Introduction
EAC component is an abbreviation of Educate a child - a project governed by UNHCR for
Punjab and Sind for Afghan Schools in order to upgrade their schools and make them
thoroughly functional so that the attendance of Afghan students in the school overall and
especially the Afghan girl students is improved. We are living in the world that is undergoing
profound transformations at all levels. Countries that have mainstreamed international
standards in their policies and regulations are able to better protect their populations and
masses as well as their targeted communities and give them a bigger and recovered choice of
opportunities which makes them more competitive and making it easier for them to stimulate
diversification nationally and internationally. EAC component is not only for Afghan students
but also to build up the capacity of teachers teaching in Afghan Schools with modern
techniques and refresher courses in order to meet the needs. Educate a child focuses on the
more and more enrolment of Afghan girls into the schools by removing their coherent and
inherent and other conventional barriers which hinder in their education.
EAC component includes construction of classrooms and toilets in Schools, Capacity building
training of teachers, community sensitization campaigns, provision of Sports goods and
furniture at schools and provision of Sanitary napkins at girls’ schools. EAC project was
materialized in Punjab and Sindh with the ominous efforts of SHARP. SHARP feels honor in
felicitating the Afghan Refugees and UNHCR for this momentous completion.
In fact SHARP in collaboration with UNHCR gave birth to Unification of Afghans for the
promotion to educate a child, which will in turn contribute the education, stability, security and
prosperity of Afghans in Pakistan and beyond. Relation between SHARP and Afghan Nationals is

principally in the field of education. SHARP in collaboration with UNHCR is engaged in
comprehensive efforts to expand and further strengthen the horizon of education in Afghans by
providing wide-ranging multi-dimensional framework for uplifting of Afghan children in the turf
of education.

14
Manager SHARP, Mianwali, Civil Engineer SHARP and the contractor for checking the
construction work. Construction work was completed and verified by the UNHCR monitoring
team and found satisfactory according to the approved project proposal. The main purpose of
this construction was to foster and promote better standards and amenities to the Afghan
students as a means of advancing with the pace of time and age ensuring their education and
safety.
This construction is a rehabilitation of schools
and toilets which accumulates the
process of standardization no doubt is costly and time consuming but also inevitable,
indispensable, imperative and unavoidable.
On 12th September 2014 UNHCR monitoring team assigned additional work to the contractor
under EAC Project. The contractor had successfully completed additional work and installed the
items as per specification. This will be remembered for time to come and with the new premise

Provision of School Furniture
20
Distribution of School Furniture
Furniture for school is very essential to make a classroom look like a classroom. Without
furniture classroom is disfigured and blemished. A good and tidy classroom draws attention of
21
the students and guarantees to move them on. That’s why there seemed to be a dire need to
upgrade Afghan schools with the supplement of furniture items to restore the lost strength of
overall turn out of schools to obtain positive
results, though it appears to be a hard time taking task. Refugee schools are going through
enrolment recession because of so many factors that’s why practical measures are being taken
to uplift this downturn of Afghan students.
22
Distribution of furniture at 9 Schools in Camp Kot Chandna
Schools at Punjab was organized from 22nd September 2014
to 25th September 2014 in which school chairs were
provided at various schools so that Afghan children
may not be underprivileged of the basic facilities
merely because of being Refugee. School is the place
where children go to achieve education rather to
receive it from here and there that’s why a well
maintained furniture makes a classroom a
distinguished from other places and it creates a
sanctity of being student and a being learner. So EAC
project along with SHARP rehabilitated the deformed
conditions of classrooms to make education
interesting and accessible to the refugees.
23
24
Provision of Sanitary Items
25
Sanitary Napkins were
distributed among 200 Students
of 4 Schools at Mianwali and
Lahore Afghan girl students
reaching at the age of puberty in
order to understand the monthly
periodical needs of the growing
girls so that they may identify the
concept of hygiene and
sanitation. This distribution of
sanitary napkins was in other
words a calling attention notice
seeking a dissertation on the most
26
important issue of young growing girls to draw their attention on their foremost natural health
issues. This matter required immediate practical awareness through communication and
counseling to make it effective. SHARP along with UNHCR has mobilized the Afghan females and
young girls for this wakefulness campaign. For this purpose SHARP team visited all the
constituencies at Camp Kot Chandna to contact the refugee females.

