3 Types of Assessment

Formative

•Ongoing assessments in the classroom to inform instruction and learning

Interim

•Planned assessments at intervals to make local decisions at district and school levels

Summative

•Year end large-scale assessments for all decision making and future reference

Formative Assessment

formative assessment n. A process used by teachers and students during instruction that provides feedback to adjust ongoing teaching and learning for the purpose of improving students’ achievement of intended instructional outcomes.

EAGLE supports Formative Assessment Teachers use assessment to inform their instruction. They change and adjust their instruction based on the needs for each student. Students use assessment to inform their learning. They must make adjustments to what they are learning and they must develop strategies for learning.

Grade-Level Expectations and New StandardsWhat are Content Standards?

Content Standards are statements that define what a student should know and be able to do

• at the end of specific time period or grade level

• in a specific subject area Grade Level Expectations (GLEs)

• Term used in Louisiana for content standards for a specific grade

• Synonymous to “Standards” in Common Core State Standards

CCS ELA vs. GLEs ELA

• GLEs–ELA taught in isolation; Literature and literary skills (identifying terms and devices like theme)

• CCS–ELA taught in collaboration; Informational texts for College Career and Readiness (Cross-content literacy integration)

CCS Math – Balanced combination of procedural skill and understanding; Requires students to “explain” and “justify” rather than “define” and “identify”

Science Content Standards

• Next Generation Science Standards currently under development by national groups

• Expected release in Spring 2012

• Will be reviewed for appropriateness to replace current Louisiana science standards; if acceptable, will be adopted in Summer or Fall 2012 to be implemented in 2014-15

Social Studies Content Standards

• Revised by committees of state educators in 2010-11

• To be considered by BESE for approval in June 2011

• To be implemented in 2014-15

Formative Assessment Strategiesthat help Students Learn

Learning Targets—breaking down GLEs into simple language for students

Examples of strong and weak work. Progress Monitoring—frequent feedback about

how the student is doing on GLEs Self-assessment—teaching the student to monitor

their own learning of the GLEs Focused Learning—customizing instruction to

allow students to focus on difficult GLEs SELF-REFLECTION—having students write about

their learning of the GLEs Instructional PLAN—based on available data–

have a plan for each class that covers each and every student

Key Features of EAGLE

Student-friendly GLEs—help students learn what they are expected to know at their grade level and help teachers communicate those expectations to students.

Reports for Students—foster student self-assessment and show students how well they are progressing on each GLE they’ve been tested | Encourages students to focus their learning on particular GLEs.

Reports for Teachers—inform teachers how the class as a whole is progressing AND how individual students are performing on each GLE.

Customized Test Construction—allows teachers to build tests based on targeted instruction | customized tests can be assigned to an individual student or a group of students

Student Information System (SIS) File Upload

SIS is uploaded by the data coordinator to each individual district at the beginning of each school year

SIS files upload Classes, Teachers, and Students and establishes their relationships using five different record types

JPAM districts have a utility to generate the upload files Contact your District Test Coordinator for more

information about your school’s SIS upload RSD, Charter, & Non Public upload their own SIS files

and must contact the EAGLE Help Desk
