The Chinese word for “crisis” is composed of two characters: one meaning “threat”, the other “opportunity”. Change usually involves loss, sometimes of people or things we have really valued, and that feels like a threat to our stability. Yet change is part of life: when something never changes, it’s probably dead! Times of crisis are always unsettling but they open up new possibilities for otherwise impossible life and growth.

I’ve been aware for some time that 2012 would be a decisive year for me and for Eaglesham Church, not only because I turn 50 later this year! There are significant losses. Marlyn McInnes, our Treasurer, stands down after 26 hard-working years in her post, and church finance will not be the same! Our much-loved Session Clerk Craig Wishart is also reluctantly hanging up his pen, on account of a major birthday (50 again?) and a serious health warning. Craig’s quiet wisdom and humour and his consistent, unqualified support for me and for all who serve our church has become part of the spiritual fabric of Eaglesham Church. His unassuming diligence in his public role is well known: what cannot be told is the number of complex and sensitive “people problems” that Craig has calmly dealt with over the years. Thankfully we are not losing him, but his departure as Session Clerk is a major loss for us.

We are, however, losing Russell Shields who has been our Youth Ministry student for (unbelievably!) four years. Russell came to us as a new and enthusiastic but inexperienced young student; he leaves as a mature youth worker easily ready for his first full-time post. He leaves behind a new Sunday evening youth group (EPYC), a new primary school group (JAFFA), and a legacy of spiritual seed sown in the lives of young people, the long-term effects of which only God will ever know. He also leaves behind a number of grieving young

people who are lobbying and pleading with me to allow him to stay! Russell leaves a gap for our youth that we urgently need to fill, and we are currently

interviewing for his successor.

We have also reached a “crisis” point with the need to make a major decision about a building project in the Carswell Hall. The loss of the familiar, the financial commitment and the risk of the unknown will be serious deterrents for many; however time does not stand still and the future will not be the same as the past. We need to decide how to move forward.

Where are the opportunities for new life and growth in the loss and crisis? A new Treasurer, a new Session Clerk and a new youth worker will not do the same jobs as their predecessors but will do their own jobs and open up new potential for growth. However, it is a watershed time for our church and we need to sense what God is doing among us and how he is leading us forward. To that end I am having individual conversations with each of our elders and with others, to review where we have travelled in the last 7 years and to see what is ahead. In August I will take a long retreat or sabbatical for thought and prayer. Hopefully in the autumn we’ll be seeing the opportunities more than the threats, and be ready to move forward with new purpose.

Kirk Session…

I became Session Clerk when Sydney Laird retired some 18 years ago, uneasily aware that he had assumed the role from his predecessor Marston Brown 22 years before.

Sydney reminded me recently that Eaglesham Kirk Session has only had two Session Clerks in 40 years; not a record but ‘no bad’ as he couthily remarked. Sydney was my role model and remains a font of knowledge still capable of springing some surprising information about events and landmarks which have impacted on our Kirk in Eaglesham in times past, recent and distant. I remain hugely indebted to Sydney and wish him well for a speedy recovery from his current incapacity in hospital.

Douglas Lindsay was our Minister when, unabashed at my obvious shock, he asked me to become Session Clerk all those years ago. I am indebted to Douglas also for showing faith in me, for nursing me through my early days as his right hand man, for inducting me in the sometimes archaic complexities of Session duties of minute taking and meeting procedures, gently and patiently guiding me through the life of our congregation. I hope I served him well. He certainly encouraged and supported me and I was privileged to be his Session Clerk for the remaining years of his full time Ministry. Douglas and Marjory have found a new home at Moncrieff in East Kilbride and I wish them many more happy years of retirement there.

When God directed our vacancy committee to Torrance and Lynn McChlery right at the end of a dispiriting search to find a new Minister our belief that she was the one we had been seeking was unanimous and joyful. We have been blessed with our Minister. She has served our congregation faithfully and well. She has preached the Word with unique intellect and interpretative flair, always interesting, unfailingly unafraid to tackle the most difficult issues and compellingly challenging. It has been a privilege to serve Lynn as Session Clerk for her first 7 years as our Minister and we have seen our congregation flourish during her time with us. I hope I have provided the encouragement and support that she deserved as she has unstintingly invested her considerable ability and energy into the whole spectrum of our congregation’s life and witness in Eaglesham.

