    (II) Major Concern 2

Two programmes were organised in the post-examination period to support senior form students for

life planning education. A mass programme on JUPAS preparation was held on 7 July for S5 students. The programme aimed at preparing S5 students for the upcoming application for university admission as well as helping them to explore their academic and careers aspirations. Practical tips were also given to them for the preparation of their own Student Learning Profile (SLP).

“Planning a Brighter Future” (策劃大未來) Life Planning Workshop was also held on the same

day for S4 students. This workshop, jointly organised by The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) and the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Healthy Budgeting Family Debt Counselling Centre, with the support of the Education Bureau, aimed at educating young people to develop appropriate attitudes towards financial management and the importance of having an early start on retirement planning. In this 4.5 hour workshop, students were guided by social workers with experience in youth financial education. Through different simulation activities, students explored different life stages, looking at working, spending, MPF investment, financial planning and retirement, during which they encountered different financial needs and had to make relevant decisions. Students were also guided in a discussion-cum-debriefing session to reflect on appropriate attitudes towards financial management, and understand the importance of sound financial management and early retirement planning, which are essential for paving their way to a better future.

    (III) Major Concern 3

This year, diversified programmes and competitions to cultivate positive values were launched.

An Outstanding Class Award Competition was conducted for S1 to S6 students. Nine inter-class competitions were held, namely Comic Script Writing Competition, Board Displays Design Competition, Chinese Essay Writing Competition, Cleanliness Competition, Students’ Learning Assessment Week, Best Behaved Class Competition, News Quiz, “Life Skills” Drama Competition and Civic and Moral Education Forum.

    S1D, S2D, S3B, S4F, S5A and S6B were the champions of the

Outstanding Class Award Competition and also got the “Promote a Good Book” Award. A book, which emphasises positive values and attitudes, was chosen by each winning class. The chosen book would be purchased by the library and inspirational reflections would be written and shared with students in lower forms.

  • P.3

The Conduct Award donated by PTA was bestowed on students with outstanding performance. They

had to be nominated by class teachers and subject teachers. Selection criteria were based on the student’s attitude, willingness to serve, sense of responsibility and initiative and involvement in extra-curricular activities. One student was selected from each class. The prizes would be presented in the final assembly.

Through different competitions, a harmonious, caring and collaborative atmosphere was created and promoted in our school. A variety of programmes were also organised to foster a healthy lifestyle among students.

Practice Healthy Lifestyle Award Scheme was organised for S.1 students. Students were encouraged

to develop new healthy habits in the second term. Those who met the success criteria would be given certificates to recognise their effort made in developing a healthy lifestyle. This school year 45 students out of 75 entries were given the certificate of merit in embracing a healthy lifestyle.

Health enhancement classes were held from March to May. The classes aimed at encouraging students to form a habit of doing exercises regularly. Students were taught to exercise in a fun way. Games were designed to improve their physical and mental fitness. Participants enjoyed the game sessions very much and they hope to have similar activities in the next school year.

Workshops on different dimensions of health were conducted during the Life Education period in May to help students to enjoy healthy living. A display of health related publications was held in the library from mid-April to the end of May. Joyful Fruit Day was conducted on 30 April. Through games and a board display, students learnt about the types of fruits and vegetables that can reduce the risk of cancer. Tailor-made lesson plans on the topic of Healthy Lifestyle were prepared for S1 (Physical Education), S2 (Home Economics) and S4 (Chemistry). The topics for these levels were as follows: S1: Health benefits of being active S2: Guide to good eating and nutrition label comparison

S4: Fruits and antioxidants Subject teachers concerned conducted the lessons according to the plans. It is hoped that through the above activities our students will be able to improve or maintain optimal physical and mental wellness.

    2. Activity Highlights

    (I) English Activities

    (i) Secondary 2 Cross Curricular Fashion Design Project (20 May)

On 20 May in SGSS several legendary fashion designers were born! With overwhelming creativity, these new superstars from S2 designed extraordinary outfits in the Fashion Show organised by the English Department in collaboration with the Visual Arts Department, which aimed to cultivate students’ aesthetic appreciation. Individual Awards were given to Chung Long-ching of 2B for the Best Female Model and Chung Yu-hin of 2C for Best Male Model. For the teams, Wood Group from 2B was the Champion. The members were Chau Suet-yi, Chow Wing-yee, Tang Lok-hei, Wong Ho-tung, Yeung Hoi-yi and Yue Lai-tung. Metal Group from 2B was the First Runner Up. The members were Chan Cheuk-ying, Chan Wing-lam, Cheng Ka-pui, Chung Long-ching, Kong Winona Hiu-wan, Lam Cho-yung Joan, Wong Man-hei and Yue Wing-yin. Earth Group from 2D was the Second Runner Up. The members were Cheung Wing-yee, Ko Hiu-yin, Luk Hiu-laam, Sun Yee-ting, Wong Tsz-yin, Woo Yat-wa, Yip Pui-lam.

