In October of 2014, Pastor Hartfelder began a year-long selection process to become a chaplain for the Columbus Police Department (CPD). In July of 2015 he was one of 10 clergy from the Columbus Metro area selected to participate in the new Chaplain Program for the CPD.

We thought it a good idea after a year’s experi-ence to interview Pastor Hartfelder about his in-volvement as a chaplain with the Columbus Divi-sion of Police.

Editor: How did you get interested in the CPD Chaplain Program.

PW: Béla Bernhardt, a member of Grace and a Lt. in the CPD, approached me and asked if I would be interested in applying. Under my high school yearbook photo it says my goal was to be a U.S. Navy Chaplain. I was a member of the Sea Cadets and the Junior Pershing Rifles, a trick drill team. As the saying goes, “life happens while you’re making other plans” and I didn’t become a Navy chaplain. I have always had a high re-gard and respect for law enforcement. When Béla brought this opportunity to serve in this way I was immediately interested. In fact, serving as a CPD Chaplain struck me as a sort of bookend, a chance to serve at this point in my life.

Editor: The Chaplain Program has changed. How so?

PW: The CPD wanted the new program to grow be-yond chiefly ceremonial support. The Rev. Rich-ard Ellsworth who served Westerville’s Central Col-lege Presbyterian Church for almost 50 years was ending his nearly 50 years of service as the Chaplain for CPD. The Division leadership envisioned ex-panding the chaplain program by growing the number of chaplains to enhance accessibility to all of the Division’s employees.

The current program is one of providing sup-port, encouragement and counsel to the almost 2000 members of the police force plus the nu-merous civilian staff. Chaplains may also assist as a resource in spiritual matters if requested. Additionally, chaplains serve at public functions such as banquets, award programs, promotional events and city-sponsored events, at the request of the Chief of Police.

I see my role as one of providing friendship, support and concern for the spiritual health and well-being of the officers and staff. I dare

say most of us are not aware of the tremen-dous stress and the many risks those in law enforcement face every day and the im-pact this reality has on their families and loved ones.

Editor: What was the selection proc-ess like and what are you required to do to maintain this chaplaincy?

PW: As you’d expect, the interview process was thorough. Candidates were interviewed for suitability in 7 areas: experience, accessibility, sincerity, connectivity, commitment, motiva-tion and affinity toward law enforcement. A full background check was also completed. Once selected we spent two full days of initial training at the Police Academy facilitated by the Interna-tional Conference of Police Chaplains, although a few of us volunteered for two additional days of optional training. I’m the type of guy who says “yes” to free learning when given the op-

portunity! Chaplains also must meet the Division’s professional standards. Briefly they are: 1. Minimum of five years parish ministry. 2. Achieve International Confer-ence of Police Chaplains (ICPC) ‘Basic Cer-tification’. 3. Follow all Department poli-cies, general orders, rules of conduct and procedures as defined by the Department of Public Safety. 4. Training in police ra-dio, codes and signals. 5. Be responsible for a minimum of 2 hours per month of

Division involvement.Editor: Do you carry a firearm?PW: No! In fact we are not to interfere in any

way during a ride-along while an officer per-forms his or her duties. We must remain in the police vehicle unless otherwise instructed by the officer. We must display our badge or ID when called to a scene or while on official business. CPD has provided us with full uniforms that we wear following a specific protocol.

Editor: You have described a chaplain’s general responsibilities. Can you be more specific about your experiences so far.

PW: At this point I have experienced four ride-alongs with officers. On two of those the first call

ADULT LEARNINGOPPORTUNITY CONTINUES

“That the World May Know”

On June 19, a new DVD set was begun in fellowship hall during the Sunday School hour. It is titled ‘The Early Church - Becoming a Light in the Darkness.’ It isn’t a new series, just a continuation of the goal of “That the World May Know” series that God gave the Israelites: to live in the world so that through each of us, the world may know that our God is the one true God!

