WILD DUNES is a 1,600 acre private destination oceanfront resort and residential community occupying the northeast end of the Isle of Palms near Charleston. Though it is part of the City of Isle of Palms, its main gate off Palm Boulevard allows only resi-dents, employees and invited guests to enter. Wild Dunes is zoned for 2,500 residences and due to its proximity to Charleston, the resort has a year-round population of around 500 families.

Living in Wild Dunes is like living in a first-class vacation destination surrounded by a private country club. The gates at either end of Wild Dunes keep traffic to a minimum and turn the winding roads into restful park ways. For those who want to enjoy nature without sacrificing creature comforts, Wild Dunes has a wide variety of activities. Play a few sets of tennis or a round of golf, lunch at the club, enjoy a cocktail by the pool, relax in the sun on a chaise lounge, or stroll along one of the best beaches in the Carolinas. Everything is right there, well maintained and waiting for you to take advantage of it.

Whether you are retired, looking for a change in lifestyle, considering a second home or looking for a new place to set down roots, Wild Dunes offers a country club lifestyle just minutes from historic Charleston. Close enough to commute, yet far enough removed to make you feel like you are on vacation.

DEWEES ISLAND is a unique side of Charleston that is rarely seen. Dewees is a private island that is only accessible by private ferry or boat, and cars are not allowed on the island. When you arrive on Dewees, you can hop on your electric golf cart and cruise around the island, as the use of gas-powered vehicles is prohibited. This is a great vacation spot if you’re looking for a serene and quiet beach experience. The beautiful ferry ride through the Intracoastal Waterway is a quick 15 minutes from the Isle of Palms Marina.

There are two main buildings on Dewees, The Huyler House and The Landings Building. Huyler House features various amenities for the community such as a swimming pool, tennis courts, and a fitness center. The Landings Buildings is home to the island’s post office along with a gift shop, nature center, and environmental program center.

The community was designed to be environmentally friendly and has a habitat of alligators, fish, turtles, blue crabs, sea turtles, birds and other animals. Dewees is a great place to enjoy nature while walking along the dirt roads, watching for alligators, or canoeing.

Dewees Island

Meet Our Dewees Island ExpertAs a full time, year-round resident of Dewees, Judy Fairchild has extensive knowledge of the ins and outs of the island. Judy started her real estate career on the island in 2011 and is a very active part of the island community, participating in the Environmental Committee, Archives Committee, and the Dewees Island Turtle Team.

As a real estate agent, writer, and photographer, she is an avid birder and citizen-scientist and is certified by DNR to assist with sea turtle conservation. As a South Carolina Master Naturalist who grew up with her feet in the mud of Long Island marshes, Judy feels fortunate to call the island home.

MOUNT PLEASANT’S town planners have worked diligently to preserve the town’s rich heritage and small-town appeal, while allowing it to gain all the positive attributes of a much larger city.

Mount Pleasant now boasts a population of around 60,000 people and spreads out over 50 square miles. The town has a great selection of neighborhoods with amenities, what some consider the best public schools in Charleston County, and a close proximity to downtown Charleston and the beaches. In fact, Mount Pleasant is Charleston’s only access to the barrier islands of Sullivans Island and Isle of Palms.Mount Pleasant is the best of both worlds. With its historic Old Village and a concentration on preserving the region’s Gullah culture, Mount Pleasant is deeply rooted in a rich past. However, a wide array of residential choices and all the mod-ern conveniences and amenities of one of the fastest growing cities in South Carolina make Mount Pleasant a city looking to the future.

CHARLESTON is a city of many faces, and there is no place, and no lifestyle, that rivals it. South of Broad Street is an area of historic homes where old Charleston families live alongside transplanted professionals. Tourists wander the ancient narrow streets and alleys. The sound of hooves on pavement and cobblestone marks the passing of another horse drawn carriage tour. Movie crews periodically change the street signs and put up old gas lamps. Along the Battery, visitors drop their quarters into mounted binoculars so they can view Ft. Sumter, the place where The War Between the States began.

Up King Street and along Calhoun, the spirit changes and so do the faces. Here is the College of Charleston, surrounded by neigh-borhoods of still old homes, but smaller and filled with younger professionals. Towards the Ashley River is the Medical University of South Carolina and the Roper Hospital complex. Along the banks of the river are new hotels, a renovated old warehouse filled with new businesses, and marinas.

Finally, along King and Market Streets, along East Bay, Church and Broad, one finds hundreds of storefronts, from Gucci and Louis Vuitton to consignment jewelry shops and sidewalk sweetgrass basket weavers. The Port of Charleston is the fourth largest container port in the United States. This city is thriving with a perfect blend of modern day commerce and historical significance.

