Anti-Bullying Day This Friday, 15 March, we will launch our first Anti-Bullying Day. The wellbeing team, led by Mrs Cairncross, has been working very hard in ensuring a great range of activities to draw attention to this important issue.

On a broader scale, we will also be announcing our year programs. Each year all classes K-6 will be participating in a ten lesson anti-bullying program taught by class teachers. In 2019 this will occur in term 2, however this will revert to term 1 in following years.

Secondly, a Bounce Back program will be taught in term 3, focusing on skills such as optimism, resilience, growth mindset, courage and goal setting.

Using a combination of these specific programs, we are looking forward to giving students the skills to deal with any issues they may encounter and to help students understand the implications of their actions.

We look forward to the launch of these activities at the Anti-Bullying day on Friday. Keep a look out for a new banner which will be displayed out the front of the school and sums up our key message for all students.

Before and After Care Tender The tender process for our Before and After Care service is currently on hold as the Department of Education investigate their procedures. We anticipate this process to resume in early term 2. Once the dates are confirmed, they will be published in the newsletter.

Parents are encouraged to share their views with the school as a successful before and after care service is an important part of our school.

The panel consists of parent representatives and the Principal. To share views on what parents would like to see in the before and after care service please see Belinda Rayment, President of the P&C or email [email protected]

For information on the process, please contact the school principal either at school or via email [email protected]

PSSA Report Our PSSA representatives have had a very successful fortnight, registering only two losses over the last two rounds in junior and senior AFL and softball/Tee-ball.

In week 6, our Softball and T-ball teams played against Mat-raville PS and came away with victories.

Last week our girls faced Rainbow St and while the seniors had a strong win, our juniors finished just short of the line and lost by just one point.

In AFL our junior team remains undefeated for the season with comprehensive wins over Banksmeadow and Rainbow St over the last two weeks. Our seniors have nearly mirrored that per-formance, however came up just one point short in an action packed game last week.

Congratulations to all of our PSSA representatives this fortnight!

Finlay L Congratulations to Finlay L who represented the Eastern Suburbs/ Sydney Coastal region in the AFL Champion-ships in Sutherland on Wednesday! The East Coast Saints were crowned champions after winning all their games against the Balmain and Cronulla regions and then beat-ing Engadine/Sutherland in the final. We are all very proud of how you performed at such a high level and played with such enthusiasm and sportsmanship throughout the day.

Stage 2 Local Area Excursion Last week Stage 2 had a wonderful morning at Maroubra Beach. Year 3 and year 4 have been applying their skills of historical inquiry to learn about how communities change over time what the contributing factors to these changes might be. We looked at images and descriptions of Maroubra from the past and then we went to the beach to observe and sketch what it looks like at present day. We were able to compare and contrast many aspects of both the natural and built envi-ronments and have rich discussions about the beach scape, the roads, transport, the shops, architectural styles and more. A big ‘thank you’ goes out to all of the parent helpers who came with us on the day to support student learning, the smooth organisation of the day and great company!

Here is a snap shot of our happy historians.

Update on services for parents and carers Last year our school tried to introduce the CareMonkey service to parents to reduce the amount of paper notes and information coming home. Unfortunately this did not get the traction required and only 60% of parents signed up for the service. The school has discontinued this service and parents are encouraged to de-lete their child’s profile.

Our school currently uses a software system called SENTRAL to do a number of activities including marking attendance and student reporting. This year we will be opening this up to parents and carers so this information will be accessible to everyone. By accessing the SENTRAL Parent Portal, parents will be able to see their child’s attendance at school and access all student reports for the past three years (when we started with SENTRAL).

Parent / teacher interviews held in the week from Monday April 1will also be accessed through this parent portal.

To access this portal online parents need to follow instructions that will be sent home via a letter and an email over the coming days.

We will be holding information sessions at school where parents can sign up and see what is available. Look out on Facebook and on the Skoolbag app for dates.

