FALL PROGRAMS

DISCIPLE

918

Please prayerfully consider being in Disciple Bible Study this fall. There are two choices: Wednesday nights from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. starting August 31 or Thursday afternoons from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. starting September 1. Both offer childcare. Disciple . means joining a group of 12 persons who want to learn more about the Bible. We study some each day and then meet together weekly to discuss what we have learned. Each time we will see a video of a leading Bible scholar discussing our lesson. Our study book costs $25.00.

Please call Robert Edwards or Ann Stallings at 683-3467 to ask questions or tell us you'd like to come. Learn more about the Bible -- God's love letter to you!

STEPHEN MINISTRY -CHRIST CARING FOR PEOPLE THROUGH PEOPLE

If you would like to be in a caring ministry where we learn how to minister to folks who have lost a loved one. are going through a stressful life change such as divorce or loss of job, serious illness, or other crisis, Stephen Ministry is for you! Beginning soon, we will meet for 50 hours of training in such topics as the art of listening, telecare: the next best thing to being there, the "small step" approach, crisis theory and intervention, and ministering to shut-ins, grieving persons, and so on. One of the best things about this ministry is we will have a support group for the Stephen ministers when they are caring for folks. Please call Ann Stallings for details and to ask questions.

PARENTING FOR LIFE

A video series developed by Rev. Penny Hill and facilitated by Kathy Fitzsimmons will begin Wednesday, September 14, 6:30 - 7:30 and continue for 12 weeks. Against a theological and biblical background, parents (and grandparents) will explore their values, understand child development, distinguish between discipline and punishment and consider behavior management techniques based on mutual respect. Please come join us for a challenging ins:giring, enjoyable, and freeing experience as we are encouraged to view parenting/grandparenting as a calling. Please call Kathy Fitzsimmons at (work) 956-4070 or (home) 471-9880 if you are interested.

CHILDREN AND YOUTH MUSIC ACTMTIES -

It's almost time for our music activities for children and youth to begin. Our choral and bell groups are determined by school grade, not by age. If your child will be in kindergarten - first grade, they will get to be part of the CAROL CHOm.. This group, directed by Bobbi Wethington, will meet on Wednesdays, 6:15 - 7:00 p.m. If your child will be in the second - fifth grade, they will be ready for THE WESLEY SINGERS. Under the direction of Jan Irvine, this group meets on Wednesdays, 6:15 - 7:15 p.m. Those who will be in sixth - twelfth grade can sing with our Youth choir. Directed by Bob Irvine, they meet on Wednesdays, 6:15 - 7:15 p.m. All of these groups will begin Wednesday, September 7. Once again, we will have JOYBells for sixth-twelfth graders on Sundays just prior to DMYF beginning September 11. If you did not sign your children up at Music & Drama Ciunp, we will have registration tables outside the library on Sunday, August 28 and September 4.

Commun ic a tio ns Workshop

Sa tu.rday, November 12 12:30-6:30 pm

The purpose of the workshop is to give participants an experience in communicating with others. Sometimes our communications with others fail and misunderstandings may arise because we are

unable to articulate what we mean. Our wmmunications as church leaders, parents, teachers, youth, children, and siblings in the household of God are vital to the life of our congregation and

our families.

The goal of the workshop is to give important tools to enhance our communications with each other in all of our capacities.

Participants should leave the afternoon with new skills for speaking, writing and listening.

Ea.ch participant, ages 8-11, 12-16, and adult, will choose two workshops of one and one-half hours each which will be led by

professionals who work in Durham area private counseling offices, The Dispute Settlement Center, the North Carolina

Conference, and the Methodist Home for Children.

Childcare will be proviced for children birth to seven. Transportation will be available.

NEW WORSHIP EDUCATION CLASS

On Sunday, September 11, we will embark on an exciting new program for first grade children. Except on Communion Sundays, they will leave worship following the Children's Response and begin studying all aspects of our worship service, the sanctuary, the Christian symbols and seasons, Communion, and Baptism. We will not learn about worship, but we will learn to worship.

This will be a learning experience for our entire congregation as the children share their knowledge through Insight articles and on bulletin boards throughout the church.

LIBRARY' NEWS

The weekend of July 23 - 26 Judy Walling attended the 27th annual conference of the Church and Synagogue Library Association which was held this year in Raleigh.

The focus of the conference was 'Libraries becoming the Lifeline for the Family'. There were many workshops and exhibits which covered all aspects of library work from selection and management of materials to the use of computers in the library. A tour of five local libraries added a valuable perspective to appreciation of what we at Duke Memorial have in our library.

Gifts have been made to the library from: *Spence-Kale Bible Class in memory of William (Buster) Poythress, Neibuhr and his age - by Charles C. Brown. *Harold Ludwigsen, in memory of his wife, Edna. *Laura Brock *United Methodist Women: ten books selected from the Global Ministries reading program (These are located on the UMW shelf in the library). - Judy Walling, Librarian

SUNDAY LUNCH - SEPTEMBER 11 AT DUKE MEMORIAL

It hardly seems possible that school is just around the comer and that Labor Day can only be a couple of weeks away. Can fall weather be far off?

To welcome all back to fall activities, the Administrative Board invites members, family, visitors, and friends to Sunday lunch, September 11. Please mark your calendars now. We don't want to get lost in your early fall plans.

You will need reservations. The cost will be reasonable and the fellowship, not to be missed. More in the next issue of Insights. Please make your plans now to enjoy Sunday lunch at Duke Memorial on September 11.

MUSIC AND DRAMA CAMP

We had a wonderful week of Music and Drama Camp, August 1-5. Thirty-one 2nd-6th graders presented "FolkPsalms' on Friday evening in our Sanctuary. They also presented it earlier that day at the Duke Street Senior Center, and St. John's Chapel (MRH). In addition to thanking the wonderful group of children who worked so hard all week, we'd also like to thank these folk, without whose help the camp just couldn't have been done: Warren Johnson, Judy Walling, Steve Long, Erin Carr, Jan Irvine, Any Johnson, Bob Irvine, Susan Grubbs, Mary Whanger, Reid Burton, Ginny Clark, Karen and Tom .Carr, Eric McFall, Sarah McCracken, Laney Funderburk, Jean Weynand, Tom Coble, Tim Turkington, Howard Fleming, and )erumer Nifong.