Attendees will be exposed to some of the early churches including the church of Sardis, Pergamum, Ephesus and Laddicea - church-es also mentioned in the book of Revelation. The study continues in fellowship hall between services at 9:45 on Sundays. These videos, filmed where Bible events actually took place, weaves together historical, cultural and geo-graphical contexts to reveal keen insights into how people in biblical times understood God and Jesus’ teachings.

Even if you have not attended previously, your horizons will be expanded by renowned teacher and historian Ray Vander Laan as he shares his knowledge and understanding of the Scriptures significant for believers today.

This class is facilitated by Bill Kulju.

The Hospitality Ministry is in need of someone to lead the Loaves and Fishes Cafe Sunday morning ministry.

This important service to Grace is an excellent way to not only serve but to meet and become fa-miliar with members and visitors.

Please prayfully consider helping us continue this important ministry. Contact Mike Shuman at: 614-882-7952, or 614-348-1886, or email [email protected]

The ministry is also in need of volunteers to staff the Cafe following each service on Sundays. A sign-up sheet to volunteer is located at the Cafe.

M.O.G. FISHING TRIPOn Saturday, June 18, the Men of Grace and sev-

eral children made the trip to Port Clinton to catch some walleyes. The walleyes proved fairly elusive, but organizer Dan George reported that the may-flies did make their appearance known. A day on the water is never a failure, as everyone enjoyed a day of fishing and comradary. Several of the young-sters even tried their hand at steering the boat.

Stewardship Corner This is Christian StewardshipBecause God has promised

love for us, we are turned from obsession with ourselves to concern for others. Jesus Christ does this dramatic shaping of our lives in ways beyond our understanding but well within our expe-rience. We live with Christian wisdom when our choices match the direction God has called us to follow.

Look around you. Where do you see people living for others? Look at your own life. Where does this concern show up in what you say and do? Celebrate what God has done in you and others!

Stewardship is living for others, by the grace of God. You are already doing that. By grace this God-given direction will continue in you.

This is Christian stewardship.

Ten Tips for Inviting People to Grace1. Invite someone you know. Time after time surveys show that the majority of people come to church for the first time because a friend invited them. and this majority wants to be invited to Sunday morn-ing worship! Thus, when you invite someone you know to church, it’s not only personal; it’s also the most effective invitation.2. Pray about your inviting. The Holy Spirit can and does work through you to help others come to church to hear the Good news. ask the Spirit’s help through prayer as you reach out to others.3. Invite persons in their time of need. There are times in most peoples’ lives when the message of Christ and the fellowship of wor-ship are especially needed. it’s at times such as these when a person may be most open to the invitation to worship. people going through the stress of change – a loved one’s death, illness in the family, job loss, divorce, a new baby – can be served by the message of the Risen lord Jesus around which our Chris-tian worship revolves.4. Invite people to a special serv-ice. natural opportunities to invite someone to worship are Christmas, Easter, festival Sundays and other “special” events in our life as a community of faith.5. Invite people who don’t have a church home. While we are de-lighted to have guests from other congregations worship at Grace, our primary purpose for outreach is to those who do not have a family a faith where they can grow in understanding, service, and disciple-ship.6. Invite people because you have a healthy pride in Grace. There is such a thing as having a healthy pride in your church family and the mission and ministry Jesus has entrusted into our hands. Because we have been given so much, we will want others to share in that same joy and salvation. We also have the blessing of a wonderful renovation/expansion of our worship and gathering space to help us welcome others.7. Invite people in your own way. Don’t worry, be natural. There is no one “right” way to invite someone to come to worship or to participate in Grace’s mission and ministry. Even if your words may sound “less than perfect” (to you), trust the promise of the Holy Spirit to work through you.8. Don’t give up. if your invitation is not accepted the first time, be patient and understanding. Try other opportunities and ways to invite that person. Remember, it is never inappropriate to be welcoming.9. Invite people to worship with you. people who don’t have a church home are more likely to accept your invitation if they know you will be there to worship with them. Meet them. Sit with them. Being hosts may also give you renewed appreciation for what we can so easily take for granted.10. Ask your pastors for help. pastor Will and pastor Walston are always ready to help you become better equipped to reach out to the many people in our daily life who do not know what it means to be part of a family of faith. inviting people to Grace is an essential part of our mission: “To reach out with the love of Jesus to grow disciples and serve our community.”

