during the school day. Hopefully we will never have to close again because of a burst water pipe.

Barton 10K and 5K Run: We are coming up to our highly successful annual Barton 5K and 10K run. All children are welcome to run the 5K race and parents, friends and even grand parents can enter various versions of the 10K run. We really do

want 2012 to be a bumper year for entries. So far (fingers crossed) the event has been a day when the weather has been pleasant. Watch out for the flyers; contact the school ([email protected]) or via the website:

www.barton10k.org.uk and Runners World (hyper link available at the

barton10k website).

Best wishes Ann Payne

History Artefacts Appeal

Within the History department we have been developing artefact boxes to accompany the topics taught across the key stages. We have been extremely fortunate to have had such kind donations from Mr Sibley (father of Luke Sibley 8SD) but we do still have some gaps in our artefact collections. Can you possibly help us by donating any of the objects below?

If you think you can help us please either call the school or email me at: [email protected] Miss R Truscott Leader of History

In last terms newsletter we shared the sad news of Mrs Payne’s decision to step down as Headteacher at the end of the summer term. Over the last few months we have been advertising for a successor and I can announce an appointment has been made.

The panel was very impressed with the number and quality of candidates who applied with four candidates in particular standing out. Interviews were held last week over two days and included a gruelling series of tasks to test their professional skills and personal qualities.

The candidate who was appointed by the panel performed consistently well over all these tasks and will be a huge asset to the school is Mr Steve Kelly. He is currently Head of Cedars Primary School in Newport Pagnell and has an outstanding record in delivering and sustaining high quality teaching and learning. Mr Kelly will be introducing himself to all parents and pupils in due course.

Any change can be a challenging time. However, the Governing Body is confident it has appointed an exceptional leader who will help Arnold go from strength to strength. Overtime we hope you will see this confidence translate into improved outcomes for your children.

ICT News Safer Internet Day

In February for Safer Internet day Kevin Gourlay worked with a year 8 group of pupils through the presentation ‘Safe and Secure’ in collaboration with ‘Child Net’. A group of year 6 in the afternoon of safer Internet Day took part in an ‘E-ngage-Live’ session as mentors for ‘Silver Surfers’. This linked well to our community project with Barton-le-Clay library.

‘Ride a Bike’ cycle courses

Would you like your child to complete a ‘Ride a bike’ cycle course at Arnold Academy?

The course consists of four two hour sessions and is held in an area near to the location of the academy. Qualified instructors will teach the children to improve their safety awareness as an “on road” cyclist and help them to get the most out of cycling.

All four sessions must be attended as the learning skills build up on the previous day’s training.

The proposed courses are from July 23rd-26th There is a possibility of further dates becoming available if there is high interest.

Group A – 10am-12pm

Group B – 1pm-3pm

The course is free, however, we will take a deposit of £20 to confirm attendance which will be refunded when the course is completed.

If you are interested in your child completing the Summer holiday courses, please send a note of interest to school marked for the attention of Miss Paranihi.

Music Soirees

This term we have held several small concerts featuring pupils of one instrumental teacher at a time. So far pupils of the drum teacher and singing teacher have performed to their parents and friends. Due to

the large number of beginners this year, nearly all the pupils had never performed in front of anyone before. They were very nervous but everyone performed splendidly and their parents were very proud.

On Thursday 29th March it is the turn of our guitar pupils. Parents and friends of the pupils performing are invited to simply turn up at 7pm. The concert will be held in the academy’s Learning Resource centre near the music room with entry via the rear automatic doors. Next term pupils of our other instrumental teachers will be holding “mini concerts”. Dates and times of these “soirees” are yet to be confirmed.