The Champion was 2B’s Wood Group. Congratulations! Winners’ designs are fascinating!

    Preparing for the show

    2D Woo Yat-wa, Angel

After seeing our S2 fashion show, I was left with the impression that school is blessed with some amazing fashion designers. The designers’ ideas were really awesome and so full of creativity. My group was one of the fortunate ones that was chosen for the competition to represent our class, 2D. Luckily our team also got to claim a prize, as we were awarded second runner-up, a very pleasing result that amazed my team and strengthens the friendship between us. At the beginning of the project, when we heard about this complicated cross-curricular task, we were not so enthusiastic, fearing it would be difficult and time consuming. However, once we began collaborating on ideas and working together we found we had a lot of fun. Of course there were some obstacles we encountered during the project but we were able to overcome these by working together.

    The Main Event

2D Hung Nga-yuet, Ida The collection of designs at the fashion show were inspired by the 5 elements – earth, fire, water, wood and metal. The designers all had interesting stories to tell of how they found their inspiration. Different characters like Thor, images from the Wizard of Oz, and the winning model’s spider themed woodland dress all had the audience gasping. All this imaginative work from the teams to put the costumes together was well matched by the confidence of the models who bravely walked down the runway in front of a large audience of their peers. We were really impressed by all the groups and feel privileged to have participated.

(ii) English Week Fun Fair (21 May)  The English Week Fun Fair was held on 21 May. This fun fair organised by the English Department aimed to incite students’ interests to engage in the self-directed learning of English. Having to prepare for 11 game booths with different themes, student helpers were challenged on creativity and time management skills. They also gained experience of public speaking via presenting their booths to schoolmates and guests in the school hall. During the exhilarating Fun Fair, English Ambassadors also patrolled the school hall to chat with schoolmates and invited them to attempt the tongue twister game. Participants were able to enjoy learning English outside the classroom, learn the importance of independent learning and challenge their English competence via contesting for great prizes and entrance coupons to the English Café.

(iii) Song Dedication (22 May) The Song Dedication was held on 22 May. English Ambassadors helped students deliver their heartfelt gratitude to loved ones and students were encouraged to invite their classmates, friends and teachers to the school hall to share the blessings. Warmth and love bloomed in the school hall as students dedicated songs and sensational speeches to people they wanted to thank. Participating in this event, English Ambassadors were able to practise public speaking and students could practise expressing emotions and feelings with words.

    (iv) English Café (23 May)

The English Café was held on 23 May. The top 20 students from each form collecting the most number of stamps on English Speaking Days and English Week Fun Fair were invited to have fun at the English Café.

Students and distinguished guests had a relaxing afternoon-tea in the school hall with delicacies from around the world and drinks served. With board games and comic books, teachers and students enjoyed a delightful lunch hour chit-chatting together. Students also had an opportunity to use English in daily life as they ordered their food from English Ambassadors.

    (v) Writing Courses The Creative Writing Course and the Journalistic Writing Course were held in April and May to provide students an opportunity to polish their writing with special focuses. In the 8-week intensive workshop, students were encouraged to think critically and effectively write their own tasks. With exposure to different genres of writing, students were able to write clearly and concisely in an appropriate style. The Creative Writing Course for secondary one to three students provided students a solid foundation of skills essential to write creatively while the Journalistic Writing Course for secondary four to five students equipped students with skills to write texts of different genres.

