This is explored through Implementing Early Learning Foundations. The standards are a guide for planning learning experiences and checking day to day practice against what is known to be effective for childrenʼs learning and development. While the ELFs are not an assessment tool, standards do help us be more intentional about the kinds of experiences and support that will help children have the skill levels necessary for a good start in Kindergarten—and beyond. Being clear on what the standards are, how to use the ELF document and the practical application of daily planning gets us started in a positive direction. Another way to look at standards is as a lighthouse to help guide our teaching and illuminate concepts that should be addressed. (Jacobs and Crowley NAEYC 2010) In order to help children be prepared for kinder- garten, we intentionally plan experiences based on their developmental level. The experiences are planned in all content areas and allow for multiple opportunities to practice and learn. One of the ways to approach this is through doing long-term studies or projects with preschool (or school-age) children. Teaching Strategies (the publishers of Creative Curriculum) among others, including the authors above (Gera Jacobs and Kathy Crowley) and the Reggio Emilia approach, outline the idea of the project as a way to provide rich learning opportunities in all areas of learning or in all of the Domains of the Early Learning Foundations. This approach to learning can be rewarding to staff and to children, and although it may take some practice to do it effectively, it is one of the best ways to help children see how content areas (domains) are connected and that learning happens across all domains. Here is some basic information about using projects and how they can support early learning standards for children. Because the children are such a part of planning and decision making, and they are the focus of learning, projects support their approaches to learning skills development. Children enjoy learning because they are naturally excited about what is taking place. Projects must be relevant and meaningful to children. The Domains of Science and My Family, My Community, My World are good sources for starting a project The project idea takes a common interest and builds on it. For example, children love to dress up and often discuss what they should wear in dramatic play. A project might be Clothes, building on their interest and the fact that most cultures recognize clothing as an important part of daily living. Seeing Science EverywhereLaunched in 2004, PNC Grow Up Great is an unprece-dented 10-year, $100 million school readiness initiativeto help prepare children from birth to age five for successin school and life. So far, PNCʼs program has contributedmore than $28 million in grants to enhance preschoolprograms, 150,000 hours in PNC employeevolunteerism, and donated more than 100,000 items. In2009 PNC began an initiative entitled Grow Up Greatwith Science. PNC has partnered with regional sciencecenters and related non-profit organizations to foster afoundation in science for preschoolers. One of theregional science centers that received a two-year grantfrom PNCʼs Grow Up Great with Science initiative wasthe Delaware Museum of Natural History. The Museumused the funding to create a preschool teacher-trainingprogram called Seeing Science Everywhere.

The Seeing Science Everywhere program teaches earlychildhood educators how to promote the process ofscientific inquiry and implement the Seeing ScienceEverywhere Resource Book in their preschoolclassrooms. The Resource Book focuses on a total of27 nature and science themes commonly used in theearly childhood classroom. Each theme is divided intocontent areas (science, math, language, art, music, movement, and social and emotional development),which are explored through a series of fun classroomactivities.

Beginning in the fall of 2010, the Delaware Museum ofNatural History will offer this training to all early child-hood educators through the Delaware Institute forExcellence in Early Childhood Education (DIEEC). TheLevel 3 training will be offered in a series of three 3-hoursessions to be held in each county. In addition toearning nine credits, each participant will receive a

complimentary copy of the Seeing Science EverywhereResource Book and a free subscription to the SeeingScience Everywhere monthly e-newsletter.

During the first session, participants will learn how topromote the process of scientific inquiry by exploring thefour seasons and weather. Each season will bethoroughly discussed as well as general weatherconditions and wind, sun, snow/ice, and rain. Session 2will focus on habitats and animals. Insects, spiders, reptiles, amphibians, backyard animals, and dinosaurswill be discussed, as well as the polar regions, oceans, the rainforest, farm life, and even the solar system. Thelast session will concentrate on how things grow. Inaddition to learning about how people grow, our fivesenses, and nutrition, teachers will learn how to investi-gate flowers, fruits, vegetables, and trees from seed toplant in the classroom.

The cost of the training will be $60 per person. It will beoffered at the Delaware Museum of Natural History onWednesdays, November 3rd , 10th , and 17th from 6:30to 9:30 p.m. Training will be offered in Kent County in thewinter of 2010 and in Sussex County in the spring of2011. See future Provider Pursuits and the DIEECwebsite for exact dates and locations.

Six training scholarships and three theme kits will begranted per county. The theme kits will include ascience center in a box and educational materials foreach of the 27 themes. The scholarships and free kitswill only be granted to ECE centers that meet specific cri-teria. Contact the DIEEC for a brochure and application. This training is made possible with funding from PNCʼsGrow Up Great with Science and support from theDelaware Institute for Excellence in Early Childhood.

Autumn is a wonderful time to begin incorporating natureand science into your environment. Using theEnvironment Rating Scales (ERS) and the DelawareStars Clarifications as a guide, you will be able to recog-nize how easy it is to include nature and science experi-ences for all children. Below are some suggestions toinclude in your Nature/Science corner and curriculum.

Infants and toddlers:• Access to some developmentally appropriate

pictures, books, or toys that represent naturerealistically.

• Choose books and toys that portray real animalsrather than cartoons or fanciful characters.

• Ask parents to donate calendars that often showphotos of nature scenes and real animals that can beused in your display.

• Opportunities to interact with nature outdoors at leasttwice a week. This could include infants feeling thegrass or showing toddlers birds in a nearby tree.

• Daily experiences with living plants or animalsindoors such as an aquarium or pointing out thesquirrels through a window. Make it commonpractice to use everyday events to teach childrenabout nature and science talk about the weather orthe falling rain.

Preschool children:• Access to many developmentally appropriate games,

materials, or activities. Include at least 3 examplesfrom 3 of the following categories: collections ofnatural objects such as seashells or leaves; livingthings to care for and observe such as plants or fish;,nature/science books, games, or toys such assequencing cards that portray the progression of atadpole turning into a frog; and nature/science

activities such as cooking or experimenting withsinking and floating objects in the water table.

• Since family child care professionals would need toprovide appropriate materials for multiple agegroups, there should be 9 different examples ofappropriate nature/science materials from at leastthree of the above categories accessible topreschoolers and school-agers. The only differenceis that instead of activities, the last category isnature/science tools such as magnets or magnifyingglasses.

• Organize materials, be sure they are in goodcondition.

• Encourage children to bring in natural things to sharewith the other children, such as adding to anon-going leaf collection throughout the season.

• Use everyday events to teach children about natureand science such as discussing the change ofseasons or flying kites on a windy day.

• Offer nature/science activities every two (2) weekssuch as cooking or doing crayon rubbings of leaves.

• Provide books and pictures to extend the hands-onexperiences that are occurring.

School-age children:• Access to a variety of science/nature materials. • Become involved in science and nature activities

such as feeding classroom pets or watering plants ona weekly basis.

• Encourage questions about science or naturalphenomena and then help the children find answers.

• Introduce new concepts based on the childrenʼsinterests such as endangered species or waterconservation.

• Take field trips that are science-based such as tripsto a planetarium or natural history museum.
