Howard County Arts Council CALENDAR W i n t e r 2 0 1 5 2 0 1 6 Dear Arts Council friends and members, My first year as Board President flew by and I am amazed at what we accomplished in such a short time. In addition to providing our core arts programs—exhibits, classes, and camps; affordable studio and performance space for artists to work; and grants to local and regional arts groups—we have been working to expand opportunities for both artists and audiences. To that end, we partnered with the Columbia Art Center to explore the idea of a community-based arts campus at Long Reach Village Center; participated in the Re-imagine Long Reach public engagement process; and engaged the community through a number of ARTreach activities including free mosaic work- shops, a high school music residency, public art, and more. The highlight of our ARTreach activities was the one-day, free, family arts festival held on June 20, 2015. For five hours, festival-goers enjoyed live music on the Courtyard and Cloud Leap stages, puppet shows on the Circle Stage, an interactive LRVC Should Be photo booth, hands-on art demonstrations in every nook and cranny of the village center, stilt-walkers, and more. The goal for ARTreach was to bring people together to celebrate and re-imagine future uses for the village center. The impact of a festival like this lasts much longer than one day—it creates excitement, pride, and a sense of place that stays with the community well after the event! Here are a few fun facts about the ARTreach Festival: Over 1,000 people came and experienced the arts in all forms—for free! More than 110 artists performed, demonstrated, led hands-on activities, or exhibited their work. Artist demonstrations included chainsaw sculpting, fused glass, piñata- making, tie-dying, weaving, printmaking, woodturning, making clay pots on a wheel, painting, and more. Over 65 volunteers came together to make it all happen. We partnered with Councilman Calvin Ball, Celebration Church, Columbia Association, Columbia Association Art Center, Columbia Festival of the Arts, Howard County Government and the Long Reach Village Board to produce the event. Letter from the President Mark your calendars now for our big spring gala! On Saturday, March 19, 2016 from 6–10pm, the Arts Council presents the Celebration of the Arts in Howard County at HCC’s Peter and Elizabeth Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center. Join us for the Celebration—enjoy delec- table edibles from area restaurants and caterers, bid on wonderful works of art by local artists, and enjoy live musical perfor- mances in the Studio Theatre. Following the reception, join us in the Smith and Studio Theatres for the Rising Star Competition, an incredible showcase of emerging artists. The evening will also include the presentation of the 2015 Howie Awards. We hope to see you there! It’s sure to be an amazing evening, so buy your tickets early—they’ll be available in January—and SAVE THE DATE! H Sponsorship, volunteer, and internship opportunities are available. Celebration tickets are $100 (reception and live performance in Smith Theatre) and $50 (reception and simulcast in Studio Theatre). We worked with Long Reach High School music teachers to host an artist-in-education program with Washington, DC-based beat box artist Christylez Bacon, who introduced music tech students to this contem- porary form of American music. We installed The Artists At Work, a whimsical outdoor sculpture by Howard County artist Ed Kidera. And we worked with the Columbia Art Center and the Columbia Teen Center to host four community art-making workshops with mosaic artist Susan Stockman. Nearly 100 people participated in the hands- on workshops and helped create Metamorphosis, a 5 x9 mosaic mural. The visually stunning mural, which is displayed prominently at the entrance of the village center courtyard, was unveiled at the ARTreach Festival with government officials, local leaders and proud participants. Other efforts to expand opportunities included working with County Council Chair Mary Kay Sigaty to convene key stakeholders for an arts summit about the Downtown Columbia arts and cultural district. This group also vetted the findings of the Howard County Arts Facility Needs Assessment published in April by Webb Management Services. The needs assessment will be used to guide future planning for arts venues. All of these efforts resulted in more opportunities for artists and more opportunities for the public to engage in the arts. As the Arts Council looks forward to celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2016, we pledge to work even harder to foster the arts and invite you—our friends and members—to join us in this important work. The Arts Council celebrates 35 years of fostering artists and the arts through two special exhibits: In Gallery I we’ll have a special edition of HoCo Open, the ever-popular all-hung exhibit featuring Howard County artists. This salon-style exhibit is open to anyone who lives, works or studies in Howard County and drops off a piece of artwork at the designated drop-off time and date.

Gallery II hosts Let’s Keep in Touch. For this exhibit, we’ve invited any artist who has ever exhibited in the Arts Council’s galleries to send us an “artful postcard”.

We’ll cover the walls with artistic messages from artists throughout the galleries’ past.

Check out the Artists Block for details on participating in these shows.

Howard County Tourism will co-host a reception for both exhibits and their pARTners in ART networking event on January 22 from 6–8pm (Snow date: January 29). H