Miss McNab: (shocked) Wow! So many precious metals and stones! My dear! Narrator: Miss McNab’s eyes are shining with pure greed. On the path towards the

cottage, a police officer is coming. Grandma: (with brows bent) What’s wrong with you? Miss McNab? Police officer: (takes out a gun and points to Miss McNab) Everyone, don’t move! Tom: (stutters) Wha…what the…he..heck? Alex: (frightened) A gun! No! Police officer: (to Miss McNab) Everyone move out of the cottage except you! You bloody murderer! (Grandma runs out the cottage and takes the children away from Miss McNab.) Grandma: Stay here, don’t move Lily: What’s happening with you? Miss McNab? Miss McNab: (looks at the bag) They’re mine! They’re mine … Narrator: The situation and the atmosphere are jammed. The tension spread through everyone. The

sky becomes cloudy and seems something is going to break out. Miss McNab: (crazily) They’re mine! No one could take them! (She throws a knife at the Police officer. The police officer avoided it and shot at Miss McNab. “Pang!” a big hole is left in Miss McNab’s chest.) Miss McNab: Ha! Ha! Ha! I won’t die! I’m invincible! (She throws Scotty to the Police officer. Scotty suddenly changes to an ugly and dangerous monster. It bites on the Police officer’s head. His head burst at once! ) Tom: (with his mouth in an o-shape) … Alex: (screams) Noooo! (The monster-form Scotty runs to the others quickly. Lily passes out, so does grandma. The boys are hopeless and desperate. Everything happens as quick as a lightning. While the monster-form Scotty is going to kill them, Hannah runs out with a mysterious and magical outfit. She points at Scotty with a pink wooden stick.) Hannah: Back to HELL! (Scotty burns with green fire to a skeleton.) Miss McNab: (transfers into her true face) Oh! A student witch from the Musky Rosemary Magic

College (MRMC) Hannah: (ignores Miss McNab) Alex, Tom, take Lily and grandma far from the forest. Now! (Alex and Tom prop grandma and Lily up. They run away as fast as they can.) Miss McNab: (angrily) No one can escape! The Fallen! Rise up from the Death! (Zillions of skeleton and zombies climb up from the ground.) Hannah: (seriously) I come from the best magic college in the universe! I won’t let my college

down! I won’t let you pass! Destroy the enemies! Lightning! (Many lightning bolts light up the sky and hit the target.) Miss McNab: (evilly) Not bad you little school girl. But it’s time to end the game. Go to hell! (Miss McNab performs a very powerful spell on Hannah. But nothing happens.)

  • P.8

Hannah: (flies to the sky) I said, I won’t let my college down! Clear the darkness! Holy light! (A shot of glitter hits Miss McNab, she falls down and is vaporized. Hannah feels extremely tired and passes out. She has used too much magical powers. She wakes up, and finds herself in a hospital. Alex, Tom, Lily and grandma are standing around her.) Lily: (pleased) Oh dear! You’re still alive! Thanks goodness! Grandma: (smiles) You’re the best girl on Earth! We love you. Alex: (claps his hands) You’re our hero! Hannah! Tom: Don’t worry, we won’t tell others what we have seen. Hannah: (smiles) Thanks! Lily: (jumps up) Oh! Yes Hannah. I’ve found a letter in your jacket. There’s a very mysterious

and charming logo on it. Hannah: (takes the letter) Oh! Thank you very much! (She opens the letter and reads it. The letter is written in ancient heavenly characters, the most fantastic and amazing characters ever, which were written by Nixon, one of the founders of MRMC! “We are proud of you, Hannah.” said Nixon, “so is MRMC” he added, “we had a meeting while you were unconscious. We made up our mind to give you a full mark in this term’s first mission and upgraded your magic level. Now, you’re a 3-star witch of MRMC. In addition, there is a little prize for you – a magical necklace. Hope it can help you.” Hannah is happy and speechless. She will never forget that day.) (vi) English Debating Workshop

To develop students’ critical thinking and improve their public speaking skills, two English debating workshops, one at elementary level and the other advanced, were organized by the English Department as an English enhancement programme. Thirty students were selected to enroll in the workshops. Through regular training and participation in mini-debates, students enhanced their eloquence and improved their poises in public speaking. Two exhibition matches were scheduled on 2 July in which the debaters showcased their learning outcomes. Fly high, young debaters; embrace the future challenges and be the honours of the school. (vii) Drama Performance at Tang Shiu Kin Victoria Government Secondary School Awarded with the prize of Outstanding Creativity in the use of Props and Costumes in the 2014 EMI English Drama Fest, the group of students staged a performance of their modern adaptation of William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice named The Price to Pay on 4 July at Tang Shiu Kin Victoria Government Secondary School. This performance aimed to sharpen students’ language skills as well as develop their knowledge in drama and theatre arts, and appreciation of English literature through peer exchange. At this event, Pe Chun-wah, Brandon of 1D presented an original soliloquy based on the work of Roald Dahl. This was a part of a character parade with students of different schools bringing books to life on stage for their peers. Brandon bravely presented the title character from Matilda in what was an interesting and amusing performance.

    (I) 男童軍
