Ask specific questions to get more information What did you learn in (science, math, etc.) today? What book are you reading now? How is it? What

do you like about it? Who did you eat lunch with today? Did you meet anyone new today? You don’t have to ask all of these things every day,

but make it a habit to ask

Turn off the electronics and read You can have your child read out loud to you Every student should have a book Use close-captioning on your television when

watching it and your student will be reading without even thinking

This is important to their success in school – it needs to be important at home

Try stating the goal in writing. (Is it a short-term or long-term goal?) e.g. “I will learn a new word every day.”

Set a time frame to accomplish the goal, e.g. “I will learn seven words in a week.”

Help your child visualize accomplishing his/her goal.

When the time frame has passed, help your child determine if he or she has reached the goal.

Talk about and recognize which efforts did or did not work. (We learn from our mistakes.)

As your children learn to set short and long term goals. “Doing better in school” is an example of one abstract

goal that your child might choose. Help turn this abstract goal into something more concrete by suggesting that a way to do better in school might be to make a “B” on the next math test.

“Helping out more at home” is another abstract goal that your child can turn into a concrete goal by taking the trash out every week.

You can't fight (or win) every conflict with your kid.

Will this battle fight itself? Can you live with it?

Being firm creates a strong foundation in your relationship with your child.

Boundaries are meant to expand. As your child grows, the boundaries will too.

If you set limits with your child in a consistent, positive way, eventually your child will internalize your expectations.

These guidelines will help him to get along successfully in life.