FOLLY BEACH is a natural barrier island that forms the outermost western tip of Charleston Harbor. It is the home of the famous Morris Island Lighthouse, colorful locals, sand, sun, and some of the best surf on the East Coast. Also home to many species of endangered wildlife, Folly is a nature-lover’s dream complete with a maritime forest and dolphin-filled waters. Due to the abundance of outdoor activities and water sports, this normally sleepy beach town comes to life during the warmer months, welcoming visitors and locals alike to waterski, fish, crab, and surf. Folly offers the best of both worlds with six miles of beach on one side and equally stunning river views on the other.

For many, Folly is considered “Charleston’s Beach” because it is located just 8 miles from the historic peninsula. Although it’s close to all the great things Charleston has to offer, it is truly a unique spot. A dazzling combination of bohemian style and laid-back hospitality make this quiet little beach town a true gem on the “Edge of America”. During the winter, it is a small town at the end of the highway. In the summer, it is a vacation destination. Locals proclaim, “We have the best waves, the best nightlife and the best beach atmosphere along the Charleston Coast. But don’t tell anybody.”

SEABROOK ISLAND features three and a half miles of Atlantic Ocean beach front and another mile of sandy shore stretching along the North Edisto River. The island’s uncrowded beaches are ideal for swimming, shelling, fishing, dolphin watching, or even riding horses from the renowned Seabrook Equestrian Center. Seabrook is home to a variety of wildlife such as marsh rabbits, red fox, otters and white tail deer. More than thirty species of reptiles can be found, among them alligators, tree frogs, chameleons and turtles. The island has been involved with the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, North American Bird Watch-ing Open since 1998. More than eighty species, including the bald eagle, have been regularly spotted on the island.

There are no hotels or high-rise condominiums on Seabrook, only private homes, villas and cottages designed to complement the island’s stunning natural beauty. Despite its peaceful seclusion, Seabrook Island offers residents and guests two championship golf courses, a tennis center, horseback riding, award-winning dining, a fitness center, shopping, a deep-water marina and many other world-class amenities. Just a few miles from historic Charleston, South Carolina, Seabrook Island’s 2,200 acres stands as a reminder of the pleasures of a slower pace of life.

KIAWAH ISLAND is a natural beauty. Carefully and thoughtfully planned, as lush as it has always been, Kiawah Island offers relaxation, recreation and privacy. Having escaped the wind and water of Hugo, Kiawah Island is the vision of what a Carolina barrier island should be. Live oaks drip with Spanish moss, palmettos sway in the ocean breeze, beautiful magnolias with sweetgrass plants edge the lagoons and marshes. The environment is very hospitable to white-tailed deer, bobcat, foxes, and migrating seabirds, and nature-loving Kiawah residents and visitors see them within close range daily.

People come to Kiawah Island to enjoy the beach, to play tennis, golf or just relax. Six championship courses make this island a golfer’s paradise. Biking, boating, kayaking, and fishing are all fun ways to enjoy Kiawah Island while many other choices remain for dining, shopping, and spa relaxation.

With a strong sense of preservation for the landscape, the homes on Kiawah are all built into and with the land, instead of on it. The developers of the island have worked hard to nurture the maritime forest, sand dunes and marshes as well as the 10 mile beach to ensure it is there for future generations to enjoy.

WEST ASHLEY derives its name from being the area of Charleston proper just west of Downtown across the Ashley River. Flanked by the scenic waterfront vistas and marshes of the Ashley and Stono Rivers and ancient moss draped oak trees, West Ashley’s initial neighborhoods were developed in the 1950s with its largest growth occurring throughout the 1970s and 80s. The area is now home to more than 60,000 residents. Today, West Ashley is experiencing a revitalization as many shops, salons, restaurants, and other businesses have moved into the Avondale area.

After many years of being essentially a bedroom community for neighboring historic Charleston, the town of JAMES ISLAND was formed in 1993. James Island is surrounded by the Charleston Harbor, Wappoo Cut, the Stono River, and the Folly River. The island also features the Charleston Municipal Golf Course and the James Island County Park, famous for its yearly Festival of Lights and summertime Waterpark. James Island is family friendly living at its best.

To the west of James Island is JOHNS ISLAND, the largest island in SC. Originally a farming community, the island’s history dates back centuries as the site of several prominent plantations, producing much of the area’s rice, indigo, and cotton exports. Johns Islands’ close proximity to Downtown Charleston and beautiful scenic property make it a prime location. It is separated from the mainland by the tidal Stono River, which forms part of the Intracoastal Waterway.