was a 10-18 which means there was a deceased person at the scene. My experience as a pastor was immediately relevant. I have arranged ride-alongs on my days off (Friday) so it doesn’t interfere. While some might wonder if this is a good way to spend a day off, I find it invigorating and

inspiring, probably more than playing golf which I don’t do! But there are also the many personal interactions I have already been privileged to ex-perience with members of the Division. Among us pastors we call this the “ministry of presence” or what happens simply because you are there in the midst of what is happening. We also have quarterly half-day sessions at the Academy and must submit quarterly activity reports.

Editor: Are you on call at certain times ?PW: There are five Zones on the CPD area map.

I am assigned, along with 2 other chaplains, to Zone One in the northern sector of the Colum-bus Metro area. This assignment is for the entire year. One or all three of us may be called to that zone when needed. Chaplains also sign up for at least one entire month as primary chaplain avail-able for 24/7 emergency response. My month is August. The Division recognizes that a chaplain’s primary responsibility is to our congregation so in all cases we chaplains cover for one another when necessary. In fact, this is one of the rea-sons the CPD Chaplain program was expanded to have 10 of us.

Editor: We have had several police casual-ties recently. Have you been called out for any of these?

PW: Since my activation in an October 30, 2015 swearing in ceremony at the Academy by Public Safety Director George Speaks, I have attended three line-of-duty and one natural causes death services.

Chief of Police Kim Jacobs has said that the pro-gram is an example of “You don’t know what you were missing until you have it.” This was brought to light by the tragic death of CPD SWAT Officer Steven Smith. All chaplains performed valuable duties for the members of the Division and their families during a very trying time. This care and concern continues.

Editor: Do we have other connections with law enforcement officers at Grace other than Béla?

PW: Yes. These are the people I am aware of who are or who have been involved in law en-forcement. Carrie O’Neal is a Westerville Police officer. Mark Schroeder serves with CPD. Kyle Bright serves with the Hilliard Police Depart-ment. Amanda Bright is a parole officer. David Yourkvitch, Don Slemmer, Doug Dietz and John Kleberg are retired law enforcement officers. Law enforcement is well represented at Grace.

Editor: Does our Church Council support your decision to participate in the CPD Chap-lain program?

PW: Very much so. Before I applied I presented this opportunity to Council. I am deeply grate-ful for Council’s support and trust who see my participation as a reflection of our congregation’s mission statement to serve our community. I have also had positive comments from the people of Grace. And of course, I would not be doing this were it not for my wife Julie’s encouragement.

Editor: Are enjoying this experience? PW: I truly am. I have always enjoyed learning

new things. Saying this is a different experience is to state the obvious. While my pastoral experi-ence brings much to serving as a chaplain, to be a ‘rookie’ again after 3 decades in parish ministry is refreshing and also very humbling. Interac-tion with police personnel involves badge, rank, clear lines of responsibilities and divisions of la-bor. You’ve heard the expression “on the job”? Police officers take being “on the job” very seri-ously. Looking out for each other and the people they are charged to protect and serve is a great responsibility.

I have gained great respect for the work these public servants perform, and have gained a far greater awareness and appreciation of what they do so the rest of us don’t have to. They strive to keep us safe. And it may be a surprise to some people but every time I’ve asked “Why are you in law enforcement?” I’ve heard this answer, “I want to help people.”

Editor: Anything interesting in the near fu-ture?

PW: Yes. July 10 through 15 I will be attending the International Conference of Police Chaplains 43rd Annual Training Seminar in Albuquerque, N.M. Over 300 Chaplains from around the nation and the world will be there. The week’s training includes many sessions relevant to what I do as Grace’s Senior Pastor. It will also be an oppor-tunity for me to network with and learn from the experience of other chaplains with far more ex-perience than I. •