Instrumental Lessons

We are delighted to have so many pupils currently learning. There will be some spaces for new pupils at the start of next term. We can offer tuition in the following instruments:- Violin Viola Cello Guitar (acoustic & electric) Flute Clarinet Oboe Saxophone Trumpet Cornet Horn Trombone Piano Singing Drums We have some instruments available to loan but in most cases pupils are expected to provide their own instruments usually by renting from one of the local music shops. Lessons cost £10 each week for an individual lesson and £6 for a shared lesson. We guarantee 10 lessons a term. If you would like to arrange lessons for your child please contact me for an application form. C D Cadd Leader of Music [email protected]

National Science Week

The theme for this year was ‘Our World in Motion’. To support this theme activities in science included designing & testing dragsters and balloon racers. Designing and making a model turbine and crumple zones in cars. Some classes also had a workshop with a presenter from The Institute of Physics and all pupils were again able to watch a presentation from Stuart Short - ‘The Animal Man’ Miss McGill Science Department

ARNOLD ACADEMY PAGE 8

The Animal Man Visit When the Animal Man came to school he had a snake with him and you could stroke the snake. He was called ‘Slither’, the snake was soft to touch. The Animal Man, called Stu, said when you bite your nails you are eating a snake because your nails are made of the same stuff as snake skin. Yuk! The snake was the best animal. I also liked the owl because he flew into his cage. The owl was called ‘Mischief’ and was a barn owl and was white with brown spots. It was awesome! By Chloe Smith 5DP

Animal Man Visit

When the animal man, called Stu, came to school he brought lots of different animals such as an armadillo, meerkat, scorpion, snake, chinchilla, tarantula, owl and a giant African snail. My favourite animal was the bearded dragon called Bruce. We all had to say ‘g’day Bruce’ because he came from Australia. You can’t see their ears but there are two little holes at the side of their face, they eat crickets and they have a light sensitive spot on the top of their head. By Millie Connolly 5DP

The Animal Man The thing I liked best about the Animal Man was when the owl came out of its cage and pooped in the poop tray. Everyone laughed. By Keon Maxon & Cameron Wheeler 5DP

Mrs Cooper’s 7X1 English group have been working on their descriptive writing skills, each producing a mini-saga of 50 words or less. The class voted anonymously for their favourites and below are the top two, who we entered into the competition…

Demon Day By Ryan Branford

A storm was brewing. Shrouds of darkness suffocated the

land. Water turned to blood, while blood flowed like water.

Demons plummeted from the skies, raged over the hills

and rose from the valleys. King Edward III and his fellow

warriors were faced with their biggest challenge; would

they succeed?

Roman Voyage

By Natalie Turner

I rowed to the thud of the booming drum, my chains

rattling. I told myself it would be over soon. Suddenly,

a great crash arose from the front, wooden beams

caved in and water rose. I gargled what I thought was

my last breath and my head sunk under.

YOUR GOVERNORS NEED YOU – PART II

Following my brief note in the February newsletter I have renewed my pledge to fill vacant positions on the Governing Body. As I was singularly unsuccessful last time my end of term report states “must try harder”. So here goes.

I am sure that many parents have from time to time wondered how you could connect better or know more about your child’s school, or wished you could “put something back” or “help in some way”. Becoming a governor of Arnold is one such way. No previous skills are required; you don’t actually need to have any connection with the school or knowledge of the education system. A desire to be involved is sufficient and once involved I am sure you will find it rewarding. I don’t want to produce a dry job description so over the next few issues of the newsletter I will set out briefly some of the things the governing body have been doing which will hopefully debunk a few myths and attract a few of you to at least come and have a taste of what is involved. Just as a taster and as Rhys our chair has indicated earlier in this issue, we have appointed a new Headteacher of Arnold Academy for September 2012. Clearly we don’t want to be doing that every year but in terms of making a difference to your child’s education – things don’t get much bigger, and being part of a school community looking at such a bright future really is exciting. If you would like to know more, please make yourself known to the school office (01582 616400 or [email protected] ) and I would be pleased to speak to you informally and let you know a bit more about how you could get involved. I look forward to speaking with you.