Provision of Sports Goods
31
Sports are known for producing the most
remarkable Athletes, high-ranking characters,
dominant leaders and celebrities. Sports activities
create the art of winning and tolerance after losing
which determines sportsman ship with a fortitude
that the difference between the impossible and the
possible lies in a man’s determination by giving him
an opportunity to play. Playing different games in
school keeps the dreams of Afghan children alive and
they make
everything possible for themselves which was impossible for the once. That’s why supplying
sports goods to various afghan schools was in fact
giving them a first phase of confidence and this first
bit of confidence is the gateway to many other great
things.
Under EAC Project Sports goods were distributed
among 17 girls and boys schools at Punjab and Sindh
so that Afghan children may develop healthy and
fecund activities and
Prompt interest to go to the school as a blessing which
they lack at home but they are fulfilled by it in schools. All these things administered to the
schools were set up to induce a driving force to Afghan children so that they may be
enthusiastic to go to the schools.
32
Community sensitization means to create
awareness in a certain community against
health, education, poverty, violence, trauma
diseases and other social abuses by holding
certain awareness campaigns, counseling,
directions, colloquium, tutorials, seminar and
workshops so that oppressed and subjugated
people may tend to a better molar value of
life and its affinities.
Two community sensitization campaigns were organized to promote importance of Education.
First session was organized on 10 June2014 at VRC Songal, Gadap Town and
second session also as WORLD REFUGEE DAY (WRD 2014) on 20 th June, 2014
at the same venue. Collectively 250 participants including Afghan Parents,
Teachers, Volunteers, Parents Teachers and Youth committee Members and
students of 08 Afghan Schools attended following sessions.

Constrains
EAC component is a successful project funded by UNHCR which went through certain
constrains which were although an inhibition in the completion of the project but such
reticence was caved in by consistent strategy and continuous line of attack. These
constrains were:
• Extreme weather conditions making mobility indispensable.
• Least community sensitization making them unaware of payback of EAC component.
• Uneven and broken roads of camp un- facilitated the transportation of construction
material of EAC architecture which resulted in the delay of construction.
• Un- timely, long and consistent rainy weather was a delayed factor in the construction
of EAC component.
Suggestions
There are certain implications which make EAC component superlative and idyllic for the future
prospects which are:
• Up gradation of schools from middle to secondary and then secondary to higher
secondary level so that the Afghan children especially girls should not travel pole apart
in search of education.
• Construction of more and more classrooms and toilets for higher secondary section.
• Provision of missing facilities like renovation of existing toilets in Camp Schools.
• Provision of more furniture like cupboards, black boards, staff room furniture should be
made possible.
• Drinking water for Afghan children in schools should not be a dream for them.
• Proper water and sanitation means should be adopted for the cleanliness.
44
• Construction of Boundary Walls in some Schools of camp for protection of children.
• School compounds and grounds should be spacious enough to meet the recreational
and sports needs of the children.
• Community sensitization campaign should be raised in order to increase number of
girls in Schools.
• Sweepers and School maids should be appointed to facilitate the children and teachers.
• Watchmen at the gates should be appointed from the relevant Afghan tribes to make
the safety and security system of the school fool proof.
• Power supply in the class rooms should be appropriate along with electricity items like
fans, bulb so that the students may not face any difficulty in schools.
• Refresher courses and teacher trainings for camp pedagogues should be enhanced.
All these above facts of EAC component make a stable path to maintain and provide quality
physical and mental rehabilitation services to a neglected segment of the society called Afghan
refugees. EAC component is an emerging phase in the lives of Afghan children which promises a
bright future to ensure mandatory preliminary primary education. So integrating these Afghan
children with curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities epitomize their basic right
to educate and eventually it will claim that education is a refuge for refugees in adversity.
For me education is an empowerment that has empowered nations, men
and women and this power cannot be suppressed
