We have learned that the sun provides the Earth with light, heat and energy.

The Earth needs the sun.

We also know that it takes the Earth 365 days or one year to travel all the way around the Sun.

What are the seasons?

But did you know that the Earth and the sun effect the seasons?

The seasons are created because the Earth is tilted.

When part of the Earth is tilted away from the sun that part of the Earth is experiencing winter.

wintersummerDuring the winter the temperature is much colder. The sun is not giving as much heat.

Also during the winter the days are shorter. There is less light reaching those parts of the Earth.

When part of the Earth is tilted towards the sun that part of the Earth is experiencing summer.

During the summer the temperature is much warmer. The sun is giving off a lot of heat.

Also during the summer the days are longer. There is more light reaching those parts of the Earth.

In the spring the Earth is moving around the sun, and the tilted part is slowly starting to face the sun.

The Earth in that part of the world is warming and the days are growing longer.

Plants start to grow.In the Autumn or Fall the Earth is movingaround the sun, and the tilted part is slowly starting to face away from the sun.

The Earth in that part of the world is slowly getting colder and the days are growing shorter. Plants start to die.

Today we learned that the way the Earth tilts towards or away from the sun creates the seasons on Earth.