Hello parents and pupils of Arnold Academy, I am Laura Palmer, the newly appointed school games activator for your school. I work on behalf of the Redborne School Sport partnership. My role is to liaise with the schools to increase participation levels in recreational and competitive sport whilst making it fun for all. The partnership has employed sport coaches to go into Arnold Academy to develop specific skills and game play. So far Arnold Academy have received 6 weeks of street dance, basketball and 4 weeks of table tennis coaching. In early February Arnold Academy held a table tennis tournament for Year 7/8 boys and girls and invited Robert Bloomfield Academy and Holywell Middle School. The sport leaders were trained by the partnership to officiate in pairs at the event. They did a fantastic job, well done and thank you to all the leaders who helped out on the day. The boys however excelled greatly at the event and gained first place, qualifying them into level 3 of the national school games which was the county finals. This was held at Bedford Athletics Stadium and both the boys and girls teams from Arnold attended. Ramsey Manor Lower School, Silsoe Lower School and Sundon Lower School all recently attended the Year 4 Hi 5 netball transition festival which was held at Arnold. I would like to thank those leaders who were involved in the Hi 5 netball, you all demonstrate great leadership qualities! Thank you to all the staff at Arnold Academy for all your support. There will be many more festivals for you all to be involved with and I will update you in the summer term with other activities that have taken place. Laura School Games Activator

PE News

The second half of the spring term has been an exciting and busy time for extra curricular PE. Numerous county tournaments have taken place with some exceptional individual and team performances. Congratulations to the Year 6 Rugby squad for their excellent efforts in reaching the quarter-finals of the area event. The boys were fantastic and suffered only one opening defeat in their route to the quarter-finals. Despite playing some excellent rugby a hard-fought game saw Alban progress at our expense. A huge well done to all the boys below: Football

Year 8 have had an injury-hit season which saw us lose to Newnham in the county cup previously. Having reached the final for the last 3 years the boys were extremely disappointed but have bounced back in excellent fashion. With new faces coming into the team and many players missing, all of the squad made an excellent contribution in a game against Parkfields. It was unfortunately a game that we had to settle for just a point in as we shared the spoils with a 0-0 draw. The boys can now look forward to their final league game against Robert Bloomfield in which a victory would give us a chance of winning this year’s league. The year 7 squad meanwhile have continued their impressive form from previous seasons. After winning 3-2 at Alameda the team travelled to Marston Vale where they faced a testing game and went on to win 5-1.The team will now face Robert Bloomfield in a game which could determine this year’s league winners.

ARNOLD ACADEMY PAGE 19

Page 20: Easter Newsletter

The year 6 squad have had a mixed seasons of emotions so far. After reaching the county cup final following a fantastic away win at Lincroft in the semi-finals. The boys have played 2 away games at Etonbury and Marston Vale despite having the greater share of play, the boys have gone on to lose both by narrow margins. Both scorelines have not reflected the matches themselves and the boys must now pick themselves up again for their last league game against Robert Bloomfield and of course the county cup final which will take pace after the Easter holidays. We all very much look forward to that final in which we face Linslade school. A vast amount of year 5 football has also taken place this term. Following their fantastic victory at the Robert Bloomfield 6-a-side festival where the boys didn’t even concede a goal, the team went into a tournament on grass on Friday 16th March. Despite playing some excellent football it turned out to be just one of those days for our team. In our three league fixtures on the day we dominated the majority of play but ended losing 2 and drawing 1. It really wasn’t a reflection of the way in which we played and the boys were extremely disappointed. Those boys who have shown great commitment in attending regular training but have not so far represented the school will also get the chance to represent the school in two 7-a-side matches at Arnold in the last week of term. This has been organised with Woodland Academy and such is the standard of players in this year group is that we will again field two very strong teams on the day. Good luck to them and we hope they enjoy the games on the night. Girls Football KS2

From very early in the Autumn term, it has been clear that there was great enthusiasm from year 5 girls for the formation of a football team, something that has not happened for a number of years. This enthusiasm has been maintained throughout the winter months, with a squad of up to 14 girls practicing every Tuesday. Mr Pollard then had the very difficult job of selecting a team of eight to

represent Arnold at the Annual KS2 tournament on March 19th. The team had a great time but sadly came away without a win. Two games were very narrowly lost 0-1 and the third was a 0-2 defeat to Parkfields, a very strong

ARNOLD ACADEMY PAGE 20

Page 21: Easter Newsletter

PAGE 21

side who went on to win the whole tournament. This performance was certainly no disgrace, particularly as all the other sides had mainly year 6 players, and I am sure the girls will come back strongly - and more experienced - next year.

