engaging, Hands-on experiences Make science cool for students

Science is vital to advances in technolo-gy and medicine, as well as the driving force behind the newest gadgets, yet

it remains one of the most stigmatized areas of study in the United States.

Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) jobs are the fastest-growing occupations in the United States, outpacing others at a rate of nearly 2-to-1 according to the U.S. Department of Com-merce. By 2018, it’s anticipated that there will be more than 1.2 million job openings for scientists, doctors, software developers and engineers, based on statistics from the De-partment of Labor. At the same time, there will be a shortage of qualified graduates to fill these positions.

Perhaps it’s because when most students think of science, they imagine a room filled with Bunsen burners, volumes of textbooks and reclusive scientists. But these days, sci-ence education is exhilarating and engaging.

Educators from the elementary to post-graduate levels must provide stimulating and fulfilling learning experiences that serve to ignite students’ passion for science. This pas-sion is ultimately what drives them to explore

careers rooted in STEM and fill the demand for an educated workforce. And once they’re in the classroom, we need to ensure they receive the best possible education.

For example, job opportunities in forensic science are expected to increase by nearly 20 percent over the next 10 years. At Grand Canyon University, we just added a state-of-the-art DNA lab. As part of our forensic science program, students are tasked with collecting, extracting and analyzing real DNA, much like they will be asked to do in the workplace. We’re also helping local high school students explore the science of fo-rensics through our annual Forensic Science Day, where students explore areas of DNA analysis and other detail-oriented fields in laboratory science or criminal justice.

Through engaging and applied experienc-es like these, educators can show students how science is relevant to them and inspire youth to pursue careers in these vital fields. With a concerted effort, Arizona’s educators can reinvigorate young minds, make science cool again, and prepare aspiring scientists to fill the demand for some of the highest-paying jobs.

harlem globetrotters star visits Liberty Arts AcAdemy to Deliver Anti-Bullying ProgramL iberty Arts Academy hosted an

anti-bullying campaign featuring Anthony “Buckets” Blakes from

the legendary Harlem Globetrotters on February 5. Blakes, a native of Phoenix, delivered the ‘ABCs of Bullying Prevention,’ the team’s new community outreach program. “Being a native of Phoenix, it’s always a virtuous feeling to return home and share some wisdom with the students. Especially, when it comes to our ‘ABC’s of Bullying Prevention Program’, in which we, as human beings, and the Harlem Globetrotters want all children to learn in a worry-free environment,” said Blakes. The Globetrotters, in conjunction with the National Campaign to Stop Violence (NCSV), developed the program to teach children how to support one another and help put an end to bullying. The program, designed to reach 6 to 12-year-old children, focuses on the “ABCs” of bullying prevention: Action, Bravery and Compassion. Blakes used this platform to discuss with students how they can use these every day to stop bullying. Using the idea of teamwork, central to the Harlem Globetrotters’ thrilling live exhibitions, Blakes demonstrated the importance of teamwork in bullying prevention. “Bullying prevention—I can’t think of a better way to present such a serious and important message to our students here at Liberty Arts Academy than through the greatest entertainers in the world, the HarIem Globetrotters,” said Darwin Russell, assistant school leader. Mr. Russell worked to bring the program to LAA, which was one of two Charter schools in Arizona chosen to participate in the anti-bullying program. In addition, LAA families and friends were able to purchase discount tickets to the

Harlem Globetrotters’ appearance at the US Airways Arena on Feb. 9.

Liberty Arts Academy is a tuition-free public charter school in Mesa serving students in grades K-8. The school also offers a kinder-readiness program for three-and four-year-old children. For more information, please visit libertyartsacademy.com

The ‘ABCs of Bullying Prevention Program’ focuses on Action, Bravery and Compassion and teaches students how to use teamwork to prevent bullying.

