Our constant sport bike quest for more power and less weight now runs parallel with anongoing program to enhance control and safety.
DTC is a highly intelligent system that acts as a ‘filter’ between the rider’s right hand and therear tyre. In milliseconds, DTC is able detect and subsequently control wheel-spin, considerablyreducing the risk of incident.
However, DTC is intended as a ‘rider aid’ and does not remove the risk of incident.

6DTC CONTINUOUS DEVELOPMENT
Since its early 2008 introduction on the 1098 R, when the systemcould only be used on the track, Ducati Traction Control (DTC) hasy , ( )
undergone continuous development to make it suitable for the road.
This has been achieved on the 2009 1098 R Bayliss,1198 S and the Streetfighter S, by controlling wheel-spin g , y g pwith a combination of ignition retardation and a pattern of fuel injection cuts.
The 2008 system cut the ignition spark and therefore,y g p ,released unburnt fuel into the exhaust system which wouldhave compromised the efficiency of a catalyser if fitted.
For this reason the 2008 system could only be used y ywith non-catalysed race mufflers which restricted the system to track use only.
From 2009 this is no longer the case.

7DTC SENSITIVITY LEVELS
Accessible from the left-hand switchgear and displayed on the digital instrumentation, the system offers a choice of eight profiles or sensitivity levels. Each one has been
programmed with a wheel-spin tolerance matched toi idi l l f kill d d f i hprogressive riding levels of skill graded from one to eight.
While level eight administers a confidence-building, high level of interaction from the system
b i i lby activating at a lower threshold of wheel-spin,
level one offers a much higher tolerance and so
h l i imuch less intervention for highly competent
riders.
Wh h l l iWhen the level is selected and DTC
activated, both aredisplayed on the

instrumentation.
8DTC WHEEL SPEEDS
When the profile that best suits the combination of road or track conditions and riding stylehas been selected and the DTC system activated front and rear wheel sensors compare

has been selected and the DTC system activated, front and rear wheel sensors comparespeed differential to sense the amount of wheel-spin.
If the system recognises wheel-spin above aDTC ECU wheel spin above a
certain threshold, the DTC ECU administers
two types of interaction in varying amountsin varying amounts, calculated with values
supplied from multiple channels of data.

9DTC STAGE 1 INTERACTION
The first ‘soft’ stage of system interaction is executed by high speed software that instantly makes electronicadjustment to the ignition timing by administering varying amounts of ignition retardation to reduce the engine’s

torque output.
During this initial stage of DTC interaction, up to 3 warning lights (normally used to
i if li i *) ill iretardation signify over-rev limiter*) illuminate to signify the amount of DTC
applied.
*Th li i i*The over-rev limiter warning lights will always take
precedence over the DTC warning lights.

10DTC STAGE 2 INTERACTION
CIf the DTC software detects that the first ‘soft’ stage of system interaction is inadequate to control the wheel-spin, it continues to administer ignition retardation and, in addition, instructs the engine ECU to initiate a pattern of

11DTC DATA CHANNELS
With so many possible wheel-spin scenarios, DTC calculates instant data sent from multiple sources before deciding how best to interact with the power delivery. From
slow mid-corner acceleration with considerable vehicle inclination to high speed corner exitswhile almost upright, DTC instantly processes a mass of data input to react according to themotorcycle’s exact ‘dynamic situation’.

13DTC INNOVATIVE THINKING
13
Th i l i ti b t h l d hThere is a general misconception about wheel speeds whencornering on different rolling-diameters of tyre section.
This has no effect on DTC when comparing wheel speeds. The most important data is the differential in
f t d h l d d thi d t ifront and rear wheel speeds and this data is ‘re-sampled’ every 10 milliseconds to establish the system base-line.
Th l i ti thi ki b hi d DTC iThe real innovative thinking behind DTC ishow the range of sensitivity levels decide
exactly how to react to excessive wheel-spin by understanding the
bik ’ ‘d i it ti ’bike’s ‘dynamic situation’.
This ‘system intelligence' is achieved by processing a mass f d t i tt f j tof data in a matter of just
milliseconds, and it exists thanks to the thousands of
laps and hours spent testing, i d i

programming and earning race victories.
14DTC DATA ACQUISITIONRecording the amount of DTC interventionRecording the amount of DTC intervention
For 2009, an additional channel of information has been added to the Ducati Data Analysissystem, dedicated to recording the DTC index (a value that quantifies the amount oftraction control used during a data recording session) DDA is supplied as standardtraction control used during a data recording session). DDA is supplied as standardequipment on the, 1098 R Bayliss, 1198 S and Streetfighter S.
Once downloaded a graphic trace can be viewed to reveal just howcan be viewed to reveal just howmuch DTC interaction has been used to reduce wheel-spin.
When viewed alongside channelsWhen viewed alongside channels of data recording throttle opening, vehicle speed, engine rpm anddistance travelled or laps and lap times the system provides atimes, the system provides a valuable and fascinating analysis of the performance of both bike andrider when using DTC.