Netball

On the 29th February the school sports partnership hosted a netball festival held at Arnold Academy. The year 8 netball team were involved in the afternoon and took on the role as leaders, directing the lower school teams whilst also organising and umpiring. The tournament was a great success and the girls showed true leadership qualities. Well done to the year 8 Netball team for your participation and enthusiasm in helping to ensure the festival was a success.

The year 7&8 netball teams have been back in action this term. Training once again commenced every Friday lunch to prepare the teams for the County Tournament held at the Bunyan Centre Bedford on the 16th March.

The year 7 team played St Andrews in their first game and won. The second game saw them take on Bedford girls school and unfortunately the girls were defeated in this game. They then went on to play Challney girls school and the end score line finished with a draw. With one win, one loss and a draw the

team didn’t make it through to the next stage of the tournament. Well done to the team for all your efforts: Louise Miller, Francesca Powell, Lucy Treacher, Charlotte Eagles, Alana Jefcoate, Millie Jennings, Kelsey Martin, Libbie Orsborn and Aoife McDonagh.

The year 8 teams played 2 teams in the round stages of the tournament firstly beating St Andrews followed by a loss to Bedford girls school. They did make it through to the quarter finals stage against opponents Lea Manor school. The girls fought hard in this match and showed a great desire to win but narrowly lost this game by one goal. Again their were some outstanding performances from many of the players: Daniela D’isola, Abby Fraser, Ria Pachnanda, Rebekah James, Jessica Pitts, Joanna Saunders, Jessica Jones, Ruby Wadsworth and Sara Marshall.

KS2 Netball

Arnold were entered in the Bedfordshire Schools County netball tournament on Tuesday 6th March 2012. The tournament team included: Sienna Taylor, Sarah McMenamy, Holly Luff, Ellie Dudley, Holly Byron, Anais Stichbury & Rosie Jennings.

Page 22: Easter Newsletter

PAGE 22

The girls played outstandingly in the tournament winning all of their 6 pool games against Bedford B, Hillborough, Lincroft, Bedford Modern, Robert Bloomfield A and St Andrews. This was a fantastic confidence booster for the girls going into the quarter finals and their hard work to reach this far is a credit to them. The team fought hard in the quarter finals, however Marston had better goal accuracy in this match and this is where the team left the competition. All of the girls have developed excellent netball skills over this school year and the tournament was a fantastic experience for them to enhance their abilities and strengthen as a team. I am very proud of the girls and their achievement and wish them the best for their netball in the future.

Results of the Year 5 netball county finals.

The finals were held at Bedford Girls on March 22nd 2012, the girls played fantastically with outstanding results below:

Won v Priory 8-0 Won v Lincroft 6-1

Drew with Bedford Girls 1-1 Won v Linslade 9-0

The results were based on points and we drew with Bedford girls overall so the final results were determined by the amount of goals scored. There was a difference of one goal between Arnold and Bedford Girls and unfortunately for the team, Bedford held that extra goal advantage. This meant that the girls final placing in the Bedfordshire county tournament was runner up which considering they didn’t lose any games in the whole season as well as in the tournament is a really outstanding achievement. I am very proud of the girls and it has been a pleasure to see them develop their skills as a team and as individuals.

Well done girls and best wishes for your netball in the future.

Anais Stichbury, Rosie Jennings, Morgan Bunyan, Jessica Miles, Molly Gill, Ella Slater and Charlotte Smith.

Table Tennis

Both the year 8 boys and girls qualified for the county table tennis finals after winning the local tournament. The finals was a great celebration of a number of different sports and took place in various locations around Bedford. It was opened with a big opening ceremony in which various pupils from different schools sang and performed different skills.

