CARUTHERS JR. COMMENTARY CORNER: THE FIRST FAMILY: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth” (Genesis 1:27 28). J esus entered the world through family. We read of beings like Gabriel and Mi- chael who enter the world in angelic form and fashion. They appear without refer- ence to father, mother, brother or sister. Jesus, however, comes through human means rather than angelic fashion. The writer of the exhortation to the Hebrews notes, “For verily he took not on him the nature of angles; but he took on him the seed of Abraham” (Hebrews2:16). Jesus establishes and exalts the human family by his identification with it. Earlier the writer of Hebrews informs, “Forasmuch then as the children are par- takers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is the dev- il” (Hebrews 2:14). Jesus took part in flesh and blood by being born to his mother, Mary. Mary hears, “And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shall call his name, JESUS” (Luke 1:21). God distinguishes the human family from all creation when he sends Jesus into the world. The human family enjoys the privilege of being different from everything God created. The words still resound in our understanding today, “Let us make man in our image and after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth” (Genesis 1:26). When it comes to creation, the human family is the first family in all the earth. Nothing else created holds position equal to the human family, the first family. It is important that all humans grasp the awesomeness of the great expectations God has for the first family. After God created Adam, he charged the human fam- ily: “Be fruitful, and multiply, and replen- ish the earth, and subdue it: and have do- minion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living things that moveth upon the earth” (Genesis 1:28). It is most important that humanity remember its significance, its place, and its expectations in this world. It is necessary that we accept that there is no existence for anyone outside of the reality of family. And we learn much about how God formed family by reading the account of the first family among all of the first family. We are all first family in this life, but Adam and Eve were the first among us all. And in them God provides understanding about how family members relate to each other. We begin with Adam. There was life on earth before Adam. But the creation lacked completeness. That is, God never intended creation to be about the hills and valleys, rivers and streams, the skies and the clouds; God intended earth to only have completeness with the creation of man. Genesis 2:45 reads, “These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heav- ens, And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.” There “was not a man to till the ground.” God created the earth as a place where man and woman would superin- tend, manage, and exercise dominion. Eve- ryone young boy and girl should be made aware of this reality. We are not just here, we have purpose. God created man before he created woman. And man experiences purpose by his placement in the garden of Eden. The Bible reads, “And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it” (Genesis. 2:15). Further, man comes to the understanding that the vegetative creations sustains him, “And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat;” (Genesis 2:16). Man not only learns of purpose and sustenance, but from the very beginning man is taught to exercise discipline that recognizes God as Creator. God instructs, “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it; for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die” (Genesis 2:17). These reflections on the early life of humanity are to be shared with each gener- ation. To this point we have learned that (1) Man is placed in the garden of Eden with a purpose, he will till the ground as a superintendent of the earth. (2) Man learns that he not only tills the ground, but he lives to sustain himself through the pro- duction and fruitfulness of the earth. (3) Man learns that life has order, that is, boundaries. There are some trees from which it is good to eat, there are others that are not to be a source of nourishment. These are lessons that should be studied by all who make up the first family. This curriculum of study would cer- tainly clear the confusion humanity has about its significance and purpose. It would give meaning to life. And it would take away the bad taste many have when taking in the truth that life has boundaries.

PREACHER-SHEPHERD JEFFERSON R. CARUTHERS JR.

COMMENTARY CORNER: THE FIRST FAMILY: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth” (Genesis 1:27–28).

J esus entered the world through family. We read of beings like Gabriel and Mi-

chael who enter the world in angelic form and fashion. They appear without refer-ence to father, mother, brother or sister.

Earlier the writer of Hebrews informs, “Forasmuch then as the children are par-takers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is the dev-il” (Hebrews 2:14).

It is important that all humans grasp

the awesomeness of the great expectations God has for the first family. After God created Adam, he charged the human fam-ily: “Be fruitful, and multiply, and replen-ish the earth, and subdue it: and have do-minion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living things that moveth upon the earth” (Genesis 1:28).

Genesis 2:4–5 reads, “These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heav-ens, And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.”

There “was not a man to till the ground.” God created the earth as a place where man and woman would superin-tend, manage, and exercise dominion. Eve-ryone young boy and girl should be made aware of this reality. We are not just here,

we have purpose. God created man before he created

woman.

These reflections on the early life of humanity are to be shared with each gener-ation. To this point we have learned that (1) Man is placed in the garden of Eden with a purpose, he will till the ground as a superintendent of the earth. (2) Man learns that he not only tills the ground, but he lives to sustain himself through the pro-duction and fruitfulness of the earth. (3) Man learns that life has order, that is, boundaries. There are some trees from which it is good to eat, there are others that are not to be a source of nourishment. These are lessons that should be studied by all who make up the first family.

This curriculum of study would cer-tainly clear the confusion humanity has about its significance and purpose. It would give meaning to life. And it would take away the bad taste many have when taking in the truth that life has boundaries.

RESPONSIVE READING Titus 3:1–6

READER: Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,

CHURCH: To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.

CHURCH: But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,

READER: Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

UNISON: Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;

PRAYER Father in heaven, we are thankful for the mercy that saved us, the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Spirit. We pray that we walk in this calling. In the name of Jesus, Amen.

To be saved today, you must hear the gospel (Romans 10:17; Acts 15:7). You must believe the gospel that assures us salvation through Jesus who is the risen Lord (Romans 10:9, 10). You must be willing to turn your life over to God through repentance (Acts 17:30; Romans 2:4). Those willing to live for God through repentance are ready for confession (Romans 10:9,10). The person who confesses is baptized into Christ (Romans 6:3, 4; Galatians 3:27). In baptism, the believer is washed, sanctified, and justified (1 Corinthians 6:11). Christ saves the baptized person in baptism (1 Peter 3:21). If you believe that Jesus died for you and was resurrected, if you will repent and confess, then you can be baptized into Christ and be saved. Come to Jesus today!

COMMENTARY CORNER The earth was not complete with its dry land, water bodies and skies. It needed man. The family was not complete with a man who understood his purpose in hav-ing dominion over the earth, sustaining himself through food from the trees, and recognizing boundaries in life. God ob-served that it was not good for man to be alone. Man was not complete until there was partnership with woman.

The Bible reads, “And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him” (Genesis 2:28). God would make a partner suitable for the man, but before he does, God makes sure that the man under-

stands that there is no suitable partner on earth for him.

Every beast of the field is brought be-fore Adam and named by Adam (Genesis 2:19). But there was not any that was a mate suitable for him (Genesis 2:20). Men and women need to understand that when God created woman, he created the one and only mate for a man. The woman is unique, she is special, she is without equal and without competition in her place as a suitable mate for man.

The woman does not arrive by acci-dent but by God-willed creation and inten-tion. God caused a deep sleep to fall over Adam and from one of his ribs, he formed the woman who will complete the man and further form the first family (Genesis

2:21–22). The man and the woman consti-tute what is the first family of all families.

When Adam named every beast of the field, none had a name that would indi-cate relationship with the man. But when the woman was created, Adam gave her a name that attached her to him. The He-brew word for man was “ish.” the name for woman became “ishshah.”

Adam was excited, elated, when the woman was presented to him. His words, this is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh (2:23). bring us to what every man should ask about the woman who makes up the family: “Isn’t She Lovely?” The first family.
