Are You Well-Rested?
Trang and his family live in a building next to train tracks. All night
long, trains rumble past. Just as Trang is trying to settle down to
sleep, a train rattles his bed and he wakes up. After a few minutes,
he falls back to sleep. Then another rumbling train speeds past. His
wall trembles and he wakes up. “I wish we could move somewhere
else,” Trang grumbles when the sun rises. “The trains always wake
me up, and I do not feel well-rested at all.”
At last, Trang’s mother tells him, “We are moving. I have found a
great place that is not next to the train tracks.”
The new home is just what Trang wants. It is on a dead-end lane
with no trains and no traffic. The night after they move in, Trang
climbs into bed. Nothing rumbles or rattles or trembles, and he is

Juggling
Have you ever watched someone juggle? It takes great skill to keep
the objects from dropping on the floor. If you want to juggle, here
are a few simple steps.
Place your hands at your side with your palms up, and put a ball in
your left hand. Toss the ball up and to the right. The ball should get
as high as the top of your head before it drops into your right hand.
Do this ten times or until your toss-and-catch is quick and nimble.
Then, toss the ball from your right hand to your left ten times.
The next step is to add another ball to your toss-and-catch act. Both
hands should have a ball. Toss the ball from your left hand to your
right hand. As it drops, toss the other ball to your left hand.

S. Check your understanding by answering the questions in the space provided.
1. According to the text, how high should you toss a ball when you juggle?
2. What should you not do if you fumble the ball?
3. The author states, “Every struggle brings you closer to success,” Explain.
Catch the balls, wait for a second, and toss another time. Your hands will
wobble and you will fumble, but do not quit!
The last step is to juggle with three balls. You will still toss and catch,
but this time, add another ball in your left hand. This is tricky, but
you can do it. Every struggle brings you closer to success.

Pet Peeves
A pet peeve is something that bothers, or peeves, a person. It is
not something that bothers everyone, like missing the bus or
talking to rude people. It is something that might make just a
few people grumble.
Do you know someone who never gives back objects you lend
them? Do you have a friend who cuts in line at lunch? Does it really
bother you when you can’t find the pen you know you put in your
backpack last month? Those are pet peeves.
Nobody likes to listen to people who grumble and whine all the
time, but it can help to talk to a friend when something bothers you.
Even if the thing that you struggle with is small, getting it off your
chest can make you smile. Your friend might giggle and say that they

Vampire Bats
Bats are unique in that they are the only mammals that can fly.
Their wings are made of membranes of skin. The skin stretches over
the bones of the bat’s hands and connects to the sides of their body.
A bat is most likely to spread its wings at night. This is when they
hunt for food.
Many kinds of bats eat insects or pollen. The bat with the widest
wingspan—as wide as the average human is tall!—eats plants. Only
one kind of bat feeds on something else. The vampire bat feeds
on blood. Most vampire bats are small; their wingspan is about
the length of a pen. They live in warm caves in Mexico and Central
America. These little bats sleep in the day and hunt at night.
A vampire bat gets food by landing on the grass next to an animal.