It has, of course, been an outstanding privilege to have served our Kirk Session and congregation in the uniquely honoured rôle of Session Clerk for the past 18 years and I have been humbled by the warmth of friendship and support I have received from everyone during this time. Three months ago while trying to loup the dyke marked ‘three score years and ten’ I nearly fell off on the way over. Those

coinciding incidents were chastening and during a reflective couple of months I decided that it was time to retire as Session Clerk and ask our Minister and Kirk Session to accept my reluctant resignation and seek a replacement. By the time you read this Wendy Armstrong, the overwhelming choice of our elders to take on this privileged responsibility, will have been appointed. Wendy is my choice too and I am delighted that she has agreed to become our new Session Clerk. She has my complete support as I know she will have yours and I wish her a happy tenure in what is a most rewarding rôle in Session and congregation.

Thank you all for your encouragement and kindness to me.

The sale of the Telephone Exchange has been successfully completed with the keys handed over to the purchaser on the 27th April. We are now awaiting confirmation of how much the Church will receive net of the Church of Scotland selling expenses and for this money to be deposited in a General Trustees account for use on our buildings.

The contract for the refurbishment of the Mid Halls was awarded to Firwood Joinery Ltd and work started on the first phase at the beginning of April. At the moment (hopefully, I’m not tempting fate), work is a bit ahead of schedule with the refurbishment of the BB clubroom and the rear of the Mid Halls near completion and the connection between the two buildings started. The Sports Hall has been and will continue to be in use during the works. The second phase will involve the separation of the Mid and Lesser Halls and will be completed by the end of August.

We have the various permissions we need to market the Lesser Hall as a dwelling house and we intend to do this at the end of May.

Further discussions on proposals for the Carswell have been held and some alternative suggestions are being investigated. This is a major project for the Church and one which we are not prepared to rush. We have therefore agreed not to apply for funding this year until all avenues have been explored.

Buildings Group…

Fabric…The winter has left us with plenty of work to do.

At the manse, we have started render repairs yet again! However, the Telephone Exchange has now gone, so that is one less property to look after.

At the Church, we hope to have money to allow us to tackle high level decor works this summer.

We are in to major fabric works at the Mid-halls with the building work proceeding with good speed, and hopefully with the roof arriving on site next week for the rear extension. All this work has resulted in us having a few bonfires to dispose of years of accumulated rubbish. We have started painting the old BB club room to help bring it up to a standard for its new role of being a more user-friendly and well heated space.

On a sadder note, we have had vandalism around the properties over the last three weeks. The BB mini bus was damaged, followed by four rear windows being broken and a security light smashed all at the rear of the Carswell.

But we can rest easy...we have two crime event numbers, but no policeman has come near!

As we head into summer, the weather has not yet permitted us to venture in to our endless list of outside works. Hopefully, this will happen soon.

Admin Matters...

Our Stated Annual Meeting took place in the Church on Sunday 18th March when Marlyn presented the accounts for the 26th and final time. She was warmly thanked for her many years service in the role of Treasurer and presented with flowers and a gift. Elspeth Napier had audited the accounts and added her thanks for the ease with which the audit was carried out. This was Elspeth’s first audit and possibly her last as she has very kindly taken on the role of Treasurer and we thank her and wish her well in her new post.

Ronnie McIntyre has resigned as Freewill

Offering Convener and Ian Gray has agreed to take on this important post. Thank you to Ronnie for many years service and we’re very glad he will continue as Door Duty Rota co-ordinator.

St Bridget’s have now returned to their own refurbished building but hopefully the links we forged while they were with us will remain – in fact they have already helped us out one night when we were short of hall accommodation and the offer is there if we need it in future.

On Sunday, 22nd April we had a Congreg-ational meeting after morning service to discuss the titles of the Carswell Hall. It was overwhelmingly agreed by the members attending that these should be transferred to the General Trustees. The main reason for this is to allow us to spend money raised from the sale of the Telephone Exchange and the Lesser Hall on upgrading the Carswell.