20DTC Q&A – SAFETYIs it impossible to lose rear wheel traction with DTC activated? Is it impossible to lose rear wheel traction with DTC activated?
No! Although one of the clear benefits of DTC is increased safety, the system should beregarded first and foremost as a ‘rider aid’ that improves performance and great care shouldalways be taken not to exceed obvious limitsalways be taken not to exceed obvious limits.
Poor motorcycle preparation, incorrect set-up, tyre condition, poor road or track surface orsimply ‘excessive cornering speed’ can all potentially contribute to uncontrollable loss of rearwheel traction even with DTC activatedwheel traction - even with DTC activated.

DUCATI TRACTION CONTROL
22DTC Q&A – CHANGING DTC LEVEL IN MOTIONIs it possible to change DTC level while riding? Is it possible to change DTC level while riding?
NO. Both the initial activation of the system and the selection or change of DTC level can onlybe done when the motorcycle is stationary. While there are obvious benefits in being able to
change DTC level while riding there are also a number of safety considerationschange DTC level while riding, there are also a number of safety considerations that have been factored into the design.
Firstly, and most obviously, ‘due care and attention’to other road or track users would be seriously y
compromised if the rider was navigating the set-up menus and selecting a DTC level while riding.
Secondly, adjusting the DTC level in the wrong direction during a road or track sessiondirection during a road or track session
because the rider’s attention is reduced, risks the DTC system being less
sensitive than expected.
For these reasons, it is important that the rider leaves the road or track and
parks the motorcycle before entering the system set-up and calmly
DUCATI TRACTION CONTROL
deciding which level best suits their riding style and/or environment.
23DTC Q&A – CHANGING ORIGINAL GEARINGDoes changing the original final drive gearing effect DTC?Does changing the original final drive gearing effect DTC?
NO. There is no part of the DTC system effected by the final drive gearing.
DUCATI TRACTION CONTROL
24DTC Q&A – STREET TYRESIs it ok to change from the original equipment tyres? Is it ok to change from the original equipment tyres?
NO. The 8 levels of sensitivity offered by the DTC system operate in a range dictated by the diameter, profile and rolling-circumference of the the original
equipment tyres Changing the type of tyre for streetequipment tyres. Changing the type of tyre for street use could seriously effect the performance of
DTC and so must be avoided and discouraged.
.
DUCATI TRACTION CONTROL
25DTC Q&A – TRACK TYRESIs it ok to change from the original equipment tyres for the track? Is it ok to change from the original equipment tyres for the track?
YES BUT... Consider that if you change tyre type, it is highly likely that only DTC levels 1-3(intended for highly competent track riders) will function within the software's pre-set margins.
The remaining levels are likely to be outside of the calculation tolerances.
DUCATI TRACTION CONTROL
26DTC Q&A – TRACK BODYWORKWhen changing bodywork can the DTC ECU be repositioned anywhere? When changing bodywork can the DTC ECU be repositioned anywhere?
NO. If after-market bodywork is fitted, it is vitally important that the DTC ECU, located inthe tail fairing, is positioned (and angled) exactly as it is in the original bodywork.
Failure to do so, will seriously effect the performance of the DTC system.
DUCATI TRACTION CONTROL
27DTC Q&A – SOFTWARE DIFFERENCESAre all 8 DTC levels the same for the 1098 R Bayliss and 1198 S?Are all 8 DTC levels the same for the 1098 R Bayliss and 1198 S?
YES. For 2009, all three models share the same software and intervention profile programming because they have similar power outputs transmissions and chassissimilar power outputs, transmissions and chassis configurations.
DUCATI TRACTION CONTROL
28DTC Q&A – WHEELIESIs it still possible to ‘wheelie’ with DTC activated? Is it still possible to wheelie with DTC activated?
YES. As DTC’s intelligent ECU reads all data channels to understand the motorcycle’s exact‘dynamic situation’, electronic considerations are made to distinguish front and rear wheelare made to distinguish front and rear wheelspeed differential during ‘wheelies’ and so avoid system intervention.
DUCATI TRACTION CONTROL
29DTC Q&A – BURNOUTSIs it still possible to do a ‘burnout’ with DTC activated? Is it still possible to do a burnout with DTC activated?
YES. DTC does not activate at (front wheel) speeds less than 30km/h (19mph) for the 1098 R and 20km/h (12mph) for the 1198 S, so burnouts performed below these speeds are permitted by the systembelow these speeds are permitted by the system.

30DTC Q&A – WORKSHOP TESTINGIs it possible to test the DTC system in the workshop? Is it possible to test the DTC system in the workshop?
Yes. Please refer to your local area Service Manager for full details and required equipment.
