Duties & Responsibilities of a Welding Inspector:

Welding is process of joining materials caused by application of heat and or pressure,Welding is carried out in any steel fabrication/construction industry and the quality

requirements are very important based upon its application and the purpose intended for use The welding inspection plays a vital role in maintaining the quality requirements of welding .The duties of a welding inspector is classified under three main categories thereare

Before weldingDuring weldingafter welding

Before Welding

Check the availability of the latest codes /specifications to be used for construction and familiarization of the sameensure that the latest drawing are availablereview the WPS & PQR Review the welder qualification ,test reports/qualify the welderscheck the welding process as per the WPS and review calibration certificates of all the relevant equipmentscheck the joint preparation and record the size and dimensionscheck the batch test certificates of the consumables to be used if electrode filler wire gas & baking of electrodes if requiredcheck the availability of the calibration status

check the material test certificatessafety requirementsdocumentation

preheating as per WPScheck weather proper access is available foe welding

During Welding

Check the weather conditionscheck the preheating temperature as per WPScheck weather the correct welder is welding the material in correct positioncheck weather the correct consumables arte usedcarry out NDT after root pass if required for special welding applicationcheck the cleaning and interpass temperaturecheck the welding parameters like amperage voltage travel speed etcsafety requirementsdocumentations to be carried out

After Welding

Visual inspection of the welded material after proper cleaningIdentification of the jointObserve and record the findings during inspection

clearance for PWHT if required as per WPScheck for defects if any by visual

clearance for NDT as per requirements

If incase of any repair

observe and record the findings and compare with the specifications requirementsseek the advice of higher authorities for repair procedurecarry out the repair with a qualified welder following the repair procedure/WPS,supervise the necessary parameters pertaining to duties before during andafter weldingonce the repair is completed ,carry out the visual inspection and clearance for further PWHT/NDT

The duties & responsibilities of a welding inspector are to ensure the quality of work instrict compliance with codes, standards & drawings.

The drawing shall be classified into three broader categories1) Inspection before welding2) Inspection during welding3) Inspection after welding

Inspection activities before weldingTo familiarize with applicable codes standards, specifications of latest editionsand drawings of latest revisionsTo check the welding documents like WPS,PQR & welding qualifications test inview of position limits, expiry or validity etcto check and monitor the welding parameters outlined in the welding procedurelike ,joint preparation ,fit up dimensional check, distortion control techniques etcto check the adequacies of welding equipment ,welder tools for their calibrationand conditionTo check the mill certificates and batch certificates for the material to be weldedand the consumables.

to check documentation of al the prewelding activities like weld Joint No, Welder No, Heat

Nos etc

Inspection during Welding

Welding inspector is to monitor the preheat temperatures maintenanceminimum and maximum interpass temperature maintenancewelding process parameters like voltage,amperiage and travel speedcheck the workmanship by looking at the cleanness and welders qualificationcheck the removal of distortion control techniques like removal after 50% of

welding donedocumentation control

Inspection after weldingWelding inspector is to check the dimensions after welding in the form of misalignmentsdo a final visual inspection to ensure the weld is free from any surfacediscontinuitiesmonitor the non destructive examination if any thing to be carried out and followupmonitor the PWHT and post heating if any and follow up.Identify the repairs if any a and follow up with the following considerations

i. the repair shall be confirmed with applicable NDT techniquesii. report to higher authorities about the extent and severity of repair

iii. get repair procedure approvediv. carryout the repair welding as per the welding activitiesv. do re-NDT if any

But after the underestimated thing is documented in the records welding inspector shallmaintain documents in the following waysLegibleTraceableWith all the relevant requirementsInspector shall carry out all the activities with honesty integrity, knowledgeable in work,good communication and physically fit enough.