Please contact the office if you are having difficulty accessing the parent portal.

Beach Fitness This term students from 3-6 who aren't in P.S.S.A. are going to the beach every Friday instead of doing school sport. Over the past few weeks, Stage 3 have been having a fantastic time at the beach for sport. We have been involved in a num-ber of beach activities such as: volleyball, relays and bean bag tossing. We have thoroughly enjoyed playing these games on the soft, white sand. It is a shame that we only have one more lesson on the beach.

Stage 2 are very excited to be starting beach fitness at Maroubra Beach next week!

SRC In the last few weeks, MBPS has nominated and voted for their representatives to form the SRC. We had our first meet-ing on the 5th of March, where we had begun getting to know each other. We played a couple of games to make us

feel comfortable and to develop some teamwork. Then, we began to discuss the meaning of being an SRC mem-ber. Some members mentioned that being an SRC means that they have to be a role model, they have to look after our school and make MBPS the best that it can be. This week, we create our SRC contract, ensuring we are al-ways following the core values, we are discussing our ideas and the ideas of others in meeting, and we are reporting back to our class regularly. This week, we also spoke about our assembly where we are excited to intro-duce ourselves to the school. Finally, we can’t wait to or-ganise our first event. It will be a fundraiser to support Ryan Hollyman’s campaign in providing quality resources to schools in Romania using the Donald Regan Association. Our SRC group this year is amazing and we can’t wait to make a difference to MBPS.

Congratulations to the following students who are our SRC members this year:

National Young Leaders Day On Monday the School and House captains went to the International Convention Centre to partake in National Young Leaders Day. 5000 leaders came from all different schools across New South Wales. Some even took seven hours to get there! There were so many people. The main purpose of the event was to inspire us to make changes to improve our schools and com-munities. We had 4 speakers and played a few games in between.

Our first speaker was Tim Diamond, the Co-founder of Cotton On Foundation. He talked to us about his trip to Uganda and how the children and the families were suffer-ing from poverty and from HIV aids. Tim was particularly shocked at the small, ragged huts with floors made of mud and holes in the ceiling that children were using as schools. Tim decided that we needed to make a difference and help these children. He returned to Cotton On and organised a foundation where they sell bags, water, and bracelets to raise money for those children. Since then, they now help

children in various areas of Africa, Thailand and the Northern Territory in Australia.

Our second speaker was an author by the name of Tamsin Janu. She gave us an inspirational speech about how you need to overcome challenges. Tamsin told us about the stories she wrote and where she got her inspiration from. She also inspired us to follow our passions and to take risks.

Cate Campbell, an Australian Olympic swimmer, was our next speaker. She had told us her incredible story of how she became the world's fastest freestyle swimmer. Cate faced many challenges of all sizes from overcoming lazi-ness to dislocating her hip playing handball. It was

astounding hear her resilience and her attitude of never giving up on something you love. Cate explained that her injury encouraged her to think differently about swimming and she actually changed her style from breaststroke to freestyle and succeeded. After two hip sur-geries, when she was 15, she qualified to compete in the Olympics for swimming freestyle. So even when she wasn't at her best she never gave up.

Our final speaker was Holly Ferling - an Australian cricketer. She told us about a lot of very inspiring quotes and incredible messages that we could use in our upcoming leadership journey. Holly mentioned about how everyone should embrace the scary but exciting in your day to day life. She mentioned that as leaders we are big fish in a little pond which means that all the little fish in the big pond will look up to the bigger fish. All of us can become leaders (big fish) to people who are looking up to us (little fish) by helping others to grow the most. Holly Ferling truly is an inspiration and it was amazing listening to her.

Our main take away from the day was that leaders have to listen to and encourage others, believe in themselves, inspire people, set an example, be humble, and help others in less fortu-nate. The people that spoke were amazing and they had achieved so much, and come through the toughest of times. All of the Captains enjoyed the speeches and activities very much and we would recommend the future leaders of our school to attend this inspiring even.