Life of a Youth Ministry Student…Here we are. I have spoken of this day for the past year and it is finally here. This is my last month working here in Eaglesham.

Over the past four years I have learned a lot and grown professionally, academically and personally. This experience has only been successful because of the support and opportunities provided by people in, and even beyond, Eaglesham. If I was to try and thank people individually then I would experience two key problems. First I would run out of time and space very quickly. Secondly there are so many people that have supported me with and without my knowledge that I would forget to thank some important people.

As a result I just want to thank everyone. People that I worked with regularly and occasionally; all the young people I came into contact with; all the parents that have enabled my work; anyone that has provided personal, prayer or financial support; and the list could go on. Thank you all!

I have been receiving amazing responses from people, especially young people, who will be sad to see me go. The badminton club gave me an amazing last day and I have been told that there is even a petition going around to get me

to stay. I love all the young people I have worked with and I will miss them greatly. However, I feel that God has plans for me elsewhere and someone else planned to continue the work in Eaglesham. The young people here have had a unique opportunity to impact my academic life as well as professionally and personally, so you will be remembered.

After saying all this, Fiona and I are not moving house straight away, so you may still see us around. If you do then please feel free to say hello and let me know how things are going in your life. I pray that God will continue to bless you here. That he’ll guide the church to the right person that will continue the great work taking place with amazing young people. Finally, I wish you all a sincere thank you and a fond farewell.

Russell

Toddlers Playtime is a group for children from 0-4 yrs and their parents or carers. We run in the Carswell Hall on a Friday afternoon during term time from 1pm-2.45pm. Come along and enjoy active and imaginative play and chat with other local parents. Contact Karen Letts for further details.

During the second half of our session we again had a varied selection of speakers and entertainment. Representatives from three of the charities we are supporting this year gave us a good insight to the work each of them carry out. The Church Choir and The Clyde Coast Fiddlers provided us with excellent musical evenings. We were taken on a tour of our beautiful Scottish countryside, visited the Italian Lakeland Gardens and during our project evening we heard about life and the difficulties in Cambodia. We are now looking forward to our annual Afternoon Tea where we are able to catch up with invited guests from other Church Guilds in the area. This year the Guild is 125 years old and we are delighted that one of the National Past-Presidents has agreed to be our guest speaker.

1st Eaglesham Guides…

The Guides, as usual, have been very busy this year. Our badge night being very successful; from cooks, world traveller, animal active, craft, agility and many more, well done girls and thanks to our testers for giving up their time for the guides. Our Senior Section girls ran a beauty night for us from nails to hair. After our pampering we took a trip to 10 pin bowling at Strathclyde Park, what great fun we all had and a special well done to Amy Clark who won the overall competition. Our last night was celebrated with a Jubilee Olympic sausage sizzle. Three of our guides Alice Carter, Elise Coubrough and Amy Lightbody arranged the Olympics, this was held out in the Orry (a lovely night, apart from

the midges) as part of their Baden Powell challenge badge. The girls then came in for sausages and cakes, a great time had by all. County Camp is this weekend 25-27 May and it looks like the weather is on our side this year!! With 214 girls from East Renfrewshire, it will be great fun. On a final note, on behalf of all the guides and leaders, we would like to say a big thank you to Russell who has attended many meetings with us, he has made lots of friends through the years with all of us and we wish him (and Fiona) every success with the future.

Walking Group…The Walking Group continues to meet on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month. Walks are normally around 5 miles, lasting a couple of hours, and aim to finish at a decent tearoom. Dates for the forthcoming months are June 13 and 27, July 11 and 25, August 8 and 22.

Likely destinations in the near future are Castle Semple, Culzean Country Park, Cart Blanche (Holmwood to Pollok) and Strathclyde Park.

Departures are from the Church Hall at 10.00.

ETAP Caledonia…

Russell’s leaving bash… Badminton Club…The Saturday morning badminton club has about 20 youngsters from our community attending from 9-12 am. This will be recommencing in September but there may be a short period of time where we need someone in the church fellowship to help organise a rota. It is hoped that the new ministry worker will take up this post. If you could help out in this way please contact Stuart McChlery (303495).

