Early Childhood School Program Academics Academic The purpose of the Early Childhood curriculum is to promote each child’s intellectual, emotional and social development in a stimulating and nurturing environment. Students are provided challenging activities and hands- on learning experiences that foster motivation and a positive attitude toward learning. Students will learn in the areas of language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education, art and music.

Curriculum Goals AISE has identified curriculum goals considered essential to the learning process of its students. The goals are set in order to acquire a range of thinking skills, comprehension, interpretation, extrapolation, and synthesis. AISE draws from the best practices of American stateside school districts, as well as Common Core Standards, to offer students a quality American program for students to successfully transfer back to the United States or any international private school worldwide.

The curriculum is organized by standards. Each standard is defined by:

• Essential Understandings • Essential Knowledge • Essential Skills

Page 13: Early Childhood Center - American International School in ... · Ms. Heba Adel KGI-D Ms. Heather Garcia Ms. Sara Nada KGI-E Ms. Ashli Dokhan Ms. Suzette Michael KGI- F Ms. Lynn Brzys

Grading

Grades for students are reported every nine weeks. Teachers give narrative accounts of strengths and weaknesses each grading period. Midway through the quarter, progress reports are given to students that may be struggling academically or behavior. Communication with parents about student performance is encouraged. Report cards and Progress reports must be signed by a parent and returned to the teacher within seven days.

Review Homework Policy

Reasonable amounts of academic effort outside the class extend the learning environment and reinforce study skills. This homework review is optional in Early Childhood. Activities can promote independent inquiry and demonstrate the pupil’s initiative as a learner. Also, all Early Childhood students should read, or be read to (in English) a minimum of 20 minutes each night in order to keep English skills on the appropriate grade level. We also suggest some reading in Arabic to develop a love for reading. Students will receive a Student Planner for planning and communication. The classroom teachers will go over the usage of this planner before they are distributed. These planners will go home daily and parents can support the completion of home activities. The planner may also be used to record notes or communication between teachers, parents and students.

Early Childhood Curriculum Overview

Language art: Children engage in many activities centered on emergent literacy such as: listening, speaking, reading, shared writing, shared literature, and journal writing. Children will understand that words are composed of separate sounds and that individual and combinations of letters are used to represent those sounds. Math: Concrete materials which children can manipulate are used to teach math concepts. Children are engaged in creating patterns, sorting and comparing, developing number sense, counting, number recognition, measurement, and understanding geometric relationships and concepts. Social Studies: Social studies is integrated within the language arts curriculum. Students learn to be responsible citizens; develop positive relationships with people; explore events and personalities and changes that shape our world and people who live and work in our community. Science: Young children are natural scientists. Students will be introduced to the scientific method by sharpening their observation skills and encouraging a questioning and inquiry approach to our world. Physical Education: Students have minutes of physical education classes daily. The classes are designed to develop motor skills, promote physical fitness, and encourage good sportsmanship. Music: Develops self-expression and the love for music. Art: Develops and promotes self-expression. The visual arts has practical applications for other curriculum areas including reading, writing, and math.

Phonemic Awareness

Phonemic awareness understanding will help children develop the ability to learn phonics through direct instruction, sharing literature, writing, and guided practice. The children engage in kinesthetic, visual, and auditory literacy activities that help them learn letter sounds. The most effective way you can help your child develop early literacy skills is by reading to them. Many research studies have demonstrated the importance and value of reading to children. Reading to a child helps them develop early literacy skills and a love for reading. Reading also indicates phonemic awareness and is vital to early reading success. There are easy ways for you to help your child develop phonemic awareness at home. These quick, fun ideas can be used as you and your young child are driving, taking a walk, or spending time together. Sing songs that have one or more rhyming words. Ask your child to identify the words that rhyme. Take turns coming up with rhyming words for a particular word family (- ack, -ank, -ill, -ain, -or, -in, -ip, -ay, -ame, -ide, -op, -up, -unk, etc.) the words do not need to be real words. Read rhyming poems and books together, having your child supply the rhyming words as you read

9 Ways for the parents to help teachers:

1. Begin each day in an organized, positive way. Tell him/her how proud you are of him/her. Your child’s self-confidence and security will help him/her do well both in school and in life.

2. Set aside some time at the end of the day to talk about your child’s school day experience. Create a predictable ritual such as 10–20 minutes listening to your child talk about his/her day–before you check phone messages, read the mail, or begin dinner.

3. Have healthy snacks available for your child. Have dinner at a reasonable hour and a healthy breakfast. A well-balanced diet maximizes your child’s learning potential (Check school policy).

4. Include calm, peaceful time in your child’s day. Maintain a schedule that allows him/her to go to school rested.

5. Remember it’s your child’s homework, not yours. Create a specific homework space that’s clutter–free and quiet.

6. Fill your child’s life with a love for learning by showing him/her your own curiosity, respecting his/her questions, and encouraging him/her efforts.

7. Fill your home with books to read, books simply to look at, and books that provide answers to life’s many questions. The school library is an excellent resource. Parents may check out books for their children.

8. Be a partner with your child’s teacher. When you need to speak to the teacher in reference to a specific issue with your child, do it privately, not in front of your child or other parents. Make a point never to criticize your child’s teacher in front of your child or other parents.

9. Set up a system where routine items are easily located, for example, backpacks, shoes, or papers to be returned. Create a central calendar for upcoming events to avoid the unexpected.

Healthy Lunches and Snacks

Students must have a healthy lunch (a sandwich, pasta, etc.), something to drink (water bottle, milk, juice box,) and a healthy snack (fruits and vegetables) every day. Popular and easy snacks to eat could be cucumbers, apples, bananas, oranges, grapes, or strawberries. Chips, chocolate, and sugary snacks go against the Healthy Food policy of the school and therefore cannot be eaten at school. We will be eating in a large group, family style. This is a great time for learning English and social skills.

Many students, teachers, staff and parents share the AISE library. It serves as reading and information center within the context of the various curricula taught at all divisions. In order that everyone may enjoy and make use of the library, students will:

o Share the materials and resources by returning them on time o Return them to where they belong so that other students can

locate them. o Keep materials in good condition so the materials last for other

students to use. o Share the space by allowing others to use the facilities. o Keep sounds to a minimum so as not to interfere with someone

else’s need to read or to find information. o Share the library staff, they are few and you are many!

The library is a classroom where students learn information skills to find, select, analyze, organize, and communicate meaningful information. KG II students visit the library once a week for information skills lessons, literature appreciation and book exchange Pre – K and KG will also visit the library. Overdue notices are sent periodically through the classroom teachers. Any lost books or fees due to the library must be settled prior to the final term or report cards will be withheld.
