What is Easter?

Easter is a very important and also the oldest Christian festival. Celebrated all over the world, Easter Commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.  For Christians, the dawn of Easter Sunday with its message of new life is the high point of the Christian year.

Brief Story About Easter?

Easter has been called a moveable feast because it doesn't fall on a set date every year, as most holidays do. Instead, Christian churches in the West celebrate Easter on the first Sunday following the full moon after the vernal equinox on March 21. Therefore, Easter is observed anywhere between March 22 and April 25 every year. Orthodox Christians use the Julian calendar to calculate when Easter will occur and typically celebrate the holiday a week or two after the Western churches, which follow the Gregorian calendar.

Where Does the Name Easter Come from?

Pagan traditions give us the English word "Easter" which comes from the word "Eostre". The Anglo-Saxon word for April was "Eostre-monath" (the month of openings). However, it should be remembered that Christians celebrated the resurrection of Christ long before the word "Easter" was used, and the word they used for the celebration was "Pascha", which is derived from and linked to the Jewish festival of Passover.

Maundy ThursdayThe feast of Maundy (or Holy) Thursday solemnly commemorates the institution of the Eucharist and is the oldest of the observances peculiar to Holy Week.

Good Friday

On Good Friday Christians remember the day that Jesus was killed on the cross.  Good Friday is a sad day and churches never have flowers or decorations on this day. The church is left dark and there is just a simple cross on the altar. It is known as Good Friday because Christians believe that Jesus gave up his life for the good of everyone.

Easter Day?

Easter is observed on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25. The commonly stated rule, that Easter Day is the first Sunday after the full moon that occurs next after the vernal equinox, is somewhat misleading because it is not a precise statement of the actual ecclesiastical rules.

How the Day is Decided?

• Easter must be on a Sunday;

• This Sunday must follow the 14th day of the paschal moon;

• The paschal moon is that of which the 14th day (full moon) falls on or next follows the day of the vernal equinox;

• The equinox is fixed in the calendar as March 21.