The church is planning a farewell event after church on the Sunday 24th June. Based on recent weather we are planning a gourmet BBQ under Mediterranean skies and for the more distinguished attendees gateau and coffee. Alongside this we will be running a number of challenge games of Olympic proportions (Giant Jenga, Pillow fights, water balloon shot Putt…. To name a few). There will be a presentation to Russell for the fantastic work he has done over the four years has been with us. It is likely to last no longer than an hour and hopefully we can give Russell a fitting and appreciative farewell.

Catriona and I managed to complete the Étape Caledonia on 13th May despite strong wind and rain. We both found it tough and were pleased to finish in 6 hours, 10 minutes, well down the field but by no means last. Many thanks to all of you who have sponsored us and, of course, it is not too late to support this Charity. An envelope in the plate enclosing your details with the donation is one way, and we do have pages on line at Just Giving and also Virgin Money Giving. Junior Section…207th Company Section…

We have had an excellent session in the Junior Section this year rounded off by our annual display on the 17th May. The Boys always put on a good show and this year was no different!

It is with great pleasure to say that due to first class behaviour and excellent attendance records every Boy has gained their badges for session 2011/12.

Junior Section Camp to Carronvale, Stirlingshire is from the 15th – 17th June, further information will be handed out to the Boys for this weekend trip over the coming weeks. Junior Section will continue to run up until camp so hopefully the weather will allow us to get out on the Orry for games!

Joint OIC Junior Section

The session of 2011/12 is now officially over. We brought the year to an end with our annual display which was as great a success as ever. Inspecting Officer Battalion Secretary Mr. Jim McVean, parents and friends were treated to an evening of music, marching and some quite advanced vaulting. Notable achievements among the boys are Jack McPhail - Best Recruit; John McBride - Best contribution to Christian Faith; Alistair Campbell and Derek Scott for 5 years perfect attendance and this year’s Best All Round Boy went to Frazer Robertson and Alistair Campbell joint. Despite having limited use of the midhalls we still managed fine and many thanks to the Parents and Friends group for the tea and coffee afterwards. I’d like to take this this time to thank all parents and relatives who have supported the BB this year and will still continue to, I’m sure. With the session now over the countdown is on to Camp 2012. Our Camp in Arran is the highlight of the BB calendar and all boys and officers are encouraged to come, as the old saying goes, ‘Camp is for the boys (and Fraser)!’ Signing off for the year and looking forward to next year’s batch of new recruits and all boys (hopefully) returning.

Anchor Boys…

Anchor Boys finished the session with our annual display on the 8th May, which this year was an based on the Olympics. We had themed games, learnt many interesting facts about Olympics past and present and finished with an exciting awards ceremony, presented by our Inspecting Officer, Russell Shields. We also had a surprise video message from Eaglesham’s representative at the Olympics, Lynne Beatie, who grew up in the village and is now captain of the British volleyball team. We wish her all the best on her Olympic journey and will be watching and cheering her first game on the 28th July.

News From Thailand...

About four hours north of Chiang Mai, high up in the mountain ranges, there is a beautiful Akha village precariously perched amongst the steep coffee plantations of Doi Chiang. This was Ketsara’s childhood home. Coming from the Akha Hill tribe group, Ketsara now works with Al in the Office of Child Protection, and the Muir clan were recently invited to brave the crazy, dusty mountain roads and stay with her lovely, welcoming family and friends. We arrived at the village after a hair raising journey ( its best not to make sudden noises like AAARRRGGGHH whilst your husband is driving!)and the children were immediately transfixed. Pigs, chickens, puppies and plenty of happy mucky kids to play with, they were in their element straight away. Wasana (Ketsara’s cousin ) helped her mum to prepare a delicious Akha meal whilst Ketsara tramped us into almost every house in the village

introducing us to aunts, uncles, grannies and childhood friends. What a welcome!!! We were served the best mountain rice with “laap moo” and fresh greens, eggs courtesy of the roaming chickens and a delicious chilli and tomato paste.