Page 23: Easter Newsletter

ARNOLD ACADEMY PAGE 23

Both teams done well on the day and finished in 3rd position in their rounds:

Basketball

Both the year 7 and 8 girls basketball teams qualified for the county finals after winning all their league games. The year 7 team played a finals games at the beginning of this term against Alameda and narrowly won the games after 10 minutes of extra time.

The year 8 girls played in the county finals Streetfield, Westfield and Denbigh. The girls played outstandingly in all games winning each game by a large amount of baskets. During these matches all their hard work and training paid off with the team scoring the majority of their points through lay ups by Hannah Underwood, Jessica Jones and Jessica Pitts. After successfully winning their pool the team progressed to the finals where they played Lea Manor. The final game was a showcase of the team’s talents. The Arnold girls outdid Lea Manor in both attacking and defending and were by far the better team. The girls pace and speed was fantastic and again the shooting and rebounding was a strength of the teams performance. Sara Marshall re-bounded many shots and passed the ball on quickly. The final score was 14-2 to Arnold and so the girls are now the county champions, a fantastic achievement.

On the day there was a county basketball scout and he chose four girls from Arnold to represent the county team; Jessica Jones, Jessica Pitts,

Sara Marshall and Hannah Underwood.

Huge congratulations to the Arnold Academy County Basketball Champions:

Year 7

The year 7 basketball team got to showcase their basketball skills a week after the year 8 teams success. They played a total of six games on the day and were successful in beating Lincroft and Streetfield but were defeated in the other four games. The girls played well but it took them several games to properly warm up and get focused, this ultimately cost them. They finished in 5th place overall. Again the team did fight hard and there were some fantastic individual performances. Charlotte Eagles defence was superb and Aoife McDonagh, Kelsey Martin and Millie Jennings were fantastic when attacking, Francesca Powell was great at retrieving the rebounds.

Well done to the team it’s a massive achievement to reach the county stages: Charlotte Eagles, Aoife McDonagh, Aoife McDonagh, Kelsey Martin, Millie Jennings, Bella Nardi, Libbie Orsborn, Lucy Treacher, Francesca Powell and Alana Jefcoate.

Leadership Both year 8 boys and girls have been working hard on their

leadership unit this term and will be ready to develop their leadership skills during the summer term in assisting our local feeder schools. As can be seen it has been another busy term for the sports pupils of Arnold Academy with some truly fantastic team and individual performances. Once again well done to all those pupils involved. We look forward to our athletics, rounders and cricket leagues commencing in the summer term. Miss J Cooke Mr K Tfifha Miss D Paranihi

Spend and Raise: Raise more with our eStore Do you frequently shop online for groceries, gifts, books, clothes, toys, holidays, hotels, mobile phone contracts, insurance or just order a pizza or rent a movie on a Friday night? If so, you can now raise a commission for us when you shop online with 1000 retailers from the convenience of your own home at no extra cost to you. How does it work? In order to earn a commission for our cause with your online shopping, simply click through to a retailer’s website via an image/text link on our eStore. This will show a short interval page which tells you that you’re now leaving Spend and Raise and entering the retailer’s website where you can browse and shop as usual. If a purchase is made, a commission is generated and given back to our eStore. To find out how much commission you can earn for each retailer, visit the ‘Retailer A-Z’ on the site. Will it really not cost me more? Shopping via the eStore won’t cost you a penny more—in fact, you can often even save money by checking out the ‘Today’s offers’ section which the Spend and Raise team update all the time with offers such as free delivery, 3 for 2, 10% off etc. Do I have to create a supporter’s account and log in every time to earn a commission? No, you don’t have to create a supporter account to raise a commission. By vis-iting our eStore, clicking through and purchasing from the retailer, the sale will be tracked and Spend and Raise will identify then allocate the commission to us. There are some great benefits when you log in to your supporter’s account before making a purchase: you’ll be able to track your purchases in your account and also have your name appear on the ‘List of latest fundraisers’ (you can tick and un-tick this option in your account’s settings any time). You can also tick a box to receive the Spend and Raise weekly newsletter with offers and other important news. I forgot my password—help! Please use the password link that appears when you hover over ‘Supporter Login’ which will send you an email with a link to change the password again.
