The first quarter of the year ended with encouraging new traffic records. Over the first three months, the airport served 13.6 million passengers and recorded 85,000 flight movements, up 8% and 6.6% respectively, compared with the same period last year.

In addition, there have been signs that the decline in cargo volume is continuing to slow down, casting a positive outlook for the cargo performance in the coming quarter. Cargo tonnage in the first quarter of 2012 declined marginally by 1.5% over the same period in 2011.

According to the preliminary air traffic report recently announced by Airports Council International, Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is ranked among the world’s top 10 airports. Meanwhile, we remain the world’s busiest cargo hub, having surpassed Memphis International Airport for the second consecutive year. In fact, HKIA is one of a handful of airports in the world with both passenger and cargo throughput entering the top 10 list.

Although the airport is getting busier by the day, we are committed to operating with the same high service standards. As a result of our continued efforts to enhance services, we have notched up a remarkable number of regional and international best airport awards – up to 50 by 2011. Recently, for the seventh year in a row, we clinched the prestigious Air Cargo Excellence Award, which recognises outstanding performance, value, facilities and regulatory operations of airports in handling air cargo.

Our achievements reflect the enormous efforts and collaboration of the 65,000-strong airport staff. In the eleventh Customer Service Excellence Programme recently held at the airport, over 100 airport colleagues were complimented on providing exemplary service.

I am grateful that so many of the airport community members are committed to going the extra mile to serve the passengers. Actions like repairing a doll for a child, translating Chinese phrases for a Russian-speaking tourist on his way to the Mainland, or making special food arrangements for senior passengers may all be simple things, but they are heartwarming and have a great impact on people’s perception of our airport. It is these heartfelt touches that make us one of the finest airports in the world. I sincerely extend my gratitude to all the winners who are role models of outstanding customer service.

I am honoured to be a member of this extraordinary airport community. With HKIA consistently performing up to the highest standards, we will continue to contribute to making Hong Kong an even more welcoming destination for visitors across the world.

In over 30 years working in the aviation industry, I’ve never found a dull moment.

TAKING ON A NEW CHALLENGEFor almost 17 years, Howard Eng lent a steady hand in managing the vast operations of Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) as Executive Director, Airport Operations. Before leaving to take up a new role in Toronto, Canada, he sat down with HKIA News, sharing how the world’s finest airport has provided him with a world of possibilities and a wealth of fond memories to last a lifetime.

As someone fascinated with airplanes since childhood, it seems fitting that Howard Eng would make his mark in the aviation industry. From his early days working at the Edmonton International Airport in Canada to overseeing the operations and development of HKIA, Howard established a solid track record in all facets of airport operations. It’s not an exaggeration to say that he shared the same success story with this airport.

“Over the past 17 years, I have witnessed the growth of HKIA from its construction to becoming one of the finest airports in the world. For me, it was like raising a child, witnessing its birth and nurturing it to become a successful teenager. Not many of us in the aviation industry get the chance to experience this and I am honoured to have been a part of HKIA’s growth,” Howard says.

Crediting an ever-changing business environment and a strong sense of camaraderie, Howard regards the aviation industry as one of the most satisfying and rewarding industries to build a career in. “The constant change is the uniqueness of this industry,” referring to the vicissitudes experienced by the industry throughout the years, from fuel crises and the SARS pandemic to the tightening of aviation security. What helped the industry and the airport to weather these challenges was teamwork.

“Whenever anyone needs help, the whole aviation community always pulls together with a ‘can-do’ spirit to work

things out. In over 30 years working in the aviation industry, I’ve never found a dull moment.”

However, managing one of the world’s busiest airports with a round-the-clock operation can be excruciatingly stressful. Thus, Howard emphasises the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and work-life balance. He relaxes by spending quality time with his family and engaging in physical activities such as hiking and playing golf. He is also an avid reader who likes to immerse himself in the exciting plot of a great book.

After a stellar career at the Airport Authority (AA), Howard began his new challenge as President and CEO of the Greater Toronto Airport Authority in March.

Looking back at his career with the AA, Howard reveals that he will miss the people and the friendships he developed along the way the most. “The most wonderful moments during my time in HKIA are the collaboration between the AA and its business partners working towards a single goal. The fulfillment of seeing the integrated efforts and respect of each of the 65,000-strong airport community in making HKIA one of the world’s finest airports is second to none.”

Howard is grateful that he always received the full support from the Board of Directors and the entire AA staff in addressing various issues at the airport. “I would like to thank them for their support and helping mould my career as a well-rounded aviation industry professional.”

GREEN FOOTSTEPSThe AA continued to foster a green lifestyle among its staff by participating in the annual Walk for the Environment 2012 on 18 March. As a sponsor of the event, 22 AA staff and family members enjoyed healthy exercise while contributing to a meaningful cause by hiking through the five kilometre route from the Ma On Shan Country Park Barbecue Site to Sai Kung Po Lo Che.

Organised by The Conservancy Association, the event aims to raise awareness on environmental protection and the conservation of Hong Kong’s natural and cultural heritage.

GOING GREEN|

HKIA boosted its green track record by winning the “Best of Eco-life Awards: Green Building” in the U Green Awards 2011 in recognition of its environmentally friendly architecture and facilities. Organised by U Magazine for the third time, the accolade was open to public nomination across several green categories. HKIA outshone 12 other nominees for the award with over 40,000 votes to take home the honour.

Among the airport’s features recognised for the award included exceptional sound insulation, light, ventilation and air quality. The AA’s initiatives on introducing LED lights at the terminals and the use of natural sunlight were also cited as outstanding green measures for energy conservation.