On Sunday we went to Akha church. It was wonderful to see the ladies dressed in their traditional Akha clothes. The girls spent time in Sunday School enjoying the amazing singing and general larking about. (Yes, Akha kids misbehave in Sunday School as well) Our girls were very honoured as Ketsara, Wasana and the village ladies had made them Akha hats. They had a final fitting at Wasana’s house before the hats which had been carefully stitched over several months and beautifully hand decorated were finished and ready to wear.

Sadly there has been a history of Akha children leaving their village homes and being raised in orphanages often by well -intentioned Christian groups. The Child Protection Office strongly supports the message that wherever possible children should remain in their own communities under the care of their own families. There are many, many complex issues that this raises but it was a joy to see Ketsara operate amongst her own people with strong leadership skills and a real concern for the welfare of the children.

As the sunset stretched over the mountains spreading a dusky pink over the simple village dwellings we wondered at the beauty Sorting coffee beans is a family event! and diversity of God’s creation. It was lovely to experience the community that these hill tribe people share and to worship God alongside them.

Our prayer is that communities like this are enabled to build strong family units where children find a sense of belonging and protection. After all, isn’t this what God wants for all of us, whether in the UK or Thailand, the Akha Hill Tribes or the tenements of Glasgow!

Child Protection Project

Our project is still forging its way forward and finding its identity in wider Thai society. We have come a long way in four years. This is a time of change. Several months ago the leadership of the church indicated it may be better if the project became an independent entity – there were positives and challenges to this proposal. Much time and energy has been spent meeting prospective organisation who could bring our project under their ‘foundation status’, but decisions have been slow to emerge. During this time, all project staff felt secure in the knowledge of being called to serve the ‘church’ and it was with some relief last month that another church executive member suggested the Office of Child Project remain a permanent feature within the Church of Christ in Thailand. This is being worked through and looks promising. Still, our project activities need funding, so much of Al’s working hours are spent proposal writing and seeking partners to permit the team to continue their important ministry.

Our activities continue unabated. With the assistance of around 50 volunteers we held a very successful ‘Children’s Day’ event for 170 vulnerable kids in early January. Details and pictures can be found at Children’s Day 2012 report.pdf

An increasing range of organisations are seeking the assistance of our project, but very encouraging is the growing relationship with the Thai Government. Recently Central Government in Bangkok contracted our team to work with female victims of Human Trafficking from Laos. In addition funding has been secured for a year -long ‘pilot’ project to teach our anti sexual exploitation message (called 3-3-5) to children in Government schools in the northern city of Chiang Rai. As these are predominantly Buddhist schools, our message cannot be overtly Christian, however much of the story telling is based on Christian values. Details of this program can be viewed at epostcard11.pdf Both of these activities go some way to fulfilling one of the project goals of working closer with the Thai Government and highlighting that they need to take responsibility for child protection in Thailand.

The nature of project work shines light in dark places. Cases of abuse are very difficult

to deal with in a country with incredibly weak and at times corrupt law enforcement agencies. Nonetheless through a network of mainly Non- Government Organisations and some key Local Authority individuals a number of community leaders have been exposed as allegedly abusing children. Unfortunately these individuals blame our project for being caught which in turn has caused deep personal safety concerns for our project colleagues. Letter from Rhian

Hi Friends, I still remember when I first came to school in Chiang Mai and I walked into the classroom and didn’t know anybody. I was trying to work out where everybody came from when one girl (Sarah) who is Japanese/American said “you can sit with me”. I didn’t know then that she would become my best friend. Sarah’s Mum and Dad are not Christian but Sarah is. She loves to come to church with me but it’s only on special days like her birthday. I took her to a worship night last week and we had great fun. I am very sad though because at the end of March she will go back to Japan. We have already had snot, tears and hankies and I will find it very hard to say goodbye. Can you pray for us?... Rhian & Sarah xxx

Please also pray for Kirsty and Isla who have well established friends here and feel as though they will be leaving home as opposed to going home in July.

As we enter into our last few months in Thailand, we find ourselves looking back over the past four years and reflecting on God’s faithfulness and the many blessings we have experienced here. Along the way there have been challenges but…

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning: great is your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3v 22-23 (Hallelujah!)