DRama teaCHeRbaRbaRa yOuKeRShow long have you been head of the drama Club? 12 yearswhat made you want to be a part of the drama Club and were you in drama when you were in school? I was very shy as an elementary student, but when I was in high school I found away to come out of my shell. Drama provided a way to put myself out there. You aren’t you, you become the character you are playing. I wanted to pass this revolution on to the students at CEE. Many shy students have been in our drama club over the years and to see the transformation is awesome. As the art teacher at CEE the designing of the sets is a passion. I choose a play when I can envision the set. It all works together.what was your favorite subject in school? Art and Englishwhat are some of the things that you can do with your students? The first semester we have what we call Drama School where we learn staging, memorizing and projection. We play many games which help with these

areas. In October, for our World’s Fair, the actors perform 10-15 mini plays that they direct, act and make all their sets, props, and costumes. This activity helps to prepare them for our main production in May. what is your favorite movie of all time? what is your favorite current movie?I’m not a huge movie fan, but still if you were to ask me about plays I would have a hard time choosing. I love musicals, Wicked is a favorite and I just saw Peter Pan with Kathy Rigby it was awesome, and then there was Mama Mia, I loved that too! I guess you could say its in my blood, I love Broadway Productions, I recently went to New York and saw Chicago. I loved it. did you want to be an actress when you were growing up? What kid doesn’t, but as a young child I was way too shy, but I am so thankful for my high school experiences.

the ImportanCe of aCademIC engagement durIng summer break

Kids look forward to summer as a wel-comed break from the ole’ routine and a chance to spend time with friends.

However, summer break is also a time that kids NEED to stay academically engaged.

Let’s look at the issue more closely and see how parents can keep kids plugged into the academic world over the summer.

why Is aCademIC engagement In the summer Important?synaptIC ConneCtIons Our brains need regular stimulation and en-gagement to continue to build and maintain strong synaptic connections between neu-rons. While there are some savant counter-examples, the majority of us need to keep doing something in order to improve and not slip backward.

beComIng an “expert” In his book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell describes how research and examination of case studies (like Bill Gates, elite violinists, and The Beatles) reveal we need approxi-mately 10,000 hours of practice to achieve true expertise.

Once a musician has enough ability to get into a top music school, the thing that distinguishes one performer from another is how hard he or she works. That’s it. ~Malcolm Gladwell

Kids are no exception. If Johnny struggles with math, he is likely behind his age group in

relative mastery hours. With a two-month break, he falls even further behind. Summer offers time to accumu-late experiential hours toward mastery. There is even time to fill deficits not possible during the hectic school year.

gettIng Into CollegeImprove college applications by: studying for SATs or AIMS, taking a class toward high school graduation and/or collegiate pre-requisites, learning a new skill like computer programming or digital art design, or improv-ing writing skills through workshop.

how Can I keep my kId aCademI-Cally engaged In the summer?summer sChool ClassesCourses are often less crowded and assign-ments more condensed, allowing students to: catch-up, stay engaged, and get ahead.

Be sure to look at what the local community college has to offer! Most credits can transfer toward a future 4-year degree.

aCademIC summer Camps or summer programs

Academic summer programs are terrific for keeping kids academically engaged,

and often times without their realizing it! When do normal K-12 students learn about the engineering be-hind building a robot? Likely never!

But in summer programs, kids gain valuable hands-on experience learning how things work, interacting with

college profes- sors, and meeting other great kids. Note: Also a rich source for future letters of recommendation!

tutorIngMany parents report significant gains in knowledge, understanding, and comfort levels after summer tutoring. From in-home to in-center, from private to group, do a little research and see what is the best fit for your child and his/her situation.

parent-dIreCted projeCtsDesign projects, experiments, and investiga-tory activities to keep your kids academically engaged at home! Search through the pleth-ora of books by subject and grade level from a local library or bookstore. Consider teaming up with another family too. Practice isn’t the thing you do once you’re good. It’s the thing you do that makes you good.” ~ Malcolm Gladwell
