She stood in the middle of the aisle with the two stands of chips and lollies that surroundedher. The faint and constant flickering of the light reflected on the plastic linoleum floors. Ariannesmiled remembering that day.Sparrows face had the most sour look on it as she put the half-pink half blue worm in hermouth. She giggled in a way children had when they were just happyor just children. Arianneput some in her mouth while the bus grumbled furiously. The other children were chatteringaway happily. The weekend was there along with the four week long holiday, the kids madeplans and were excited for fun-in-the-sun excitement that would be there for them, the sleepingin and not doing homework. The bus driver, Mr. Cleary was even cheerful. The memory of thesmell of summer, sweat and sugar seemed close, almost touchable. Arianne frowned to herself.

Sparrow jumped into the pool gleefully, her face imitating that of a puffer-fish while she heldher breath, the sour wormswere now in a bowl in a table where Ariannes mother Mrs . Morgan sat, watching over the twogirls who splashed and swam around harmoniously. They were happy children. As innocent as anew born chick, as harmless as a newborn kid. The sun was setting and Arianne was already

telling Sparrow about her summer plans for them both. Arianne thought shed seen her motherfrown but when she looked, her mother was grinning at her and Sparrow, telling the two girlsto get dressed and ready or supper. Tacos for dinner it was. Arianne smiled. Her mother madethe best Taco sauce, it sucked that she wasnt taught the recipe. She stared at the big steeltrolley with the two packets of taco mix and laughed remembering how sick she and Sparrowfelt after eating too much.

Sparrow whispered to Arianne in the middle of the night, as all the lights were shut andAriannes mother had gone to bed. She had the Blair Witch Project, had snuck it out of home sothat they could finally see it. Arianne remembered quietly walking down the stairs, both girlstip-toeing while they giggled quietly to themselves. They made their way into the family room, the smell of cardboard boxes and masking tape mixed in the smell of Ariannes house whichalways smelt like daisies and stew.

The two girls sat and watched, their bodies vibrating from their quiet laughter as theintroduction titles began to reveal themselves. They were having the best night, a night Ariannethought would be happening every time it could throughout the summer break. Both girls werehuddles in a thick blanket with a bowl of sour worms and strawberry fizz soda. It was Sparrowsfavorite. The girls had barely slept that night, they both had strong stomachs when it came toscary movies but they remained in Ariannes room, talking about the holidays. Everything wascoming into place. Had they but known what nightmare would wake them the very next day.

It was Ariannes step father, with his brown-grayed hair and friendly brown eyesNick, who

came with two big trucks. Sparrow glanced at the name of the truck as Arianne cried. Themorning had blown up both the girls future plans. Family Movers, the trucks was called. When

Arianne hugged Sparrow and finally let go and said goodbye, it was too much of a shock thatArianne thought she was having a nightmarea terrible, terrible nightmare. Arianne wasmoving. Nick got a promotion. The job was in Devon, it was far away from Brookfield, fromSparrow and their other friends. Far from her hometown. Her mother tried to calm her downwhile the young Arianne thrashed ridiculously,

both her parents hadnt known how to calm her down. They gave up and stared at Arianne andfor a mere moment, Arianne felt powerful. She thought she could make them change theirminds about changing.

By the end of the day, Arianne sat on the new, grey leather seats. Part of the promotion was anew car. It smelled like glue and leather. Arianne had red rims around her eyes as she clutchedthe bag of sour worms that Sparrows mother, Mrs Tate, brought. Sparrow had told her motherto tell Arianne that she couldnt bear to see her best friend leave, but that they would see eachother every holiday, would talk to each other every possible time. Arianne really wouldnt haveminded moving. But Brookfield was everything to her, her homewhere she grew up, learnedto walk and talk and find her friends. She didnt even say goodbye properly.

Two weeks ahead and Arianne still couldnt help but feel homesick, she didnt have time toenjoy the summer break and even the new housebig as it was, and like the castle shedalways dreamt of living indidnt feel right to her. She felt more alone than ever. Bother hermother and stepfather tried to make her happy, they took her to the park frequently and evenbought her new toys every chance they could go out to the Centre. Arianne and Sparrow had

talked, but Sparrow sounded content. She didnt reflect the same sadness that Arianne had.

Arianne cried to herself night after night until one day she couldnt handle the tears. She feltever so alone and the memories of her life in Brookfield haunted her. Every time she looked inthe mirror, she saw a strange version of Arianne. Where in her memories, she always smiledand laughed, the person in the mirror was someone else.

One day, a girl with soft strawberry blonde curls came to her new house. She introduced herselfas Blair, she was 6 too and she went to Devon Prep School. The school Arianne would beattending in two weeks. Arianne talked to Blair, she spoke to Blair about how much she hadhated Devon, about how much she missed Brookfield. Every day, Blair would go to Arianneshouse. Arianne grew excited, knowing Blair would come every day. Without noticing it, shethought less and less about Sparrow, though she talked to Blair about Sparrow every day. Blairwas nice to her, and they had plenty in common. They had become friends.

Going to a new school was all different and new for Arianne, she went to Brookfield since shebegan school and she knew no one and wasnt familiar with anything. On her first day, she feltthe same feeling of wanting to go home, though when she saw Blair and had been introducedto Blairs friends, she was happiereven if she was homesick, the previous summer was just afaint memory.

Devon was growing onto Arianne, and Arianne was growing into her new life. Within time sherealized she could finally be happy. Long weekends would come and either her or Sparrow

would visit each other. When Arianne thought of it, she was lucky. She was happy, and thoughevery time and again she would miss school. It wasnt so hard anymore, no matter how muchshe longed for Brookfield.

Ari, got the worms yet? A dark haired girl with a bob-cut said, rounding around the corner. The light above Arianne seemed to have stopped flicking. I got the red fizz. She said, smiling.

She got the fizz, I put the taco stuff in the trolley, now Ari, what about the worms? followed agirl with long, strawberry blonde hair. Im starving! She laughed.

Arianne reached to grab five bags of the sour worms. Blair, youre always hungry! Shelaughed throwing them in the trolley. Sparrow, I may be growing into the orange fizz

The three girls walked off, and the memory of summer and sour worms was left alone in theback of Ariannes mind. Lets get summer started.
