What is Dyspraxia?

Dyspraxia is “An impairment or immaturity in the organisation of movement which leads to

associated problems with language, perception and thought” (Brookes, 2007)

Dyspraxia derives from the Greek meaning of “difficulty in doing”. Its preferred medical term

is Developmental Coordination Disorder or DCD (Farrell, 2009)

Affects of Dyspraxia

• Dyspraxia affects each child differently

• Can be diagnosed in any stage of life

• Three types:– Motor (Fine/Coarse) – Oral– Verbal

What Causes Dyspraxia?

• Cause is unknown• Thought to be either:– Genetic – Result from improper development of the motor

neurons• Acquired dyspraxia– Through head injury

• No cure

How Can Dyspraxia Affect School Children?

• Hard to Organise

• Poor time-management

• Poor social skills

• Hard to sit still for extended periods of time

desk and a timetable, all using a helpful colour-coded system, that is clear and easy to use, that makes organising yourself for school
